Beautiful from the ambience to the impeccable service to the meal. Had to try this fantastic restaurant after recommendation from a friend and so glad we did. Extremely friendly and attentive staff giving a true Italian feel. Do try this hidden gem. It might not look much from the outside but by god it would give any Italian in Glasgow a run for it's money. Just before we left a customer came in for a coffee and the owner rhymed off his order without him even having to open his mouth. That's true service. I am sure to be back. Highly recommended.

In my opinion this is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in Glasgow. It is located a little outside of the centre in the south side of the city (which is very handy for me) but is definitely worth going that extra distance to try. I visited on a Friday lunchtime and managed to get a table no problem but it is advisable to book for the weekend as there are only about 8 or 9 tables. They have a set lunch menu, priced at £7.95 for 2 courses. This is amazing value given the standard of the food and the portion sizes we received were very substantial. To start I went for the mussels in tomato and basil sauce, served with fresh toasted bread. The mussels were some of the biggest I have ever eaten and were cooked perfectly. The bread was incredibly fresh and perfect for soaking up the leftover sauce. This was followed by pesto pasta - easily the best I have ever tried. The only problem was it was quite rich so I couldn't finish the entire portion. At just over £20 for two set lunches and two coffees it really is amazing value.

I visited this restaurant to celebrate my birthday back in June. My partner and I decided to go for Italian cuisine and chose this particular restaurant as it was heavily featured online with glowing reviews. My partner had told the restaurant it was my birthday, on arrival I was greeted by a single red rose waiting on the table for me, which was a nice surprise. We dined on the pre-theatre menu which was £13.95 for 2 courses or a £15.95 for 3. We decided to have a starter and a main, I'm more of a savoury than sweet kinda girl. I got the bruschetta to start with. The portion sizes were humongous, I was expecting one piece but was served two large slices smothered with delicious sweet tomatoes, cheese and a balsamic dressing. It had been an awfully long time since I'd had bruschetta, and this bruschetta was well worth the wait. My partner got the prawn cocktail. We all know prawn cocktails aren't the most adventurous of options, but as far as prawn cocktails go... this was a pretty good one. For a main course I had tagliatelle with pesto and goats cheese - aghhhh it was amazing! I had never had this combination before (trust me I have had it since) and it was a stunning flavour combination. Goats cheese has fast become one of my favourite things and if you have the luck of trying this dish you'll soon realise why. The creamy taste and texture of the goats cheese paired with the nutty, herby flavour of the pesto has to be a match made in heaven. My better half had penne pasta with spicy italian sausage and a tomato and vodka sauce. Yes you heard right VODKA sauce. It sounds a tad peculiar but it worked! The dish was flavourful and the ingredients tasted lovely and fresh, the vodka added a little kick and an extra dimension to the dish. We ordered cappuccinos to finish, we all know nothing beats 'proper' Italian coffee. When the coffee arrived I had the wonderful surprise of being given a free piece of the most amazing tiramisu to wish me a happy birthday. It also came with the embarrassment of a song and a singing candle sat in the cake. I had absolutely no room in my now bursting tummy, but managed to squeeze it in... just! It was too good to leave! The restaurant is very dinky but it has that nice homely feel about it. You honestly feel like you've just walked in to an authentic Italian restaurant slap bang in the middle of Rome. The service here is fantastic and the food even better. This place comes highly recommended from me.

I had been wanting to try this place for well over a year after hearing rave reviews on Yelp and other review sites. Unfortunately we only managed to organise a visit after their move to a new, stark and quite noisy premises. The food was nice but I felt slightly overly salty. The mozzarella in the tricolour starter was tasteless. The Italian sausage penne pasta was really nice but the presentation was not what I was expecting from a place with such consistently high reviews. The fact we had no alcohol, the bill came to just under £50 which I don't think represented good value for money for the quality of food. We had to ask for some bread with our meal when others appeared to be served it immediately and with nicer bread too. The new restaurant I mentioned was quite stark and not particularly cozy or welcoming which I believe was part of the draw for the original location. The lighting was too bright and tables felt like they had been lifted from a chain restaurant rather than an independent family place. With such great Italian restaurants in Glasgow (La Lanterna and Celino's spring immediately to mind) I won't be rushing back here sadly.

