I've wanted to try Taco Bell for ages, I missed out when I was in Florida in 2011 so couldn't wait to try it when the first Scottish store opened this month.
We tried the Big Bell Box, which is a larger meal for one (£6.69), the Crunchwrap Supreme meal (£5.29) and a Pork Quesadilla (£3.89). They were all good, especially the Crunchwrap - described as 'A warm soft flour tortilla layered with beef or Mexican chicken, nacho cheese sauce, a crunchy tostada shell, lettuce, reduced fat sour cream and tomatoes'. A vegetarian option for the Crunchwrap is also available (refried beans). As I haven't been to Taco Bell in the US I can't compare the taste directly, but I thought the flavours were good and liked the Mexican chicken and pulled pork fillings (didn't try the beef or beans - yet). The nacho cheese sauce is nice. Compared to the US it's a bit more expensive as you would expect (e.g. a quesadilla is about the same in £ and $, $3.99 average in US according to procelisto.com), although I'm not sure how the portion sizes compare (probably bigger in US?).
Their food is not really Mexican, more Tex-Mex so if you want real Mexican food this is not the place to go (fact: there are no Taco Bells in Mexico after it left the Mexican market for the 2nd time in 2010!).
Overall it's cheaper than alternatives for similar food like Taco Mazama and Barburrito but I feel like it's less authentic (not necessarily a bad thing as their food has its own unique flavours and tastes pretty good) and uses cheaper ingredients.
For kids they have the 'kidsadilla' (chicken) or chicken rice bowl which are both £2.99. Cheese kidsadilla is also an option. The kidsadilla is pretty simple - just cheese and meat in a grilled tortilla with no options for extra fillings. As a happy meal is cheaper, bigger and has a toy I can't recommend this. The full size quesadilla is just as simple.
Almost forgot to mention the churros...these are not good, too oily and crispy.
So good and bad points but overall I like the taste and would like to come back soon to try the other options on the menu. read more
