    The Californian
    Asia H.

Had a stellar experience here! We wandered in after passing up a few places- not being familiar with Glasgow. I, of course, had my eye on the veggie burgers. The set up is that the customer sits down first and goes up to order at the counter, having perused the menu. There was some kind of hold-up with the computer which took quite a while, but we were too hungry to really mind. I ordered the Californian- a bean burger with cheddar, tomato, avocado, chilli mayo, and crispy onions. I also ordered the chunky fries. The food came out relatively quickly, which was a huge plus. The other huge plus was that it was fantastic! The burger was perfectly cooked, not soft and squishy as bean burgers can occasionally be. The flavours were incredible (for next time, I'll want pineapple and jalapeño) and seemed to be mixed around perfectly in each bite. The fries were nice as well- they could have been a little crispier, but came in a well-sized portion. I also tasted the sweet potato fries, which could have been more seasoned but were otherwise yummy. Service was excellent, and we were checked on repeatedly but not in a linger-y way. The only thing I'm disappointed in is that the Dublin GBKs don't seem to offer the Californian! I guess another trip to Glasgow is in order.

Ginger and lemongrass fizz. Free refills

GBK is good food at a hefty price. The wife and I were in the mood for gourmet burgers and sweet potato chips. The decision making process in choosing a burger place is increasingly difficult in Glasgow, especially with so many on the same street. We settled on GBK after noticing that they had sweet potato fries and a good selection of chicken and veggie burgers. i'm always a sucker for anything cajun or cajun-style, so I decided to get the Cajun Blue Chicken Burger. It was blackened with a nice seasoning and topped with salad and a blue cheese slaw which I was skeptical about at first, but really happy with it in the end. I'm not one who normally complains about the prices for food, but I have to say I was blown away by the price of the sweet potato fries when the order finally came to the table. As seen in some of the pics on Yelp, they fit in a cup that is about the size of a coffee cup... and they cost £3.95!!! What? Yes, you read that right, just under 4 quid for serving of chips slightly bigger than a Happy Meal portion. These fries had no special seasoning, and there was no salt around to be added to them (we found out when we were leaving that the salt, ketchup, and peanuts were on a separate counter near where we ordered our food). While the price of the chips left a bad taste in my mouth, GBK has great food. The wait staff were very helpful, and I even liked the fact that my Ginger and Lemongrass Fizz comes with free refills. There are plenty of other good things on the menu that I look forward to trying once I win the lottery. In the meantime, I'll be saving a few quid per person and get a burger (and much larger sweet potato fries) down the street.

Best burger...so far! My friend has been trying to drag me here for ages, and I'm so glad she did! It was very quiet thanks to it being 3pm on a Wednesday. The staff were helpful, coming over immediately to get us a table and menus. The menu selection is quite extensive but I decided to play it safe with a bacon and american cheese burger. It was exquisite. They even ask when you're ordering how you want the meat cooked. I asked for medium to well, and it was still quite pink, so if you aren't a fan of pink meat go for Well done. The skinny fries which I ordered were so moorish! I mean, emphasis on the skinny here, they are threads compared to normal fries, but so good. I ordered a salted caramel milkshake and would have one every day if I could. Delicious! No lumpy bits, a full taste and just mmmmmm. I did also snaffle some of my friends hollumi cheese and Green spice hot sauce. It was amazing! The sauce went perfectly with the cheese, and while quite hot had a really fresh taste of kiwi and lime. I may buy a bottle... The decor is an interesting 70s chic, with different glass light shades and a brown orange and white theme across it's booths. It was a tad on the pricey side but if you get their app they are very generous with their offers.

    Skinny Fries....