Woah. I thought I'd had some good Italian meals in Glasgow but this one really takes the cake. Sapori looks pretty unassuming from the outside and I've had this place bookmarked since Donald M reviewed it nearly 2 years ago. I'd tried to make bookings here a couple of times in the past, but could never get a table until last night when the stars aligned and we got a table for 2 at 7.45pm. As others have said, his place is small inside. It has 8 tables (set up as different combinations of 2 and 4 while we were there) and it's busy, bustling and vibrant. We took our seats and looked over the menu. First up, prices are really reasonable for an Italian restaurant and not much is over £15, even the meat and fish dishes. I went for bruschetta to start and beef cannelloni for main while Graeme had calamari and then a mushroom tagliatelle for main (and we got a side of aubergine to share). The bruschetta sounds like it's going to be pretty standard - toasted garlic bread with cherry tomatoes, basil, extra virgin olive oil and cheese. When it arrived there was two beautiful slices with bright, vibrant tomato on top. I knew I was in for a treat. To call this bruschetta is almost an injustice as it was unlike any I'd had before - a perfect balance of flavours, delicious sweet tomato and basil. It also had a drizzle of balsamic over it - it was totally lush! I also shared some of Graeme's calamari which was less salty than I've tried elsewhere but it meant the flavour of the squid really came through with a squeeze of lemon. Simple, but super delicious. By this stage we were very excited for mains and they didn't disappoint. My beef cannelloni was piping hot and served with a piece of bread. Again, the menu description is pretty standard and didn't express just how delicious this was going to be. The beef was minced really finely which made it a really soft and delicate dish to eat and was packed with flavour. I also tried Graeme's tagliatelle which was so moreish I could have easily eaten that too (to be honest, I feel like everything on the menu would be amazing). The side of seasoned aubergine was lovely and I really liked the pieces which were really well-grilled (strangely this was served cold which I didn't expect, but it was still tasty). We decided not to have dessert even though there was a really nice selection. I can't wait to go back here for another meal as it's one of the best Italian meals I can remember having. Our bill came to £55 for a two course meal for two (with an extra side), two pints of Peroni and a ginger beer for me. They apparently have really reasonable lunch/pre-theatre deals so we'll head back to try those soon.

This has became my favourite italian restaurant in Glasgow - i went yesterday with some friends and the meal was absolutely delicious. If you want to experience some genuine Italian food that is the place for you! The restaurant is very small so i would recomment you to book to be sure they got place, especially during the weekend. The menu offers a great choice and it is not ordinary and it offers some really interesting plates which you hardly find here in glasgow elsewhere! Boards/platters to share are amazing as antipasti, both cured meat and fish! As main course i had sword fish steak (delicious) and as dessert white chocolate profiteroles, best i ever had in my life! To conclude the dinner an espresso and a limoncello - it seemed like i was in Italy again!!!

The menu in the main restaurant changes regularlty but usually has quite a strong seafood theme. On our recent visit the food was quite simply from the very top drawer. Huge tasty scallops, a delicious salmon steak, but best of all was the halibut, which I'd never tried before but can be best described as a really meaty fish, and superlatives can't really describe how good it tasted. It was topped with these caramelised shredded onions that had it not been for my low embarrasment / awkwardness threshold, I'd have asked the chef how to make at home. From the rest of my review you can probably tell what I'll say about the iced coconut and bitter chocolate dessert, and even though the restaurant is undoubtedly quite expensive at about £18 a main course, I'd still say it's definite value for money, and a lot cheaper if you go earlier for the pre-theatre. As well as the main restaurant there's also a new wine bar which offers a slightly less fancy menu, and does lunch and breakfast as well. Although it's nice to sit in (I've only had drinks but have little doubt the food will be excellent), I'm slightly worried they've over-extended themselves by opening up this area. It's in a huge, brand new extension, and has effecxtively tripled the size of the place. For a restaurant that was doing well as it was, I'm not really sure why this was needed, especially as it's location in a quiet suburban part of the city means you have to really be making a conscious effort to come here rather than simply be "passing trade". Anyway, it's one of the best places I've ever eaten anywhere never mind Glasgow, and is a couple of doors down from Cathcart Station. There's no excuse not to try it.

