Pizza crunch, curry fries, mars bar and salt and vinegar fries.

I wanted to try a chippery when in Glasgow so we stopped by here to get some pizza crunch, curry fries and a deep fried Mars bar. In the states we only eat this type of food at the carnivals, it's kind of cool they have this kind of junk food on the menu year round! I liked the deep fried pizza, it tasted like school pizza that is deep fried and crunchy. The curry on the curry fries was a little thick for me. The Mars bar was OK, a little chewy.

Like Jamie, I've only ever been to the takeaway, not the restaurant part of this establishment. Again, I agree, it's not brilliant. Pricey pricey, and low quality suppers - but, it is only one of the chip shops on Byres Road. I'd recommend walking another few hunred metres to hit somewhere like University Cafe, or somewhere along the same lines. Fine if you're in a hurry, otherwise, it's not really worth it.

A giant portion of fish & chips. The picture doesn't do it justice, as you can't really tell how big the box is, but trust me, it is huge!

Mario's is my to go to place when I'm craving fish & chips, and I'm not gonna lie, that is quite often. It is always delicious, crispy, freshly made and the portions are more than generous (see picture). I also tried the fried Mars bar there - really yummy! Since I live quite close, I pretty much always get take away and have I only stuck with it, this place would have gotten 5 stars from me. However, I went to sit in with a friend recently and I just wasn't impressed. The staff was really friendly and interior nice and clean, but we had to wait way too long for our food, considering we were the only customers there at the time, and when it came the food wasn't salty at all. Now I'm used to getting my fish from Mario's flavored to perfection, this was a disappointment - of course there was salt, pepper & vinegar on the table, but you expect your food to be already seasoned at least a little bit when you eat out, don't you? So, I'll keep coming to Mario's for my usual takeaway chippie fix, but most probably won't be back to sit in.

We also shared a giant endless pot of tea. This place is really a special place, the day's menu is full of charm, and the service is excellent. When I was there, the dining area was quiet with plenty of available seating, definitely not a cramped place! I hope to return sometime, it was a great experience, food and all. I liked it so much I picked up a couple of their shirts to keep the memory.

The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.

The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.
