Even if you are not a whiskey fan, this place is worth visiting if you're in town. Just to see their ginormous, or hmm, whiskey-normous, selection of bottles lining the wall, and the bartenders going up and down the ladders to fetch them. This may prompt you to feel like ordering a drink. You are in good hands and they can totally recommend something that you may like. Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. Seems like a rite of passage. If you are in Glasgow, like spirits, and you didn't make it into The Pot Still, then were you really, do you really? The place is pretty small. Not tiny, but for the crowds jammed in there, it sure feels postage-stamp-sized. An enormous selection of whiskies. They have all parts of Scotland covered. Decent number of taps, too. So Tennent's was easy to find. Great place to end the night, or start it. Just don't expect to sit down! read more

My husband and I only had one day to spend in Glasgow and it was unfortunately an extremely rainy one. We had some lofty goals to do a bunch of outdoor sightseeing, but we found ourselves in a rainy pickle. We snagged a seat in the upstairs loft area and my husband found out that they have several different types of whisky flights based off of the different regions. We decided to do a flight with Lowland & Speyside whiskies since I'm not a huge fan of heavy or peaty whiskies. The flight came with a guide explaining each pour, including its name, what the bottle looks like, and what notes you'll taste. I'm a whisky novice so I really enjoyed this laidback, self-guided experience. Best of all...6 of those really generous pours came out to be around £23 which is so affordable! The distilleries are cool and all.. but if you are hanging out in Glasgow for the arts and would like to try something different, this is the place to go. They boast over 700 bottles of whiskys here, and their shelves are stacked so high, the bartender has a sliding ladder to get to some of the bottles. There almost always is a weekly special; I sometimes get that just to try, but I've mostly asked the bartender to recommend something new to me based on a couple of my favourites. It's always nice to discover a new brand or vintage that has a similar but slightly different flavour profile. While I was in town, I couldn't resist coming here to hang out every night after dinner. They have a good amount of seating space, but there are so many people who come here that it's pretty packed most the time. I don't declare to know much history of this fine olde Glasgow Pub, but I would feel safe saying, The Pot Still is classic landmark that should not go unseen and experienced. This is a Must Do while in Glasgow. We had just 2 free hours to shop, stroll the cobble avenues, and wind up at door step of The Pot Still. Five PM (1500 Glasgow), a nice mix of local gents & lass's, and tourists (us) all enjoying a pint and/or a Scotch Whiskey. I've been very pleased to see smoking has been taken outdoors in Scotland. The air was fresh and clear in the pub. Our Tender, offered taster samples of the drafts and Cider. The Mrs had a Magners Irish Cider & I a Golden Ale, called Pixel Bandit from Lawman Brewing Co. in Cumbernauld, Scotland. Have you had one of those days where nothing is particularly wrong but nothing particularly goes right? It is like the world is just a half beat behind or I was a half beat ahead. I am not sure. It was one of those days. My friend and I had a day to spend in Glasgow and we wandered the city to find things to do. Glasgow is a lovely city but it seemed like we arrived just too early for lunch and then kept missing opportunities. I just felt off. Our tour guide recommended The Pot Still if we liked whisky and yes, yes I do so after a few missteps we went there. When we arrived there wasn't many people. A couple tables were occupied with a person a piece but that was it. My spirits were instantly risen when we approached the bar and decided to make a mini flight of whisky. The guys who helped us were fantastic! They were fun, made laugh, and very helpful. My friend likes Islays and the guys found it amusing when I told them that the more it tasted like dirt or a bonfire the more my friend would like it. Yet they found him two that met his requirements and he was pleased as punch. I love my Speyside whisky and they gave me a couple that were smooth and warming. I was thrilled. I loved the selection. I loved the people. And I thought the whole thing was delightful. This really made my day. read more

On a solo trip to Glasgow, I Stumbled into this pub to have a taste of Scottish Whiskey. As a young female traveling alone, I was a bit nervous, but didn't want to let that stand in the way. The bartender was absolutely incredible. I walked in with no prior knowledge to whiskey, let alone Scottish whiskey and walked out knowing a great deal. The pub was extremely busy as it was a Saturday night, but the bartender talked to me for about 10 minutes about the many different types of whiskey, even allowing me to smell a few to choose my drink. With how busy it was, I absolutely did not expect this amount of customer service. If whisky is your thing, this is the place to come. I'm ashamed that it has taken me so long to get to it. It's a proper old-fashioned pub, none of your fancy gastro-pub nonsense; you're here to drink, and drink you shall. I was pleasantly surprised to see Heverlee ale on tap, however I decided against a beer as the place was absolutely heaving to the point where at least 10 people had to do a shimmy to let you get through to the bar (it was a Friday night), and I didn't fancy the prospect of having a pint of beer knocked over me. Whisky it was, and after a short time perusing the hugely extensive 'wall of whisky', I settled for a Scapa, an Orcadian malt that I had somehow managed to avoid on my recent trips to Orkney. Jolly nice it was too. Although we did eventually manage to shoehorn ourselves into a bench seat, we never managed to penetrate the interior more than a few steps from the front door, and as conversation was limited due to the general hullabaloo, we didn't stay as long as I would have liked. I'll definitely have to return when it's a bit quieter. read more

