During lunch time, there's a deal where you can get a can of soda and a bag of chips along with a burrito. Pretty sweet deal.

Traveling through Scotland we've been amazed at all the Mexican food restaurants. After a terrible plate of natchos, we've avoided them until last night. The lure of a margarita brought us in to this place that serves water out of Jose Cuervo bottles. The ambiance was lively and had the bright ceramics of our home town neighbor. Ben, our waiter, was wonderful-calmly dealing with our concerns and bringing us dishes one at a time. We started with fish tacos which were delicious and had slices of Serrano peppers. The spiciness was welcome. We had prawn tostadas that I would order again without hesitation. Quality of the prawns was excellent. The spirit of Mexican cuisine was in these dishes although they were different than the Mexican food we've had in Mexico and in San Diego. The calamari was a stretch for being Mexican but tasted great. We were disappointed to not have the margarita rims salted and the avocado was barely adequate for us but otherwise this place is great for Mexican food in Scotland.

As other reviews have said, this place is small and you will need a booking most nights of the week. I phoned a few days in advance and could only get a table for 8pm on a Wednesday - they try to do their dinner service in two seatings, so it's either pre theatre if you're in early, or a la carte at the 8pm seating. When we arrived our table wasn't ready and so we were told to sit at another one, but then those guests arrived and so we moved to stand up again. The space is really small and so it's a little pokey/awkward - especially as the group who were at our table were asked to finish up and one of the guests seemed really miffed about this. Anyway, we were seated and given some menus, tortillas and margaritas while looking over the menu. I ordered the empanadilla with beef, chorizo & cheese to start, followed by the taco station. I had definitely scoffed too many tortillas but the empanadilla was delicious - served with a lovely sour cream sauce and actually quite big for a starter. The tacos were a mix of crispy corn and soft shell tacos and you can choose whatever fillings you want from about 8 options. I had refried bean, salmon and chicken which were all lovely. The chicken had some apple mixed through it which was odd but a nice twist. Our bill was about £24 each including tip and soft drinks and service was super friendly and helpful, even though they were clearly rushed off their feet. I can't wait to go back!

After another strenuous workout session with our trainer in Kelvingrove Park, we were ravenous. We quickly popped home to change, and headed out. Lumberjack suggested Bibi's, which is down the road from our flat... I was hesitant, but I figured I would give it another go. Random aside... funnily enough, over dinner the other night with a fellow American, we were just discussing how British interpretation of Mexican food is sooooo beyond off. These attempts are noted, but never satisfy the bill. She was telling me about her adventures of seeking Mexican in London... while I explained I've given up, and have been fulfilling my Mexican food needs at home with my very own tortilla press. *sigh* Anyway, so I approached Bibi's with the mentality "this is not Mexican food... this is not Mexican food". Upon arriving, we were sat at our table by the very friendly hostess and served complementary margarita shots. Half of the 10/11 tables were occupied, which included a birthday party. The service was great and friendly. We were served chips and salsa, which I was pretty pleased with. Followed by a chicken quesadilla start... also pretty tasty. Then we both had beef burritos... now these burritos were OK, but it was like they used Hormel canned chili (google if you're not familiar) with chunks of CARROTS for the burrito filling. I always tell my friends back in Mexico about the things they serve here in the UK, and we all get a real kick out of it because it's so not Mexican (especially the chunks of carrots in burritos). I only ate about half of it and I was done. So if you take the approach that this is not real Mexican food, then you'll be pleased with the freshness and satisfied. I've bumped up the rating by one star because of that said approach.

Instead the main changes are on the menu and the attitude of the staff. My big problem with Pinto was it slowly felt like a production line as time went on, this is now the opposite - you are greeted at the door by a friendly face, the staff behind the counter are friendly and chatty, and there seems a lot more love and attention put into making your food now. The menu itself is made up with the exact same menu as Pinto, but with additions to the burritos - a loaded burrito (a standard burrito with coleslaw and guacamole), and a superfood burrito (coleslaw replacing the rice), there is also the addition of Churos to the menu which is great for a sweet tooth like me. The food itself hasn't changed much, there's just a couple of tweaks I noticed. I spotted herbs and spices being added to the rice while I waited. My favourite part is the bland chicken that continually disappointed in Pinto has gone. The chicken now has a subtle kick of spice to it that complements everything else in the burrito brilliantly. A much welcome rebrand.

