Great place to hang out and enjoy some tasty late-night bites. We've enjoyed several lavash wraps including the chicken, cheese, and Jalapeno with Cajun chicken, cheddar cheese with sliced jalapenos and baby gem lettuce, Southern fried chicken with Maxi's hot sauce, peppers, onions and baby gem lettuce and finally the Halloumi Reuben with baby gem lettuce, crispy O's, pickles, mustard and tomato sauce. The wraps are well constructed and bites of flavor. The fajitas are also well executed and thoughtfully presented. The menu is a bit out there, but accessible to the open-minded. read more

I can only review as a bar as I ain't eaten here... As a bar it is decent, seems a bit rough about the edges in a dive bar type of way, but the clientele usually are ok and the atmosphere always seems pleasant enough. It's got a lot going on, In that there is a club down stairs, food is served upstairs and there is also a lot of focus on it just being a pub. I've been a good few times and it's usually mobbed. I think that's partly because there ain't any other decent pubs on queen street (that I can think of) and it means everyone heads here. In other areas it might not be my first destination, but where it is it ranks quite highly amongst the places I would stop for a pint if passing. Sometimes it even has some unusual bottles of craft beer hidden in the fridges which is always a good thing. Could be a three on anther street, but a better option on queen street, so I will go with a positive 4 stars. read more

Max's is one of my favourite little dive bars. A wee bit tatty, full of charm and character, it's a bit off the beaten track for a typical city centre pub. It's quite dark and filled with a mish-mash of furniture including some stunning gothic chairs. I'm sure it's not to everyone's taste but it just works for me. I've been on several occasions for food and drink but the past couple of years I kind of forgot about Max's. That was until my brother told me to choose somewhere for us to have a good catch up over lunch and a couple of drinks. Max's suddenly came back into mind. It's location on Queen Street means it's only minutes from the train station and the menu is huge so I knew we'd both find something we'd like. One thing has changed since I last paid a visit. You now get a tablet with the menu and place your order by adding menu items to the basket. For someone like myself who spends way too much time deciding what to eat this was perfect as we could chat away and pick at our leisure without the awkward "do you need a few more minutes". Eventually we decided on a starter and main. Like myself, my brother isn't much of a dessert person so there was no compromising like me and my hubby do! I ordered panko Brie fritters to start and fish in a basket for my main. The panko Brie came in an enormous portion and was well coated in breadcrumb. The Brie flavour came through really well and the slightly sweet chilli Mayo dip made sure the strong cheese wasn't too overpowering. Most importantly, it wasn't greasy. Such a delicious, if daunting, starter that I immediately regretted powering through when my main arrived! I was presented with a huge portion of fish atop some very chunky hand cut chips, a little portion of mushy peas and a dollop of tartare sauce. Oh. My. The batter on my fish was a wheat beer batter, incredibly light with the perfect crunch and my tartare sauce was so delicious. The chips were a little on the oily side but they were well cooked and fluffy despite this. Max's isn't the cheapest place in the world for a quick pub lunch, but they do food well and it's a great place to spend a few hours catching up. It attracts people from all walks of life, which I think is a true representation of its unique character. If you get a spot by the window it's ideal for some people watching too. So, yeah. Next time you're in Queen Street, don't opt for chain restaurants. Give Max's a go. You won't be disappointed. read more

Chicken & waffles! Chicken & waffles! I needed lunch and was on Queen Street. I'd had Max's bookmarked for ages but it's an easy place to be put off by as I don't think it looks all that appealing from the front. That's until you pause to look at the menu and see chicken & waffles - then you'll be busting down the door to get in. I took a seat at the window which is probably the best seats in the place - you're higher than street level so you won't have people eyeing off your food as they walk past & it's excellent for people watching. I checked that the chicken wasn't on the bone (nope) and ordered that for my lunch and added bacon on for £1. It comes with BBQ and maple syrup and they boast that they have a special American waffle iron. The dish arrived quickly and it was absolutely heavenly. I can't fault any of it - even the BBQ sauce was nice and I normally hate BBQ sauce. There was a good amount of chicken and the waffles were super delicious. I don't love bacon (controversial) but this was some pretty delicious bacon. All up, it was an awesome lunch dish and reasonable portion for the £9.95. I stayed on a while to get some work done. Staff were friendly and helpful and overall, I liked the vibe of this place. Overall though, this place is looking pretty run down with ripped chairs and the loos were in a bit of a state - it really needs a spruce up. I'd definitely go back though now I know how good the food is so it wouldn't totally put me off. read more

