They have come along way from their start of having some space at Variety bar to being part of the bigger Tribeca group and now opening a location in the centre of the city at Royal Exchange Square. First impressions were not great, it was much smaller than we thought and the table our group was sat at was very cramped in and really close to another groups table. The staff were friendly enough though and we went on with picking our mains and sides. I had a burger and shared poutine & Mac n cheese. The food was slightly disappointing to be honest. The portions on everything were very small in size and I don't feel like we got value for money at all. The poutine was under cooked and the sauce was to runny for my taste. The Mac was ok, but it was very very plain. The burger was average, but gone in two bites. (OK Maybe three) All in the food was pretty meehhhh and a bit disappointing. I would not be in a hurry to go back. I can only give a low rating I am afraid.

As a meat eater I approve of this notion (until we have too many of them by which point the next craze will be upon us anyway). And so to Smoak, once of Pivo Pivo, now with it's own location on Royal Exchange Square. It's a small space, and we were sitting in the back where room is a little on the tight side. We had pre-ordered to avoid the lunchtime rush and so I already knew that I would be having the Dirty Harry. After being shown to our table, drinks were ordered and delivered and the food arrived promptly after that. I hadn't ordered any chips or sides with mine (in a vague effort to be healthy) so when it was placed in front of me it did look a little on the small side as it was on a plate clearly made to hold some fries (which most of my colleagues had). An odd thing to note, perhaps, but presentation is everything right? Well of course it's not. Taste is everything! The Dirty Harry - a venison hot dog, topped with BBQ pulled pork, cheese and fried onions, all served in a brioche style hot dog bun - looked pretty average when it arrived and did little to prove me wrong. The fried onions scattered on the top were more charred and crispy than fried and so small all the flavour was gone, so that was a bit of a disappointment. The first bite of the hot dog proved promising, the flavour of the venison hot dog was there, the cheese wasn't overpowering, and the little kick of sweetness from the pulled pork helped, although I'm not sure the brioche bun was the best idea, making the entire thing a little on the sweet side. However by the last few bites I was pretty underwhelmed and left with just a bun that was pretty dry, and a some of the venison hot dog, I ended up adding some ketchup just to make it easier to eat. Price wise paying just short of £10 for a pretty average hotdog and a ginger beer didn't feel like value for money. My whelmed remains undered and I don't see me hurrying back to Smoak any time soon. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that special

Only included the "flats" which had a minuscule amount of meat on them, but the sauce was very good. The pulled pork sandwich was a very odd pairing of flavors. It had bland, dry pork (with no bbq flavor whatsoever), lettuce, tomato, an onion ring and some coleslaw. I'm giving 3 stars for the friendly and attentive service. One star for the food.

Well it has a new menu and an interesting sounding one at that. We were initially only popping in for drinks but the smell of food grabbed us by the ghoolies, well if I had any that's were it would be grabbed. I had a cheeky wee Frulli Strawberry Beer to whet my whistle and opted to have the Macdog for my main. We also inquired to the bacon popcorn which they didn't have in. I thought it was going to be something awesome but it's just bacon flavouring on popcorn. The girl explained that the top list of sides were actually all bar snacks. I was a little disappointed. My Macdog arrived and I have to say that 'd' word again. Yup, I was disappointed. It was bun heavy, very dry with a funny tasting dog and the driest macaroni pasta (no sauce) topped with three triangles of plastic cheese. Now, I loooooove cheese but I cannot stand plastic cheese. Don't get me wrong, presentation looked good and I'm thankful for the chip portion but I really didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I was super tempted to get the doughnut burger, which I may have to share by looking at Gordon M's photos. I'm not giving up on the place. I like it, to be honest not much has changed since the now past gone LUAC days. They did a cracking redecoration job so there isn't really anything that needs updated yet. So thankful for the ladies toilets being refurbished. I hated them in the Hubbards/The Wise Monkey days. It's definitely worth swinging by for, they have plenty of activities going on including their games room featuring a pool table. Keep an eye to their facebook page as their website seems to be currently down. So, whose up for the doughnut burger?

Dennistoun BBQ does super casual dining really well. You order at the counter and wait around 10-15 minutes (maybe longer if its super busy) and then they'll shout your name so you can grab your food. I have very specific taste in beef burger so more often than not, I start with a chicken burger at a new place before trying a beef one - I think chicken is generally done better than beef. This chicken burger was RIDICULOUS in size, it was mostly all hanging out of the bun as it was so big. Am I complaining? No way, it was absolutely delicious and had that juicy, smoky freshness from grilled chicken that so many places screw up by overcooking. It was hard to eat though so I ended up just aiming on eating the fillet rather than the burger. I tried a couple of sides; cajun fries and mac cheese. The cajun fries are amazing and probably the best I can remember eating in Glasgow. There was just the right amount of seasoning and they packed a good punch. You know what makes Cajun fries even better? Dipping them into mac cheese. Oh yeh, I went there and I'm not ashamed. My friend Sharon M wasn't all that impressed with the mac cheese but she is pretty judgemental (I mean that as a compliment, she makes a damn amazing mac cheese) - personally, I liked it. It was cheesy, the mac was cooked just right. Simple, and good. This isn't the kind of place to eat and then sit about chatting with your pals, so we headed up the road for dessert. I'll be back sooner rather than later for more of that ridiculous chicken. They also do takeaway - phone in your order so you don't have to wait too long as it was really busy on a Friday night. I understand why.

