My girlfriend and i came in one night during a trip to Glasgow, and the place was packed but still eager to serve. The bartenders will definitely entertain requests for recommendations, but it also feels great to get a glass of whatever you want when there are HUNDREDS of choices. When in Scotland one must drink scotch! And as we are scotch lovers we were very happy to get to try some hard to get whiskey. I did a little research and learned that this is one of the best whiskey bars in town so after our dinner at the Butterfly and the Pig we walked over here. The bar is a classic pub and definitely more of a local hangout than it is a tourist destination. We made our way to the bar, befriended one of the bar maids and got ourselves a little scotch tasting. I'm not much a fan of peaty scotches but everything else we tried were tremendous. In particular we were absolutely in love with a limited edition bottle of Glendronach and ended up finishing what they had left. Yes, it was a great time and I'd definitely come back if I were ever in Glasgow again. read more

Literally one of the best whisky bars I have been to. A friend recommended from when he was living in London and he said he would just come up here to drink at The Pot Still. They have whiskys that have not been in production for 30+ years so if you are a whisky hunter look no further. They have a whisky bible. If you have not had hundreds of whisky in your life, do not bother. You can just look up and see something in the region you may like or that you have not had, and they will tell you about it. If it does not fancy you, move on to the next. If you say you like Glengoyne 18 and Glenfiddich 15 they will recommend something that fits between that flavor profile that you are guaranteed to enjoy. God, I drank a lot here and I remember how I moved down the bottles the barman recommended. I enjoyed several special whiskies you generally do not see in regular bars ranging from £4- £30. Compared to bars in New York, this place was a steal. You can get a Macallan 12 in New York for pretty much £18 now so having a 25 year old Caol Ila for £30 is a bargain. I did not bother looking at the bill at the end of the night, I knew they would not take advantage. It is very easy to make friends here if you are traveling solo. read more

Although The Pot Still is a great whiskey bar, its real charm is the atmosphere. Somehow balancing the atmosphere of a locals' bar with a friendly and relaxed environment, it is close to the hub of the city centre, without being painfully busy, loud or aggressive. With its two levels, it is great for both an intimate drink or something more social, and attracts a mature crowd. Another must-visit for all the city's whisky aficionados and dram-quaffing tourists. The Pot Still is well renowned for possessing one of the largest ranges (over 600 I believe!), and they're all lined up on an impressive gantry above the bar. It's been a pub for donkey's years and looks/feels like it too - the interior is all white walls that have been repainted over multiple times, leather benches, low stools, dark wood and glass panelling. It's full of charm and because of that, full of punters - you'll have to keep your eyes peeled for a table and move in quickly. They've also a decent selection of mainly Scottish cask ales and rotate their selection of bottled beers. Pies, soup and toasted sarnies are on offer to help soak up the booze. Definitely somewhere to head to if you're in the city centre and in need of some respite. read more

Excellent selection of scotch whisky. I was served by Callum, who was very knowledgeable and helpful. I told him I wanted to try something new and named a few I liked. He chose four options, described each to me and let me smell them. The first choice isn't my favorite, but is pretty good. It was accurately described in terms of flavor. There is a small food menu- mostly pies, but also a sandwich and a soup. I didn't have a chance to sample any since I just ate, but all the food is four pounds or under. A good way to balance out the wall of whisky so you make it home in one piece at the end of the night. read more

The holy grail of whisky houses! Practically a religious experience! With over 500 choices, it's a great place to try a new single malt before splurging for a whole bottle. I tried a 15 year Cardhu and my better half had a 15 year Benromach. Both were excellent recommendations. The atmosphere is classic pub and the prices are excellent. They also serve a variety of homemade pies for between £2.50 and £3.50 which includes peas or beans. Toasties are £3 and paninis are £4.50. I would highly recommend this treasure of all the best whisky Scotland has to offer. read more

I don't know how we ended up here when we were in Glasgow but I sure as hell am glad we did! The only whiskey I used to drink was JD but I'm way more open to trying more now. This place has over 700 whiskies! Amazing! The first time we were there the owner was in and my husband and his friend enjoyed the conversation they had with him. They said he was obviously very passionate and knowledgable about whiskey. We were lucky enough to partake in two different monthly whiskies - we first went the last day of June and went again the next day. I tried the July one (called Smokehead) and loved it. Purposefully embarrassed my husband and his friend by insisting on a Jack and Coke - thank you to the establishment for not throwing us out after that, hahaha! To the owner: if we ever go to Scotland again I'm sure my husband would love to be able to have a chat with you! read more

