Hee hee - you had to be there!

My first visit to Brown's was a few years back when it first opened, and I remember quite liking the place. The interior is slick, and the place felt fairly sophisticated, so when my friend opted for here for her birthday dinner, I was looking forward to trying it again. Our party of thirteen arrived on time (for once) and we were seated at a well set out long table. Often with larger group bookings you find they've forgotten about you and/or you're squashed together, but this wasn't the case. We'd been told beforehand that the place was closing for refurbishment which meant we had to be out by 8pm but this didn't seem like a problem given our table was booked for 5.45. Orders for drinks were taken swiftly while we browsed the menu. Unfortunately because we were a larger group we were limited to the group party menu, which was a bit of a let down as it did limit the number of veggie choices. At 2 courses for £18 or 3 for £23 it wasn't ridiculous but being slightly nit picky, had I ordered the same main from the main menu and a dessert it would have been cheaper! Anyhow, that aside my veggie choices were between a beetroot and goats cheese tart or the house salad. Sadly I really hate beetroot - (honestly I've tried to like it), so the house salad it was, although I opted to leave off the scattering of hazelnuts. A few of the group had starters of soup which seemed tasty enough although there was some fighting/ swapping over the somewhat inconsistent chunks and types of bread that came with it! The piano player in the corner provided good background music for our chat and hilarity. Onto the mains, my friends had a variety of dishes including the chicken pie, seabass, chicken and chips and steak. On the whole they seemed to all have been reasonable, although we did note the small portion sizes of a few of the dishes and the chicken in the pie seemed a little on the pink side. As for mine... major disappointment. Essentially, I got served a large bowl of watercress with a few bits of apple, pomegranate and spring onion. It was pretty unbelievable that they thought this could be served as a main course salad and at over £10 I thought they were really taking the mickey. It had a nice pineapple dressing mind you. The advertised grilled chicory, tenderstem broccoli and asparagus on the menu were non existent in my poor wee salad. Not one to complain I ate it regardless, but did feel totally unsatisfied. It wasn't until later that I spoke to my friend further up the table who had the same and suggested we mention it. No explanation was offered but the waitress did go off and speak to someone (the chef I imagine), and said they'd only charge us for one salad which was better than nothing as a result. I wasn't feeling too confident about dessert, but needed something more substantial so opted for the salted caramel profiteroles. Not being a cream lover this isn't something I'd normally choose, but they were in fact really unusual and tasty - coated in a yummy chocolate and caramel sauce they were pretty moreish. Others opted for the apple pie and burnt cream which were pretty standard. As a side note we were entertained by the staff who appeared to be cling-filming the glasses and pots. Thinking this was a nightly routine we had some giggles around the extra large cling film machine and staff being cling-filmed at the end of the night. Only did we then remember the refurbishment ... ahhh it all make sense now! Anyway we had a good night despite the food not being that fantastic although the 20% service charge did seem a little cheeky and we weren't rushing to tip on top of this. With so many independent restaurants in Glasgow I definitely wouldn't choose to rush back to Brown's although the service and experience on the whole made for an enjoyable night.

I visited Brown's a couple of times when it first opened (way back in 2011) but haven't been back since. I was meeting Graeme in town and needed somewhere around George Square to kill time, so headed here. It was busy and bustling (it was Friday night, after all) and I got a seat easily. The staff seemed happy to leave me on my own until I asked to order a drink - yes, I was meeting someone but I didn't know how long he was going to be. I ordered a drink and it arrived within about 10 minutes which wasn't too bad considering how busy it was. I tried the untraditional lemonade (cocktail) made from gin, lemonade, green tea, cucumber and strawberries. It was £5 and for a drink that price, it was fine - not ground breaking, memorable or leaving me wanting another one. Graeme arrived and instead of ordering another drink and waiting another 10 minutes we headed off. Brown's is nice, it's got a glam vibe to it and the staff are polished and slick. There is just something missing here for me, and I can't see myself remembering here when I'm looking for somewhere to go for a drink in town next time.

