This is my actual favorite store in Glasgow. I am from New Mexico, and my home state is famous for chile (not chilli, as you spell it here.) At Lupe Pinto's, I can buy dried New Mexican red chiles AND canned green chiles. This is the best thing ever. Also, they make their own tortilla chips, which are great, and have a nice selection of pinto and black beans (canned and dry) for my dining enjoyment. Beyond Mexican food, I was happy to find Frank's Red Hot sauce, dill pickles, and Hidden Valley Ranch dressing packets. Every time I go in, I just wander around for a few minutes, because it reminds me of all the (food) things I miss about home! read more

I think I'm in love... With a deli! Lupe's is amazing, I can't believe it took me so long to visit. I've been twice in the last month or so and really find it impossible to leave. There's so much lovely produce, it's hard to know where to start with not only Mexican ingredients but also Spanish, Caribbean and some Asian. The flour tortillas are perfect, the chips are lovely, as are the cheeses, chorizo(so I've been told by some meat eaters around me) in fact, everything in the cold counter looked great, fresh and authentic. I'd definitely advise trying a bit of the mature manchego. They have a wall of sauces, spices and seasonings. My mum and I took a lucky dip of barbecue sauces and took home one Texas style and one more Caribbean. Both are delicious, but very different. They also have a selection of oils and vinegars at pretty reasonable prices. Staff are welcoming and friendly and always on hand to give you advice or let you aimlessly stand in awe at all the wonderful produce. And even handed out some recipes when I mentioned I was going home to make chilli They also hold events, the Facebook page seems to be a good spot to keep up to date with these things, I'd definitely love to give one of these a go. Taste test on egg. (The bbq ain't from here I just don't have one ATM) Lazy day test for bbq, sriracha, hanenero sauce and kan kun (new sauce. Bbq wasn't spicy of course. Sriracha is lush, mild/moderate heat picante tomato, hanenero sauce is is same spice level slightly more vinegar flavour. The last one, kan kun is Defo more spicy but not TOO much. Strong pepper flavour not as much tomato. I'd recommend them all in various combination. Yum. read more

I should have reviewed here before, as it's one of my favourite places in the world. Yes, THE WORLD, not just Glasgow. It makes me want to buy a sombrero, throw it down, shout "SI!" a lot and dance round it. I doubt there's the room inside to do that, as it's stacked from floor to ceiling with delicious things. Hot things. Sweet things. Sour things. Crunchy things. Peppery things. Spicy things. Boozy things. ALL the things! The things are good. I go on a regular basis to top up my Sriracha habit. I would mainline the stuff if I could *googles if you can or not* Go for a look, talk to the folk behind the counter if you get lost, they'll help you no end, and try something a little off the beaten t rack for your dinner. I'm the American who cries in Lupe Pintos at the sight of a 3 Musketeers Bar. Highly recommend to any North Americans who are feeling a bit homesick, however, I will warn you that if you've never paid $6 for a small box of Biscquick, then now's your chance. They now have Aunt Jemima syrup, I'm happy to report, and if you're feeling like having a bit of cornbread, they've got the instant mixes that you grew up with. Now for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about (i.e. not from N. America), I will point out that there's a lot in there in the way of spicey. In fact, there is a WHOLE SECTION dedicated to spicey barbeque sauces and hot sauces. What's not to love? The only problem you'll have is deciding which one to choose. It's definitely worth a look, and, if you're having a hard time finding that obscure spice for that curry you're making, chances are Lupe's will have it. read more

While this is obviously, in part, due to its extensive range of goodies from across the world, primarily America (with a fantastic selection of 'candy'), the Carribbean and South America, it also stems from the interaction between owners and clientele. For instance, customers are encouraged to submit their own recipes using Lupe Pinto stock for future recipe books, while the website encourages owners of the fashionable Lupe Pinto's eco-friendly bag to take photos of them with it outside their favourite delis across the world. It's this community feel that is rapidly leading to Lupe Pinto's becoming an institution in the area. The products generally edge towards the more expensive side of things, extra you may grudge paying for a bottle of Lone Star and a Butterfinger. This place is where to visit if you require mad chilli products while in Glasgow. Try are labeled as a Mexican style deli, and they do not disappoint. Fabulous chilli selection and every chilli sauce you could ever imagine. They go from some nice mild chillies right up to the ring burning naga chillies (not for the feint hearted) also a great charcuterie selection, tinned goods and various American goodies. Go in with an open mind and deep pockets. Enjoy but don't go too mad. The hot stuff isn't for everyone. read more