Having walked past this place loads of times and it being one of my guys favourite haunts with his mates, we went in for a drink one night before dinner. For whatever reason, I thought this place was much bigger than it is, the signage outside makes it feel larger than life. It's just a wee pub with a cozy amount of seats where you can order drinks and actually hear what people are saying. We only stayed for one drink as we were meeting his sister for a bit while she was in town and then off to dinner. We both ordered ciders and mine, not usual fancy, was made in to a fancy drink when the bartender added a few raspberries to the glass of ice for my cider. It was a nice touch on his part! Never heard of this place before but I ended up in here after walking around starving in the rain after Waxy's was crazy busy. I remember the place vaguely when it was under different management a few years ago, a sort of rock bar.. but it's alot different now. After the waitress read out the specials we didnt even bother reading the menu and got wired in to some meaty specials. The food was lovely, and a good portion. It came within ten or fifteeen minutes which is great, especially considering I ordered a steak to be cooked well done, and it was indeed well cooked. The music was good and it was a good environment for a nice early evening meal. My only complaint is that it is quite dark so I could barely see what I was eating! I will definately go back, there's quite a few good things on the menu I fancy in the future. Recommended if you're into some grills. read more

I was really looking forward to Max's as I'm a beer lover as well as an appreciator of good American style grub, which I thought Max's was going to deliver on. Firstly, the beer selection is pretty boring. They market the beers as being unique and "craft" but realistically you can get the all in Tesco. A bit more imagination here please, I'd be happy to help. Secondly the decor is very much "dive bar" which doesn't lend itself to an enjoyable eating experience. The food itself was well priced, tasty, filling and good quality. However it didn't live up to my expectations and this I doubt I'll be back any time soon. read more

Max's is my go to place when in town, it never disappoints. It's a great bar with good tunes, club nights and food. A perfect all rounder whether you want to chill or party. Easily my favourite bar in Glasgow. The menu has daily specials and a pie of the week, the pies are ace! I eat in Max's quite a lot and the portions are good, really reasonable in price and always delicious. They do lunch time special deals and two for one pizzas all the time. But its more the vibe of the bar that makes it a 5 star for me, its kinda got an old speakeasy feel, with the decor and lighting. Food is served till 9 and then most nights they have DJ's from 9pm so its perfect if you want a bite to eat and a few drinks all in one place, with the option of staying till 3am if you get in the mood :) Plus a club in the basement, with regular nights and big name dis playing in an intimate space. I love it. House spirits are 2.50 and have good range of quality spirits and beers, no Tennents or Bud in here. One thing you must try is the tequila verdita, which is a shot of good tequila with a chaser made from pineapple and chilli, so refreshing. I've eaten pretty much everything on the menu and its all good and theres something for everyone, which helps if going out in a group. My favourites on the menu include the veggie fish fry (deep fired halloumi), the haggis and black pudding fritters, the amazing cheese board that comes with frozen grapes (sounds weird, works well) and the louisiana chicken. On this visit they had american style waffles with bacon, they were fantastic! I hope they make the leap from the specials board to the menu. read more

