The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

You place your order at the counter and food is brought to your table. There is limited seating but we got one of the few tables available. Seating was tight as one of the workers had to squeeze behind one of my friend's chair to get out from behind the counter. My fish and chips meal was excellent and a large portion. You pay extra for condiments like ketchup but vinegar is included if that is your preference. Someone suggested we tried their deep-fried Mars bar but we couldn't even finish our fish and chips so had to pass. It looked delicious though.

It would still be good, but it would be incomplete. This establishment is in the heart of the Merchant City neighborhood of Glasgow. It is found at the corner of High St. and Ingram St. They offer some great options. Fish and Chips and other seafood delights are the staple offerings but there are also other local favorites like Haggis, Scotch Pie, Sausage and Black Pudding. Add to those some more adventurous things like Fried Pizza as well as BBQ Ribs and Burgers, and there is something for most everyone. There is even a Halloumi Burger for non-carnivores. On the more unusual heart-attacky side, for dessert there is a Fried Mars Bar. A Strawberry Tart dessert is offered for those who want a more normal life expectancy. We visited this place on a Sunday night around 8 PM. It was an easy walk from our hotel. They were still doing a brisk business even an hour before closing. The atmosphere is cozy with three or four inside tables and an approximately equal number of little outdoor patio tables for those who prefer to be outside. The format is walk-up-and-order. The staff are quite efficient and pleasant enough to deal with. The food comes out quickly. We tried the 1-pc. Fish and Chips Haddock Supper along with the 1-pc. Cod. There were enough chips that we could split them. It's fair to say that we thoroughly enjoyed these classics. The rest of the good news is that the price tag for these was £23 all in. At £11.50 per person, this is a very good value for a simple, filling, classic meal. We would try this place again if we make it to Glasgow.

We avoided this place for the low reviews but I noticed it almost always had a stream of people coming in and out. We wanted a fast bite and it was perfect. The glass display upfront has pre-cooked fish. It was not greasy like some of the other reviews though the owner did grab it with his bare hands to put it into the container. He asked if we wanted vinegar and salt and he actually seasoned it perfectly right in front of us. It was SO satisfying on a cold day and after an unhappy meal. If you get the older gentleman have him season your fish, he does it PERFECTLY! The fish was still crunchy and crispy but had that distinct vinegar flavor and a perfect amount of salt. We came around 7:30 at night and it was perfect, it wasn't busy at all. The later the night gets the more wild this area becomes.

I usually get it to go, but this time I decided to sit and enjoy. Granted, the place is not fancy, but they seem genuinely happy to see you! I always have the same thing- Fish & Chips- sometimes with Mushy Peas. However, I have had the deep-fried Haggis on a stick, and I loved it! That's probably because I had it after a night of drinking! Always a solid spot for Fish & Chips for me.

Boy oh boy, do I love a fish finger sandwich. Not to toot…read moremy own horn, but I make a pretty mean fish finger sandwich. I've always been on the look out for them in restaurants, and then Carolyn E. mentioned this place. I was very excited to try it. Eventually we managed to squeeze it in. The entrance is right next to the entrance to the restaurant and I almost missed it. All it is, is a small room with a counter that looks into Gandolfi's kitchen, a small fridge thing to keep drinks cold and a small bench. That's it, oh there's a menu. I swallowed pretty hard when I saw £5 for a fish finger sandwich, but I wasn't going to let that get to me. So we ordered and the staff was really friendly and asked whether we wanted out fish breaded or battered. We went for breaded (great choice, but I will try the battered), and both had tartar sauce and lettuce. We didn't have to wait for very long until we were given a HUGE package in brown paper. What a revelation. Although semi difficult to eat because you get 5 (!!!) big bits of fish in a huge crunchy baguette bread, it was delicious. The tartare sauce was perfection, the lettuce was crisp and the fish was undeniably delicious. I could have only had the fish and would have been happy. It wasn't fishy, but perfectly cut and perfectly breaded, golden on the outside with just the right amount of crunch and taste. Wonderful. Next time I am going to spread the sauce slight better and place the fish differently but I loved it. I loved every bite and I was gutted when it was over. The portion is huge, the price is fair. Even though you get a lot of food, you know it's quality. And I mean, excellent quality. It's also big enough to fill you up but not too much or too greasy (no grease here!!) to make you regret your life decisions. So, my friends, if you like fish on bread, THIS is where you must go.

Luckily my sister is a fairly regular patron and took us along to rectify that situation. It was mid-afternoon on a Friday so they weren't exactly busy, which was to our advantage as we got very friendly and attentive service. Both of us opted for the smoked salmon starter, which was absolutely perfect, almost melting on the fork. I wasn't expecting that the bread that had arrived beforehand was meant for the salmon and had already eaten a slice of it before the salmon arrived; but fortunately there was enough bread left. The choice of mains was a bit of a no-brainer and without much deliberation we opted for the pan-fried sea bass - always a favourite. Again, the fish was just perfectly done, accompanied by some crispy potato slices and greens. Plain and simple, allowing the fish flavour to take precedence. The pre-theatre menu is fairly select but not too outrageously priced; if your taste is more adventurous the a la carte and daily specials menus offer a wider (and pricier) choice. It's possibly a bit expensive for what it is, but this is a prime Merchant City location and the quality of the food makes it worthwhile for a special occasion.
