I'm not a huge fan of northern French cuisine as it tends to have too much dairy in it for my taste; however Cote are very amenable to offering alternatives where possible so I didn't have much trouble finding something acceptable. Their lunch and early evening menu is very good value for money; however we were too late to partake of that on the Friday evening so it was a la carte and the specials menu all the way! It was starting to get busy but the staff seemed to be coping well - at least until they tried to serve us with the wrong set of starters... things went slightly downhill after that. Next, my side dish of butternut squash failed to arrive with my main course of hake. Our server was very apologetic of course, and once remedied it arrived fairly promptly - or at least before the fish went cold. The next hiccup was with the order of our second bottle of wine. The first had been a complimentary one that you get on your return visit if you register with them on their website, so naturally we took full advantage of that! However, when the wine waiter brought the second bottle (recommended by the house), he erroneously said it was a Languedoc wine, when in actual fact it was from the Loire. That's a pretty basic mistake for a wine waiter to make, and blaming it on his line manager is a pretty feeble excuse that smacks of poor training. Then another flask of water arrived, although we hadn't even started the first one as they had failed to provide water glasses! Oh well, we'll just carry on with the wine, shall we? We had enough room for dessert, and at this point our ever-apologetic server surprised us by offering a half-bottle of dessert wine for the table at her own expense. Jolly nice it was too. Clearly they were having a bad night when we visited; however the actual food was top notch, the staff could not have been more attentive and apologetic, and they did their utmost to sort things out. I don't blame them for the cock-ups and it certainly will not stop me from enjoying the delicious food here in future.

You'd think that countless raving reviews, well - more comments - from friends and friends of friends would not make my body do such things. Yet, there I was. Thankfully, after adjusting to being out in a restaurant - that I had NOT been in before - situated in the glittering, glamorous West End and with the boy, I had a grand time. The food attempts to be 'authentically Scottish'; pardon the British category above, but Scottish is not an option on the list. This is most likely due to Scottish food seeming to consist of fish suppers and the like. Anyhow, there is a good range of 'Scottish' food here, as well as steaks, chicken dishes and the usual pasta/pizza/burger stuff you can expect to get anywhere now-a-days. The prices could be a little much but if you make the most of their lunch or pre-theatre deals you'll be laughing as much as your bursting belly can. Additionally, try the cocktails they are to die for. Although, sadly they are not included in the lunch/pre-theatre deals...

It's the perfect place to take your parents if you're tired of getting the same ole Italian. Scottish menu, beautiful set up, excellent service, and absolutely delicious. It's classy without the attitude, and it's perfect. I stuffed myself absolutely full, though I didn't realise it at the time. I didn't look like a lot of food when I saw it, but it adds up course by delicious course. To top it off, I ordered a cheese plate for my dessert, and, full of local cheeses, it was absolutely splendid. Everything about this restaurant is very well thought out. I was wholly impressed by the entire visit. The only wee part about it was having to take the lift to get to the toilets. But other than that, I can't find any fault with it at all.

Having never been inside I wasn't sure what to expect - a really nice pub style vibe was my guess,…read moreso I was shocked to walk into find a beautiful full blow vintage style large dining room. The interior is really gorgeous and has a feel of cool supper club with wooden floors, leather seats and wood paneling. I especially loved the circular booths along the back wall and the art work was gorgeous. However something wasn't sitting right with me about the interior and after sitting for a few minutes I finally put my finger on it - they used paper table cloths over the linen ones.....REALLY?? They have clearly spent a fortune on the interior, the food isn't cheap and the staff are suited and booted to look stylish and slick and you use paper table cloths? I hate them anyway but in these surroundings found it particularly jarring because everything else was so lovely. The menu in Urban is really really appealing to my taste and everything sounded so delicious. In the end I decided to start with the Braised Beef Cheek served with Parsnip Puree and Crispy Leeks. I'm going to start with the positives - the Puree was deliciously smooth and perfectly seasoned and the beef was tasty and fell apart. The negatives for me were the crispy leeks which weren't crispy, they were chewy and tasted like dried grass and the gravy was quite weird it tasted really flavoursome but the texture was quite gloopy and slimy. Having said that other than the leeks I scoffed the lot. For my main I went for the Lemon Sole grilled which normally comes with Chips and Tartar Sauce. I asked for the fish fillets to come with a side of rocket and parmesan instead. When it arrived the side salad was covered in Balsamic Glaze ( I asked for it without) so it was sent back and the lovely waitress apologised - no harm done. I have no real strong thoughts on my main to be honest, the fish was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious and the salad was lovely with lots of big slices of morish parmesan. No complaints I would happily eat this again. I noticed though that the chips looked like they might be frozen chips - I may be totally wrong but they definitely did not look like a delicious fresh chip. I would expect somewhere with these prices (£55 for 2 for 2 courses) would be serving a gorgeous triple cooked chips. I don't know what it is but I left Urban feeling quite disappointed, I think possibly when I saw the interior that I was expecting fine dinning but it wasn't it was pretty decent food but it didn't blow my mind. If you asked me what they did wrong I would struggle to answer you all I can put it down to was that my expectations were raised to the potential of an exceptional meal but in reality it was just a perfectly good meal.

