Battlefield rest is a neat little Italian restaurant housed in a former tram station. The green and white striped building (Celtic fan?) was built in 1915 and makes for a rather dashing building set in the middle of a roundabout. It's just as engaging on the inside. The overall aesthetic is that of your friend's family's rustic, rural Italian home. It's very cozy and a bit careworn, but in a charming way. The food is fantastic - Italian classics done with love. The wine list is great and the vino comes served like my Sicilian grandpa used to drink it - in tumblers instead of wine glasses. Just adds to the atmosphere. They also have a snappy little pre-theater menu: two courses for 11.90, 5:00 - 6:30 pm Monday - Saturday. The only downside, if it can be considered so, is that the windows are so big that it's too bright in the summer. Once the days get a bit shorter, however, it's perfect for an intimate dinner. read more

The Battlefield Rest is something of a Glasgow institution. At the very centre of the South Side renaissance, the restaurant offers a welcome respite from the astronomical prices and often over rated fare offered in the west end. Situated in a converted tram station on a traffic island on Battlefield Road, The Battlefield Rest offers authentic Italian food, as well as a fine cup of coffee and cake in the afternoon. It's intimate interiors and warm exterior make the Battlefield Rest the perfect setting for a family occasion, with many graduations, birthdays and engagements toasted over the years. The family run restaurant has a great wee atmosphere and it's not rare to find familiar faces coming back for more time and time again. One of the great pleasures is the delicious smell of garlic and herbs that emanates from its kitchen. Waiting on a bus in the rain can be a miserable, lonely experience - however standing at the bus stop outside the 'Rest can take ones mind back to the motherland (and I'm not even Italian!). This place is definitely a Glasgow South Side institution and I reckon it's worth a visit for the building alone. It's located on a traffic island which might not sound all that appealing, but it's actually a really beautiful building which used to be a resting place for tram travellers (and was then converted into this fabulous restaurant). We were having dinner with Graeme's folks on a Friday night and the place was heaving. They were obviously totally booked out and it does have a bit of a cramped feeling - navigating your way around the restaurant can be a little bit of a challenge as the tables are quite close together. So just keep that in mind if you're looking for somewhere for a romantic dinner for two as I personally don't think it really suits that vibe! For a family dinner or catch up with friends, it's perfect. I've recently started a gluten-free, dairy-free diet and I was a little worried about what I could eat here. I should have actually asked for an allergens menu, but instead just went for the chicken montanara which sounded like it would be fine - chicken breast stuffed with goat's cheese, sundried tomatoes, red onion and spinach, wrapped in Parma ham with light onion & tarragon white wine sauce, with potatoes and vegetables on the side. The waiter did warn that this dish took a little longer to prepare but he was pretty vague saying "it'll take an extra 5-10 minutes for that dish" - not actually specifying what that 5-10 minutes was being added on to. We actually ended up waiting for what felt like forever for our dishes - I'd say at least 40 minutes. It wasn't like we were in a hurry but I was pretty hungry so was definitely starting to feel the hanger set in. Thankfully it went as soon as my dish arrived as it was just delicious - really rich, generous portion and lovely flavours. The side potatoes and veg were really nice too and overall, I was really happy. I thought for the price (£13.90) it was very generous with the portion size and enjoyed every bite - I'd definitely get this dish again. I didn't get any dessert as there didn't appear to be any dairy-free options, but Graeme enjoyed his chocolate ice cream. I really enjoyed our meal here (despite the wait) and would definitely come back as it's been too long between visits. Perhaps surprisingly for an area pretty far from the city centre, this part of town has some great places to eat. The Battlefield Rest has been here for 15 years and is among the most well known, and thus busiest, so at weekends you might need to book in advance. The restaurant has a very charming oddball feel to it, partly down to it's location in an old tram station at a busy junction, and partly down to the old fashioned yet very cosy decor that gives it a bit of rustic charm. The menu has a bit more than the normal pizza / pasta monotony you will find at similar places, with a good seafood selection and a traditional section with Milanese pork and other such Italian staples. I have to have a gripe here as my favourite dish has recently been taken off the menu. Chicken stuffed with haggis in asparagus sauce may not sound too Italian, but trust me once you've feasted upon it you won't care. It's beyond delicious, and has recently been replaced with a variant that uses gravy instead of asparagus sauce. If anyone from the Battlefield Rest reads this, I demand a return to the old version. There's always a nice buzz about the place and the staff are always cheerful in typical Italian fashion. It's been succesful for 15 years and people keep coming back, so I urge you to try it. On my first full day in my new Southside flat, jet lagged and partner gone to work, I was not exactly up to cooking lunch in the mid-afternoon and resigned myself to the idea of a sausage roll or something. In the course of exploring the area, though, I found the Battlefield Rest, and upon seeing they do a £5.50 dish-and-drink lunch deal from 12-4, couldn't resist going somewhere that I could sit down and be served. Seriously, it was an excellent decision; their lunch is probably the best with regards to cost for quality anywhere in the vicinity. The spicy penne with pork sausage and spinach was excellent, rich and quite a filling and generous serving. The location was charming and they did seem to be doing a decent amount of business even at 3:45 pm, so I'd agree that booking at peak times is probably best. While I didn't get anything else, I did browse the menu and their other prices looked quite reasonable as well. However, I'll have to leave this at four stars until I get a chance to try more of what it has to offer. read more