Over the years, this building has gone from RG's, to Twisted Wheel, to its current occupant: Max's. I must say, I had to look twice at the big red sign outside, as at first I read it as XMAS, since it's the festive period and all. Anyway, I decided to try it out and I was very pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend and I were welcomed in out of the cold, into this warm and cosy candlelit atmosphere, filled with big oak and red cushioned booths and gold gilt edged mirrors on the walls. I felt like the place had a kind of Bugsy Malone vibe, with the low lit bar lined with cocktail glasses and the ornate furnishings and decadent decor. The music is a very chilled out mix of ambient hiphop and eighties synth pop, providing the perfect backdrop for this hip American style bar and restaurant. I ordered fish and chips, with a side of coleslaw; my other half opted for southern fried chicken and chips in a basket. I must say, he had major plate envy when my meal arrived, with a huge big beautiful battered fish nestled on top of a huge pile of chunky chips, with a lovely side salad and pot of coleslaw. Quite possibly the best fish and chips I have ever tasted, with lovely crisp batter and tender flaky cod that almost melts in your mouth. My jealous fellow was quite chuffed with his dinner too, declaring that the chicken was amazing and that the herbs and spices were much better than the colonel's. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening here, with delicious dishes, gorgeous surroundings and genuinely friendly staff; it even encouraged me to leave a generous tip of two quid, which is very unlike me, and even at that our meals plus two pots of tea, a coke and a tip came to only £20. I'm intrigued to see what this place can do, as I discovered that they have some pretty interesting club nights coming up too with an eclectic mix of guest DJs. This is definitely a grow-er not a show-er, as my boyfriend like to say...about his penis. It looks a bit rape-y from the outside & on the inside too. It's something about the bin bags hiding the giant whole in the ceiling and the dingy lighting. Don't let the impending feeling of sexual assault put you off though! This is a great little place for lunch or dinner. They serve pub grub but it's gooood pub grub. Think chicken in a basket, pizzas and fish and chips. The star of the show at Max's though is the hot dog special. These are proper tasty bratwurst sausages, not flimsy American weaners (back to the penis again...) served with chips AND potato skins and covered in minced meat and fried onions. Amazing. Delicious. I have to say I went to Max's purely based on the recommendations and reviews from the fine people of Yelp. I am so glad I did! (You people, you really know your stuff) The main attraction for me was the Brooklyn Lager, wanted to try it for quite some time and hearing Max's serve that liquid loveliness on tap just sealed the deal. Boy, was it worth it too ~ Brooklyn is damn fine beer. They also serve on tap a West beer (I think it may be St.Mungo's?) which is also a quality lager. Good stuff. I have to admit I didn't think the food would be quite as good as it was ~ I had the chicken in a basket (I wanted to relive my childhood in the glorious 80's *sigh*), I was a tad disappointed my chicken that evening came WITHOUT the basket *sob* Still this, it seems, did not take away any of the flavour or tastiness. Yum. Well nice. There was me all those years ago thinking the secret ingredient to 'chicken in a basket' was indeed the basket but it turns out when it's served on a PLATE it's just as nice! Shockaroony indeed. The rest of the menu looks great too and I hear their pizzas are rather special. Nice, friendly, chilled bar staff. Good grub and really good beer/lager ~ what more can a girl ask for? (maybe a kitten-petting area but maybe that's just me...) Also I love the neon sign outside in the window for La Cheetah Club. You know what, this place has really gone from strength to strength over the past couple of years. I popped in here the other night for a catch up drink with an old work mate and it simple reaffirmed to me that this is one of the best bars in the city centre. So for this part of town you're either looking at veggie no teeth options like the 13th Note, Stereo etc. All very good, but distinctly hipster ridden (says the waist coated, bearded one) and teetering on the brink of disappearing up their own arses at any point. Now I have to state, them places? I love them. The above aint' a criticism, as I too circumnavigate the oft treacherous seas located of the coast of 'up yer own arse' land at times. Other options in the centre include kick bottom old yin pubs (oh shine a light on the one they call The Pot Still!) or mad as a pissed of steroid ridden pit bull with an itchy arse type bars where a 'you lookin at ma burd?' will see you entering a stereotype with more teeth than you'll end up leaving with. So when hunting for somewhere that sits nicely in-between all these joints, somewhere that does great beer, great spirits, great grub, decent tunes, decent service (staff are just the right side of aloof) and a decor which says 'bitch, I don't even need to try', this is really just the ticket. Max's Is somewhere I seem to always forget about and I think it is down to location. It sits smack bang right on the middle of Queen St. Some would say it a perfect location but I always find myself the other side of town when it comes to nights out. It was a Friday we had a table reserved as there was a big group of us. We booked for 10 but the table provided would definitely not fit 10 people luckily we were not there for a evening meal. So yes book ahead of you want a table. As someone the party were eating there was table service for drinks - Which was pretty decent. In past I have always had in my head that it was an expensive bar but 2.50 for a spirit was alright.. The food looked like decent pub grub. I'd have not objections to eating in there. Max's has a really cool vibe to, laid back casual and good music. One to watch out for when down that end of town!! read more

