Cairn O'Mohr is the Scottish wine-producer. They make wine from all sorts of delicious ingredients…read moresuch as elderflower, eldeberry, spring and autumn oak leaf, as well as raspberry and strawberry (and other tasty red fruits). Though they're actually based in Perthshire, they have a stall every Saturday at the Farmer's Market on Castle Terrace. I've bought a bottle of this wine for my parents before, but as they're not really used to wine not being made of grapes, they got a bit perturbed by the whole experience. To be fair, we live in a vineyard village in Switzerland, so I'm sure they were also kind of scared that our neighbors would find out they were drinking ELDERFLOWER wine. Eyes would've widened and reached popping-point. Cairn O'Mohr is big with hippies or green people, who would rather keep their wine drinking within the border because of airmiles and the sort. It's also ridiculously tasty, once you get over the initial but-this-isn't-made-of-grapes reaction. They also have fizzy elderflower wine that's a great choice for a birthday present, or another sort of celebratory occasion. If you're doing a wee tour of all things Scottish (and by that I mean all drinks Scottish), and you've done whiskey and mead, this should definitely be your next choice. The folks working at the stall are always happy to give you tasters so that you can decide which wine suits your palate best.

The guy and I, to top off our date night out in Dundee, ended up taking a tour of Cairn O'Mohr on our way back home to Glasgow. This winery is right between Perth and Dundee so perfect if you're in either city or even Glasgow. It was a gloomy day, perfect for being at the winery. Since we were early (note: I am notorious early everywhere), we decided to check out the cafe for something warm. We sat down and the owner came over and handed us menus. There was loads to choose from, plus fresh made soups to order as well. We ended up ordering the haggis and cheese toasty with two bowls of soup. We were feeling a little raw from our date night the night before, so this food was a perfect pick me up before the winery tour. Once we ate, we made our way to check in to the tour. With our tour we got a free bottle of wine/cider so we were given tickets to give to the tour guide once it started. The tour itself was awesome. The guide was friendly and funny and very mindful of the large group she was taking around the premises. She gave us a history of the family who started Cairn O'Mohr, told us how they expanded to more buildings once they started selling more product, we got a tour of the area where ciders and wines were being made and we got to see the bottling area and where they store the booze once it's ready to be bottled. Once the tour was over, we were taken to the sampling room and literally got about 10-15 samples each (non-acho for those of us driving) and it was amazing. I was driving so I was given non-alcho ciders they had which was great. Once we got back to the little shop, my guy and I ended up buying cider on top of the free bottle of red wine we bought to cook with. This really is a great day out, so if you're in the area or up for a wee adventure, I highly recommend this place.

The whisky is produced in the highlands and matured in the lowlands which is just across the street. I was there last week on a beautiful sunny day, our tour guide Jimmy was fabulous! Young guy, exuberant, knowledgeable, funny and engaging. We were there with a group of Germans, whose English was so-so, Jimmy slowed down his speech and articulated his words to give them a chance to understand what he was saying. The history of Glengoyne was very interesting, learning how whisky is made was cool, seeing the guys at work was an added bonus. The actual tasting gave us insight into how to smell, swirl to see how the whisky coats the glass and to taste different aged malts. They are all single malts here, ranging from 10 - 30 years, although they have a few rare collectibles. The rarest being a 56 year old bottle from 1969. They are aged in sherry and oak barrels. Definitely a great tour & worth the money. The gift shop has all sorts of things in various price ranges also.

The fantastic Bon Vivant's Companion, hosts Convivium Wines, usually on the last Thursday of the…read moremonth. Nikki from Convivium has developed a wine tube map, mapping out different wines, so from the photo for Convivium Wine you can see there are red lines, white lines and fizz lines. The premise is simple. There may be names of wine you recognise, e.g.. Merlot but when you work along the wine tube map, you may discover other lines (different varieties of grape) that you would never consider trying. The tasting is informal and for me this is where the gold stars are. None of this, 'take a glass whilst I spend 10-15 minutes telling you a story before you even get to try it.' Nope you take two glasses at a time, start at the station you want and work your way along the tube line - last night's was reds. Last night's map included Merlot's, Malbec's, Zinfandel, Syrah, Ribero del Duoro and Carmenere and there were nibbles along the way, paired with certain wines, such as manchego cheese, sticky ribs and spicy popcorn. By taking two glasses you can compare what can be the same grape variety but made in different countries e.g.. Chile vs. France. I love the informal style. Working along the tube, Nikki comes along and has a chat and any questions, you just fire away. It is also a great chance to meet new people as once the wine starts flowing as you go along those different stations, the noise level rises substantially and new friends are made over debating your favourite wines. I also love finding a wine that I would usually never consider or finding out what wines work best with spicy food - last night that was a revelation as I would normally stick to white or beer, thinking red wouldn't work as well. So, last night was a trial for how the wine tube map will run going forward and we got tickets at a reduced price. I ventured in after a nearby business meeting and was surprised to be told it had been open around two years, the folks there have added informal, delicious, sociable things like sensory wine taste evenings for a small fee, and bites from Bon Vivant to help you choose combos of food & drink. Seemingly this happens on last Thursday's of each month; exception Feb and Dec. Goodness, I learned things here and eventually bought a large stout(a meal in itself) only because they didn't stock bottled beers and the new festive orange Edinburgh Gin, maybe next time. To ensure that you find exactly what your looking for be it for Sunday lunch, Xmas dinner or New Year or simply to enjoy shared or on your own. I can then very definitely agree that this is one place with staff that can inspire you, and answer many questions. Five stars to them or full marks when I find my favourite tipples on sale, and you never know you might even cross paths with other Yelpers.

So My wife asked the store manager about it. Even though her description was like 'Californian zinfandel with a thingy label and really nice' he actually knew exactly what she needed and he had a few bottles left in the back storage - Ravenswood 2007 Zinfandel - so we took 4 and to fill out the 6 bottle requirement 2 bottles of Cordinui Vintage Cava - Christmas and Hogmanay sorted!

I had great hopes for this Valvona and Crolla, situated in THE department store of the city centre, Jenners. I was sadly disappointed to find it has much less character than the rustic and homey store on Elm Row. You will still find great food that I was impressed by the other store, and perhaps even more as they have an American Food section, with the popular staples such as Pop Tarts and Aunt Jemima mixes and syrups. There is an adjoining restaurant with fantastic views over and beyond Princes Street, and two smaller cafes, one in the food hall, and another on a lower floor by the men's clothes section. The food here is a little pricier than going to a supermarket as would be expected, but for a foodie like me, it's well worth it. Just go to the Elm Row one instead. Nuff said.

Shutup!) We sat in the cafe overlooking Princes Street and I must say it is a nice place to have some food when the sun is shining but the wind is blowing. Lovely view of Scott's Monument and the surrounding area, with the hustle and bustle of the main street while you sit above it all! The service was a bit slow, which I am a tad unforgiving about as there was two people serving and they were slowed down by chatting to a third employee. It's a pet peeve of mine. Apart from that the staff were smiley and cheerful. The price was ok, about £7.50 for what I ordered, which I can live with. A lovely place for a tea or coffee and a quick bite while you shop in the lavishness that is Jenners.