    A godsend: good barbecue in Britain--the best we've found, and not just because they actually know…read morethe difference between "barbecue" and "grilled food". In case you're skeptical, they often have samples--after which, resistance is futile. I've now visited just twice and wish I could go more often. Not only does the barbecue smell alluring, look great, and taste wonderful, but Toby also said what any great pit-master should: "We're still experimenting." Oh, to be a test subject for all those experiments. Food (4.5): Excellent applewood-smoked pulled pork sandwiches (£4) made with local ingredients. Personally, I'd suggest skipping the (tasty) chili jam, which I think over-powers the smoke and pork. The ribs (a new experiment) were great--moist and tender with a good bark (no mean feat)--though I personally would've liked a little more of a smoke ring and a tad more of the delicious barbecue sauce. If Toby starts making oak- or mesquite-smoked brisket, I'll have to initiate a weekly pilgrimage to Edinburgh. People (5): Great people; great service. They know barbecue and will sell you a smoker (or maybe a pit). They're also happy to talk shop... though maybe not to divulge secret ingredients. Side note: I grew up in Texas and have a high bar for barbecue. If you're an aficionado, this probably won't be the best you've ever had, but it's very good and it's certainly the best we've had in Britain. Also, they seem to be aiming to master a range of barbecues. (Right now, it seems mostly NC-style.) It's absolutely worth a visit now, and I'd really love to see what they'll have after a couple more years of experimentation. P.S. I can't believe they keep it up through the Scottish winter. That's dedication.

The combo of the "slaw" and chilli jam is just delicious. Go go go!

I bloody wish I hadn't as it was a terrible meal. If I was told there was not actually a Korean chef in the kitchen I would not be in the slightest bit surprised. I am no Korean food expert, but I have been to the country and tasted the cuisine first hand so I at least have a bit of an idea and to me this was miles and miles away from being authentic. The place is swankier looking than I expected, but really that's one of the few positives I can think of. The prices are crazily high for the portion size and quality. )8 quid for half an aubergine starter!) The service is erratic. They did not give us enough menus for everyone. They gave us sauce bottles that did not pour any sauce. They brought the same dish twice and tried to serve another of our dishes to another table before the bringing it to us. Dishes tried - Korean pancake - nice but expensive. Saves it from being one star review. Gyosas - decent dumplings. Only other nice thing along with the pancake. Kimichi - is Kimichi, it is what it is. Crispy Korean chicken - expensive bland tasteless deep fried cardboard. More fitting in a low grade chinese takeaway. A complete horror show of a course. Deep fried aubergine - average tasting and a complete rip off. Waiter should have been wearing a highway man mask when serving it. Bibimbap - Korean beef rice bowl. Shocking rip off, about two bits of shredded beef in it and 4 veggies and the rest was rice. Usually I would only comment on my own food, but honestly mine were not actually that bad in comparison to some of my fellow guests. Fatty, chewy meat, tiny portions and bizarre combinations. If I had got a couple of the dishes other people had chosen I may have actually cried in the restaurant. The prices are way way way to high. The quality and portion size is really really had. The service is brusque at best. There are much better Korean restaurants in Glasgow. In my opinion this one is really going to need to up its game if it's going to survive.

It's really lovely, a nice sized dining room, good natural light, comfortable seating, pretty asian inspired looking bar, funky lighting. It was cool and I liked it. The service were brisk and to the point. There were a couple of staff members who were a little friendlier, but on the whole the staff didn't really interact with us at all other than to take our order and thank us for coming. Okay so let's talk food - they advertise themselves as Korean but I would say that they are more of an asian fusion place with Sushi, Teriyaki, Udon and Yaki Soba all on the menu alongside the Korean BBQ, Hot Pots and Bibimbap. We decided to order up some appetizers to share, the first thing we noticed was how eye wateringly expensive they were. Let me take you through what we had Kimchi Pancake (£8.60) - easily the best dish of the night by a mile, it was flavourful and crispy and we loved it, but it wasn't even close to being worth almost £9. Chicken Gyoza (£6.90) - 6 pretty nice lightly fried dumplings, they had lots of filling and a nice enough flavour. It was another favourite dish at the table. Crispy Chicken Korea Style (£8.70) - the chicken I didn't hate, it was a good sized portion but it was pretty small pieces and chewy, I ate it but a few at my table didn't do back for a second piece. It reminded me of deep fried shredded chicken from a chinese take away. Deep Fried Aubergine (£8.60) - This was by far and away the dish that annoyed us most cost wise. We were expecting maybe cubes of battered Aubergine....but it was literally half an aubergine which had been deep fried, and some sweet miso sauce squirted across the top for nearly £9. Let's take a second to think about that - Half an Aubergine and a drizzle of sauce for NINE of Queen Elizabeth's British pound sterling. Shockingly over priced. Unfortunately things did not improve with my main and I genuinely could've wept when it arrived. I went for the Teriyaki Duck Breast (£10.60) this arrived as a small portion of overly fatty flavourless duck breast, sliced thinly with a tiny bit of greasy watery sauce and a side salad leaves - no veg, nothing. The rest of my table looked on at me with sympathy as I ate my dry duck and boiled rice which I had to pay £2.50 for. As you can tell I was utterly unimpressed with the value for money and at £25 per person I felt it was obscenely over priced for the food we were served. Especially given that I came home and had to have something to eat because I was still hungry. I am actually still really disappointed by the whole experience this morning as I write this. Sadly this isn't somewhere I would visit again even if other people wanted to go, I feel like I was seriously fleeced for this meal and that is not a feeling I enjoy or wise to repeat.