There's nothing wrong with Max's as a bar. I SAID, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH MAX'S AS A BAR! It's just not great if you want to sit and chat as a group. It can get so noisy that you can only really hear the person next to you. I chose it for a meal and drinks out with friends. I thought, at 7pm it'll not be too bad for chatting before the drinkers really start arriving. I was wrong! Anyway, not to worry. We had booked a table for 10. I had been called by staff half an hour before to check we were still coming, which was fair enough, but then, when I arrived, thought it was dead odd that some of our chairs were missing and a random couple were also sitting at one end of the table. Awkward. I chose Max's because it had a relaxed and varied menu like pizza, fish and chips, fajitas and burgers. I had the 'buy two get the cheapest free' deal on pizzas and was disappointed. The pizza dough was rolled so thinly that it was hard and crispy and difficult to cut. The margin of profit would surely still be good if the dough was a bit thicker! My topping was nice but, then again, I chose it myself! Everyone else said their burgers/steak/fajitas were ace. The waiter was looking for feedback so who knows if mine will make a difference but I haven't been put off coming in again. read more

This is more of a review for the club side of things than the food I'm afraid! Since Chambre 69 closed down, Make Do (which is also now closed if I'm not mistaken) and La Cheetah have been filling in the gap in the club scene, although with the Arches shutting down I think it's definitely time for a couple of new openings! I've had some great nights in La Cheetah, mostly techno nights, although they put on a wide variety of dj's. You usually have to get tickets if it's someone big, and pay in on the door if not. Upstairs Max's bar provides an odd opportunity to mingle with people who are there for a quiet few drinks as you stumble to the toilet with bass still ringing in your ears! The bar up there is really swanky though, and can be a welcome respite from the dancefloor or overcrowded smoking area. The space downstairs isn't huge and only has one bar, where the drinks are relatively cheap for a club. The dj booth is opposite from the bar on the other side of the dancefloor, and the cloakroom is opposite the stairway as you come in, so all very easy to navigate and hard to lose people in even on crowded nights. The vibe usually starts off slowly and then gets mental around 1/2am for the last couple hours. It's a well placed club for getting home/to the afterparty in a taxi, with ranks nearby that are somewhat less crowded than those near central station. A really fun club with a nice, happy vibe and lots of interesting underground electronic music acts, highly recommend! read more

Oranjeboom on tap! That was my first thought when I approached the bar in Max's. I haven't had Oranjeboom on tap for years, not since Lanimer Day in Lanark about 10 years ago - there was a powercut to the town, and the only handpulled tap that was still working was Oranjeboom. I only just lost the hangover that caused last year... Nostalgia got the better of me, and I had a half pint of the Dutch headache inducing brew, and y'know what? It was quite nice. If you're not interested in melting the inside of your skull the next day, there's plenty other beers and lagers to choose from, including Glasgow's own WEST brewed efforts. The food menu looked intriguing, the beer battered black pudding special almost tempted me; if I wasn't in a hurry to head off to the West End, I would have eaten here. It's something I will resolve in the future. Decor wise, it's the very definition of a dive bar. It's shabby, it's chic, it's lived in, but above all, it's carefully calculated to look that way, I think. It wouldn't be out of place in downtown Brooklyn, and I kinda dig that. Bumping this one up to 5. This is my go to place for a pint or 20 these days. The staff are awesome. I had just returned from a tequila session at Good Spirits with a bottle of Maestro Dobel Diamond in hand, popped in here to see if they could mix me up a bottle of Verdita to go with the tequila, I don't have a blender. Absolutely no problem. Fantastic. I've discovered, much to my belly's regret, the pizza wraps. Basically it's a calzone with whatever you want inside. Delicious. Max's can get a bit busy at the weekends, which is to be expected, and sometimes they'll put on a DJ, which is kinda annoying 'cos it's not exactly an environment for listening to loud DJ's. If I were them, I'd stick to background music, or have the DJ's volume turned down. There is a club downstairs, La Cheetah, which confuses and angers Wiggles. If there's a club, why was the DJ in the bar? Ne'er mind, that grumble doesn't detract from the fact that this is a 5 star establishment. read more

