Coming from the states I didn't understand the big deal with fish and chips, until I tried merchant chippie! It blew my mind with how flavorful the fish was, a huge difference from fish and chips in the states! The chips are perfect as well. I'm not sure how they get the perfect consistency but they do. I've also tried their deep fried haggis, onion rings, mashed peas, deep fried pizza, mars bar, and sausage. I have yet to find something I don't love!

Probably the crunchiness batter and yummiest fish I've ever had in a fish supper

If I'm ever in Merchant City, walking past the Merchant Chippie makes me crave a fish supper. It smells incredible! However, it's really wee so it always looks mobbed and I decide to give it a miss. Until last night! After a night out I suggested to some friends we go to Merchant Chippy. It was around 11pm so I assumed it wouldn't be filled by the usual queues. Luckily I was right and I finally got my chance to try it. They offer the choice of breaded or battered on their haddock and whiting, but they have loads of other seafood options too including calamari, scallops, scampi and salmon. All of their fish options are delivered fresh from Aberdeen or Anstruther too. They have the usual chippy fayre too (sausage, pies, black pudding etc) and a white pudding supper which my friend from Aberdeen tells me is huge in chippies up there. Three of our group opted for battered haddock suppers and the other got a calamari supper. It's all made to order (no sitting drying out under a heat lamp here) but the wait was only around five minutes. Even if it was longer it'd have been worth the wait. My chips were beautifully cooked, fluffy and a teency bit crisp on the outside. They weren't dry in anyway and when you ask for salt and vinegar they actually give you enough for you to taste it. The portion was super generous too for a supper. The fish was incredible! The batter was golden and sooo crunchy whilst the fish remained beautifully soft and flaky. The quality of the fish was really high too. Far better than any fish I've ever had at a chippy in Glasgow. I was also lucky enough to nab a calamari from my friend. The batter didn't fully coat the squid but that didn't matter because I was immediately jealous of her choice of supper. The calamari batter was even crunchier than mine and it was perfectly cooked. Not tough, not raw. Perfect! She actually said it was the best cooked calamari she's tried. I'm so glad I finally got the chance to go to Merchant Chippie and next time I'm craving chips I won't be walking past the queue; I'll be joining on at the end.

We've been to many fish n chips locations on our way through Scotland and they were the best we've had so far. Chips could be crisper.

Great, largely fried food for take away later in the day or at night. The burger was very good.

Friendly staff, fish cooked to order, chips were great. A good stop after a grocery run at the Aldi's just across the street.

The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

We avoided this place for the low reviews but I noticed it almost always had a stream of people coming in and out. We wanted a fast bite and it was perfect. The glass display upfront has pre-cooked fish. It was not greasy like some of the other reviews though the owner did grab it with his bare hands to put it into the container. He asked if we wanted vinegar and salt and he actually seasoned it perfectly right in front of us. It was SO satisfying on a cold day and after an unhappy meal. If you get the older gentleman have him season your fish, he does it PERFECTLY! The fish was still crunchy and crispy but had that distinct vinegar flavor and a perfect amount of salt. We came around 7:30 at night and it was perfect, it wasn't busy at all. The later the night gets the more wild this area becomes.

I usually get it to go, but this time I decided to sit and enjoy. Granted, the place is not fancy, but they seem genuinely happy to see you! I always have the same thing- Fish & Chips- sometimes with Mushy Peas. However, I have had the deep-fried Haggis on a stick, and I loved it! That's probably because I had it after a night of drinking! Always a solid spot for Fish & Chips for me.

Boy oh boy, do I love a fish finger sandwich. Not to toot…read moremy own horn, but I make a pretty mean fish finger sandwich. I've always been on the look out for them in restaurants, and then Carolyn E. mentioned this place. I was very excited to try it. Eventually we managed to squeeze it in. The entrance is right next to the entrance to the restaurant and I almost missed it. All it is, is a small room with a counter that looks into Gandolfi's kitchen, a small fridge thing to keep drinks cold and a small bench. That's it, oh there's a menu. I swallowed pretty hard when I saw £5 for a fish finger sandwich, but I wasn't going to let that get to me. So we ordered and the staff was really friendly and asked whether we wanted out fish breaded or battered. We went for breaded (great choice, but I will try the battered), and both had tartar sauce and lettuce. We didn't have to wait for very long until we were given a HUGE package in brown paper. What a revelation. Although semi difficult to eat because you get 5 (!!!) big bits of fish in a huge crunchy baguette bread, it was delicious. The tartare sauce was perfection, the lettuce was crisp and the fish was undeniably delicious. I could have only had the fish and would have been happy. It wasn't fishy, but perfectly cut and perfectly breaded, golden on the outside with just the right amount of crunch and taste. Wonderful. Next time I am going to spread the sauce slight better and place the fish differently but I loved it. I loved every bite and I was gutted when it was over. The portion is huge, the price is fair. Even though you get a lot of food, you know it's quality. And I mean, excellent quality. It's also big enough to fill you up but not too much or too greasy (no grease here!!) to make you regret your life decisions. So, my friends, if you like fish on bread, THIS is where you must go.

Luckily my sister is a fairly regular patron and took us along to rectify that situation. It was mid-afternoon on a Friday so they weren't exactly busy, which was to our advantage as we got very friendly and attentive service. Both of us opted for the smoked salmon starter, which was absolutely perfect, almost melting on the fork. I wasn't expecting that the bread that had arrived beforehand was meant for the salmon and had already eaten a slice of it before the salmon arrived; but fortunately there was enough bread left. The choice of mains was a bit of a no-brainer and without much deliberation we opted for the pan-fried sea bass - always a favourite. Again, the fish was just perfectly done, accompanied by some crispy potato slices and greens. Plain and simple, allowing the fish flavour to take precedence. The pre-theatre menu is fairly select but not too outrageously priced; if your taste is more adventurous the a la carte and daily specials menus offer a wider (and pricier) choice. It's possibly a bit expensive for what it is, but this is a prime Merchant City location and the quality of the food makes it worthwhile for a special occasion.

I have had better and I certainly have had worse. So its ok and will do. I do wish the chips were cooked more though. I grabbed some side items that I thought may be essentials but what did i know. Some malt vinegar, tartar sauce, a jar of "brown sauce" and some ketchup were in my to go bag. Lets start with brown sauce. I have never had it or heard of it. It reminds my of hints of Worchester sauce with a tang and more of the consistence of a ketchup. I still don't know what to think of it. I did like it when i diluted it with some malt vinegar though. At that point i liked it on my chips as much as ketchup. The Gold star ketchup does not taste like Heinz. Less sweet and salt more tomatoe paste flavor. It works though. I am not a live or die guy for Heinz. And the very last was my iron bru soda. When they said its a cross between orange and bubble gum they nailed it. Both the ladies behind the counter top were extremely nice. That alone would make me head back. Once again this may not be the best fish and chips in Glasgow but i have a feeling that they are consistently good and that works for me. Enjoy
