Half portion of pork ribs, some beef dishes, coleslaw and vegetarian haggis.

Great for meatlovers! Casual, roll up your sleeves kind of place. We ordered the 'two meals and two sides' - a half portion of baby back ribs with iron bru sauce, 'burnt ends', a bbq beef brisket taster, coleslaw and vegetarian haggis. The ribs were slightly dry but everything tasted good. I particularly liked the variety of sauces available to add more flavour! They do give big portions of fries from what we saw so best to only order one and share! They sell out fast of the pulled pork and pulled beef so we'll hopefully get another chance to try them! Great for a casual lunch.

Excellent food at a good price. Friendly staff and a good beer list. Couldn't ask for much more. The pork was a tad dry, but the Irn Bru BBQ sauce fixed that. House made ketchup was phenomenal and was great on our rosemary chips. We'll definitely be back.

Half rack of ribs and chips.

Food was delicious, I can bet that during the summer it's hard to get! The meat portions are a little small, especially compared to their more than generous chips. I got the half rack of ribs, which normally fills me up, but I could have easily eaten a full rack from here. There wasn't a lot of seating inside, which wasn't an issue for us since they weren't super busy, but in the summer months I could see it being crowded.

I went for half rack of ribs grilled with Irn Bru Bbq sauce and their special hand cut rooster potatoes with meat dust.

I've bought an amazing lamb rack, steaks, sausages and short ribs from here. All of which have been outstanding. Firstly, the sausages. Crombie's are famous for them! And they are delicious. Well worth the trip just to stock up on sausages. Everything else, the quality of the meet has been great. I've recently purchased a sous vide machine so anything that can be slow cooked for hours is going from Crombie's butcher straight into my machine for hours on end. One thing, it's expensive compared to what you'd get from the grocery stores. I've found the quality to be way better but be warned- it might put a dent in your wallet. Great selection of marinades, ready to cook pies and other savoury pastries, and service is always friendly and helpful.

If you mention this place to any self respecting Edinburgh carnivore, they should acknowledge you with a contented sigh ("ahhhh, Crombie's") and a wistful look in their eye. Their sausages are widely regarded as amongst the best in the UK and they supply lots of local restaurants with them to keep the punters happy. There are many different varieties to choose from and they range from the traditional (pork, chipolatas, Scotch beef) to the exotic (boar, pork and stilton is an inspired and tasty combination). Asides from sausages, they do the usual butcher cuts of meat (steaks, lamb etc) and meals for you to heat at home if you can't be bothered cooking. Most of the meat is locally sourced and everything is incredibly good quality. It's just a shame that they close at 5.30pm, far too early for those of us with office jobs.

There quite a bit of tables with guests. I waited a little bit and no one showed up to greet me so I took a moment to take a small video of the dining area and front counter when I hear a lady from behind me yelling at for making my quick video. She demanded I delete the video immediately- I was still in shock that she had yelled at me in front of the other customers who are now looking at both of us. Feeling awkward I told it was just one person to eat here and she sat me down and walked away. After a few minutes, while she was gone in the back, I noticed a few other tables were either waiting to get their order out in or waiting for their food. After some time, I see her walking back to the front, I get up and let her know I changed my mind, that I don't want to eat here so she simply smiled in agreement. Not recommending this place to anyone. I hope if you decide to visit that you have a better experience than I did.

In case you're skeptical, they often have samples--after which, resistance is futile. I've now visited just twice and wish I could go more often. Not only does the barbecue smell alluring, look great, and taste wonderful, but Toby also said what any great pit-master should: "We're still experimenting." Oh, to be a test subject for all those experiments. Food (4.5): Excellent applewood-smoked pulled pork sandwiches (£4) made with local ingredients. Personally, I'd suggest skipping the (tasty) chili jam, which I think over-powers the smoke and pork. The ribs (a new experiment) were great--moist and tender with a good bark (no mean feat)--though I personally would've liked a little more of a smoke ring and a tad more of the delicious barbecue sauce. If Toby starts making oak- or mesquite-smoked brisket, I'll have to initiate a weekly pilgrimage to Edinburgh. People (5): Great people; great service. They know barbecue and will sell you a smoker (or maybe a pit). They're also happy to talk shop... though maybe not to divulge secret ingredients. Side note: I grew up in Texas and have a high bar for barbecue. If you're an aficionado, this probably won't be the best you've ever had, but it's very good and it's certainly the best we've had in Britain. Also, they seem to be aiming to master a range of barbecues. (Right now, it seems mostly NC-style.) It's absolutely worth a visit now, and I'd really love to see what they'll have after a couple more years of experimentation. P.S. I can't believe they keep it up through the Scottish winter. That's dedication.

We had found this place after asking an unsuspecting passerby on the street on recommendations for dinner, perhaps thinking that the local patrons will take us to stories untold. Or perhaps my fingers would have froze if I had taken them out to Yelp. Upon waddling up to the second floor of the building where Shebeen is located, the strong savory smells of hearty slabs of meat enveloped and ensnared us. My dad was dead set upon eating here. The only problem was that the restaurant was entirely booked! (Go make reservations if you don't want to wait!) The waitress told us that we would have to wait about 30 minutes for a table to clear. And so we waited. Thank goodness the locals showed us mercy and a table cleared up a bit earlier than expected. I was starving at this point. But nothing could have prepared me for the onslaught that would come ahead. I didn't particularly feel like digging into a piece of steak, so I ended up ordering a burger. My parents got steak, although they were disappointed that the place didn't serve cheetah and lion meat. (Those were the names of the different sizes of the steaks.) Then came more waiting. It felt like almost an eternity as we watched everyone else vigorously tear into their entrees like a pride of lions feasting on a kill. My burger was enormous! And so were their steaks. The smallest size would definitely be enough for any normal person's appetite. I could end up only consuming half of my burger in the end, not that it wasn't absolutely delicious. The sheer amount of pulled pork on top of the patty seemed excessive, but hey I guess this place is a meat lover's haven. It also came with some potato wedges and a giant portobello mushroom! The mushroom was the perfect texture. However, it was smothered with a mountain of garlic. Good thing I wasn't on a date.