Oh dear. I feel like a nagging granny filled with complaints compared to the other two reviews…read more But...here goes. I have dined in here a few times: once in the main restaurant section and two or three times in the wine bar section which has a more basic (e.g. bog standard) menu. My first experience of Barbarossa in the main restaurant was fantastic, if a bit pricey. Admittedly, the I am not used to forking out quite so much for a nice meal out. But, it really was worth it! I had an amazing prawn starter (and trust me, I've eaten prawns in many a restaurant). The prawns were cooked just right - not rubbery at all - and in a lively subtle but tasty sauce which didn't over power them nor leave them bland. For a meal, I had steak with perfectly cooked vegetables on the side. Absolutely delicious. Meanwhile, my companion had a lamb chop with veg which I was lucky even to taste. Hence, why if I was going back I'd be very tempted to opt for the lamb. However, the other occasions I have eaten here have not been so great. The wine bar section offers a decent selection on the menu (though it is mostly pasta, risotto and the basic run-of-the-mill Italian stuff) for a much more reasonable price. This should make it ideal for a relaxed and decent budget lunch towards the end of the month or when you're saving up for that holiday. Instead, you end up paying around £8-10 for a dish of poorly cooked pasta (soggy, anyone?), in a rather bland sauce. This gives the strong impression that the ingredients are not the freshest or the highest in quality. Meanwhile, for the bistro type experience, you are paying around £14 for a bottle of wine. Hence, it's still a bit too pricey but in this section the food is definitely not worth it. Furthermore, the staff seem to make a very clear distinction between diners in the restaurant and bar sections. Having dined in both, I was shocked and rather annoyed by the customer service the staff executed in the bar and, indeed, the manner in which they did. So, to conclude, if you are after a pricey but amazing meal then the restaurant area in this venue is probably the best around locally. However, if you are looking to spend a little less and still receive a good quality of cooking then give the wine bar/bistro section a miss. Instead, a preferable less pricey and good quality alternative would be The Battlefield Rest about a ten minute walk away.

Again, on our pizza spree, Gian and I went over because we just want to eat all the pizza that exists in Glasgow haha. The restaurant is small, but kind of cozy. There were only like 2 people working at the time we were there, the waiter and the chef. Service was still on point though! Super welcoming waiter and quick service. So I ordered the Napoli pizza which has anchovies and capers on it, and Gian ordered the Al Forno pizza which has sundried tomatoes, ricotta cheese, rocket, toasted pine nuts and olive oil; both pizzas with mozzarella and sugo of course. I loved my pizza! But then again, I love Napoli pizza. The saltiness is too good!! But they made it well. Crunchy crust and evenly cooked dough yum. Gian says they use an electric oven so it's very difficult to mess up pizza with that haha. Oh he also really liked his. He had like zero expectations but was pleasantly surprised! For dessert, we had tiramisu which was really really good. Home made by the peeps at Al Forno! Nice balance of coffee, booze and sweetness. It was light too! Some tiramisu have a very heavy body with too much cream, I'm not a big fan of that, but this one was yum and I'd eat another gallon of it without a problem. Over all about 10-12quid per person with the dessert? Not bad at all! I was full after that delicious meal. Verdict : Pleasant surprise and would def go again, seeing as it's only 10 mins walk away from my place haha. Affordable and great service. We do tend to stick to our favourite dishes but we've never had a bad experience with the food from here. The only reason it's not getting 4 stars is because since they moved to the bigger shop on Kilmarnock Road, the home delivery service has been pretty ropey. It is just round the corner but y'know, sometimes you don't want to go out for food and we do get home delivery quite a lot. After having phoned in orders many times, they got a new phone system that didn't recognise my home number (I'm ex-directory but I don't think that should cause a problem these days?) and therefore they were unable to take our order over the phone. When we went round and the guy realised it was us, he was really apologetic but I haven't tried to order by phone since. We order online now but we do still get some problems. One time we had the delivery driver on the phone claiming he was buzzing our buzzer when he wasn't - I even walked down three flights to the close door to check because he was adamant he was at the right address and actually arguing with me on the phone about where I lived. I'd say their delivery service is a bit hit or miss, but if you can call in yourself then it's one of the better takeaways in Shawlands.
