I wanted to try five guys since I heard they had opened in Glasgow, I was in the town today and doing some other business and decided to go to Five guys and get a meal and see what all the fuss was about?
There was a young Scottish guy standing outside of the restaurant, I spoke to him for a couple of minutes to get some insider information, he told me about the combos and the quality of the hand made burger patties and the fresh cut fries, I thanked him and went in.
I got a Double cheeseburger at £8.50p, I got medium size fries at £4.00p & the standard £2.50p drink that offers as many refills as you may want.
I was a bit watery eyed at the bill of £15.00p for a burger and chips and some ginger, I almost asked to cancel the order and get a refund there and then, I have never paid that amount of money in my life for a burger and fries and a drink, even at the burger places on the motorway down south etc.
I opted for the extras such as grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, crispy bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, green pepper ( I did want to try and get my moneys worth).
I was given an empty cup and a straw, and a receipt with a number on it an instructed to stand at an area and wait on my order, it reminded me of being in Argos, where they shout your number out, In the meantime I filed a bowl with some ketchup from a pump style machine,, got some salt and pepper and tissues, and waited on my order.
Eventually after what seemed like a long time my number was called out and I eagerly went over and collected my expensive burger meal, my meal was handed over in a plain brown paper bag, peered inside and seen a foil wrapped burger and a polystyrene or paper cup filled with fries, there were also a lot of these fries on the bottom of the brown bag, even though the cup was full.
So I walked over to find a seat with my expensive burger and chips in hand, I firstly went to the Drinks machine, this was good fun, I filled my cup with cherry coke zero, vanilla coke zero and Lemon coke zero, yea all three in the one cup, though i could not find the button for ice??
So I sat down and opened up my burger, I have to admit it was very appetising, it is after all a home made burger, and with all the topping s etc I asked for I was happy, there was a lot of eating in it, on a par with a whopper I would have said, mabey even a double whopper? It was a bit nicer and had more of a home cooked flavour and did not seem like the usual processed crap.
My fries were delicious, and so many of them, but for £4 I would expect so, I really enjoyed the meal, I was delicious and I would recommend five guys for good flavours and home cooked style etc.
I had the Burger meal at 1pm and I usually eat a evening meal, I was not hungry the rest o that day such was the size of the meal and was filled up til breakfast almost a day after .
The down side was the exorbitant price of £15.00p for this meal, I would have said it was worth £8-£9.00p for the whole lot, even £7.50p.
All in all I am glad I went to five guys as the meal tasted excellent and the place was clean etc, I just think the price was far far too much to ask for a Burger and chips and drink, even though the patties and fries are home made.
I would not go back due to the prices, I could have had 3 whopper meals or Mcdonalds etc etc for the price of this, and some of the stuff on their menu is not so bad either.
I think the type of people who visit five guys restaraunt's regularly are pretentions and don't really know the value of money, because this place as good as it is comes at a high price, its very expensive and a bit of a rip off TBH.
Good place for taking someone for a Birthday treat, or for a celebration meal for a teenager or something like that, but due to price I would avoid this place and get a decent burger and chips from Burger king at 1/3 of the price with as much quality and flavour.
Tasty food, shame about the prices.
On a different note I was also taken aback at the amount of workers I this restaurant who could not understand my accent, even though I am from the Glasgow area, I know we are living in a multicultural society, but this was evident across the restaurant, try and employ some Scottish locals who understand the local lingo and will put cash back into the Scottish and Glasgow economy, there are too many young Glaswegians and in the West of Scotland going without work, or in zero hours contracts and part time jobs if they are lucky at all, and too many migrant workers winning jobs they should be getting, so take note five guys, support the local economy and people and bring down your ridiculous prices and you may last in Glasgow more than a year. read more
