We'd gone for a walk one sunny spring evening and ended up here. To be honest, I really wanted a fish supper but preferred the idea of dining in rather than a takeaway, so we decided to give it a try. One downside of this restaurant is that it's in the basement of the building, meaning that on a lovely sunny night you don't get to enjoy the sunshine. The decor could definitely do with updating as it is very casual. I looked at the menu and decided to have the pre-theatre (available all night on a Thursday) which is £13.95 for 2 course. There is a good choice of dishes (about 5 options of mains and starters). I opted for chicken liver pâté followed by mushroom and asparagus risotto. Graeme had a pizza, so we decided to get a cheesy garlic bread to share with our starters so he didn't steal all my pâté. The a la carte menu has pasta, pizza as well as meat and fish dishes. In all honesty I would have preferred one of the meat/fish mains but the prices were just too expensive for me, most coming in at over £15 for a main. Comparing these prices with decent city centre restaurants, I wouldn't expect to pay more on the south side and that's why this place loses a star. The pâté was a good dollop, served with crackers and bread as well as some salad and red onion chutney. Delicious, and a great size for a starter. The garlic bread was heavenly and had a huge amount of cheese on it which was just perfect. I really enjoyed the risotto as well - I've had a lot of bad risottos while dining out, and this wasn't one of them. Perfectly cooked, generously topped with Parmesan and lots of tasty mushrooms. I would have liked more asparagus but the pieces I did get were delicious and it was perfectly cooked, with the right amount of bite. We didn't have dessert and decided to walk home. The bill came in close to £50 due to the expensive drinks, which was a little disappointing. A small glass of rose was £4.95 and Graeme had a beer, so that pushed things up a little. I'm glad to say that we'd definitely go back and recommend it - the pre-theatre is a very good deal and I was really impressed by the cooking. It's great to find a great little restaurant right on your doorstep ... even if it's been there all along! (Added note, there's carparking behind the row of shops if you're driving, it can often be hard to get a spot on Ayr Road in the evening).

I'm not…read moreentire sure that Newton Mearns needs another Italian restaurant so I can't say I was rushing to get here when it opened, but it is run by the same people who do La Fiorentina which led me to having high expectations of what this would be like. We arrived for lunch during the week and were seated in the conservatory. It's a nice bright area that gets quite noisy as soon as there's a few tables in there. They haven't changed the decor a whole load, just splashed around some chilis and garlic to give it an Italian vibe (I'm not joking) but it's pleasant enough. The lunch deal is 2 courses for £6.95, Monday - Friday 12pm - 6.15pm and on the weekend from 12 - 4pm. (On their website there are 4 different versions of the lunch menu which is a bit confusing, but it's because they rotate them weekly so there is always something different which I think is a good idea!). I went for the mozzarella sticks and then the main of beef Milanese which had a £1.50 supplement, and we got an extra portion of garlic bread to share. The food didn't take too long to arrive and the mozzarella sticks were a good size, nice and chunky. Sadly there was no spicy tomato dip that the menu mentioned, so I resorted to dunking my sticks into Graeme's meatball sauce. I would have asked for the sauce but there was no waiter to be seen from when our meals were dropped off as we were out in the conservatory, and the rest of the diners were in the main restaurant. Not really a huge bother, but at the time it did bug me a little. My main was another mixed bag - the portion was huge, and the pasta was absolutely delicious, some of the tastiest pasta I've had in ages. The beef was really grisly though, and hard to cut - especially as it was served in a bowl with the pasta underneath. Most of the beef was really nice but it was those grisly bits that really tainted the dish for me. Service was fine, and the bill came to £20-something which wasn't too bad seeing as we got a few extras and drinks between us. The other good thing was that it was a pretty quick meal which is handy if you're out for lunch on your lunch break. But would I rush back? No, probably not - I've had a few great meals at Piccolino e Vino at the Broom and would probably head there for lunch rather than here.

