Had no prior reservations and was able to be seated right away, it's a diner style restaurant and the food is really good and inexpensive. I ordered the Shepard's pie with a side of chips (French fries). And it was incredible, I've never had Shepard's pie before but I thought it was delicious. The platter did come with a side of beans and carrots that I didn't really care for. They were lukewarm and a lacked taste. But my main entree and the fries were nice, hot, and delicious. I was so excited to try this place after seeing good reviews but our experience was terrible. There were gnats everywhere that we were killing at our dusty booth. When our food arrived we finally asked to move spots but the back of the restaurant was just as bad. I can't believe other families weren't complaining. We also found a hair in our appetizer and the mains were subpar. My husband complained about his fries and burger and the manager was combative. **RACIST & DISCRIMINATORY** The young blonde hair girl in her maybe late-20s hostess, bartender or server (not sure which) was super rude! We came in excited about this place, and the restaurant had open tables at about 6:50pm on a Friday ... we had just walked all day and were starving with a 2-year old and an elderly after walking all over town and sightseeing all day long. However, was told by this girl that they didn't have a seat for us. Although there was no wait, no one ahead of us and empty tables. I told her she could seat us in that booth, we didn't mind since our 2 year old wouldn't be eating. However, she cut me off and said that would not work. I thought that was weird but that should have been That it would take them about 30 minutes to get us a table. We walk around in the cold, come back to the restaurant ... there are plenty of open tables. My husband takes my 2-year old inside to wait so she is not in the freezing rainy cold (especially since she was sniffling). The hostess then says it's going to take longer and that we must wait outside the restaurant. We tell her it's cold, and we've been waiting. She then says ... "This isn't going to work, I'm not serving you. You guys can leave." She did not want to serve of us this entire time! She could have told us when we first walked in, but made us wait and walk around outside in the cold rain with a 2-year old and an 88-year old ... then decides she doesn't want to serve us. We walked in at 6:50pm, came back at 7:30pm, waited until 7:45pm when she told us she wouldn't serve us. By this time all the other restaurants were fully reserved or with 1-2 hour waits. I don't really have anything nice to say about this place. The only reason it's not getting a 1 star review is that the person helping us in the end was nice and they give you candy with the check. I love black licorice. Walking in, we started to have a seat and the person working yelled at us to go to the back. Ok, if you want us to wait to be seated, just say so, it's pretty easy. There were two large groups behind us and I think he lumped us in with them because when I tried to sit he started freaking out that we were taking a 2 top. The server comes up and asks if we want breakfast or lunch since it's so close to 12 when they stop serving breakfast. We say breakfast and he walks away. He comes back to us around 1155 and is angry we haven't ordered yet, which I can't see how it's my fault since he's taking the orders. Points at the menu and asks if we knew how to read. I'm about the lose it but again, I don't like to embarrass my mans so I tried to stay calm. My meal comes and it's meh. The toast is burnt on one side. The egg has runny whites. The sausage is sickly sweet. The beans taste like they're from a can. The mushrooms are clearly old. The tomatoes are cold. The black pudding and the bacon are ok. My fiancé's pancakes are stodgy and undercooked. I regret 100% eating here. There are details I won't share but a few hours later the porcelain gods got to eat my meal in extreme liquid form. I was sick for at least an hour, on and off the toilet, once almost not making the toilet. My man said he's never seen my face so terrified in the whole time we've known each other. After a chilly morning run in the city, I came by Mums for some heartwarming comfort food and it was just that. Nothing strikes homemade as much as some traditional, hearty British food in a retro-styled diner. I waited about 5 minutes until being seated on a Sunday afternoon. While there were many choices, I opted for the Steak and Ale Pie (£9.75 for regular). The pie was served in a rectangular ceramic bowl filled with tender chunks of beef with carrots, onions, mushrooms & turnip simmered in rich gravy with ale. The fillings were so rich and flavorful that I even threw in my carrots and peas on the side for some extra seasoning. My favorite was the puff pastry top that was so flaky and delicious to dip with. You also get a side of fries, which was honestly a bit disappointing though. With that said, I may switch up the sides for mash instead. The wait for my food did take almost half an hour, which was pretty long. They had also seemed to have forgotten my glass of water, but was super helpful once I reminded them. If you're looking for some good ol' homecooked British food that will warm you up on a cold day, this will do it. A couple of hours after we'd landed at the airport and checked into our rental, we were already hungry. Over 9 or 10 hours of flying, the meager sustenance provided by United Airlines, as delectable as it of course was, just did not satisfy our appetites. A couple hundred yards off the very beaten tourist path over near Edinburgh University, and purporting to serve "Great Comfort Food," Mums sounded perfect for the circumstances. It pretty much got there. Never having set foot in Scotland before, I was determined to try haggis at some point, and here it was. Haggis, neeps, and tatties here (from the "Classic Mains" section of the menu) came in a sizable portion for £10.50. For trying it the first time, I was a bit surprised by the mildness of the pluck--hell, a bit more of that minerally flavor would have been great. Mums' version was a bit nutmeg-heavy, and the plate as a whole could have used a bit more salt. Good satisfying eating, though, and certainly good enough to make me want to try some additional versions down the line. The wife ordered shepherd's pie, and that was delicious: instead of the ground meat and mashed potatoes most U.S. versions have, this one had chunks of lamb and potato (the latter nicely browned from the broiler) and brought tremendous flavor and satisfaction. Compared to some of the more sedate and quaint cafes we'd visit later on our trip, Mums really does feel a bit like a throwback, bustling U.S. diner. Even in the middle of a weekday afternoon, there was the spectacle of a group of four or five very different-looking kids (both guys and girls, all British or European but none Scottish, so far as I could tell from their accents) all wearing kilts. And on a 68 degree sunny day, it was pretty sweltering by the window. The young server was excellent--helpful and friendly. Fine start to a surprisingly good 9 or 10 days of Scottish eating (and, mind you, by "surprisingly" I should add that I was already expecting quite a bit better than the ignorant and outdated U.S. stereotypes of British food in the 21st century). read more