Oy. Where do I start. We were all really excited to go to Max's for a leaving lunch as one of our colleagues was going on paternity leave. We'd seen some epic photos on twitter of food and Max's was his choice. We called ahead and booked a table since there were 5 of us and having a table reserved for us was one of the few things that went right. We ordered quite quickly and were slightly concerned when the waitress didn't write down our order but figured maybe it would be okay. Well it wasn't. Firstly one of my colleagues had to leave as he had a meeting to get back to and after 45 minutes of waiting we still didn't have our food. After an hour our food arrived, but with orders in-correct (wrong sauces), things missing (no order of lava sauce) and randomly a cheeseburger which none of us ordered (my colleague who left said not to bring his hot dog). It took a further 10 minutes to get the garlic mayo for my colleagues chicken and by the time the lava sauce arrived we were done eating. I dipped one chip into the sauce which tasted like a white sauce where no cheese had been added-not nice. The corn served with the chicken was so charred it was inedible--it is one thing to grill corn, another to burn it. I like to try and find the silver lining in places and the batter on the chicken was nice but it is hard to enjoy your lunch when you are trying to wolf it down because you are already late. We have an hour for our lunch break which should be more than enough except that the food took an hour to arrive. The waitress told us after our colleague left (45 min into wait) that our food would be out in 5 minutes (it wasn't) but otherwise didn't really seem to care or apologize. She never came back to our table and we had to hunt down someone else for the bill. I'm thinking Max's is more of a bar that does food than a restaurant and they certainly were not prepared for lunch while we were there in the slightest. High expectations from other visitors but we will not be going back. read more

I visited Max's last Friday (23 Aug) for lunch with colleagues and was highly disappointed with both the service and food. First, the only positive I gleaned from the experience. I liked the setting. It's got a bit of a hipster/student feel with gig flyers on the walls and an old school American style decor theme. It struck me as a cool place maybe to have a drink in rather than eat food. But eating food unfortunately was our purpose for the afternoon. We got in and sat ourselves down and waited a good ten minutes before our waitress arrived to take a drinks order. She got mine wrong. No biggie. She then came back after another ten minutes to take our food (okay so ten minutes isn't that long really but when you're in for lunch and have to get back to work, the accumulated 20 minutes is not acceptable) order. I always find it worrying when a waitress attempts to take a large order without a notebook and pen but I guess she was trying to give off the whole cool-vibe. It didn't work. The food took almost an hour to arrive, by which point my boss had to cancel his order and leave to get back to the office. This soured the mood of the lunch as we then felt rushed to get back soon after. So when the food finally arrived we had to scoff it down quickly. The food also arrived with a burger and fries that no one ordered and minus the cheese sauce that Ryan HAD ordered. It came eventually but whether it was cheese sauce is debatable. The pizza I ordered is advertised as using the chef's own special pizza sauce but instead was layered with bog standard, jarred passata. The meat and jalapenos were fine but the cheese was uber-greasy, which made the base sloppy. An offer of re-fills came much later but we were ready for the off at that point. Very disappointed but I have noted other very positive reviews and perhaps we caught them on a bad day but frankly, Friday lunch time should never be one of your bad days as a city centre grease joint. read more