Food is great and the service has been decent on the times that I have dined in. My dad loves the margarita pizza, I like the Mia Casa pasta dish and my mum swings from the salad to something with chicken usually. It is our local Italian restaurant and I recommend it if you are in the Newton Mearns area. It is worth noting that the parking is round the back (shared with the other shops and it can be tight for a larger vehicle, such as a Panamera or XJ).

The food arrived within 20 minutes - impressive seeing as it's a 5 minute drive from our house and they'd told us 30 minutes at least. The food was piping hot and delicious. My pasta came with rocket which tasted awful, you know how sometimes it is really bitter? It was really easy to pick off though so no harm done. The sauce and ravioli were delicious, creamy and a really generous serve so I was able to save the leftovers for lunch the next day. I think the last time we ordered takeaway for delivery was some time in 2011, so we're not pros at this kind of thing. I'd rather go our for a meal. But this place had a great take away service so I suspect we'll be using them again in the future.

There's nothing particularly appealing about the shop front. Furthermore as they have no website I had no real idea what to expect food wise. So, I went in completely blind, not knowing anything. First impressions were excellent, very cosy, only 8 or 9 tables, nice Italian music in the background, the chatter of Italian in the kitchen and amongst the waiters. It all boded very well. We ordered some drinks and after a quick rummage through the menu (which all looked great, and very well priced) we were recited the specials of the day. In true Italian style we took the plunge and went for a mega feast of four courses. Nothing particularly challenging for a Wednesday night I must say. To begin, we had a duo of bruschettas - one, a classic tomato and the other with friarielli (or Italian wild broccoli). Afterwords we had a wonderful seafood caserecce pasta dish (primo) with fresh clams and squid. It tasted just like the real stuff I would get in Italy. After, yes there was more (or a secondo), a huge fitto misto (which we shared) which is basically battered and fried seafood. The batter was so light and crisp, and served with lemon its a simple and easy dish that is difficult to top. Finally for desert was a home-made amarena cherry and amaretto cheesecake. It was oh so rich and creamy. Exquisite!!! All this was washed down with some rather darn fine Soave white wine, and the best part was the final bill, incredibly good value for money considering the quantity and the amazing quality of the food we had. I could not recommend this place enough. A real proper Italian restaurant, which is going straight into my top Italian eateries list. I simply cannot wait to go back.

Beware there is a £10 corkage charge which is in small print however not something you expect when selecting wine in a restaurant. The manager made no apology for the long wait if fact said he didn't think it was a long wait. We will be unlikely to return.

The overall aesthetic is that of your friend's family's rustic, rural Italian home. It's very cozy and a bit careworn, but in a charming way. The food is fantastic - Italian classics done with love. The wine list is great and the vino comes served like my Sicilian grandpa used to drink it - in tumblers instead of wine glasses. Just adds to the atmosphere. They also have a snappy little pre-theater menu: two courses for 11.90, 5:00 - 6:30 pm Monday - Saturday. The only downside, if it can be considered so, is that the windows are so big that it's too bright in the summer. Once the days get a bit shorter, however, it's perfect for an intimate dinner.

It was topped with these caramelised shredded onions that had it not been for my low embarrasment / awkwardness threshold, I'd have asked the chef how to make at home. From the rest of my review you can probably tell what I'll say about the iced coconut and bitter chocolate dessert, and even though the restaurant is undoubtedly quite expensive at about £18 a main course, I'd still say it's definite value for money, and a lot cheaper if you go earlier for the pre-theatre. As well as the main restaurant there's also a new wine bar which offers a slightly less fancy menu, and does lunch and breakfast as well. Although it's nice to sit in (I've only had drinks but have little doubt the food will be excellent), I'm slightly worried they've over-extended themselves by opening up this area. It's in a huge, brand new extension, and has effecxtively tripled the size of the place. For a restaurant that was doing well as it was, I'm not really sure why this was needed, especially as it's location in a quiet suburban part of the city means you have to really be making a conscious effort to come here rather than simply be "passing trade". Anyway, it's one of the best places I've ever eaten anywhere never mind Glasgow, and is a couple of doors down from Cathcart Station. There's no excuse not to try it.