Top class!! Heading back this weekend, been many times now and never disappoints! The staff are all friendly, the owner? doesn't say much but he's always running about like a mad man! Try the steak, it's out of this world! I would book ahead by a week or so if going on weekend. Can be a bit crowded and difficult getting out of some of the tables if you need the loo but this is not a problem in my eyes. read more

Although It's been a few months since I've ate here, going once for their pre theatre this review had to be wrote to encourage everyone to go and try the seafood stew! There is a good range of options the pre theatre menu, and after having a nose at the menu again before writing this, it seems the menu changes which is quite a nice touch. When we went I had an Aranchini starter, they were crisp yet soft,melting as you eat them. There's often a fear with risotto balls that they are dry or tough. My parter had a calamari, which had a light batter filled with succulent squid. They were great sized starters and wonderfully fresh tasting. For our mains, my parter had the spicy chicken calzone with spinach and sun dried tomatoes. It was possibly the biggest calzone I've ever seen, with oozing cheese and plenty of fresh fillings. I had their seafood stew filled with mussels, squid, salmon, haddock and prawns, not sure if there was more. It was served in a big bowl with crusty bread and plenty of the rich tasty tomato sauce. Although The menu now says it is served with rice, not sure if this is something they change a lot. Personally I think the stew was so satisfying, I'm not sure you need a heavy carb with it. Each piece of seafood was perfectly cooked, which is often a rare occurrence in a stew type meal,with it only taking moments to overcook squid or mussels. I can't stress how good it was!!! I was shocked at the value of the pre-theatre, especially as it included so much seafood. The staff were welcoming and friendly even through I was running a little late for our reservation. It was mobbed, as it often is. I'm not sure I've ever seen it empty, but they made sure we had anything we could need. We never stayed for dessert as the meal was so filling, however you could see the range of puddings in a fridge and everything looked delicious! I can't wait to get back here! read more