On a cold day in Edinburgh, nothing sounds much better than some warm comfort food. I stopped in around 1:30pm and was immediately greeted and shown to a table. I went with two of the sausage-of-the-day selections (pork and leek, beef with onions and garlic) and the cheese and onion mash. For the gravy, I asked for a recommendation between the traditional brown and the caramelized onion - without hesitation, the server recommended the caramelized onion. "Every time," she said. So, I went with that. Everything was outstanding - the flavors in the sausages and mash were so good that I hardly needed the gravy (though it was delicious, too). My favorite soup place next door was closed on a recent Sunday but, lucky for me, Mums was open! Conveniently located near the university, I walked inside by myself and was greeted immediately by a smiling, charismatic server who welcomed me in without making me feel awkward for dining alone. I thought it would be difficult to make up my mind until my eyes fell upon "Fish Pie." Fish Pie is not really a thing in the United States like it is in Ireland and the UK. Fish Pie was one of my daughter's favorite dishes when she was a student in Dublin. So, yes, I ordered Fish Pie and looked forward to finally trying it. I placed my order before the people seated at the table next to me placed theirs but their food arrived long before mine did. When the server brought me my steaming hot plate of Fish Pie and veg (which ended up being peas and carrots), she said something to the effect of "it takes longer because you don't ever want to eat fish pie cold." She was right. And it was huge! And worth the wait. It was a little chilly outside so this hot dish of seasoned fish pieces topped with creamy mashed potatoes and melted cheddar really hit the spot. The food and service at Mum's was great, but the seating was a little claustrophobic, which is why I'm giving this a 4/5. On our first day in Edinburgh, we dropped into Mum's because we were craving something hearty, comforting, and traditional (I especially wanted to try haggis as soon as possible). There are like 2393472847249 restaurants to choose from near Edinburgh's Old Town, and honestly, we chose this one because it appeared on a few "best of" lists online. The restaurant isn't small by European standards, but because it was pretty busy, it felt small. We were seated at a table near the back, which was pretty dim despite it being the middle of the day (you can tell by the poor lighting in my food photos). Next to us, were seated a group of young women who appeared to know each other from one of the hostels nearby. That being said, this place definitely caters/appeals to travelers/Americans. Our server was pleasant, quick, and able to explain the menu items to us. No complaints at all. I ordered the haggis from the "Starters" portion of the menu, to kick things off. For those that don't know, haggis is Scotland's traditional dish and it's made with ground up sheep/calf organs, spices, oats, and other things. I was hesitant as hell about trying this, but it smelled pretty good and was plated beautifully, on a bunch of mashed potatoes and other veggies. It also came with a gravy boat. I immediately poured gravy all over mine, which was kind of a mistake as I found the gravy to be overpowering and salty. The haggis, however, was pretty good, especially when eaten with the veggies. It's got a very unique and strongly-spiced flavor that I honestly can't compare to anything else. Just try it. Order one for the table and let everyone take a bite. Since I ordered something so unusual for me as a starter, I went with something I knew I'd love for my main dish - a vegan pumpkin and sage pie. The pies come in regular/large sizes and I'm glad I got a regular, because my friend ordered a large-sized one and it was HUGE. As a pumpkin/squash fanatic, I was all about this pie. It was flavorful, hot, and comforting. The pastry was crispy and delicious. I'm not vegan and I was very pleased. The pie was served with peas and carrots, which were pretty bland, but that seems to be the UK standard. I love those veggies anyway, so I ate them all. Also, chips (french fries) because everything in the UK comes with a side of chips. At this point in my trip, I realized that the chips at basically every place I went to look and taste pretty much the same. I don't know if they all use the same frozen chips supplier? Finally, I had to try one of their sausages. I wish I could remember which one I ordered, but it was on their specials menu (there were three options). I asked the waitress to pick her favorite, and she did. I know it was pork-based and really delicious. Anyway, a good place to drop in if you're in the area. I visited this restaurant with my sister on our trip to Edinburgh on a recommendation from a friend. It did not disappoint. The food options were simple, but well done. I ordered the shepherds pie. The mashed potatoes on top were slightly dry, but when eaten in the same bite as the delicious stew/filling in the bottom it wasn't a great detractor from the dish. The staff were a little hard to read. Not sure if their demeanor/humor were more on the dry side or if they were just having a tougher day. In any event, it was not at all a problem, just something that stands out in my memory now (writing the review approximately a month later). The restaurant decor was really kitschy. I'm so glad my tour guide recommended this place. I really wanted to find a good spot for lunch that wasn't super touristy and I found this place. The server was super accommodating in helping me find a dish that was suitable to the size of how much food intake I had. I ordered the starter version of the HAGGIS. Mash, pureed turnip, and haggis was the perfect combination and size. I finished MOST of it and topped it off with a GINGER BEER. I wish I had friends to come with to try other dishes.
