Damn, this place is cool…read more Revolución de Cuba was one of many bars on my list that I needed to visit while I was in Glasgow. Located on the bustling Renfrew St. this place is hard to miss. The minute you walk in you feel like you're walking into a modern Latin American restaurant - sexy, dark, colourful are all the adjectives that are popping out at me. We came in on a Saturday night and it was busy, busy, busy. People were dancing, professional dancers were in full costume, every table was full, and all the guests looked happy taking down their fancy cocktails. The one downside of it being busy? It was hard to get a drink from the bartender. But once we got his attention, he was quick to serve. Our trip was short and sweet, since we had many other bars we wanted to visit this night. One drink and we were out of there. I would definitely come back for more drinks and dancing though. They also have a food menu that looked quite good, but unfortunately I didn't try anything. Good music, good vibes, good drinks. What more could you want?

The décor is okay, functional as much as interesting, there is a nice selection of spirits, especially rum, and I suspect that the tables can be cleared for salsa, gigs etc. The food and service though was slightly disappointing. Not that our server wasn't chatty or pleasant, the exact opposite in fact, it's just that the food took a while to arrive. Again, the menu is slightly disappointing too, there is very little on there that is specifically Cuban, in fact most of it would not be out of place in a Spanish tapas bar. I ordered albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce), sticky chicken skewers, and the roasted chorizo. It took a while, when it did come though it was all tepid, it just wasn't warm enough, unlike my partner's, hers were all fine, but then again she didn't get the Gambas Pil Pil she wanted nor the tea at the end because it was taking too long! The roasted chorizo was great, a nice smooth chorizo with a really tasty red wine, honey and onion sauce. I also had some of my partner's Cajun cream mushrooms and they were creamy, spicy and properly warm. Nice large olives too. The meatballs were not bad, quite tasty, although I personally like them firmer, and the tomato sauce wasn't broken down enough, meaning it was separated and it certainly didn't coat well. The skewers weren't "sticky" enough, making them a little drier and the lime and honey flavour not as intense as it could have been. I'm sure it'll get better, these are no doubt just teething problems, but on the basis of this visit it's a three.

Traveling through Scotland we've been amazed at all the Mexican food restaurants. After a terrible plate of natchos, we've avoided them until last night. The lure of a margarita brought us in to this place that serves water out of Jose Cuervo bottles. The ambiance was lively and had the bright ceramics of our home town neighbor. Ben, our waiter, was wonderful-calmly dealing with our concerns and bringing us dishes one at a time. We started with fish tacos which were delicious and had slices of Serrano peppers. The spiciness was welcome. We had prawn tostadas that I would order again without hesitation. Quality of the prawns was excellent. The spirit of Mexican cuisine was in these dishes although they were different than the Mexican food we've had in Mexico and in San Diego. The calamari was a stretch for being Mexican but tasted great. We were disappointed to not have the margarita rims salted and the avocado was barely adequate for us but otherwise this place is great for Mexican food in Scotland.

I'm not sure on the opening times but when I do walk past there are no customers in view, maybe they are late eaters. Like the last place that was here it's too full on with bright colours, and they seen to have concentrated more on that than the style of food that they are trying to aim for. There is a menu deal on three tapas for £4.00, but that is only served during certain hours, I chose three items at £3.95 each Calamari, chicken wings & some potato dough ball things. With all, the items that l had I would have said that they where all bought in items and not home made, maybe it's because they are still looking for a chef. The food was ok, it was passable, I will try again at a later date.