This place is a wee south side treasure! My other half literally stays a stones throw from the famous Battlefield Rest, but we had only ever visited once before for lunch. Recently, after 4 years of "we should really go back to the Battlefield Rest", we finally got our act together and visited again! Much like All Bar One in the city centre, it doesn't matter what time you pass the Battlefield Rest, it's always full! I passed by around 5.30pm on my way to my boyfriends and it was completely empty but by the time we arrived at 6.30pm for our reservation about a quarter of the tables were already full! If you have a big party or want to guarantee your table, I'd really recommend booking in advance! The interior of the Rest is very quaint and very intimate (i.e. tables close together). Nicely lit with lots of lamps and candles, they atmosphere is a mixture of romantic and familial, like you're having dinner in someone else's house rather than a restaurant! The Rest offer a lot of different menus depending on the time of day. They have very reasonable lunch and pre-theatre deals that are worth having a look at. For our long awaited return we decided to treat ourselves, splashing out on the a la Carte menu! For starter we both had the Crepes Piemontese, a lovely little crepe filled with spinach, ricotta, peppers and sun-dried tomatoes with olive and tomato crostini on the side. It was gorgeous! Big enough to be filling, but small enough not to fill me up before my main. For my main I had the Pappardelle Ortica alla Verdura, or nettle leaf pasta with veggies to you and me! It was a generous portion of pasta with fresh asparagus, sun-dried tomato, mushrooms, olives, nettle leaves and parmesan tossed in garlic and oil. I could have eaten it twice! I was even mean enough to not offer my dining partner any to try, it was just so good! He had Chicken Montanara, which is chicken breast stuffed with goat's cheese, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and red onion, then wrapped in parma ham with a white wine sauce, and potatoes and veggies on the side. He enjoyed his, but thought the goat's cheese was just a little overpowering for his tastes. We (stupidly) passed up on desserts because we were too polite to admit we actually wanted some, and boy did we regret that because they sounded so good! Guess we'll just have to go back again, but we certainly won't be leaving it another 4 years! Our dinner, with soft drinks, came to around £40, so it wasn't a cheap meal, but it could have been if we opted for the pre-theatre menu. But to be honest, the service, atmosphere and food were all great so personally I think that was reasonable for the whole experience. read more

Battlefield Rest is something a little bit special, if you're bored of going into town and are looking for a change then look no further, this place ticks all the boxes. This brasserie style restaurant has delicious food at very reasonable prices and the staff are also very friendly. I would advise that you book, as it's always pretty full. I always find it strange as it's like Dr. Whos Tardis, it looks so small from outside but inside it feels huge I guess it's probably due to the fact that it has really high ceilings. They also have the most amazing honeycomb ice-cream so get that for dessert! read more

Absolutely the best Italian in Glasgow! Great menu with a few pleasant surprises, excellent fish dishes or simple traditional fayre, there's something to please every pallette. Fantastic! I have been a customer of The Rest for a few years now and it is always my first choice when planning a night out . I have tried many things on the menu and I haven't been disappointed yet the food is delicious. I have been to many Italian Restaurants in Glasgow and this is by far the best and very reasonably priced. I would recommend The Rest to anyone but I would say book in advance as the place is always very busy and fills up very quickly which is a good sign in itself. If you have a sweet tooth like me, try their Sticky Toffee Pudding, it's to die for! read more

Looking at the sea of five stars for this restaurant, I'm worried that my measly three is going to start a backlash! However, I suspect that the Battlefield may have been Resting on its laurels recently, coasting on its good reputation. I will state my case thus. The Baron and I arrived slightly after our chums who were already seated in the packed and rather cramped restaurant, and with drinks served. Great! We ordered two bottled beers, although we then had to ask for two glasses for the beers. Strike number 1. Two half pint glasses arrived. Strike number 2. It took a while to then get a waiter's attention so that we could order, which happened once the waiter had gone away again to retrieve his pad. In fact, every time we ordered something, the staff had to go and retrieve their errant notebooks first - surely that's what pockets are for? Strike number 3. Our starters were delivered and consumed without much incident - a rather nice caprese for me (the pine nuts were a nice touch), a tempting looking shared meat platter for two of our party, and garlic bread and mozarella for The Baron. Oh wait, I tell a lie - there WAS an incident. It's at this point that Gallus Waiter Who Thinks He's Much Funnier Than He Actually Is enters the story. The Baron's plate of garlic bread and mozzarella was presented with a rib-tickling cry of 'curry and custard!' The offer of ground pepper was oh-so-hilariously changed to 'Prozac?'. We affected the forced smiles and barely discernible nods of people who have just been told a really racist joke by an embarrassing boss, and waited until he'd gone away. Strikes 4 and 5. Starters were cleared away and then our main courses arrived, in a bit of a jumble it has to be said - my Pork Battlefield Rest arrived first, and then my vegetables last, out of our table of five. We ordered new bottles of beer, which also arrived with new pint glasses for everyone - hooray! But they were all half full of ice - what?! Given the average response times for the evening, it was easier to just tip the ice into our water glasses and manfully carry on, rather than ask for empty glasses - Strike 6. Strike 7 came while I was regaling my companions with an hilarious anecdote, when I sensed a smug presence looming at my elbow. It was of course, Gallus Waiter, who rather than saying something normal like 'sorry to interrupt, but is everything okay?' instead gestured for me to continue my story, and affected a glaikit 'I'm fascinated' expression for my benefit (which he'd apparently been wearing for a minute or so before I noticed him). The Battlefield Rest very nearly got four stars at that point: "**** off!" But of course, I restrained myself. And after all those antics and high-jinks, what about the food? Well, it was...nice. Not bad, but not amazing, just....nice. I felt that my pork should have been a bit more special for over £12, and while very strongly flavoured, seemed rather well cooked, not too tough to eat, but certainly not juicy or tender. The Baron thoroughly enjoyed his haggis cannelloni, but remarked that the presentation of the side salad left a bit to be desired, being essentially rocket flung at a bowl. In fact, the presentation of the Lamb and Venison stew and of the Pork Milanese also seemed to be of the 'fling at a bowl' school, though you couldn't fault the size of the portions. So, would I go back? Well, probably not of my own volition, but I would happily revisit with friends to see if they can prise more stars from me. Came here with my mum and her partner for a last minute meal last week and as I am vegan I was a bit worried about what to get but the waiter was really helpful and asked what I would like and he could sort it out, so I ended up getting some pasta in a spicy tomato and garlic sauce with a side salad. We shared the veggie antipasti plate to start and my mum had seafood carbonara which she said was a bit bland, and her partner had the fishcakes which he devoured. The staff were super friendly. We had a bottle of red house wine too which was lovely. Great staff and very accommodating. read more