Excellent speciality deli dealing imported grub mostly from the Americas. Ever wanted to see a Canadian break down in tears at the sight of an A&W Root Beer (it tastes like toothpaste if you ask me)? If the answer is yes then you best get your ass and your Canadian friend along to this joint and wait for the water works...you can always borrow mine if you don't have one of your own. With a tremendous selection of produce, all of which will have our cross Atlantic friends behaving much like us Scottish folk when we see Irn Bru any where else on the planet, this is a great place to pick up something that little bit different. This place will always hold a special place in my heart. Shortly, after I moved to Glasgow I became homesick for some American products not sold in normal grocery stores in Scotland. I walked in to this place and nearly passed out at the sight of all the things I missed the most. Peanut butter, root beer, chocolate chips, Mexican products, random American candies, candy corn (around Halloween), etc. All the favorites from home were in this wee shop on Great Western Road and I was a happy girl once again. What's even more amazing is that they have an amazing selection of Spanish, and even Asian imports, a deli counter, paella pans and tapas dishes, foreign beers and sodas; something for everyone. Support local shops as much as you can and shop at Lupe Pintos, Yelpers. It's worth every pence paid for their products and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. read more

If you are craving authentic Mexican or American food there is no better (or even other) place in Glasgow where you can get great ingredients to make classic dishes. You can get things you need for an American Thanksgiving, or fresh corn tortillas or flour tortillas for enchiladas or fajitas. If cooking isn't your thing just pick up their fantastic corn tortillas and a fire roasted salsa and mix up a margarita. The prices are a bit high on some imports, but I promise you (besides Costco) you can't find most of these things anywhere else in Glasgow for a better price. read more

CHILLIS I'm a regular at Lupe's...it's great! I love the variety of different foods from all over the world. Him Indoors is a chilli fanatic-so he's very well acquainted with the wee stand in the middle of the shop (and has consumed the ghost chilli on occasion...idiot!! ...!) And recently he's added some Chipotle into some of his standard recipes-deeeelish! The only reason this is not a whopper of a 5 s is because it's quite expensive...I understand having to import stuff etc but I've seen/bought some identical items elsewhere, cheaper! read more

I love love Lupe's - they sell fresh chorizo which is the bomb, when I do my west end pilgrimage/walk of same (because I spend so much) it is on my list every time. I pop in to top up on smoked paprika as they have some many cool tins of it and I buy lots of the fresh chorizo's to keep us going for a while. They have quite a large assortment of Mexican and American imported food and the frozen slices of cheesecake and pecan pie are delicious. their boxes of panko are super expensive for the tiny size they are and you can get a massive bag in Wholefoods for the same price. They do some nice wines too - but I tend to just buy bits and bobs as well as my chorizo and paprika - its good for getting odd things like graham crackers if you are following an American recipe etc but of course because they are imported the price reflects that. The staff are knowledgeable and are really lovely, my one beef is you have to spend £10 to be able to make a card payment rather than the usual £5 but its not that hard to spend a tenner and its not hardship really as they have some lovely and unusual items read more