With so many burger joints on burger row, it's easy to get lost and just pick any of them at random at any given time. A burger is a burger is a burger....right? Not right! For those of you who have frequented the many burger joints around here, you know which ones are the greatest of them all. Sadly for me, Goumet Burger Kitchen borderlines "meh" and A-oK. Sophie K and I worked up a bit of a hunger after a day at the Yoga Show doing "broga" (yoga that's not just for guys- but you need a bit of muscle) and a super long class on mindfulness (aka loads of meditation), so we had our heart set on a burger. Our first choice (as we suspected) was packed out with a line out the door so we figured, since I hadn't been to GBK, we'd give it a go. As a lot of places are doing now, we were seated, but then told that we were to order up at the counter. We looked over the menu and noticed that the burgers are quite expensive here, given that most of them are their plain cheeseburgers with a few extra bits and bobs for a substantial amount more moola. I went with the 6oz cheese burger with smoked cheese and an order of onion rings. Sophie ordered skinny fries along with her meal as we were going to share both sides. My order came roughly to about £14 which was a bit more than I was hoping to spend for the small amount of food that I received. Mental note, If I'm ever back here, order a fizz- healthier option to a coke and free unlimited refills. My diet coke came as is, so refills. It took a bit of time for our food to arrive. I was able to head to their toilets to change out of my yoga clothes, which were single rooms every other marked for male and female, and still had to wait for our food to arrive. Once it did though, I was well and truly ready to be knocked off my socks. The burger was ok. It was medium, which if you look at my pictures, was super pink. I've ordered medium elsewhere before and it was cooked a bit more than this. Sophie K ordered hers well done and it was still pink. Maybe the chef was having an off day. Needless to say, my stomach was off for the next day. I ordered smoked cheese, which I couldn't taste at all. The burger came with a relish, that I meant to order on the side, which overpowered the whole burger. Blah! The onion rings were pretty good but the skinny fries were shameful. They were basically matchstick potatoes. Too wee to eat one at a time, that's for sure. In no time, we scarfed down the small portion, feeling a bit unsatisfied. Kind of in the style of Nando's, they offer a few choices of sauces to take back to the table, but to be honest, I could have done with plain ketchup or some bbq sauce. Instead, there were random fruity sauces which didn't tickle my fancy. There are also peanuts available kind of like Five Guys, but I passed on those as well. I did appreciate, however, being asked for tap water instead of having to ask for it. That was a nice touch. All in all, not my favourite in burger row, maybe it had to do with the pinkness of the burger, but I wouldn't actually rush back here. There are far too many other burger joints that serve higher quality, bigger portions more aligned to their prices.

Panko crumbed chicken burger with skin-on fries and Harrisa dip

There are so many burger joints now in Glasgow it's hard to pick the best one. GBK is not the best one. However it is the one I am most loyal to and visit the most. The food is not why I am loyal. The beef burgers tend to be very greasy, and the variety of toppings fail to grab the imagination or contain ingredients I'm not a fan of. The vegetarian bean patty is bland. The panko chicken burger is decent but there is better available elsewhere. The brioche bun falls apart just by looking at it. The reasons I keep going back are - *The phone app - it makes it easy to order and pay. You can schedule when you'd like to pick your burger up. You get rewards for using the app. There is constant free burger giveaways. *The lime milkshake. If I was to drown in a vat of this stuff I would be the happiest man on earth. *The friendly staff. Nice, chatty, and always willing to go that extra bit to make sure you're happy. *The Harissa dip. Dipping the skin-on fries into this is one of my food heavens. *You can always get a seat. There's only so many times you can awkwardly stand outside Bread Meats Bread, or inside Handmade Burger before it gets annoying.

    Blue cheese burger
    Suzanne J.

I wanted to try some gourmet burgers and see what the hype was. I generally feel that burgers are overpriced, as at the end of the day...they are just burgers. However, I have changed my opinion due to the awesome tastiness that was the blue cheese burger. For the blue cheese burger I could either choose a slice of real blue cheese (Gorgonzola) or some blue cheese sauce. I opted for the real deal... I guess I was assuming a thin slice, but I ended up with a generous slab. The beef patty was unreal, it was so meaty. Almost like having a steak in my bun! It was medium/rare cooked I believe? Then I also ordered some truffle cheese chips. These were good, but I thought it was strange having this hard cheese (grada padano) that didn't melt over my chips. I had some amazing juice - Ginger & Lemongrass, which had free refills and tasted very fresh. I downloaded the app to get free baconaise sauce. As far as I can see, I should get free fries or side on my next visit. That visit will probably be relatively soon. Now I wonder if I need to try more gourmet burger joints in town!