Excellent unique building with a cosy and bustling feel inside, can be quite busy at the weekends so worth booking!! The seabass is fantastic, ive had it twice now, nice and garlicy! The staff are very pleasant and like to crack some jokes :) The menu isnt particularly cheap but the food is served in large portions and is definitely worth the money you pay for it! Went for a lunch twice in the one week, the first lunch was a catch up with my friend which I enjoyed. The second was a date I was on and I chose the turkey dinner which was most enjoyable, I started with the pate and oatcakes which were yummy , I had tiramisu on the first lunch I found it to be very creamy, but all in all very nice meals indeed, and the service was good, nothing to complain about, and I will be back at some point. read more

This is certainly the best Italian restaurant on the South side! One of the things that I love about this place is the menu - it is quite different from a lot of Italian restaurants. They have dishes such as Waldorf salad, Pork Milanese, and my favourite - Chicken stuffed with haggis and served with an aspargus cream sauce. I have had a similar dish elsewhere, but it is never as nice as in here! The coffees are top notch and the tullibardine is to die for! It is one of the few places I know which you have to book for Monday lunch! It is worth making the trip to if you want some authentic Italian cusine! read more

This is by far our favourite restaurant in Glasgow we have been eating here since Joe and Marco opened in '94 when we lived nearby and now living in Ayrshire it is our first choice for a meal when in the city. It is always busy which really says it all. Menu choice is superb with daily specials on the board all food is excellent and freshly prepared and for such quality prices are extremely reasonable. Service is always friendly and fun from long serving staff. Our son has grown up with this restaurant from being tiny & asleep in his carry seat to recently ordering his favourite pizza as his 12th birthday treat. When our guests visit Glasgow we point them in this direction. Highly recommended, warm, welcoming, family friendly with great food & wine and not surprisingly Award Winning. read more

Since it was a lovely evening we decided to head to the local italian and try out what it had to offer. I've heard great things about this place so was pretty excited as italian is my favourite cuisine. Sadly I have to report I was entirely underwhelmed by the food and the service. We had to wait a fair while before we were given a menu and order drinks so I was a little apprehensive about service from the offset. We eventually had a nice prosecco and ordered the pizza/pasta sharer, although the menu was varied throughout the day the options were far from spectacular. Although the flavours were spot on (chilli, spinach, chicken and tomatoes), both the pizza and pasta were far too oily for my liking and made it a bit of a struggle to eat. Apart from the food the waiter forgot to bring us our wine so we had no drink with our main course. We also asked for an ashtray which he neglected to bring until we decided just to have one regardless...20 minutes later. The only reason I gave a 3 instead of a 2 was the generous amaretto as we got the bill. read more