I love Lupe Pintos. It reminds me of California and Spain which is everything I love wrapped into a very yummy tortilla filled with chorizo, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, beans, fish crackers, manchego, root beer, etc. The selection of food is right on and the quality is great. I have now been an ex patriot for nearly 8 years and this place fills the gap. I love their wee wine tasting sessions and tapa's tasters. I have never attended their cooking classes but I am sure they are great as I have spoken with the owner and he knows what he's talking about. Decided to make a Chicken Mole for tea and the first thing on the ingredients were ancho chillies. Now I live in the cultural wastelands where butternut squash and aubergine are viewed with suspicion and left to wither forlornly on the shelves. I was not optimistic about finding chicken thighs at my local asda I didn't even bother looking for ancho chillies. I'd heard about Lupe Pintos from friends years ago who cooked lots of Mexican food but had never needed to visit until now. What a waste, how much more interesting could I have made mealtimes if I had just gone in for a wee look - ahh the missed opportunities. Straightaway I found ancho chillies and a stand full of all sorts of chillies that I'd previously never heard of - going to have to get experimental soon! Then I found the marshmallow fluff, milk dudds, hot sauce, tequila, chorizo and the tortilla chips. If I hadn't stupidly brought a small child along with me I could have spent hours in this tiny shop and probably considerably more money that my normal weekly food budget. The staff were friendly and gave me a recipe card for Lupe Pintos' Famous Chile Con Carne which I can't wait to try so I'm going to have to go back very soon. I think I may be the only Mexican-American in Scotland. Hence, I had to search far and wide for anything close to what I'm used to using when I cook. This store is decent. They do have a few things I would get back home in California. Usually at about a 500% increase in price. Of course they need to charge for shipping so I understand. But it's too pricey for me to be honest. I would shop there frequently if it wasn't so overpriced. I found everything in the UK to be pretty pricey so this shop isn't any different. Either way, when I've got a craving for a michelada (Clamato), jarritos, or am out of tajin, I can save up for a month (just taking the piss) and get my booty to this local shop. I ordered a lot of the stuff they have from a mail order company in England and it's a little cheaper. It's easier for me to just go home and pack my suitcase with this stuff for much less. Ps: I thought it was pretty funny when the guy saw me pick up the tajin and, with great confidence I might add, said it was to put on bananas. No honey. No it's not. Haha! read more

I see Chris's story of grown men reduced to tears over tastes of home, and raise that with tales of an ENTIRE fleet of pizza delivery guys crying because the chilli sauce in here was way too spicy for their custom made food. Yes, Lupe Pintos seems to have quite the effect on the Glaswegian population, not to mention our international friends. It's a deli with a twist, specialising in foods (including some of the junk variety) from across the globe. Experience the taste of America from Lupe, who will supply you with enough peanut butter and jelly to make you pop. I'm also a big fan of their root beers, actually, not to mention the whipped up delight that is their Marshmallow Fluff. I have been known to sport a marshmallow 'tache on occasion because my whole face has been stuck inhaling a jar of this magical stuff. But the winner of all local Lupe legends from my friends is the time our manager brought an enigmatic chilli sauce into the shop, with only "DA BOMB" marked on the front in acidic luminous ink. The sauce, might I add, was sold in bottles shaped like grenades (that should give you a clue), and has the effect of tear gas on the majority of our staff. (Disclaimer: this was for our own personal abuse and we would never have unleashed the pain on members of the public, especially not after we digested the stuff...) We lathered it on some food we were dispersing amongst ourselves and I watched as the crew unravelled in floods of tears straight after eating it. God knows what the hell was in it but it was meant to be one of those novelty sauces that brings you close to death, and it did that! It's the only time in my life I recall downing an entire 2 litre bottle of milk in one sitting. As my teammates cried beside me for a minute it was like we had just taste the fiery pits of hell. But this stuff was sent to try our senses and as it was one of those fun foods, it did the job as it was mega fun all the same. So aye, I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't know where Lupe's get some of their stock but you will find the most wild, tasty, crazy, wonderful and absurd foods in here that will inspire a dietry revolution! I stumbled upon this tiny gem while walking down Great Western and could not have been more excited to find it! They sell the best variety of Mexican food supplies I've found in Glasgow. From fresh made corn or flour tortillas, corn tortilla chips, salsas, hot sauces, jalapenos, burritos, and any spices you could imagine. They also sell some staple American food items that you cannot find most other places (A&W Rootbeer, Ranch dressing, Skippy Peanut Butter, Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chips, Clamato Juice, Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix, etc). Lupe Pintos has a lot of good points, and a few bad. The Good: It's chock-a-block full of unusual imported foodie goods that you literally won't find elsewhere in Glasgow. They stock some delish frozen burritoes that are a great addition to any freezer, anywhere, anyhow. I also rate the wide choice of chilli sauces and tequila highly. The Bad: Some of these goods lose their novelty value quickly. Am I that eager to buy expensive pancake mix imported from America when I have eggs, flour and milk in my cupboards? ... No. The Ugly: Pretty pricey. Also, the staff are a bit unfriendly... Not ugly though, that's both unfair and slanderous. Still, I'd ride into the distance with this shop anytime. Lupe's has been one of my favourite places for a long, long time. The shop is probably best known for its range of chilli sauces, ranging from the mild (Jalapeño-based) to the burnaliciously hot (Naga Jolokia aka ghost chilli). The shop stocks a good range of American, Asian, Caribbean, Mexican & Spanish ingredients. They make a number of their own products like Guacamole, Salsa & Tortillas. They sell Mexican Queso Fresco & Spanish Manchego cheese. There's a number of American, Carribean & Mexican sodas, along with a number of different beers. The shop sells a range of imported rums & tequillas. Most importantly, it may be the only place in Glasgow where you can buy litre bottles of Cruzcampo (a favour from the gods I'm sure). read more