The interior of the restaurant is lovely - it would be a nice venue for a special meal. The set menu had plenty of choice - not always the case. We both opted for the prawn and fennel cocktail to start. This was delicious - really light and fresh. For my main I had sea bass with mozzarella and tomato salad. Cheese and fish isn't a combination I would usually go for but it really worked here. To finish off I had a latte and a selection of cheeses served with oatcakes. A lovely end to a lovely meal. I will definitely be returning to sample the evening menu.

Great for Breakfasts as it's usually really quiet and you can get a couch to yourself - serving cereal, porridge, cooked breakfasts and the like, so you can hit that after a hungover right before an early tutorial. Hmm, maybe avoid the scrambeled eggs though, I wasn't too happy with mine when I was last there. Lunch is somewhat busier, but the food is almost like gourmet fast food, with nicely made up dishes sitting out on the hotplates to be picked up if anyone fancies it - obviously at a price though - reduced for student and staff. Much better than a plate of greasy chips and cheese! Therefore it beats the QMU and the GU by miles, rather on a par with the Hub.

I've spent most of my uni career grabbing some pre-made sandwich from Gregg's or the like and then gobbling it down quickly, and pretty secretively, while in front of a computer screen somewhere trying to desperately finish an essay/reading/something that has an imminent deadline. So, when I had to brave this new pasture in order to have a coffee and a chat over an upcoming project with a lecturer this was a surprise. It's in part of the main building so is large, airy and - let's face it - cold. However, you can see the original brick work, high ceilings and lovely glass windows. It also has a good mix of sofas and traditional table/chair affairs for when you need a proper sitting at the table position. The food is miles ahead of union food (The Food Factory is called that for a reason, am I right??) but not quite up there with non-uni places. Though, for the prices, venue and self-service elements, it's better than hiding behind a computer stuffing a sandwich in your gob.

I really didn't know where it was but thankfully Leanne told me it faces Charing Cross station so that narrowed it down to just four sides to explore. I found it on the second - win. If you go to Charing Cross Station from Elmbank Crescent, you will see the Baby Grand from the road to the west side of the station. The Baby Grand is a lot more classy than I expected - something you'd seen in Law & Order with the detectives sipping drinks at the bar, rather than a run down restaurant clinging onto its former beauty. There's a restaurant seating area at the back which is where we had lunch, and more casual dining at the front. The menu is simple: two courses for £9 with dishes like chicken liver parfait, salt and pepper squid, haddock and chips and sandwiches. I was going to just get a main until Leanne told me about the Monte Cristo sandwich (£8.25 with skinny fries). It's made from French toast. A French toast sandwich?! Who's ever heard of such a thing?! Then it's filled with roast chicken, ham and cheese. Oh my days. I had to have it in my face, immediately. It didn't take long to arrive and was just as ridiculous as it sounds. Cheesy, oozy and kind of stodgy, but not in a bad way. In a delicious, carby way. I love chicken and ham together and the filling was perfect, fresh, lovely and tasty. I actually couldn't eat it all (I had just had soup for brunch) but I made sure I ate as much of the filling as I could. The skinny fries were also excellent but they didn't get much of a look in over the sandwich. Service was super friendly and welcoming, and I chatted to the waitress on my way out about the fact I'd never been in. I really want to head back one night when there's music on (it's a piano bar, after all) and really soak up some of those NY vibes.

It's located towards the top of Princes Square and is absolutely huge when you get inside - there's a bar area and a massive restaurant, as well as a private dining space. And not forgetting the terrace which seems like the most popular space on a sunny day. We had a drink at the bar and then moved to sit in the restaurant which was empty - but it felt like being in an exclusive private dining rather than weird, which was nice. The back of the restaurant looks over the courtyard behind Princes Square. I opted for the 2 course quick lunch which is £15. While the rest of the menu sounded quite tasty, I couldn't resist the chargrilled asparagus with poached egg and hollandaise, followed by the baked goats cheese and beetroot salad with walnuts. Both these dishes were exceptional and I was really pleased with just how good they were, especially on a quick lunch menu. The asparagus was delicious (although I always love asparagus) and had just the right amount of hollandaise. While you can't see it in the photo, there was a massive portion of goats cheese - I was in total heaven. I felt a bit virtuous for ordering a salad but I'm not sure that counts when most of it is cheese. That being said, the leaves of the salad were delicious and I managed to finish off the whole plate. Service was friendly and helpful, and there was a decent choice of drinks. While it was pretty quiet when we were there (Thursday lunch + sunshine), I'd been keen to head back for Friday night drinks. They even have their own sneaky express entrance from the rear entry to Princes Square!