The restaurant itself was quite nice. It's right in the heart of Glasgow just down the streets from all the shops and bars. Staffs were all welcoming which is a major priorities at restaurants. Drink wise, it was a full bar so anything you would like they had. Started off with 2 margaritas which was quite nice. And for starters, chicken katsu which you would never see on the menu at a traditional Mexican restaurant. It was quite nice, good crunch and nicely battered. For entrees, still odd but the katsu dinner served with rice in a sauce with scallions garnish. It was quite tasty to say. Also, the fajitas platter which was ok. Nothing major to rave about but it was good. It wasn't sizzling on a skillet how the states serves it. The way it was presented was meat on one tray, another tray had the sides of sauce of sour cream, salsa and guacamole. And the last was the tortillas. Portions of meat and grilled veggies were very skimpy. Other dishes that were ordered from our group was a taco platter which came as a build your own tacos. Three different meats, tortillas and the condiments. Even some of the starters had nothing to do with Mexican food. I guess you have to add traditional items at different restaurants to please everyone. Not saying I'm a connoisseur of Mexican food but having loads throughout Mexico and the states, it was just ok. I can say I finally tried it.

Having tried other bits and pieces of Latin inspired cooking I figured a Cuban restaurant would probably be a pretty safe bet. Having wandered past Poco Havana a few weeks back, it went straight to the top of the "to try list." So, at around 9pm on a Saturday night we arrived to a quiet-ish, but not totally empty restaurant. We took a seat, ordered a jug of frozen margaritas (yes!) and looked at the menus. The first impression we got was that the restaurant was warm and welcoming and that the smells coming from the kitchen were awfully promising. The second impression we got was that for a restaurant named for Cuba's capital, it serves an awful lot of Mexican food. About half the menu is given over to burritos, tacos and enchiladas. Perhaps that's no bad thing, but I was kind of surprised. Anyway, I ordered the hurrachas con chorizo to start. It's a kind of corn meal pancake which was served really crunchy and topped with chorizo, potato, avocado, mushrooms and sour cream. My braver partner went for the almost death wings. I tried one - they're hot. I mean, I could probably have eaten one, if provided with sufficient water, but not the 5 he was served. We decided to stick to the "Cuban Corner" of the menu for our mains. I chose the Pernil Relleno cos Moros y Christianos - a garlicy, citrussy and lightly spiced dish with huge juicy chunks of tender roasted pork shoulder, served with rice and peas. My goodness that pork was good and it's nice to get a change from the ubquitous pulled pork that seems to be everywhere right now. My partner chose the Ropa Vieja, a slow roasted, chipotle spiced, shredded beef dish, again with rice and peas. A delicious as it was, after his 5 chicken wings he struggled to finish it. Fortunately the staff didn't mind at all that he wanted to take the rest home with him and made a point of wrapping it extra carefully so it didn't leak. We finished the meal with pisco, a kind of brandy I hadn't tried before, as a digestif. The whole meal came in under £60 which, given how much we enjoyed it, I thought was a great price. While we were there we noticed that they clearly also operate as a bar. You can just sit with a few drinks, maybe a bar snack or two, and while an evening away. Chatting to the staff we were told that they're open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, which is good to know. As well as a favourite new restaurant, I think we've found a cool new place just to hang out.

We got pork nachos to start, stone cold. The pulled pork tasted just like shop bought pork smothered in bbq sauce, was cold and stringy and far too sweet. The guac was Brown, and the tortilla chips of the lowest quality. Got steak burritos for main, easily the worst attempt at burritos I've ever encountered. Filled with what seems like microwaved rice and pea mix with rare steak. Couldn't taste anything else I would expect to be in a burrito, like guac or sour cream or cheese, or beans. Just rice, peas, and raw steak. Now I feel like a philistine for complaining over rare steak, normally if I order a steak I would ask for it medium. But you just don't expect to be picking bits of raw beef out of the rice in yer burrito. I can't imagine this place stays open for long serving that grub, if you want tapas style Mexican food - go to tooplabamba.