    Cheesburger, skinny fries & baconnaise

Not a spot I would usually pick for lunch, given it's location nearby some other great burger restaurants, but a free burger from their birthday giveaway made me pay them a visit. There were not many people in there but I still had to wait a little bit to get noticed by the staff and seated. The waitress was friendly enough and let me pick a spot, giving me both the regular and lunch menus to order from. Being limited by the voucher and only able to choose between a cheeseburger and a veggie burger, I went for the cheesburger and ordered skinny fries with baconnaise sauce on the side. The food arrived pretty quickly and immediately I was struck by the size of the fries. I knew they were gonna be skinny and I know a few people have mentioned it here before, but I could not imagine them being this skinny. They are literally half the size of a regular pencil. Not only that means they taste somewhat bland, but it also (which bothered me much more) makes it really difficult to eat them with sauce, because they break everytime you try to dip them in it. The baconnaise, however, was definitely a highlight of the meal. An amazing sauce full of flavor, with big chunks of bacon in it, a true MVP of this game. The burger itself was pretty average, the meat had a very strong smoky flavor of charcoal, which bothered me a little, but the bun was really nice. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience but it wasn't anything special either. It might be worth coming back to actually try some of their gourmet burgers, but if you're wanting something as regular as a cheesburger, I would recommend heading somewhere else (Five Guys is just next doors!).

    Strawberry elderflower fizz ! Yum

So we came here over the 5 other popular/new burger joints because they had sweet potato fries ! Last time we went to bread meat bread they were out of sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries just aren't as popular here as they are the states... And I LOVE them ! So first off I love how big the Resturant is, doesn't make me feel as pressured to leave if people are waiting... Which they weren't bc it had plenty of tables... Most were full though. When it comes to small restaurants that's kind of my ish I hate feeling like someone's waiting on me to finish so they can have my table. I want to hangout and chat . So that was great. Sweet potato fries were really good BUT REALLY SMALL serving I mean like child size and they cost £3.95! It was ridiculous. At least they were good but I wouldn't pay for them again... All their fries/ chips looked a bit smaller then I feel the price was for... So they lost a star there. My veggie burger was AMAZING! It was so good that I kept thinking about it as I was eating about WHY I thought it was so good!! 1. Great filling size 2. Yummy bean burger- not overly fried like some places 3. Delicious sauces and toppings (off the menu so they thought of the combination ) 4. They substituted the cheese with goats cheese for me with no extra charge 5. Once again the pairing of the sauces and toppings was fabulous! I think a lot of places have good veggi burgers but nothing gourmet, you put ketchup and mustard on it and maybe a special Mayo sauce with some salad...The Californian veggi burger (what I ordered ) had. Smoked chilli mayo , goats cheese (normal cheddar ) avocado , crispy onions and a sweet chutney !!! I had the elderflower and strawberry fizz which was lovely and had free refills ! :) The place was a pound or so more then some of the other places and the chips were too small but by Californian veggie burger won me over and I would come back to have it ! Worth every bites. Obviously I didn't have their normal beef burger but you'll have to look at someone else's review for that ;)

Mmmm delicious bacon salt. Hei hei!