With the Brazilian tunes enticing us, and the shabby south American decor I thought, why not give it a try? We were seated in a booth in the back area, which I was quite impressed with. The size of the place was unexpected. The waiter was...sweet. He couldn't handle many of our questions and kept referring to other staff members. Perhaps he was new. We ordered a selection of tapas and when our request for table bread was met with confusion we ordered bread and olives instead. The food didn't take long, which was a blessing as by this point we were starving. But we quickly realized perhaps why the food was so quick. I ordered, Brazilian cheese balls, Tempura prawns with an avocado and mango dip, plus some calamari rings with chilli mayo. The cheese balls were quite bready. They are balls of quite tough pastry and a tiny amount of cheese baked into that so the balls were empty. The tempura prawns were done in a sort of batter like you'd get on fish at a chippy, and curled up like won tons, with very little prawn inside. The Calamari rings were probably the best dish, yet even they were quite chewy. The bread! Even the bread and olives was off. The bread itself was fine, mediocre, but the olives. They only sent green ones which I was a little miffed about but could accept it. They weren't pitted! I nearly cracked a tooth on one nibbling into it. I wanted to try and have something good to eat to write about so I ordered some Churros and chocolate dip. What could go wrong? Crunchy churros that's what, crunchy churros. It wasn't okay. Overall just a really poor excuse for food. I realized after we'd ordered that it's probably aimed at students, but I still don't think that's an excuse for poor quality. They didn't end up charging us for the bread and olives, but at that point there wasn't much they could have done to soften my opinion. I've heard it's good for a drink on a night, and maybe thats so, the music was very funky. But avoid the food.

The restaurant itself was quite nice. It's right in the heart of Glasgow just down the streets from all the shops and bars. Staffs were all welcoming which is a major priorities at restaurants. Drink wise, it was a full bar so anything you would like they had. Started off with 2 margaritas which was quite nice. And for starters, chicken katsu which you would never see on the menu at a traditional Mexican restaurant. It was quite nice, good crunch and nicely battered. For entrees, still odd but the katsu dinner served with rice in a sauce with scallions garnish. It was quite tasty to say. Also, the fajitas platter which was ok. Nothing major to rave about but it was good. It wasn't sizzling on a skillet how the states serves it. The way it was presented was meat on one tray, another tray had the sides of sauce of sour cream, salsa and guacamole. And the last was the tortillas. Portions of meat and grilled veggies were very skimpy. Other dishes that were ordered from our group was a taco platter which came as a build your own tacos. Three different meats, tortillas and the condiments. Even some of the starters had nothing to do with Mexican food. I guess you have to add traditional items at different restaurants to please everyone. Not saying I'm a connoisseur of Mexican food but having loads throughout Mexico and the states, it was just ok. I can say I finally tried it.

Our family had to leave after only receiving about half of the items we ordered after waiting for an hour. My mother paid for all of the food, really shouldn't have, should have only paid for what was served. The food that was served was mediocre at best. I had the beef tacos and they were really flavorless, mostly just the flavor of the corn tortillas. The portion of lettuce and cilantro was wilted and browned, clearly had been sitting out for days. The nachos my daughter ordered were stale and the cheese looked like it came out of a bag vs freshly grated(you can tell because anti-caking agent in a bag of shredded cheese doesn't melt together like it would freshly grated). My wife received the tortillas and salsa for her fajitas but the beef never came. We had to retrieve our own menus, order our drinks(server didn't ask). The ambience is ok for a basement restaurant, it could be greatly improved. The biggest improvement would be getting rid of the small bar, it seems useless. This would provide more table space. They definitely need an additional host/server. And then some formal training on basic restaurant service, even an online course would likely greatly improve things.

Overall service was good - very friendly team. The ambiance was nice - i like these quiet little places that are simple. i give that a 4/5 as well Sadly the food fell flat. we had several things on the menu - most of which was lackluster. Yuca Fries and Croquettes were not fresh - they taste like they had been fried the day before an warmed up. nothing crunchy about it - just chewy and not very flavorful. The mini cachapa was good - nice and gooey in the middle. The quesadilla looked like it was made by a 14 year old in the kitchen... bland... zero flavor... it didnt taste bad but then again it was just cheese and a tortilla folded in half. the beef tacos were not very good - the beef is overcooked and they dont let teh beef strain before loading the thick corn tortilla. they didnt add anything to teh tacos but the beef - and the beef was too salty. the saving grace were the arepas - however the plantain and feta arepa needs to come with some sort of sauce. the chili beef one was good... the best part about the arepa's were how fresh they tasted and how filling they were. Overall for the price - its not half bad. Im sure after a few beers it would be a great way to sober up and is probably fine for some takeaway now and again.