This is a gem of a shop, if you like condiments like I do you will be in your element. So many sauces to choose from, I picked up a jalapeño hot sauce and some cholula hot sauce and some sherry vinegar I could easily have chosen another ten! As well as sauces you can pick up tortilla chips, paella pans and even a press if you want to make your own tortillas. They also stock Spanish wine. Lupe Pintos Deli is a serious hidden gem on Great Western Road. I stumbled across it around 6 months ago and have been an avid customer ever since! If, like me, you have a love for Tex-Mex food then this is the place to go! They also stock Caribbean food stuffs, Mediterranean delights and have a whole section dedicated to hot sauce! You just can't get the right hot sauce here in the UK! There is a welcoming charm about the place and the owner is always on hand to help you pick the right seasoning for your chicken or the perfect additional ingredient to your salad. It is also noteworthy that they are licenced and have some cracking American beers here such as Blue Moon and Australia's Coopers Pale Ale - both very nice indeed, and at less than 1.50 a bottle a bloody steal! If you hail from across the pond the A&W root beer on sale may be the perfect accompaniment to a nostalgic walk in the park. If you need something to go with your can of refried beans (which are Delicious by the way) then grab a tub of the homemade guacamole. It is soooo good! read more

Lupe Pinto's is a funky little shop that has an interesting smattering of foods from across the pond. As an American, I feel almost hono(u)r-bound to love this store, but they make it an easy task. I rely on Lupe Pinto's mostly for their big chorizo sausages, which are always fresh and taste great. Though I do most of my cooking from scratch and have no need for the mixes on offer, I must admit that it is nice to just stand there and have a good long look at pictures of my long-lost surrogate relatives, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. The stock is a bit piecemeal and I never go there with a "must-have" shopping list (other than chorizo), but it's always an interesting experience to pop in and see what's new. There's usually a lovely rotating supply of fresh prepared foods in the deli case, as well. An all-round lovely shop! read more

A wee niche deli selling mostly Mexican food items, and also some Lucha Libre masks - handy if the mood takes you I guess. We browsed for a while, eyes agog at the massive range of chilis, and condiments that I had only every heard of but never seen available anywhere else. I bought the two items that I'd gone in for - liquid smoke (vegan and gluten free no less!) and some tamarind paste, and managed to resist everything else until I prove to myself that I will actually make some stuff with those ingredients. It's too easy to gather condiments that then just gather dust. The liquid smoke is going onto a pizza tonight, and then I'm going to make a fancy sauce for chickpeas with it too. read more