I would call Browns snobby rather than classy, and even smarted up I feel a bit out of place. But having a £20 e-voucher as apologies for a data leak, I opted for a wee Gin afternoon tea, which only added £4 to our bill. NOW, if I had been paying for it I would have been a bit miffed at paying £8 extra (£16 for standard, £24 for gin) for just two single gins. The tea tray wasn't overly filled, but just a nice amount of sandwiches and cake. Special shoutout goes to THE BEST profiteroles I've ever tasted. Now, I realise that could be a controversial given that the chocolate is milk rather than dark, but the taste is divinity in dessert form. The tea was a bit cold, and they couldn't find a lid for the pot (!) so it didn't stay warm for very long. The waiting staff were just lovely, and were attentive without being crowding. In summary, I wouldn't choose to go there, as it's quite pricey for what it is, and I don't feel there's atmosphere.

My partner and I visited before Christmas. Unsure if it was because we were younger than the average customer on a Monday afternoon but it took nearly 10 minutes for us to be served at the bar (which was not busy) and other people were served before my partner. When we were served the waiting staff were great and they catered well to Gluten free requirement. We had a voucher for £10 off to use so we returned. However the second attempt to visit was without a reservation about 4.30 on a Friday and to be honest I was not impressed about their reservations on if they could accommodate us without a reservation.. I would return to Brown's for lunch because the food was great and the location Is lovely but I'd book in advance and I would wear at least smart casual dress as it is clearly a classy place. Mixed bag with some disappointment but overall nice place and nice food.

Anytime I've ever been to Browns I've had a good time, and that definitely says something about a place. I normally go here for drinks before dinner or drinks after dinner, and I love it! The staff are great, the range of cocktails, wines and beers is huge and the decor is lovely and suave. There's also a massive grand piano in the room that is frequently being played for the customers by fantastic musicians. There's a range of food available too on a decent looking menu, but I've never actually eaten in here! Great place for drinks and a meet up with friends, or indeed food!

Thursday's are lobster night & you can get a whole lobster for £19.95! The cocktails are huge (my piña colada was a pint!) & not over priced. There is a pianist playing contemporary songs from 6-9. Trendy but not overpriced.

My husband and I visited Brown's for dinner on a quick two night trip to Glasgow. I have dietary restrictions and although I can pretty much pick at least ONE thing off of any menu, it feels good to walk into a beautiful establishment such as Brown's and be handed a gluten free with a smile. Our waiter, unfortunately I didn't catch his name, was cheerful, friendly, and attentive. DELICIOUS food and lovely drink, beautiful decor and an inviting ambience made this a win for us . I would recommend Brown's to anyone visiting Glasgow.

I'm not a huge fan of northern French cuisine as it tends to have too much dairy in it for my taste; however Cote are very amenable to offering alternatives where possible so I didn't have much trouble finding something acceptable. Their lunch and early evening menu is very good value for money; however we were too late to partake of that on the Friday evening so it was a la carte and the specials menu all the way! It was starting to get busy but the staff seemed to be coping well - at least until they tried to serve us with the wrong set of starters... things went slightly downhill after that. Next, my side dish of butternut squash failed to arrive with my main course of hake. Our server was very apologetic of course, and once remedied it arrived fairly promptly - or at least before the fish went cold. The next hiccup was with the order of our second bottle of wine. The first had been a complimentary one that you get on your return visit if you register with them on their website, so naturally we took full advantage of that! However, when the wine waiter brought the second bottle (recommended by the house), he erroneously said it was a Languedoc wine, when in actual fact it was from the Loire. That's a pretty basic mistake for a wine waiter to make, and blaming it on his line manager is a pretty feeble excuse that smacks of poor training. Then another flask of water arrived, although we hadn't even started the first one as they had failed to provide water glasses! Oh well, we'll just carry on with the wine, shall we? We had enough room for dessert, and at this point our ever-apologetic server surprised us by offering a half-bottle of dessert wine for the table at her own expense. Jolly nice it was too. Clearly they were having a bad night when we visited; however the actual food was top notch, the staff could not have been more attentive and apologetic, and they did their utmost to sort things out. I don't blame them for the cock-ups and it certainly will not stop me from enjoying the delicious food here in future.