    Having spent more time in McDonalds over the past couple of years (with friends and friends who…read morehave children and babysitting a couple of grumpy teenagers now and again, and my other half and 2 teenage children), it has changed from my student days nearly 11 years ago. Before it was something that vaguely resembled meat on a soggy bun and watery coke to wash it down served with fries that were maybe potato in a previous lifetime (one good thing back then about McD's, they let you add the salt yourself rather than Wimpy and Burger King where the salt is added when they are cooked), the staff (rarely spoke and were definitely unhelpful) looked about as grey as the burgers and the decor and the furniture was functional not stylish (think lots of moulded plastic). Now they've done an about turn and realised that if they are going to survive they need to change. How have they changed? Well salads for a start, and I don't mean just a few limp bits of lettuce. The salad bowls are well thought out with good choices, garden salad (greens with tomato, cucumber, onion etc), grilled chicken salad and crispy coated chicken salad and Caeser salad (as well as being excellent portion sizes). With all the salads you are given the dressing in a tub, so its up to you how much you slather on. Also on the menu now are Quorn burgers (though I haven't tried these yet, but they actually look really good), so vegetarians now have a choice apart from the obligatory bean burger (which is hit and miss at the best of times). The deserts have also changed and there is now fresh fruit, fruit salads and I've also seen natural yoghurt served with mixed berries. .........and thats just for the adults. What about the kids? We've all seen the documentaries about how badly the kids (and adults!) of today are eating. You only have to turn on the tv to see Jamie Oliver campaigning about school dinners or the fast food documentary 'Super size me' (was it this that prompted some of McD's changes I wonder?) as well as the scary health programmes that tell us that most of todays kids will not have a very long life span thanks to the junk they eat. ............So that brings me back to what McD's now have on offer to children. Before it was chicken nuggets (and I've never seen chicken look like that) covered in ketchup (which is full of sugar and salt), although these options are still available they now offer chicken grills (mini proper chicken breast fillets grilled, no salt, no coatings), carrot sticks, veggie bites, grapes, apples, corn on the cob and fish bites (like fish fingers and 100% fish fillet). These are only a few of the now 108 items available to children for the new happy meals (prices range between 2.49 and 3.49 depending where you go). They also have a nutrition chart for their most popular products and their childrens basic menu printed on the back of the liners they use for the trays, so you can actually see that things are improving and they really are trying to cut down the amount of sugar, fat and salt in their food. Also available (if you ask a member of staff) is a booklet that contains the nutrition facts for every single product they sell (the information is also available on their website). Add to this mix, special offers on burgers that are only available for certain periods of time or on certain days (their Deli sandwiches which look very like Subway's sandwiches). The decor has changed and looks more Jasper Conran than eastern block with swish leather look stools and block sofas. Unfortunately the new look isn't going to last. Only a month after the furniture was changed I started noticing little tears in the fabric, stains on the wood tables and the children's art work which had been up on my previous visit had been removed to show that they had stuck it up with glue. The dried glue 'blobs' still attached to flaking paint. I'll give McD's their due the whole chain has tried to change but in some locations you aren't going to get people eating rabbit food (salads) or being respectful of the furniture. It is meant to be a high turn over restaurant and I have noticed the staff make a lot of fuss around you if you've been sat for more than 30 minutes (you try being quicker when you have kids in tow) if the restaurant is busy in a hope you'll hurry up and leave and vacate your seat for the next hungry hoard coming in. I don't like being rushed especially when I've paid for the privilege to sit down and eat and I've noticed this branch is worse than most at doing it. The toilets were grim and thats about as polite as I can be about them. I'm sure they were clean but the lack of respect I noticed by customer and also staff left the toilets in a very horrid state, with no proper handbasins only the metal wall mounted ones. I realise this is for space saving but I now make a point of trying not to use the facilities! Overall, I try now and avoid this and other McD's as much as possible their recent