My wife is originally from Scotland so we come and visit her family from Los Angeles USA for a couple months every couple years and within those couple months I crave authentic Mexican food. They have great selections in dried chilies and spices and even husk and Masa for tamales. I'm in love! Lol this is my favorite store in Glasgow! After last nights experince at Rumours i have decided that i want to recreate the highlight of my meal, the tom yum soup. My cupboards resembled old mother hubards so off i set to find some ingredients... Lupe Pintos (two words??) was a delight. Some of the larger delis i've been to in the past have seemed clinical and almost supermarket like, this was not the case with Lupe. It felt like an old fashioned corner shop, the exception being that it was crammed full of all things mexican. I felt like a kid in a sweety shop amongst the chilli pastes, tortillas and taquilla. The guy serving me was really helpful and knowledgeable about his stock, so dont be affraid to ask! Although it was a little pricey, I will be returning to find other exciting products that are not to be found in the local co-op or keystore. read more

I think at some desperate point I would cut off my arm to eat Jif crunchy peanut butter, which is why I don't mind spending 3 times the 'actual' price to get it at Lupe Pintos once in a while. They have a great selection of imported foods, but it has a pretty hefty price tag to match. Masa Harina (corn flour to make corn tortillas) is generally around $3 (£2) and it costs £6.80 at LP. The point is if you really need some foreign food you can't find in a regular store, this is a good place to look, and the customer service is very helpful! read more

I just popped in here for a quick gander and ended up adopting their recipe for chilli con carne. The guy helped me find all the ingredients and then i proceeded to make it and cause those i made it for to feel the heat for days to come - Delicious though. Great atmosphere in this little spicy treasure trove of a shop. the first time i went into the shop it was actually the Edinburgh one to buy some chorizo. The service was so good that i had to visit the Lupe Pintos of my home soil,and i certainly wasn't disappointed. The staff member was just as helpful and enthusiastic but perfectly willing to allow me to roam around on my own without hovering over me, even if I was blankly looking at all the alien(to me) tins and jars. Picked up some chipotle relish and couldn't believe how inexpensive(not cheap) it was. If you're looking for some better quality and more interesting accompaniments to your meal than you would find in large supermarkets(or some centre pieces of the meal come to think of it) that don't actually translate as much more expensive, then you have to visit here. Almost forgot about the dazzling choice in chilli sauces to be had, ranging from nice and tasty to oh my god my face, MY FACE! Would recommend the Marie Sharps Belizean sauce for heat and flavour, a genuine crowd pleaser! read more

As some of you may have been aware, I have been searching high and low in Glasgow to fill the Unicorn shape hole in my store cupboard, and the food shops on Great Western Road almost fit the bill! The little gem of the food shops on here is Lupe Pintos. If you like your food spicy, this is the place to head to. Hot sauce's of all heats and sizes, chilli jam, spice mixes and herbs galore. There was everything you need to make a great chilli or curry with plenty of ingerdients and even concentrated chip shop curry sauce for when walking to the chippy is just too much effort. You can buy Kool-Aid which intrigued me and was only 50p - it stains everything and I put half as much sugar in as was reccomended and it was still too sweet! Didnt buy any of the alcohol on offer but did spy a bottle of Modelo Especial behind the counter, which gave it the thumbs up from me! read more

I've been trying to purchase chilli run tickets for weeks now; , week 1- loyalty card and the purchasing on 3 items to collect 3 stamps to get on priority waiting list, week 2- advised that could only sell 4 tickets per email address on priority list and if more than 4 required tickets go on sale 31.07 to public and could buy as many as required if any left at this point. Week 3- (took a days off work to get in as a Monday and tickets sell fast). advised that tickets to public on sale but could still only buy 4. Basically begged and power hungerry staff member refused point blank. Basically this power hungry attitude of who can/cannot get tickets coupled with total lies given by staff (I was advised that I could purchase as many tickets as I needed once the tickets were on sale to the public and if I travelled in on the Monday) total fabrication and I have 3 witnesses who confirm the information provided. As a regular Lupe pintos customer and a keen chilli run attendee (5 yrs) this will be my last.really poor, no need to lie to the public and cherry pick who gets tickets. Outrageous !! I have travelled into Glasgow 22 miles one way x four times over last 3 weeks, took a days holiday and purchased 3 non essential items to be able to buy tickets. I believe the staff member at the weekend and took the days holiday to purchase my remaining tickets. read more