I have dined in here a few times: once in the main restaurant section and two or three times in the wine bar section which has a more basic (e.g. bog standard) menu. My first experience of Barbarossa in the main restaurant was fantastic, if a bit pricey. Admittedly, the I am not used to forking out quite so much for a nice meal out. But, it really was worth it! I had an amazing prawn starter (and trust me, I've eaten prawns in many a restaurant). The prawns were cooked just right - not rubbery at all - and in a lively subtle but tasty sauce which didn't over power them nor leave them bland. For a meal, I had steak with perfectly cooked vegetables on the side. Absolutely delicious. Meanwhile, my companion had a lamb chop with veg which I was lucky even to taste. Hence, why if I was going back I'd be very tempted to opt for the lamb. However, the other occasions I have eaten here have not been so great. The wine bar section offers a decent selection on the menu (though it is mostly pasta, risotto and the basic run-of-the-mill Italian stuff) for a much more reasonable price. This should make it ideal for a relaxed and decent budget lunch towards the end of the month or when you're saving up for that holiday. Instead, you end up paying around £8-10 for a dish of poorly cooked pasta (soggy, anyone?), in a rather bland sauce. This gives the strong impression that the ingredients are not the freshest or the highest in quality. Meanwhile, for the bistro type experience, you are paying around £14 for a bottle of wine. Hence, it's still a bit too pricey but in this section the food is definitely not worth it. Furthermore, the staff seem to make a very clear distinction between diners in the restaurant and bar sections. Having dined in both, I was shocked and rather annoyed by the customer service the staff executed in the bar and, indeed, the manner in which they did. So, to conclude, if you are after a pricey but amazing meal then the restaurant area in this venue is probably the best around locally. However, if you are looking to spend a little less and still receive a good quality of cooking then give the wine bar/bistro section a miss. Instead, a preferable less pricey and good quality alternative would be The Battlefield Rest about a ten minute walk away.

The pre-theatre is just £10.95 for two courses which is pretty reasonable. I tried a starter of crispy chicken (pollo fritto) and then the pasta of the day as the main. There was a bit of confusion about what the pasta of the day actually was, as the waitress told us the daily specials, and then we were corrected and told these weren't available on the pre-theatre. Food arrived quickly and I can't say the appearance of the chicken impressed me - it was a thick batter as you can see from the photo, and didn't really look all that appealing. It was served with a dipping sauce which it definitely needed as it was lacking flavour otherwise, and was a little tough. The main was better - it was a creamy tomato pasta with chicken and mushroom. Overall I liked the flavour and the portion was huge. Strangely there was bite sized pieces of chicken throughout, and then a couple of really big bits which needed chopping up. I skipped dessert as there was only two options on the pre-theatre and I didn't fancy either of them. I tried a little bit of the baked cheesecake and it was too heavy for my liking and needed more of a sauce/topping (it had a berry on it) so I was glad I hadn't ordered it. We were seated right by the door as well, and this was a little annoying when people were coming and going through the restaurant. At one point there was a group of 8 people standing right by our table in the doorway and letting the cold air in. Of course this isn't the restaurant's fault as it's a small space but they obviously had to leave them waiting while they got their table ready. Overall, I was a little disappointed with the meal here - perhaps the a la carte menu is better but I always like to judge somewhere by the quality of the pre theatre, and I have to say it was lacking on this visit.

From the outside it looks a little more formal than it actually is, staff were superb and several table had kids so made for a much more relaxed atmosphere than we were expecting We had a few starters to share, Calamari, stuffed Rice Balls and Dough Sticks - all three of these are really easy to do badly but all three were excellent. Calamari was lightly battered, golden and not at all chewy, Rice Balls were perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned, Dough Sticks were hand made and "rustic" and not at all stodgy. Main courses were all excellent too, it's a good all round place with really nice staff and reasonable prices so we'll definitely be back.