You'd have to be insane to come through Glasgow and not stop at the Pot Still. It's the holy grail of bars for oh so many reasons. And I say "so many" because truly - a good bar is not just about the spirits selection or the atmosphere - though here you'll find that both are awesome. What the Pot Still has that no other bar in the world has is Frank. Frank is perhaps the most knowledgeable person I have ever encountered when it comes to scotch. And I say this as someone who works in the spirits industry, someone who's married so a professional spirits taster, and someone who in general really loves and appreciates a good dram. I literally came to Scotland on my honeymooon - that's how much I like Scotch! So yeah, Frank fucking rules. The bar is always packed and that's part of the charm. You'll find tourists like myself, you'll find old regulars, and everyone in between. I saw men in suits, people in t-shirts, you name it, I saw it. This is the everyman's bar and it's great. If you manage to get a spot at the bar or to wiggle your way between some folks, the staff (not just Frank) are super prepared to help you find exactly what you're looking for. We did get lucky enough to chat with Frank for quite a bit and not only did he find us some bottles we'd not been able to try back in the states, he knew tons of info about various bottlings and was a treasure trove of knowledge. When we mentioned we were off to Edinburgh the following morning he left and came back with a note that had no fewer than 12 pubs/bars and whisky shops to check out. And they were incredible suggestions, too! We did hit up his recommendations and they were outstanding; not the tourist traps we'd wanted to avoid. Anyway, you're seriously missing out if you don't pop through to give this pub a shot. Frank and his team are amazing and we're so glad we took up the recommendation to find this bar during our one night in town. read more

The Pot Still is quite possibly the best pub in Glasgow. It is to whisky what Forbidden Planet is to comics (see review). Although a wee bit pricey, you are in fact paying for top notch single malt (or bourbon, vodka and beer as you see fit!) The pub itself has two levels and a not bad size but owing to its popularity, it feels quite 'cosy'. In other words it is always jam packed. Tourist love it because they get a wee taste of Scots enjoying whisky in their natural habitat, and Scots love it because it harks back to bygone days. As I mentioned there is a veritable (and given how much I'e drank tonight, 'veritable' is quite impressive) choice of spirits. Whiskies from across Scotland, the US and Japan as well as some top choice vodka. What more can I say? The Pot Still should be an instant marker on your pub crawl list, your Friday payday destination map, your patriotic subconscious!! The next dram's on me :) read more

Still without doubt one of the most down to earth bars you're ever likely to come across in Glasgow. The fact that this place exists in the city centre is just a god send. Choice wise, it's so awesome that words fail to really grasp the awesomeness of it. Best thing to do is go. Feast upon the spender of the wall o whisky. Can't believe I'd never done a review for the awesome Pot Still before! So I'll keep it short and sweet. PROS: -awesome whisky lineup (450+) which may well be the biggest and best in the world -35ml measures for spirits -4 real ales on at any time -wide selection of difficult to source and tasty German beers in their magic fridge -really friendly and helpful staff -old school inside, lovely warm and welcoming feel to the place -only a short walk from Central Station -reasonably priced, especially given its popularity CONS: -sometimes there are too many Americans in the bar (only kidding!) -difficult to get a seat at times due to its size, so those with mobility issues may not enjoy it as much read more

So I'll just add to the rest of 5 star reviews and say that this is my favorite pub in Glasgow, the central belt, Scotland, UK, Europe and quite probably the world, maybe even further afield. This has to be my favourite surprise on the alphabet crawl! Either this or the Talisker my friend bought me in this bar! From the outside this bar is deceiving but once you walk through the portal to the other side you are submerged in a great atmosphere! The owner/main barmen looked awesome with his beard and another take on a 21st Century Kilt! The beers and ales are of good range but it was the whiskey that caught my eyes. A great wee boozer, well known for its huge selection of Whisky (and even a few Whiskey). It also normally has a couple of local Ales on and a decent selection of beers in the fridge. I've heard the pies are good but to be honest I don't go to the Pot Still for the food so I can't say I've tried them. I also overheard one of my all time favourite interactions at the bar here. An American tourist asks "Do you have any Glendronach here?" to which the burly kilt-clad barman replied "What do you think?" before swiftly producing six different kinds of Glendronach from the shelf behind him. But if you go along on a weekend night, or after work during the week, so really any night; don't expect a seat. The bar can get very busy and it is pretty tiny. But it just adds to the atmosphere. Even when it is busy the staff are always happy to spend a few minutes advising any Whisky novices. But if you're really interested go sometime when it's a bit quieter and they'll be more than happy to educate you properly. read more

They have a ridiculous whisky collection and a thick binder of their selection. Prices were very reasonable, and more importantly, they have stuff you can't find in the US. They usually have a malt of the month for £2.50. This month was Highland Park 12, which is standard in the US, but it was just a ridiculously good price. Others we tried: - Bubbahabhain toiteach: £7.95/dram - Longrow 18: basically a peated Springbank at £8-9 a dram (a bottle runs you at least $180 in the US) - Talisker 18: £12.30 a dram Service is super friendly, and they're impressively knowledgeable. I can only hope to know 10% of what the girl who helped us knew. We came on a Monday night around 8pm, and it was full but not overly crowded, so we could spend more time perusing the impressive menu. It seems like their collection is always evolving. The crowd is pretty relaxed here. They have some food, and wifi is free! It's a family owned and run place, which is great, and everyone is clearly passionate about whisky. This is definitely the best combination of whisky selection, prices, and knowledge I've seen. read more

