You can't help but feel drawn to the pub that lies next to the subway station. Its a handy watering hole if you've just got off the train. Or indeed if you're one of the many students who enjoy the Glasgow 'Sub-crawl'. Or if you're like me and you live further away, meaning you can get absolutely scooped in the pub then only have to stagger a few metres to the train.
Curlers on Byres Road (part of the Scream pub chain) lies right next to Hillhead underground station on the busy Byres Road, making it one of the most convenient drinking establishments in Glasgow. But all this would matter little if the pub itself was a complete dive. So what's it like?
If you're familiar with Scream pubs, you'll know pretty much what to expect from this place. Cheap drinks, cheap food and flat-screen TVs showing the very best live sport and music videos. The music vids are controlled from a jukebox, which has an excellent, varied collection of genres to please everyone.
The pub is spacious, has two floors, each with it's own bar, plus pool tables. As well as some smaller tables with stools, there are a few larger table with sofas, giving the place a nice 'living room' feel to it. The decor is clean and attractive - not extremely plush, but suitable for what it is: quite a 'studenty' establishment, being quite near to Glasgow University. Although students form a large part of the clientele, there is a good mixture of people from all age groups most of the time.
The 'beer and burger' is a very popular choice on the food menu, availible after 3pm every day, for a mere £3.95. On my recent visit the pint and burger arrived within 15 minutes, which was very reasonable.
The burger was big enough, but I was surprised to see it came with a big dollop of mayonnaise on it. Sure, it may not have been quite the most heart-crushing moment of my life, but since when has mayonnaise became an integral part of the everyday beefburger? I guess I'm sounding a bit like Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David now, but when you buy a car, you don't expect it to have a bike rack fixed to the roof.
However, after scraping off the mayonaisse, the burger was actually very tasty indeed. My friend ordered fish and chips, and, in fact, his portion was so large that he ended up giving half of the chips to me! A very yummy chocolate fudge cake with cream for desert added only an extra £2.95 to the bill. As well as the £3.95 for the beer and a pint, and £5.95 for the huge portion of fish 'n' chips, that's excellent value for money.
The drink prices in Curlers are also very good value for money when you consider the prices elsewhere in Glasgow, with between £2 and £2.40 for a pint of lager. Both the pints and the spirits are also nicely chilled and the Jack Daniels and Coke was actually one of the best I'd tasted in my life.
Finally, the staff are quite young, friendly and helpful. It rounds up what is, on the whole, a warm and friendly bar, which is very good value for money. The cheap drinks and food are ideal if you are one of the many students in the area - far better prices than most other places in the West End, especially the nearby Ashton Lane.
So, if you're ever wandering off the subway at Hillhead and looking for cheap drinks in a nice atmosphere, you need only walk a few feet. Highly recommended. read more
