It was recommended to us by 2 different Scots (Our tour guide in Skye and our hotelier in Glasgow), so it has quite a lot of credential from all over. We stopped in for our nightly-during-vacation dram on our first of 2 nights in Glasgow. The place was packed...You order at the bar and try to find somewhere to sit when they serve you. (We found a spot upstairs. Our bartender was quite knowledgeable in the extensive collection and guided us to a good choice. (Our main direction in every bar was to give us something we'd have a hard time finding back in the States.) That got us to a Duich Moss dram...heavily peated (just the way I like it) from Islay...a great choice for one of our last whiskeys in Scotland. If you like Scotch Whiskey, you can certainly get it any and everywhere in Scotland...but this place is a true Scotch lovers' destination...the selection is unrivaled, and you'll find yourself in a great, historic atmosphere to enjoy it. Fantastic local cask ales on draught and a very good whisky collection. The owner is a true publican, friendly, professional, and conscious of ensuring his guests enjoy their stay. We ate and we ate and we drank and we drank and then we stayed for hours listening to a group of locals jamming on traditional Scottish instruments. If I hadn't been there in person, I would have thought this was a movie version of a small local pub. We had many, many delicious meals on the Isle of Skye, in the Highlands, and in Edinburgh, but this evening, in tiny little Kippen, was our favorite night of our entire Scottish vacation. We stayed in one of the rooms upstairs which was simple but quaint, and again felt exactly as a room above a small pub in a small Scottish town should. Breakfast the next morning was delicious including fresh yogurt and jams, muesli, and a hot cooked Scottish breakfast. This really is everything a pub should be. The real shame is that there is only a cursory attempt at a beer garden, it was a nice day but all they have is a handful of picnic benches at the edge of the overly-large car park round the back. It's nice inside though, plenty of old fixtures and fittings, although we were put in a small dining-room that had the least character of all the rooms we saw. It was quiet, only two more tables were occupied inside, and service was friendly and efficient. We both ordered exactly the same things, haggis bon bons to start and venison for the main. The bon bons were lovely and light, so presumably not just haggis, if there were only a couple more said the greedy me, but they had a great flavour and the whisky mustard cream sauce was about as good a "british" sauce as I can remember having. It packed a ton of flavour. The venison came served on mash and a gravy, and with a side of buttered veg. Again everything combined beautifully. The mash was creamy, the sauce flavourful and the venison was cooked perfectly medium-rare, it was soft and delicious. The veg was al dente as most cheffie veg is these days, presumably to keep the goodness in. There was almost nothing not to like as far as I was concerned.

I was unsure of the pork combo but everything was perfectly cooked & the flavours were an great combo I would definitely order again as it just melted in the mouth. We had a few fried dishes like the chicken wings, fish & chips also sweet potato fries but for they all seemed to have a sweet taste to them I think something sweet had been fried in the oil. The waiting staff were pleasant & helpful but need to be a little more attentive as we were left without cutlery & had trouble ordering more drinks with our mains. I'm sure this will all come with experience & these are just a couple of teething problem for their first week. I'm looking forward trying more of the menu.

What made it even more disappointing was the rather grand announcement on the menu: "Gilmour's Roast Sirloin of Beef served every Sunday Lunch from 12-4pm, while stocks last." The wording made it sound as though people were practically queuing around the block to get their hands on this legendary Sunday roast before it sold out. Having now sampled it, I suspect they'll have enough beef left over to see them through to next Sunday. What arrived was two rather sad slices of very dry beef. I was expecting a generous portion of beautifully roasted, succulent beef--tender, juicy, and practically falling apart at the mere sight of a fork. Instead, I was presented with something that appeared to have spent rather too long contemplating its existence in the oven. A bit of gravy might have helped, but I suspect even a full-scale rescue operation would have struggled to bring this beef back to life. Now, the sticky toffee pudding was an entirely different story! Absolutely delightful. Warm, moist, and delicious, with a generous helping of rich toffee sauce and a small dollop of ice cream. Proper British comfort food at its finest! If the Sunday roast was the disappointment of the afternoon, the sticky toffee pudding was the hero that swooped in to save the day. I would happily return for that alone. The service was lovely, with friendly and welcoming staff, and the restaurant itself is in a fantastic location with a wonderful atmosphere. It's a great spot to sit down and enjoy a meal. Unfortunately, when you advertise a Sunday roast as though it's the hottest ticket in town, you really ought to deliver something worth writing home about. In short: Come for the atmosphere, stay for the sticky toffee pudding, but perhaps give the Sunday roast a miss.

Friendly but fairly aloof in terms of service, the young waitress spending much of this slow service flirting with a bartender, Stravaigin's menu offers a good bit of customization whether one opts to partake a just a Burger, in courses or using small-plates as a sort of Tapas. Not neglecting Whisky across a Cocktail list, Elevenses a smoky Citrus masterpiece, the "wee" portion of Haggis is perfect for one with four-bites of liberally spiced Offal alongside equal size quenelles of Potatoes and Rutabaga. Spanning south for fried Bitterballen, straight out of Germany with smoked Ham, Fish Fritters get a bit muddled by the aggressive heat and creamy dressing while Carrots are unevenly cooked but pleasant in a mix of Nuts, Beets and unnecessary Tofu. Uncertain why any menu would offer both Flan and Creme Caramel for Dessert, though locals seem to prefer Cheese regardless, an Italian riff in the former was small and smooth but frankly unmemorable in either a negative or positive way.

The food…read morewas tasty and well worth the money it was grand to be able to sit and have a cooked breakfast instead of the ones I do at home as my cooked breakfast comes out as a burnt offering. I would love to try out their other meals but saying that they do have one of my favourite beers in the pub so that's an excuse to visit.