As far as whisky bars go this is Glasgow's most famous and deservedly so. The entire gentry is taken over by mats and blends, except a token vodka here and gin there, from Slay to Speyside and everything in between. Now that the Murphy clan are back the atmosphere has returned to the warm and welcoming kind with food now being served, albeit basic pub staples like pies and soup. This place is complete mystery to me. I am really not sure what all the fuss is about. There is a multitude of 5 star reviews, so I appreciate I must be the one who is missing something. It's an old style, old mans pub. It looks a bit like something you would find in one of the shadier spots on the Subcrawl or on an episode of Still Game. There seemed to be a mixture of locals and some tourists or out of Towners on a day trip. They had very limited draught beer on offer, but I guess that's because their speciality is whiskey. The atmosphere was non existent and the decor looked like it had not been upgraded in about 50 years. We met some very friendly people and also some very unfriendly people as well, buts that's all part of a night out in Glasgow I guess. Standard, unexciting pub. Best pub in Glasgow? Love whiskey? No? Me neither. But I looove the Pot Still. What looks like a tired, old man's pub located near the top of Hope St, is a warm, fuzzy place of good cheer, chat, and tunes. They are a whiskey specialist and have a range of dozens (doesn't even begin to cover it) of malts from here to Japan. I was once told "There's a whiskey for everyone!" and I didn't believe it still I sampled Chivas' Lochan Ora. It's more of a liqueur, technically, but it has a warm, spiced flavour, and goes down a treat as a chaser to one if their draught guest ales. But fear not whiskey fearties! They stock your standard range if spirits and choice ciders, as well as vino and some alcopops. Food comes in the form of a Scotch of steak pie, accompanied by peas or beans, or a toastie. Basically, you're here for the bar, not gastro chic, and the homely, simple eats are stomach liners. Music wise there's a decent range, from modern rock, to the odd chart song. It's not too loud, so you can get chatting to visitors from all over the globe. Most recently I met an engaged couple of lawyers from DC, and a 30 year married pair from Manchester. On previous sojourns I've made friends from Germany, the States, and good old Glasgow. There's a great age range, and the bar staff are really friendly and knowledgable. read more

The Pot Still is a good old fashioned pub, has a huge range of whisky and a nice relaxed atmosphere, the staff are friendly and welcoming and if you are peckish the do a damn good pork pie too! For those that like The Pot Still, I can also recommend The Briton's Protection in Manchester. Having taken my brother there earlier in the year, he returned the favour by introducing me to the excellent Pot Still. It is a lovely traditional pub with hundreds of whiskies to tempt you & extremely knowledgeable bar staff / friendly customers to help you choose. Having described the sort of whiskies I normally enjoy, I left the selection, with one exception, to the staff. Only there for a short visit, we ended up sampling; Dalmore 16 yr Kilchoman Yamazaki 10 yr Strathisla 12 yr BenRiach 12 yr Arumaticus Fumosus Scapa 12 yr With the latter 2 being my personal favourites. Overall it was an excellent experience and I'm looking forward to returning. read more

I've been back in here a few times; sometimes on my own and sometimes with other people. It doesn't matter, it's always been a good time in here. It's never top of my list for must head places, but if I end up walking by, I invariably drop in. I was in with a friend who is more of a whisky drinker than me and he was having a rare old time comparing recommendations and sampling new drams. That's one thing where the Pot Still excels - they'll offer a small taste of anything you're not sure of. The range is impeccable, and the mountain climbing skills of the staff remains top notch as well - ask for something off the top shelf and watch them go! - and to be honest, it well deserves the fifth star. It is small, so if you get in and manage to snag a table, stay all night - but drink responsibly. Wow, its been about three years since I wrote my review of the Pot Still, so a wee update is on the cards. A few things have changed about town and I feel like other pubs have caught up big time with their excellent range of beers and ales. Sadly, The Pot Still is lagging behind a little, with it limited range of draught ales (just two pumps I think?) Nonetheless, its still a charming pub, with knowledgeable staff and the most outstanding whisky selection I've ever seen. Great for a wee pit stop if shopping in the city centre or a fanatic pie and beans pick me up! read more

The greatest shrine to whisky I have ever seen. I was in Glasgow overnight while waiting to return to the U.S. After reading some Yelp reviews I knew I had to see it for myself. I talked with Frank Murphy, who I am sure has forgotten more about Scottish whiskies than I have learned in the last 20 years of drinking them. I told him what my favorite whisky was (Abelour A'Bundah), and he gave me a 5 minute lesson on 5 whiskies I might like, explaining the pros of each and ranking them in intensity. The best part was seeing how much he enjoyed doing this, connecting with a fellow fan and passing on his knowledge. He also listed prices before asking what my choice was. I wound up picking his "most intense" choice, and when he saw how much I enjoyed the first sip, he clearly was happy that I was happy. If you are in Glasgow and love whisky, you need to come here. read more

Wall of whisky, well priced cheeseboard, odd tunes sometimes but made up for by being lovely atmospheric place in a bit of town which has too many terrible identikit bars. Knowledgeable staff who aren't judgemental toward whisky novices too, it would seem. Always a bonus. read more