You'd think that countless raving reviews, well - more comments - from friends and friends of friends would not make my body do such things. Yet, there I was. Thankfully, after adjusting to being out in a restaurant - that I had NOT been in before - situated in the glittering, glamorous West End and with the boy, I had a grand time. The food attempts to be 'authentically Scottish'; pardon the British category above, but Scottish is not an option on the list. This is most likely due to Scottish food seeming to consist of fish suppers and the like. Anyhow, there is a good range of 'Scottish' food here, as well as steaks, chicken dishes and the usual pasta/pizza/burger stuff you can expect to get anywhere now-a-days. The prices could be a little much but if you make the most of their lunch or pre-theatre deals you'll be laughing as much as your bursting belly can. Additionally, try the cocktails they are to die for. Although, sadly they are not included in the lunch/pre-theatre deals...

I had chicken, which was cooked nicely and came with just-right portions of mash, spinach and tomatoes. My boyfriend had salmon, which wasn't the best ever tasted, but still decent. Most of the problems we had, had to do with the service. We had reservations for 8:00, and we arrived on-time. However, though the website advertised free parking for patrons, it was unclear where this parking was. When I went in to ask, the man at the check-in station first told me, in a very rude tone, that there WAS no free parking for hotel guests. When I told him I wasn't a hotel guest, but had reservations at the restaurant, and that the website explicitly said, in a giant, red banner that there was free parking, he said oh, it's at the Concert Square car park and if you bring in your ticket, they'll validate it. Free parking might not be a big deal to some, but we're on a tight budget and needed to economize where we could to enjoy a fancier night out than we usually get to have, without going broke. I stepped outside to call my boyfriend, who had dropped me off to ask while he looked for parking, then came back in. I told the man that I'd like to go ahead and get our table, and he stuck his hand in my face and said "I'll be right with you," then walked off. When he came back, he said they were just clearing our table and it would be ready in just a moment. Half an hour later, after watching 3 other sets of couples be seated, my boyfriend went to ask about it and was told that they were just then clearing a table for us. Another 15 minutes later, we were seated. 15 minutes after that, a waiter showed up, asked for our drink, entree, and dessert orders all at once, which annoyed me. The whole time we were there, it was as if we were being rushed through, while the staff had as little to do with us as possible. I would have ordered coffee with dessert, since someone nearby had one and it smelled good, but I never got the opportunity. All in all, I'm very glad that we had a 2 for 1 voucher, which was the initial reason we went to this place in the first place, because while the food was tasty, it by itself wasn't worth £17 + drinks and an "optional" 12.5% gratuity added to the bill (by this, they mean they automatically add it on and you have to ask for it to be removed). For those prices, I expect good service and hospitality, but frankly, I've had better service at Waffle House. Even with the voucher we used (like I said, we're on a budget - you know how it is), I still don't really feel like we got a good value. If you're looking for someplace a little special to have a nice night out, I'd say: keep looking. If you have buckets of money and don't care if you spend it on just-pretty-good food and not-good service, have at it. Oh, and I'm not sure what the Mr. Uppity McSnoot's problem was with me - maybe it was that I'm female, American, or quite a bit taller than he was, but the man I dealt with in the first place and who eventually seated us kept deferring to my (Scottish, slightly less tall) boyfriend and being perfectly polite to him after being really scoffy and rude to me. P.S. We came home to find that the restaurant sent an email, timestamped 8:30 PM (our reservation was for 8, remember?) to say that our time had been switched to 9:15. What's the point in sending an email when the patrons will have already been expecting a table for half an hour? Had they called us to inform us of the change, we'd have canceled, since we'd pre-booked cinema tickets for 9:30.

We stayed for a few hours drinking wine and eating crisps! I have to say the bar area has a really nice and relaxed atmosphere. It was really quiet only a few other tables, mainly people down from the attached hotel, so we had the privacy to talk between ourselves. The bar service was quite slow, they only had one bartender on and she was also dealing with all the drinks orders from the restaurant side, so that was a bit annoying for her and em. It's pretty pricey, but the wine we had was extremely nice (the Pinot I think), so we didn't mind forking out for a bottle (or two, or three!). Over all I'd really recommend this bar if you: a) Were popping in for a quick drink with relatives/colleagues/anyone you wanted to impress or b) were meeting your (possibly potential) significant other for a nice date night. I think it would be a nice location to start, or end, a date. I'd definitely come back for drinks here.

