Smoke Stack is an American style chargrill restaurant situated in Broughton Street. It specialises in meat (steaks in particular) so if you're dining with a rampant carnivore, there will definitely be lots on the menu to please them. The menu features four different cuts of steak and six different sauces to compliment them. Portions are pretty large and if you go for a weekend brunch, your meal will set you up for the day. In particular the all day breakfast is brilliant, you get massive portions of beans, Crombie's sausages, bacon and eggs served alongside slabs of tasty bread (there's no cheap white sliced here), all for a meagre £6.95. The menu generally represents good value for money, the pre-theatre menu served between 5-6.30pm is only £9.95 for two courses. The decor could probably do with a bit of an update, what was once 'modern' is now looking a bit nineties. However the staff are friendly and the service is really good, you'll leave with a full tum and a smile on your face.

Do you like eating lots of meat? Is it really only quantity that you're wanting? Well, I think I've found the place for you. It's got all the bland aspects of the restaurant scene down, uncomfortable cheap furniture. Uninterested staff loiter and especially on quiet days, really hate you being there. The menu is good in the respect that you can choice how your meat is cooked and what you have with it but this by no means "tailor made". It's overpriced for what it is, somewhere to take your parents if they were in town or an old work mate that you're not fussed about impressing. It's an in and out affair with no atmosphere but it does fill a hole.

The smoke stack is definitely the place to go for 'classy' wholesome comfort food. The menu is varied and has something for everyone. I love the fillet steak as they do a selection of sauces and great chips. You can opt for a baked or sauté potatoes too. Their flaming fajitas are fantastic and they also do great salads and a nice wine list. The decor is cosy and inviting. When it's busy the volume level is quite a lot to deal with but if you like a buzzing environment then this is the place for you. Service has always been attentive and friendly.

Checked out the 2 course lunch for £7 quid which I thought was reasonable, especially for this street. I started with the Soup of the Day, which should be the Soup Of Every Day because it never changes, but hey, it was nice. I was so curious to see what a chicken and bacon crepe looked like so I ordered. My imagination couldn't prepare me for what was put on my plate. It's exactly as strange as it sounds and if you insist on ordering, remove the Crepe ASAP, otherwise it will absorb the bacon grease. Strange, but tasty. Not a bad at all.

Steak isn't my favourite food, in fact I have never once ordered it in a restaurant because it just doesn't appeal to me, but I decided to throw caution to the wind and actually try some in here, which, if you knew me, would really surprise you! The whole concept of Smoke Stack is a good one. I love the exterior, it's very American-esque and the interior matches up nicely. We went for a lunchtime meal, one that would probably double up as dinner too, so we decided to go all out and have the 8oz Scottish Sirloin, which was part of an £8 lunchtime meal deal. My steak came, medium well as I'd asked for it, with garlic butter and thick cut chips. Taking my first meaty mouthful, I have to be honest and say it was beautifully cooked, I couldn't really fault it in any way, except from the fact that I really don't like steak that much! It's just too much meat for me, way , way too much, and I struggled to finish the lot. My boyfriend had no problem helping me out though. Overall, the Smoke Stack is great for those of you who love a big fat hunk of cow on your plate, but next time, I'll be trying the prawns I think.

Green machine with broccoli, spinach, celery, banana & pineapple!

There is an outdoor space that sits on the West Bow bend of Grassmarket, but nothing was set up for that when we were there for a late lunch. Perhaps it's a seasonal thing. All first impressions aside, it turned out to be a very good lunch. We were greeted immediately upon entering. We were fortunate to get a table without a reservation. You will definitely need one here during peak times. The service was warm & friendly. Artur was very helpful in answering all of our questions. The lunch menu is limited, but you can also order from the higher priced dinner menu as well. I was mostly amazed by the fact that you get complimentary oysters delivered to your table. My husband is not a seafood fan, so I was fortunate enough to enjoy both of them. These are large & tasty Pacific oysters grown at a farm in Loch Fyne. Delicious! It was such a great starter. I couldn't pass up the half kilo pot (lunch portion) of steamed mussels. These are Scottish rope-grown mussels. I should have ordered a kilo. They were so addicting. The white wine sauce with shallots was perfect. However, I did have a difficult time deciding which sauce to choose. The whisky with smoked bacon also sounded amazing. If I had to say anything negative, it would be to maybe add more bread to soak up the sauce. I probably could have asked for more, but I didn't. That's on me. I really wanted to return to try the Surf & Turf. We just didn't have enough time to do it all. I would go back in a heartbeat. It ended up being a great find. A great experience!

We tried a variety of dishes including the Scotch egg, chicken, pork, and beef options, and every single one was excellent. The meats were very flavorful and tender, and the mashed potatoes were easily some of the best we've had. The Scotch egg was perfectly cooked with a rich, slightly runny yolk and a crispy, well-seasoned outer layer. The sticky toffee pudding was also outstanding and a perfect way to finish the meal and was shared by the group as the portions were huge!! The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a unique and cozy feel. We waited about 20 minutes in line, but it was worth it. Service was great, everyone was friendly, and the experience felt very well run. This is also a great option for families, especially if you have picky kids. You can't really go wrong with excellent mashed potatoes and high-quality meat options. FYI the Pork Shank was the winner overall.

Sunday Roast: All the standards, but fancy. The really differentiator was the beef, which seem aged and very high quality. Great tender texture and nice gravy to go with it. Though a wee bit small portion of meat. The veggies were cooked very nicely with a lot of freshness and textures, not mushy like some pubs serve. The only weird thing is that the yorkshire pudding seemed to be deep fried. Added an overly crispy texture which as kinda weird; I prefer traditionally baked. Toffee Apple Pudding: More like a bread pudding than a sticky pudding. Filled with great flavor and a few nice baked apples bit on top. Great toffee sauce and ice cream to round it out. Blackberry & Lime Soda: So much better than those highly sugared sodas you get at the store. Definitely tasted the fresh fruit and artisanal methods.
