We were meeting friends here for a meal and so, never having been before, we arrived early to have a drink at the bar which (being a Friday night) was reasonably busy and there were only a few seats available - a good sign! We were offered waiter service but as we had ordered at the bar on our way in we took a seat and settled in for an enjoyable evening. The drinks (a pint of draught Peroni & a Margarita) were typically priced for a city centre location; however, the margarita measure was a tad short which was possibly done deliberately so that it was not spilt in transit! However, as it was mid April and still 'fresh' outside, the fact that the windows are only single glazed in the bar area soon made us feel a bit cold as there was a down draught adjacent to the window.
The décor is modern/contemporary but there was too much going on visually for my taste, I counted four/five different chair and table combinations which made the place look more like a budget hotel lobby/bar rather than a cool, city centre 'must be' sort of place.
Once the rest of the group arrived we moved to the restaurant and were placed at a corner location. I was going to say window seat but as the external wall of the restaurant is glazed floor to ceiling then they are all window seats on the extremity! Fortunately, the owners have not scrimped on the double glazing here and so it was a pleasant spot for our meal, although the guys facing the window spent much of the time watching the Glasgow night life developing outside!
The menu is good, with a wide range of typical Italian food on offer (check out their web site at www.mediterraneoristoranteglasgow.com/menu), our order included scallops, pate, focaccia al pomodoro, king prawns, pizza, penne all' arrabbiata to mention a few items and everyone enjoyed what they had, although my pizza diavola could have been much more spicy.
We plumped for the house wines (red and white) which were very acceptable and the meal was rounded off with a couple of malts. The staff were pleasant and helpful, although the service was slow (a typical Friday night problem perhaps).
The web site boasts that "Mediterraneo is proud to present the largest state-of-the-art open kitchen with pizza oven, in any stand alone restaurant in Scotland", however, I have to say that I was unaware of it as it is not really part of the restaurant, being located between the eating area and the bar.
All in all a pleasant night out, however, I was left with the feeling that there was nothing 'special' about the place, nothing that vaults it into a 'must go' sort of place and it will be a while before I am likely to return as there are so many other restaurants (many better) to go to.
My abiding memory is of modern, not quite minimalist surroundings that resemble budget hotels, but the food is good and the place is worth a visit. read more
