Thank God for this late night spot. I was so surprised that it was hard to find a late dinner even on the weekends in Edinburgh. The food was delicious, great vegetarian options. Drinks were great too.

Delicious half rack of rib and hot tasty French fries. Their sticky pudding wasn't much to talk about. More like spiced cake with dark syrup on top. Glad there was a good option past 10 pm in Edinburgh

Do you have more money than taste? Want to throw down £8.50 for a single chicken breast and a grilled fucking lemon? Who grills a lemon? Ox184, that's who. For this princely sum they will even have the incredible hulk jizz a mint sauce or something on your meal. This is to ensure mainly that the paper they serve your A-cup chicken on gets soggy and clings to every bite, adding bulk and fibre to what would otherwise be an unsatisfying snack. The fries were good, though, and they have pints.

Holyrood 9A is one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh and so when I heard that the Cowgate was getting a sister bar I had to try it. I can remember the location for the bar being several terrible meat market style pubs and so it was pleasing to see that there had been a mini makeover that had turned the slutty girl from high school into a fairly cool young woman but you could still see the signs of the past misdemeanours. Firstly, they've done what you would expect, a changing supply of quality beers on draught which is going to challenge the nearby Brewdog. Holyrood 9a also has a great reputation for its food and its here that Ox184 loses a mark on its older (and slightly more cooler) brother. I had a snack from the Lights menu which was a Chorizo Flat bread, it came out on nice looking wood plate that dwarfed the food on it - it wasn't even a full flat bread. It was an odd combination of warmed chorizo and not quite cooked cheese, certainly not the quality I usually get from the Holyrood bar. The guys serving were really attentive and pleasant and do make the bar stand out from the nearby opposition of Brewdogs "too cool for skool' atmosphere or the 'can't be bothered to care' staff at Three Sisters so will carve out a little niche for themselves. It's good to see the Cowgate getting another quality bar but it needs a bit of a tweak in the food offering to come up to the class of its older brother down the road.

Big open plan eatery nice layout. Had a pulled pork long boy and my partner had a bbq chicken long boy. Both came quickly on oven trays with chips. All tasted good maybe slightly pricey at almost £12 each. Service was quick but not the most helpful Of staff.

Popped in for dinner & drinks. Poor customer service & a catalogue of errors with our food order meant I left hungry. There was no offer to make things right til we asked to speak to the manager. I like the vibe of this place but I won't be in a hurry to go back.

The venison and black pudding burger with Blue Murder cheese was one of the best burgers that I have ever had. Many local Scottish craft beers. An outstanding bar and restaurant.

I was attracted by the cute shepherd dog brought by other guest inside so I came into OX184. Great (and dog friendly) pub for grilled food.

    WORST COFFEE EVER

We had dinner here one night in November (2018) as a group of 4. The restaurant was very busy but the staff were really helpful and friendly and got a table for us as soon as possible. The food here was great value and super yummy. We all got different dishes for our dinner and everyone was so happy that we decided we would go back there for breakfast the next morning. When we arrived the following morning (hungover heads ready for the best food and service like we received the night before) the place was not busy at all - nothing like the night before, everything was so calmed and relaxed. There was only one (very large group (15+)) table occupied when we first arrived. We ordered quickly and had our coffees served to us quickly enough. We noticed a couple arriving and occupying another table - making it three tables in the whole building occupied so it seemed manageable. To our surprise the coffee was awful. It was so milky I could barely taste the coffee in it as did the other people on my table and we said we would complain it to the waiter when he brings our food - which I have never done before about anything so this was a first for me. So we waited as our coffees were getting cold - 15 minutes passed, no sign of the waiter and only three tables still occupied, 25 minutes passed - no sign of our food and then at about 30 minutes the waiter came down to us and apologised for the delay in our food and offered us another cup of coffee on the house (which we still hadn't complained about the previous one) so we saw this as a great chance of just getting another cup of coffee instead of complaining about the first one. This time I asked if I could have a DOUBLE SHOT in mine as the previous one was so milky tasting. Our food finally arrived along with our coffee. The coffee was still pretty milky with a slight taste of coffee and the dish I had ordered was okay - not great tasting, not bad but was not worth more than a half an hour wait. We all left with a bitter taste in our mouths from our second experience here after having such a pleasant one the night before. I can't say if I would recommend here for breakfast but dinner was great. Never have I ever experienced coffee like this - I don't know if it was the type of coffee beans they used or if it was the person making it but it was definitely the WORST coffee I've ever had.

Anyhow the OH persuaded me to give it a shot for a quick drink to shelter from the rain whilst we deliberated on a venue for dinner. I'm glad he did. In addition to a decent selection of craft beers, there's a hefty cocktail menu. I tried the Ginger Tom Collins & it hit the spot. Just the right amount of ginger to pack a punch but not enough to be overpowering. The OH had a pint of draft beer & seemed happy enough. The low ceiling means it gets noisy even if it's not packed. There was a stag do, 2 birthday parties and hen group as well as some other folks. It was only just possible to hold a convo at normal volume & be heard. There's a decent sized courtyard out the back too but it was too wet & cold to try it out. I'd definitely visit again but maybe on a week night when it might be a little less noisy.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

A quick Google search later, we decided to add this to our "must visit while in Edinburgh" list. This wasn't our anniversary restaurant, of course, but we knew we needed to dine here at least once. It was a long walk from our hotel, but it was a nice way to see parts of the city that we wouldn't normally have gotten to. The restaurant itself is nestled in the basement (or downstairs) of a cute building. It's small in there, but they're very good at maximizing the space they're given. We settled in at a teeny-tiny table off to the side and swiftly ordered a couple of pints. The menu is very straightforward: you're either getting a meat and cheese plate, just a cheese plate, or pates. We decided to share the Mixed Meat & Cheese platter. We figured that we'd snack and drink some Scottish beer, then head off into the night to find our "real" dinner. Thing is, though, that combo platter filled us the heck up. The waitress came out with the meat and cheese plate and a box of bread, oatcakes and crackers, and my husband and I had a "where is all this going?" moment. But our pro-waitress dropped the plate on the table and popped the bread box into a shelf on the wall next to us - a shelf that neither of us ever even noticed, to be honest. The meat and cheese selections were delicious and paired really well together. Kind of hidden away on that shelf (holding the bread and oatcakes) were a couple chutney jars. That chutney - lots of fruit pieces and complex flavors - brought a lot to the cheeses. We really did love the food, the surroundings, the beer and the staff. I wish we had something like this back home.

The service was absolutely welcoming. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and even at 9p, mid week (when you might expect things to be winding down), the place was comfortably busy but not packed, but full enough to feel alive. Besides the fact that both were into motorcycles (and one came to Edinburgh once and immediately backed up his bags and moved over from Italy - props), we found out that they could make a mean cocktail.