I popped in here for a few pints with the girls last week, it was very very busy but we were lucky enough to grab a spot. I think i'm just getting too old, I couldn't hear what my friends were saying over the music, they had a DJ in and I don't think they really need one tbh, just some good background music and a slightly lower level would do the job. The atmosphere was good and my pint of Heineken was ok - but i've had colder nicer pints in other pubs. its averagely priced about £3.70 a pint but when you go for Ashahi etc the price goes up accordingly. The staff were nice but I have to say they had quite a lot behind the bar and we had 6 pint glasses and 2 cans of irn bru on the table before somebody came to clear it and with the amount of staff they had I would expect tables to be cleared more frequently - yes it was busy but it wasn't 5 deep at the bar or anything like that. read more

First time in here for food in a LOOOONG time and glad to say, it hasn't changed too much. Only had half an hour to spare to I hit the lunch menu which is good value at £5. It's a mixture of Lebanese style flatbread Wraps as well as their stable USA burgers, Dogs etc I had a chicken wrap with a warming pepper and tomato soup for a fiver, I was in and out in 25 mins and even with a coffee I had change from 7 quid. This is a cracking wee pub on Queen Street and a good alternative to the mainstream bars that are all over the place in the town centre. Max's has kept the feel of RGs while incorporating a very new atmosphere. Red booths and good old Glasgow mahogany bar top and brass finishings make this place one of my favourite bar interiors in the city. The food is very good here as well. I had the southern fried chicken and chips and the chicken was so tender and the best southern batter I've had since being in Texas! The chips were okay, not homemade. They have club nights downstairs which plays host to some alternative music including a heavy dash of dub-step. A really cool space which is just starting to draw a good crowd so a good time to get down and soak it all up. Unfortunately the bear isn't there anymore! The famous RGs bear has been given a new home, but this space has lost in finishings, it has made up in quality of service and decor. Recommended read more

I've been coming to Max's since before it was Max's and it never really seems to change, which is great as I like it just the way it is. The place gives off an almost rough 'n ready vibe. It's not quite sawdust on the floor, but nor is it yuppy bistro bar. The food is excellent, with the hotdog being a firm favourite amongst my friends. They also have a decent selection of beers both on draft and in bottles. And for a pub with such a central location its prices really are quite reasonable. A great place to stop for a quick bite to eat or an after work drink. My only complaint is that it is rather small and can fill up quick. So getting a table for food can be a bit hit-or-miss at peak times. read more