How very remiss of me not to have written a review of the very marvellous whisky emporium The Pot Still. Better late than never. There's a very good reason why scotch-lovers from all over the world beat a path to the door of this city centre bar. It's in all the guide books and has just won Whisky Bar of the Year. They don't mess around with fancy food here. Yes you can get a pie from the pie warmer on the bar or some other simple snack, but the main event is whisky and my goodness they have a lot of the stuff. While the staff know pretty much all there is to know about whisky and are keen to share their enthusiasm, beer drinkers aren't in any way neglected. So, -that- happened... Me: Hello, are you all serving dinner? Bartender: We don't serve food here. Me: Oh. [awkward pause] I get it - you just serve whisky. No worries, I'll have a dram while I'm here anyhow. Have anything peaty? Bartender: Sure, we have- Stranger who just showed up: You could have a Laphroaig. Me: ... [I'm thinking to myself I'd rather try something new...] Bartender: How about a Bowmore? Me: Sounds great, I've not had that one before, and it's an Islay. Bartender: That's great then. [pours a dram] That'll be £3.70 then. Me: [forks over cash] Later on... Man of the couple: I'll take a Guinness please. Lady of the couple: I'll have a bloody mary please. Bartender: Er... what's in a bloody mary? Man: This isn't that kind of place... Lady: Oh. Haha. I'll take a red wine then. While I don't feel wholly redeemed, I sure feel a lot better. Ah, shaudenfreude! No, The Pot Still doesn't serve food, but they serve booze. And lots of it. In fact, there's a whole wall full of single malts - some of which I've never even seen or heard of before! That's in addition to the half-dozen taps for beer, mini-fridge of wine, and another mini-fridge or two of bottled brews. Way low key on a Sunday early evening. My wife and I were in Glasgow for a business trip and had finished up dinner across the street from this establishment. I originally just wanted to look at the place to see if it was worth checking out in the future. Then I read the story on the outside about the history of the place and saw something about over 300 malts. 300 malts?! I immediately looked at my wife with the same face a 7-year-old gives to his mother when he's found a puppy and wants to keep it. We needed to stop in for a dram. Or 5. We walked in and were greeted with a pub created exactly the way I'd expect a Scotland pub to be created. Small. Short bar area just off to the side of the door. Benches and tables along the walls both downstairs and upstairs. Oh, and the selection behind the bar - whiskies as far as the eye could see. Yes, I may have shed a tear. After finding a spot to settle in on a 75% full Thursday night I walked up to the bar to order my first whisky. I simply asked for a Highland that I couldn't get in the US. The bartender smiled a knowing smile, said, "Sure, not a problem", and she was off. She came back with a couple of bottles for me to check out and, once I made my selection, poured out my dram, my beer back, and my wife's Bailey's/rocks. (She hasn't quite started drinking whisky yet. Yet.) I settled back in at the corner with my wife to enjoy. For that moment all in the universe was just perfect. Between that night and two more visits I was able to sample many a single malt. Every time I had a conversation about what was going to be next the bartenders were able to select a few items, talk about each one highlighting different notes about them, and each time I was pointed at exactly what I was looking for. Never before have I seen people with that amazing of a level of knowledge about whisky. I was able to benefit in both gained knowledge and, of course, the chance to enjoy amazing whisky. If you're a whisky fan you owe it to yourself to visit Pot Still. If you've arrived from elsewhere, have the cabbie take you to your hotel just long enough to drop off your bags and then have them bring you here - this is where you want to be. Ken may no longer be with us - but this place continues on as a whisky powerhouse with a lovely soft approach to the joy of Uisge Beatha. There are some very nice drams on sale here - ask and the folks behind the bar are sure to help. When you enter here - please take some time and admire the architecture not adorned by bottles. It really is a lovely pub. Finally., the best thing about this place are the patrons. I have had numerous conversations with Glasgow folks while sipping a nice dram. Maybe it is the whisky. My 2015 resolution was to learn to drink whisky - and, as it was with beer, I suspect it's going to take me a while. So some awesome friends and I visited the Pot Still so they could start my whisky education on Friday night. I'm so ashamed to admit this was my first visit. Yes, the Pot Still won best Yelp nightlife venue in 2014 but it took me until this week to finally get in there. As I burst through those doors I immediately realised the error of my ways - this is just the kind of city centre pub I've been searching for. A bit of an old man boozer but in a classy way, and with a wall of whisky to please most tastebuds. It's got a proper cosy feel as well as very welcoming, no matter how much of a whisky noob you are. My friends showed me this handy flavour chart of whisky so you can pick one to suit your tastes - light, delicate, smoky. I went for the Jura 10 year old as it was nicely tucked in between light and delicate (just how I'd describe myself). The bar staff were lovely and quickly served me up a dram (look at me, I know the lingo). I also grabbed a diet coke and a glass of water and all up the bill was around £5 - bargain! I believe their serves are larger than the standard (35ml) and I won't lie - my first whisky drinking effort really didn't go that well as I could only manage half of it.
