This was my first time in Piccolo Mondo and to be honest I had never heard of it before or even noticed it. Tucked away up the, shall we say, dodgier end of Argyle Street on the corner of said street and West Campbell St is Piccolo Mondo. I had read a few other reviews of the place which is what made me choose this restaurant out of all the other squillions of Italian restaurants in Glasgow. Many customers have praised this place and it has even been voted the 'second best restaurant in the UK' by them there TopTable people. Wow.
What I first noticed about Piccolo Mondo is the style and decor compared to other, maybe newer, Italian restaurants. There's no sleek minimalism or Ikea chic here, nope, it's full on opulent and old school-esque all the way. Which, in my (sadly myopic) eyes makes a nice and refreshing change to all the other Italian restaurants that are springing up here there and everywhere. The toilets (once you've found them) are, I'm very happy to say, also top notch. Nicely kept with lovely hand cream and proper hand towels should you so wish to mop your delicate handies with one.
We went for a rather modest (yet rather hilariously named) Sensational Novelty Menu ~ just for that menu name alone full marks! This was £20 for 2 people including an aperitif, starter and main course or main course and dessert and then a coffee or liqueur. No' bad indeed. For our aperitifs I chose a yummy Kir Royale and the boy had a glass of Prosecco. We opted for the starter and main course option; me being a salty dawg and all (Woof!) I had a delicious Antipasti del Casale which was a splendid salad/plate of parma ham, salami, parmesan, rocket, mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar. This was right up my street. Delicious and just the right amount. The boy had a Trio of Mushrooms, Mozzarella & Onions Rings which is exactly just that. Lovely. Another plus for us was the basket of focaccia and butter they also gave us (for free). I liked that very much as not many places these days seem to do that any more. Nice touch.
Main course was for myself the Pasta Princepessa ~ a pasta dish comprising of chicken breast (lovely big chunks), parma ham, white wine & other nice things. It was really good if a tad too creamy for me (my own fault - I'm not too keen on creamy pasta sauces). The boy one had Chicken Breast Capri ~ a chicken breast with tomato, garlic, chilli, basil & white wine sauce served with saffron rice, roast potatoes and veggies. This was delicious and when I go again (and I will) I will definately have that. Yummy. Good size portions too. None of your nouvelle cuisine (i.e. stingy) here. This is good proper Italian food like Mama used to make ( if my Mama came from Tuscany and not Norfolk that is).
Glad we didn't opt for the 3 courses as we were both pretty darn full after all that lovely food. We still had the coffee/liqueur as included in the menu to have after so I chose a cappuccino. This just hit the right spot after the meal. Ahhhh.
I shall fo' sure be back to Piccolo Mondo at some point and when I do go I look forward to trying some of the other menus and courses as they do seem to have a very varied selection of menus to suit any budget or occasion, which is again a super idea. Top tip is to look online for great deals. Yas.
Should you ever find yourself in the wrong part of town (or Argyle Street to be precise) then do please take a chance on a warm Italian restaurant with a funny wee name. read more