I loved this place when it was RGs, and it smelled, had cheap drinks and a giant bear wearing an Hawaiian shirt! Twisted Wheel lost it, but Max's has won me back. Food is very reasonable, and my personal favourite is the chicken in a basket. Why you would want to eat at KFC when you can dine in nice surroundings, AND drink beer, is beyond me. Speaking of beers, they have s decent bottles selection of craft ales, with Joker on draught. Staff are always nice and friendly, and the Food Channel is always on, so no matter when you last ate you'll always be salivating. There's a full bar, with promos on Brugal and other spirits. Max's is somewhat of a sleeper hit in Glasgow, but I'm here to shout about its greatness. Known by a cluster of cool, muse-o types, and the chosen few who have stumbled upon it by accident, Max's is a bit of a downplayed Sleazy's and definitely worth perusing if you're looking for some good boozy times. Its decor is very rock and roll, with a few beaten up black leather booths littered around the place. The booze selection is great, with some lovely beers, ciders and spirits on offer. The food menu is equally good, and their burgers earn rave reviews. I have yet to sample them, but on recommendation (and on sight) you can tell it's a winner for a lo-fi dinner. It's known for putting on gigs and throwing the odd club night, but as a place to begin your drinking tour of Glasgow's bars it's a good shout. Max's Bar is the Glaswegian interpretation of the American Dive Bar. It's scruffy, falling apart, needs a right good paint, but it has charm. Lots of it. It's a great place to stop in at after work for a beer, maybe some tasty chilli nachos. Yup, they're nachos, they're mine! The main seating area is raised a couple of feet above the level of the bar. Max's was the first ever pub I went to in Glasgow aged 17. How happy I was to see, aged 23, that not very much has changed. The menu is practically identical! I had a White Russian to drink (at £5.95, it was on the more expensive side in terms of the White Russian market in Glasgow) because someone told me that Max's had the best White Russians in Glasgow- they were lying, because that accolade still goes to Lebowskis. Anyway, so, Max's. It kind of feels like a more grown up version of Sleazy's? I don't know, that's the kind of vibe I get from the place anyway. It's kind of like an American dive bar (but it's still kind of nice...American's really need to come and check out what 'dives' actually are...). We ordered food. Ewan had the famous Chicken in a basket and I had Chicken and Waffles. I didn't read the menu properly and thought it was coming with chips. It didn't. It was literally Southern Fried Chicken and mini breakfast waffles. It was a bizarre combination but I really enjoyed it and finished every bite. The Southern Fried Chicken was great. It was really tasty and crispy. The atmosphere in Max's just felt nice. It was chilled out and relaxed. A friend and I were recommended this bar by someone when we were out for some drinks on Saturday night and I must say I would now class it as one of my top bars I've visited in Glasgow. The bar staff were incredibly quick and efficient and we never had to wait longer than a couple of minutes for someone to ask what we wanted. This was certainly a surprise considering how busy it was! We kept it simple and only ordered vodka cokes and the occasional shot but the staff were attentive and friendly the whole time, not begrudging me when I continually asked for a lime wedge over the line juice shot with my tequila. Kris B. and I settled on here for food after a little shopping on Thursday night, so glad we did! I always love the decor and the atmosphere here; it's what I imagine a 20s speakeasy would look like, with a mirrored wall behind the bar and dark mahogany panelling juxtaposed with deep red seating. The focus here is on good alcohol and good food; they state on the wall behind the bar that you won't find any crappy BW&S here, only the best top-shelp libations will do in Max's! Kris and I chose to have a pint of William's Bros Joker IPA while we perused the menu (a favourite beer of ours). The menus are impressive, not just containing food, but contains a full bar menu, letting you know what, beers, wines, spirits they have in stock, as some are not easily noticed amidst the many bottles behind the bar, which I find very helpful if you're a connoisseur of a particular type of alcohol (in my case: GIN!). The food menu as well is impressive; there's a Southern comfort-food vibe from many of the dishes, with chicken in a basket, hot-dogs, fajitas and 2-for-1 pizzas all day every day (bargain). Kris chose a massive 14-inch Uber hot-dog laden with toppings: pepperoni, jalapenos, gherkins, caramelised onions, lava cheese sauce, mustard and tomato sauce. I picked Max's Award-Winning Chorizo Burger, which is topped with cheese, bacon, chorizo and onion rings. Yes we were very hungry that day... The food came promptly and in we tucked. Kris' hot-dog was a sight to behold, a hot-dog barely visible beneath a gooey flavoursome mountain on top; Kris described it as being "deliciously spicy and messy to eat", so definitely ask for extra napkins with the Uber dog! The same goes for my chorizo burger; the chorizo was a wonderful, smokey addition to the burger, but the oil from the sausage does get everywhere so have plenty of napkins for mopping! As I said, I enjoyed the addition of the chorizo; strangely it makes the burger feel lighter and more summery, evoking a little bit of sunshine on your tastebuds! It also worked well with the creamy, gloopy cheddar and the crispy bacon, and the burger patty itself wasn't overshadowed; it was juicy and beefy without being chewy and smelled so fresh (if that makes any sense!) I felt the onion rings were a little superfluous though; I took them off the burger to make it slightly easier to pick up, but I don't know it they would have added much. Both our dishes came with some crispy, golden hand-cut fries; Kris and I both agreed these were triupmhs with light, fluffy centres! The bill was reasonable as well, coming to around £33 pounds between the two of us. The service was excellent as well, providing us with everything we asked for and more with a smile! I would recommend Max's for anything from an after-work catch-up with friends to a relaxed date with your beau. read more

Both my good lady wife and I. Whilst a wondering in the toon ! Found ourselves in the mood for lunch in the form of pub grub type. Namely a burger. So maxes. It was. First time here. And not the last. It's kinda run down bit ahem !! Well. Lived in shall we say. Any who it's standard pub fair menu wise but food wise. It's not. It's better than average I had there classic burger beer battered onion rings (awesome). And hand cut chips also awesome. Burger was really nice not massive but tasty staff were fine and friendly enough good choice of draft beers to. It's a good stop off for lunch and a beer. Has a nice vibe to it. Try it ! read more