However something wasn't sitting right with me about the interior and after sitting for a few minutes I finally put my finger on it - they used paper table cloths over the linen ones.....REALLY?? They have clearly spent a fortune on the interior, the food isn't cheap and the staff are suited and booted to look stylish and slick and you use paper table cloths? I hate them anyway but in these surroundings found it particularly jarring because everything else was so lovely. The menu in Urban is really really appealing to my taste and everything sounded so delicious. In the end I decided to start with the Braised Beef Cheek served with Parsnip Puree and Crispy Leeks. I'm going to start with the positives - the Puree was deliciously smooth and perfectly seasoned and the beef was tasty and fell apart. The negatives for me were the crispy leeks which weren't crispy, they were chewy and tasted like dried grass and the gravy was quite weird it tasted really flavoursome but the texture was quite gloopy and slimy. Having said that other than the leeks I scoffed the lot. For my main I went for the Lemon Sole grilled which normally comes with Chips and Tartar Sauce. I asked for the fish fillets to come with a side of rocket and parmesan instead. When it arrived the side salad was covered in Balsamic Glaze ( I asked for it without) so it was sent back and the lovely waitress apologised - no harm done. I have no real strong thoughts on my main to be honest, the fish was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious and the salad was lovely with lots of big slices of morish parmesan. No complaints I would happily eat this again. I noticed though that the chips looked like they might be frozen chips - I may be totally wrong but they definitely did not look like a delicious fresh chip. There's a restaurant seating area at the back which is where we had lunch, and more casual dining at the front. The menu is simple: two courses for £9 with dishes like chicken liver parfait, salt and pepper squid, haddock and chips and sandwiches. I was going to just get a main until Leanne told me about the Monte Cristo sandwich (£8.25 with skinny fries). It's made from French toast. A French toast sandwich?! Who's ever heard of such a thing?! Then it's filled with roast chicken, ham and cheese. Oh my days. I had to have it in my face, immediately. Service was great and not overly attentive- thank you for that! The food, again, we were apprehensive since it was empty but happily we were wrong again. The food was very good and the portions were more than generous. Thank you for a great meal!

Firstly it is huge inside and the decor is very nice and relaxed but not too relaxed. It was pretty empty when we arrived but was pretty full by the time we left. As it was Easter Sunday we were opting for roast dinners all around. £25 for 2 for a full roast with all the trimmings. I had the lamb which was delicious and cooked perfect. I normally would always go beef but time for a change and my goodness it was for the best. Served up with little roast potatoes and some veg. Washed down with some lovely red wine! The service was outstanding.a group of 10 people including kids and the staff were so good every little detail was covered. Excellent and a must for a lamb roast!

I am definitely guilty of judging this restaurant on its name, and for that reason I'd never been…read morebefore. I figured that dull name = dull food, but I was definitely wrong. It's located towards the top of Princes Square and is absolutely huge when you get inside - there's a bar area and a massive restaurant, as well as a private dining space. And not forgetting the terrace which seems like the most popular space on a sunny day. We had a drink at the bar and then moved to sit in the restaurant which was empty - but it felt like being in an exclusive private dining rather than weird, which was nice. The back of the restaurant looks over the courtyard behind Princes Square. I opted for the 2 course quick lunch which is £15. While the rest of the menu sounded quite tasty, I couldn't resist the chargrilled asparagus with poached egg and hollandaise, followed by the baked goats cheese and beetroot salad with walnuts. Both these dishes were exceptional and I was really pleased with just how good they were, especially on a quick lunch menu. The asparagus was delicious (although I always love asparagus) and had just the right amount of hollandaise. While you can't see it in the photo, there was a massive portion of goats cheese - I was in total heaven. I felt a bit virtuous for ordering a salad but I'm not sure that counts when most of it is cheese. That being said, the leaves of the salad were delicious and I managed to finish off the whole plate. Service was friendly and helpful, and there was a decent choice of drinks. While it was pretty quiet when we were there (Thursday lunch + sunshine), I'd been keen to head back for Friday night drinks. They even have their own sneaky express entrance from the rear entry to Princes Square!