Actually, I'm not sure if I should be giving 3 or 4 stars. See, Glasgow has an abundance of burger places, and I would say that this is up there with my (maybe even my favourite of all of them) Bread Meats Bread. I came here with a friend who had previously mentioned it, and who really is quite keen on GBK. She raved about the Hei Hei salt, and the elderflower spritz. I have to admit I wasn't super ridiculously hungry (maybe not the best idea when coming to a burger place), but I was happy to see that their main burgers come in smaller sizes as well (the same principal as at that Handmade Burger place). After perusing the menu and my friend deciding that she would have her usual (Chicken, Bacon and Avocado burger. Gosh, I love avocado), and I finally decided opt for the small version of the cheeseburger (you know, you want to start with the classics, because if those are good, it's likely the other things to be good too, right?) with American cheese because I wasn't feeling Swiss. We both decided to get a small portion of the skinny fries (they really are SKINNY), and the elder flower mint spritz. The latter we had a few issues with - first it didn't taste like elderflower but of sparkling water, the second version didn't have any mint, but for me it worked on the third attempt. I should add that their Spritzes (that come in flavours other than elderflower too) are all bottomless with free refills. The burger took a little while and was definitely on the pink side although I had ordered a well-done burger (not keen on blood running down my hands - not while I am eating a burger anyways). However, even pink, my burger didn't bleed. Generally, it was a very clean burger to eat. No grease or fluid or anything dripping! It was great. I also have no issue with the bun to patty issue, and the entire burger stays intact while you eat it. I was happy to have chosen the small version because even the small size is a very generous portion. One thing I would say is that the fries weren't the freshest, but I do enjoy the fact that they are very skinny. On the whole, I left quite happy. I like the interior, although the tables are very close together. The bathrooms are unisex and all have their own little sinks. They're also very colourful. The ordering style is exactly the same as you would find Nandos and that Handmade place across from GBK. The burgers are good.

As a bar it is decent, seems a bit rough about the edges in a dive bar type of way, but the clientele usually are ok and the atmosphere always seems pleasant enough. It's got a lot going on, In that there is a club down stairs, food is served upstairs and there is also a lot of focus on it just being a pub. I've been a good few times and it's usually mobbed. I think that's partly because there ain't any other decent pubs on queen street (that I can think of) and it means everyone heads here. In other areas it might not be my first destination, but where it is it ranks quite highly amongst the places I would stop for a pint if passing. Sometimes it even has some unusual bottles of craft beer hidden in the fridges which is always a good thing. Could be a three on anther street, but a better option on queen street, so I will go with a positive 4 stars.

It's strong ...I can only imagine what having straight buckfast would be like ..I'm glad my first time was in shake form as I'm sure the cream and milk toned down the alcohol and sharpness a lot . The overall flavor really grows on you . It reminds me of like a Neapolitan shake ( heavy on the chocolate and strawberry and no vanilla ice cream ) with a crap ton of added fermented strawberries and maraschino cherries and maraschino cherry syrup . If I was the chef I'd tweak this by adding a rum flambé banana slice or just banana in general would be so nice . Dear Chris (owner of Handmade Burger Co),…read more Ancient proverbs tell us that it is a brave man who puts his personal email address and phone number on every table in his restaurant. It is an even braver man who does it when the restaurant isn't very good. I've always been a firm believer in keeping things simple. Seat me, take my order, bring me a goddamn delicious burger, et voila - you have a happy customer. What I don't want is to get up from my table, cross the restaurant and stand in a queue to place my order. Where did you come up with that idea? Is it really more efficient than getting your more than capable staff to just do table service? I mean, really, it's a gimmick and I hate it. Your menu is vast, and as a veggie i'm not used to being given such choice, so I salute you for that. That doesn't, however, absolve you of your sins. Most burgers are £8/£9 and, of course, don't come with chips, which set me back another £3.50. £2.35 extra got me three small dipping sauces, and you threw in a "side" of one gherkin cut into slices for another £1.65. Oh, and when I ordered a £2.70 diet coke the smiley man behind the till handed me an empty glass and told me that the self-service machine was just "over there". The point i'm trying to make, Chris, is that this is nonsense. Why should I memorise my entire table's order, get out of my seat and stand for 10 minutes behind four other diners when you have a restaurant full of perfectly good staff? Is it because I should be delighted and in awe at you're persistent reminders that every burger is made fresh and by hand? Because that really is the least I expect for an £8 burger. What next? Am I mean't to be applauding you because you don't water down the coke? To be fair, the burger was quite nice. More than quite nice, it was good. But you know there's something wrong when you're sat in a gourmet burger restaurant and you can see two more through the window. I love Glasgow city centre, and I think that it deserves better than yet another gimmicky burger restaurant which charges crazy amounts for very average food. And that's what you are, Chris - very average. I'm sorry. It's not you, it's me. I just don't think we're right for each other. I deserve better, Hannah (hater of nonsense)