Anyway, I don't know much about Tortilla apart from that it's a chain and just opened at Silverburn, and seeing as I needed to go to Paperchase anyway, decided to go here for lunch. Tortilla is where Aunty Anne's used to be (Aunty Anne's has just moved to a central spot in Silverburn so don't fret if you're a pretzel love), near Tesco/Cineworld and isn't the biggest place - there's a seating area but it's definitely smaller than the rest of the places in the food court/cinema area. The set up is a bit like Pinto/Barburrito/Chipotle - order at the counter and they make your burrito fresh to order, then you take your food and get a seat. I went for my standard order - a naked burrito with pork, sour cream, cheese and mild salsa. They have an choice of rice - coriander or tomato, as well as a few more salsa options than I'm used to but overall the experience is pretty standard. Meat options include chicken, beef, pork or veggies. I also liked that you have the choice between a medium and large burrito. I'm sure the people in front of me were charged extra for sour cream and cheese, but I don't think I was so I'm not quite sure about that - maybe it was just my lucky day (the menu does say that sour cream/cheese are extras). I also got a can of Fanta and it came to about £6 all up which isn't bad for a lunch in Silverburn. I took a seat and dived into my naked burrito. And you know what, it was damn good. A nice amount of pork and other toppings and the rice was really nice (I had coriander rice). A good sized meal, nicely filling without being too crazy and tasty. I added some of the hot sauce which is on the tables too for a bit of an extra kick. All up, I was impressed. They also do quesadillas (chicken only) and nachos but only after 3pm. WHY?! What if I want that for lunch?! So weird. Other things to note: they do veggie options (not sure about vegan) and cater for gluten free/coeliac, and the chicken is halal. They have a whole lot of literature about the "provenance" of the food which is a bit OTT to me, and while they are a chain they apparently aren't part of a bigger group so try to pitch themselves as a little guy. The seating is a little awkward as you're right near the walkway and I found there was quite a lot of people standing right over my shoulder to read the menu - so don't sit on the outer seating bit if that might bother you (it sure as hell bothered me). Would I go again? Yes - I don't love the food options in Silverburn I have to say, and I do love a burrito so this is probably going to be quite high on my eating options list when I'm at Silverburn.

With the Brazilian tunes enticing us, and the shabby south American decor I thought, why not give it a try? We were seated in a booth in the back area, which I was quite impressed with. The size of the place was unexpected. The waiter was...sweet. He couldn't handle many of our questions and kept referring to other staff members. Perhaps he was new. We ordered a selection of tapas and when our request for table bread was met with confusion we ordered bread and olives instead. The food didn't take long, which was a blessing as by this point we were starving. But we quickly realized perhaps why the food was so quick. I ordered, Brazilian cheese balls, Tempura prawns with an avocado and mango dip, plus some calamari rings with chilli mayo. The cheese balls were quite bready. They are balls of quite tough pastry and a tiny amount of cheese baked into that so the balls were empty. The tempura prawns were done in a sort of batter like you'd get on fish at a chippy, and curled up like won tons, with very little prawn inside. The Calamari rings were probably the best dish, yet even they were quite chewy. The bread! Even the bread and olives was off. The bread itself was fine, mediocre, but the olives. They only sent green ones which I was a little miffed about but could accept it. They weren't pitted! I nearly cracked a tooth on one nibbling into it. I wanted to try and have something good to eat to write about so I ordered some Churros and chocolate dip. What could go wrong? Crunchy churros that's what, crunchy churros. It wasn't okay. Overall just a really poor excuse for food. I realized after we'd ordered that it's probably aimed at students, but I still don't think that's an excuse for poor quality. They didn't end up charging us for the bread and olives, but at that point there wasn't much they could have done to soften my opinion. I've heard it's good for a drink on a night, and maybe thats so, the music was very funky. But avoid the food.