I have dinned here on several occasions for lunch with a few friends after reading a good review on one of the papers. The food does look,and taste like what you would get in America you got the feeling someone did do their research before planning their menu or worked in the states as everything went together (l worked in the states for a few years). If you're shopping in and around Queen Street, and want a pit stop for food and drink, go to Max's. Don't argue with me, just do it. The other half and I have been here on several occasions (and he's got their Chorizo burger in his sights), but I was waiting for my next visit to add a review. Well I'm pleased to report that it's still awesome, and that they seem to have updated the menu since I was last in, always a good sign. I opted for a straightforward burger with cheese, but it was pretty damn fine! Big meaty burger, nice chunky chips, an appropriate amount of salad. It was edging toward the £10 mark, but it was a generous portion of everything, and I certainly ate my fill and left something for Mr Manners. Max's seems to be operated by a collection of trendy young things, all of whom are exceedingly nice, and, to me at least, has the vibe of a business run by a group of friends who one day said 'hey, lets get crazy and open a bar!' This may not be the case at all, but it's certainly not a chain pub, and I admit to feeling the glow of supporting independent business when I go in. If I had two teeny criticisms, it's that it can be quite dark inside, even during the day. Perhaps a dimmer switch or two would be in order? Also, as far as I'm aware, Max's is still cash only, though there are cash machines directly opposite outside. And sometimes it's nice to be forced to remember what paper money looks like. read more

Liked that place! Looked like a true pub! Mature! Grown Up! No kids there (ok yes, I was there) but not all those 18-21year olds. (At least that was my feeling at that night) So a really nice pub to go for a beer, in the merchant city. Thumbs up! read more

I know said in my last review that I would pop in again, but I only just got round to it a few weeks ago, because someone else wanted to go in and I was marvin'. It was dark inside, that was the first thing I noticed. I also noticed the good deals on pizzas, and before I could say 'I'll have a large one', the two men with me lumped in for the pizza deal together. Chivalry is deed, that's for sure. I had the chicken in a basket and fries with a pint of lager and lime to wash it down with. Never let it be said that Stephanie Telfer isny a classy bird. The chicken came, well, literally in a basket, one of those ones your Gran would fill with that green oasis foam and stick fake flowers in. It was worn around the edges, chunks out of it, perhaps where an over-eager diner sank his teeth in. The chips came in another pot, so I had to pick the chicken up like a raving animal and eat it. It was nice though. Posh chicken dippers. I actually found the main meals quite expensive for what they were, a couple quid cheaper and they'd be onto a winner, but they're probably raking it enough with the pizza deal to care. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Staff are the rudest people I have ever met. I tried to buy a Caipirinha and a Blackberry and Gin Mojito and after telling the server what I wanted she looked at me blankly, as if I was speaking french, she then mumbled something and when I said I couldn't hear what she had said she rolled her eyes and walked away. She then came back after serving another person to say "I will make you a caipirinha and a strawberry daiquiri, that okay?" Not what I had wanted but I said "I suppose that's fine" so she made the two cocktails and said "That'll be £15.95 please" and I said "Cockatils are £5.95" to which she adamantly replied they are not. So I showed her the menu on my phone which clearly states both the two drinks I had ordered originally and the two (different) drinks I had been presented with were all £5.95. After pointing out the blatant over-charging she said "Fine, you're not getting served then." Slightly confused I waited for someone else to serve me and not wanting to be awkward again decided to just go for a pint, the person that was serving me was then intercepted by the woman and told to not serve me, he then came back and said sorry I can't serve you, I asked why and he said my manager says I can't. So I explained to him why and he said he's sorry but she's the manager and he can't serve me. I would have left after the first overcharging incident if I had't been there for an event in the club below this shambles of a bar. I can't believe firstly someone so rude is a manager of a bar and secondly they don't even have the basic manners to apologise when they try to overcharge someone and are proven wrong. read more
