I was out with a friend and our aim was to have a drink in as many bars as we can, it's not often we do this, but it's a good way of trying different bars that sometimes you would never try or go for. We came on the Sunday where a band was playing we only got to listen to less than an hour of them playing, they where good but a little too loud. Good selection of beers, but not that much selection of whisky. There is food served here, but it's something that I've yet to try.

Located in the Merchant City, Blackfriars is known throughout the city for its great atmosphere and good beer. They have an ever changing selection of cask beer and great bottle selection. I would love to see a few kegged craft beers become available to showcase some of the other great offerings beer has to make. My biggest let down is that they are always mobbed and it is nearly impossible to get a seat or a table in an evening. They host a variety of events from live music to dj's and meet the brewer sessions in the basement area. They serve food however I am yet to try it.

After an awesome afternoon sitting about drinking beers in the beer garden at West (Austen M's dog walking event), David A, Martin R and mysef had the munchies. Wandering through Merchant City we stumbled into Blackfriars. I've been here quite a few times but had never had food. It was crazy, mental busy - but we managed to get a table. Fish and chips and steak pie were ordered and very quickly landed on our table. The fish was beer battered and really tasty. Inexpensive too. They also had a good selection of beers on tap. Just what we were after :) I'll be back for more. Soon.

Blackfriars is definitely worth a look as it provides sanctuary for those of us in the Merchant City who don't want to go to Tiger Tiger because its too expensive, O'Neill's because its too Irish or the Steps because its too much of an old man pub. I've usually ended up in Blackfriars on my way to gigs at the Barrowlands, getting a drink as close to the Barras as I can without going too far into the dodgy area beyond Glasgow Cross. Although I've found the Merchant City can be a dodgy area, the area around Blackfriars is pretty quiet and there is certainly no threatening atmosphere in this pub. The clientele is very mixed and during the evening it can be a very warm and atmospheric place with it being busy and a bit of music on in the background. There are quite a few unusual guest ales here, though at the same time there isn't much of the common pints of beer to choose from. The prices are okay though. My only real complaint in here is that the mens' toilets are far too small and in quite poor condition.

This review is for the food we had, not the delicious drinks or the amazing atmosphere I've come to love from previous visits here. My boyfriend and I after having met his sister in town for a coffee meetup and a stroll through princess square, decided that it was a bit too late to worry about what to go home and cook, so we decided to head to Merchant Square for a bite to eat. Having been to Blackfriars many times before and it being one of our favourite haunts, we decided to stop in for a bite to eat. Everytime we've been in before, the food being served has looked super yummy, and my boyfriend has eaten here before, so why not? The place was absolutely dead (not shocking for a wednesday afternoon) which was a first for us. This place is usually so packed, it's surprising to find a poll to lean up against. Anyway, we sat down quick, looked over the menu (which my boyfriend mentioned had changed since he last ate here) and both ordered the fish and chips. The description promised it was the healthier option, because it came with a nice salad and a few chips. As my picture shows, it looked quite nice indeed. Unfortunately, the fish was a bit too greasy for my taste, although, to be fair, it is deep fried fish. The chips were too under cooked for my liking and were more like chopped potatoes and could have used some gravy with them. I absolutely love salad and peas, so both of those went down a treat. My boyfriend ended up finishing my chips and a bit of my fish, when I decided I'd had enough. I'm not saying I won't eat here again, and I'm surely not saying I won't booze here again, but I'll probably go for something different next time. The staff, as always are lovely and hip and make us feel welcomed every time we're there. We'll be back.

ales and spirits at Blackfriars

Blackfriars is a proper pub. With a great range of ales, spirits, wines, and with food that isn't pretending to be upmarket to suit the area, it's the kind of pub the big chains try and fail to replicate. With a single, lonely telly hanging up near the bar (it's rarely on), this isn't the pub for Sky Sports and the jeering football mobs. It's where you go when you want a quality pint of ale that's kept well and served by friendly staff that look like they take pride in their place of work. And rightly so - the bar is well run, and the regular music and stand-up events make it the kind of pub you can keep going back to even when you're in the mood for different kinds of evening. The only downside are the tiny, cramped toilets off to the side of the bar. I've been in a pub in London (The Captain's Cabin, near Picadilly) that has smaller toilets... but that's the only one! If you're at all a fan of ale, live entertainment, or both, then Blackfriars is well worth a visit.

I like this place. It's a good lazy afternoon pint on a day off sort of place for me and the sort of place I can happily kill time on my own waiting for someone if I am early or more commonly, when my friends are running late. The staff are nice enough and the bar is impressive, with a good range of ales and spirits. Havent sampled this place in a 'night-out' capacity, but I hear only good things.

It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

Well, they did give us a splendiferous spread with copious plates of delicious food to try. In January they had a Winter Sale on with some meals available at £4 and £5 so decided to take advantage of this with my bestie and fellow Yelper Angela B. As a result I ended up with a taste tantalising wee mac and cheese topped with bacon bits including a wee bucket of chips. Not bad for a fiver. Boom! I've also frequented for drinks and they have an excellent bar selection, there's even some cheeky fruit beers in there. Yay! I would highly recommend popping in for a wee swally or a sit down meal within the designated dinning area. It's pretty, it's relaxing and the music is pretty good with some 90's indie beats to tickle your ear drums. Other music probably plays at other times. It's also bang smack right in the middle of town so super handy but ladies beware of the icy blast of the hand-drier in the toilets. Ice burns beware! Please note, not in the Urban Dictionary sense. I opted for the taster plank - 1 third of a pint of three different ales, served in a plank with the beer names written on. That in itself is a great touch, a few places don't identify which beer is which. I had a Casear Augustus from Williams Brothers, a Fake Lager from Brewdog and a Witless IV from Red Willow Brewery - as you can see, there's a great range to choose from and the staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about them all. While I was looking around and supping my drinks (the Witless was the pick of the bunch, fact fans!) I noticed the menu. I knew that The Raven were offering food, but wasn't too sure what. Looking at the menu, it looked pretty nifty so I figured I'd just eat here, and I was glad I did! The food is BBQ based - low and slow smoked pork, burgers, ribs, that sort of thing. There's been an explosion of this kind of food in Glasgow recently, I perhaps lay the blame at the feet of Adam Richman and Man vs. Food (my dream job too, it has to be said) but I'm not complaining! I opted for a pulled pork burrito with a side of spicy cheesy fries, and at £9 for the two, it was a steal. They arrived quickly, the fries in a basket and the burrito served on a platter. I was given cutlery before the food arrived, and what looked like a carrying case full of sauces, salt, pepper, kitchen roll and a great sight, a wet wipe! A great thing to have when eating what is esssentially finger food! There wasn't a long wait at all for the food; The burrito was lovely, really filled to the brim and fresh - but the spicy cheesy fries were stunning. Covered in jalapenos, cheese and a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, they were quickly devoured. I could honestly have had a second helping of those on their own. A great first impression here, not just for the great food, but for the really helpful and friendly staff, and the attention to detail that the whole place shows. It's somewhere that I can see me returning to time and time again.

It's strong ...I can only imagine what having straight buckfast would be like ..I'm glad my first time was in shake form as I'm sure the cream and milk toned down the alcohol and sharpness a lot . The overall flavor really grows on you . It reminds me of like a Neapolitan shake ( heavy on the chocolate and strawberry and no vanilla ice cream ) with a crap ton of added fermented strawberries and maraschino cherries and maraschino cherry syrup . If I was the chef I'd tweak this by adding a rum flambé banana slice or just banana in general would be so nice .
