    Sunday roast
    Elizabeth F.

Yes, it may be a hike. Walk along the waters of Leith before or after and you'll be fine. I made reservations after hearing so many recommendations to try this spot out. I was looking for Sunday Roast and knew they serve it, so I was quite excited to try. The menu has so many options. If it weren't for Sunday Roast that day (pork belly), I'd have tried other options. Service was kind and efficient. We got our food and it was simply so delightful. The Yorkshire pudding was fluffy. The pork belly cooked perfectly, tender on the inside that the meat separated easily. The potatoes crispy. The apple sauce was a good closer, not too sweet focused on the natural flavors. Lovely spot!

    fishcake & cullen skink

This cafe has the reputation for excellent food at reasonable prices. We tried the fishcake and the cullen skink - both were superb. My friend said the cullen skink was the best he'd had in the entire city. The ambiance is cozy and it's worth asking your server about the history of the place - especially what used to be upstairs in the old days.

    The Big Yin!

This was my first meal in Scotland and wow was the bar set high! I had heard about this place for a nice traditional Scottish breakfast and was so excited to give it a try. I ordered the Big Yin and it had everything you can think of delivered piping hot in a cast iron skillet. I must say I was nervous to try black pudding, but it was really tasty and quite enjoyed it! The entire skillet was fabulous but soooo much food for 1 person! The decor in this place was quite unique. So many neat things to look at and the menu's were in National Geographic magazines. Very creative touch. It was the best way I could think of to start my time in Edinburgh and hope to return again before I leave! If you are ever in Edinburgh, you must stop in for breaky!!

This was our first night in Edinburgh and we were quite jet lagged! I found this small establishment in a review on Yelp - I believe under where the locals go. This is in the Leith district, according to my tour guide the next day, has really come along nicely and Roseleaf is his wife's favorite! It has cute china and a nice bar. We really enjoyed the quiet and friendly atmosphere. I ordered the squash risotto (Yum)! Definitely a good place to have a meal if you get a chance!

There is no better place to experience classic Scottish breakfast than one of Edinburgh's very own, Roseleaf. Cafe by day... pub by night... this cozy wee gastropub in the historic Port 'o Leith serves up wholesome brunchies, lunchies, din-dins & munchies! Some of locals' favorites include: Chunky Cullen Skink, which is a traditional Scottish creamy fish soup with chunks of naturally smoked haddock, leeks and tatties; breakfast platters such as The Leafer that comes with award winning haggis, sausages, beans, slow roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, wilted spinach, homemade tattie scone, over-easy egg on top, all served in a hot skillet with homemade buttered toast; and The Big Yin which is packed full of pork sausages, black pudding, smoked streaky bacon, and most of what you'll find from The Leafer. Now that's what I call BIG BREAKFAST! No worries, if haggis is not your thing... there are plenty of other tasty options like ShakShouka, an Algerian dish that can be pimped with half an avocado or halloumi for merely 2 euros; or even more familiar dishes like French Toast and Eggs Benedict. For a cafe-pub, I'd say Roseleaf has outdone the food menu! Bravo!

First time having a Scottish breakfast and went for the Bin Yin... Pork sausages, bacon, black pudding, mushroom, roasted tomato, beans, tattie scone and egg on a hot skillet! It'll fill you for the day! Great food in a really cool old restaurant....

Appetizers are awesome. Goat cheese salad is delicious. The veggie burger tastes like bland Indian food.

Best Scottish Breakfast I had in Edinburgh! Especially good were the sausages and the black pudding. Very quaint atmosphere with great service. The selection of both food and drinks is excellent. Some interesting drinks you don't get everywhere. Try the "red espresso".

Courgette fritters with salad and chips

I visited Roseleaf for lunch with a couple of ex-colleagues. Since it was Monday, we had no problem getting a table - however if you are planning on dining here in the evening or especially weekends, booking is advised. Roseleaf has an interesting menu. Brunch is served from 10am to 5pm which is great as you can still have a more 'breakfasty' option if you wish, or just choose something else more substantial. I had the 'Fancy Fritters' which is courgette fritters sandwiched between flatbread. It came with a salad and chips. The fritters were delicious, there was an appleslaw filling as well which went really well. Salad was nice, but the chips were soggy and I left most of them. This is a great place for lunch or drinks, a really cosy bar with lots to offer.

Sauteed wild mushrooms on toasted homemade bread with poached eggs

We sought this out based on a local recommendation and loved everything about the Roseleaf. Warm friendly staff, cozy quirky décor and really fresh and hearty home-cooked food. It was a blustery damp day (despite being mid-June), and it was exactly what we needed to refresh us. I had the Cullen skink - packed with huge chunks of seafood served with brown bread and butter. Others in my party had the sautéed wild mushrooms on toast (earthy buttery goodness) and the French toast (with an extremely generous mound of bacon). Despite the disclaimer on the menu that the food is cooked to order and may take some time, everything was delivered to our table fairly quickly. We were, however, there on a Monday at 11:30am, so it was a quiet time. They also have a good selection of fresh juices, herbal teas, beers and wine... basically something for everyone! Extremely satisfied with our experience here and wish it was my local!

    Pot tail of fruit tingle
    Louise C.

Ok..... so maybe I am being a little bit harsh with the three stars, but it leaves me open to bump it up after a second visit. In all honesty, overall I was a little disappointed. May be all my own fault, I could have been too mega excited for our Yelp Christmas Night out and it just didn't live up to what I had expected. First of all I decided to show some self control and have just two courses, main and pudding. I was insanely jealous when the Gravadlax came out and everyone was saying how tasty it was. Whilst we were having our starters myself and val decided we would share a pot tail. Yes, a cocktail, in a teapot! Genius. We opted for fruit tingle, prosecco, orange, passionfruit yumminess. It also came with two rather dainty cups and saucers. I don't know if I do dainty well, but I liked it! Then main course arrived, I had ordered the Haddock with risotto and poached egg. Which was fine, I was not enamoured with it, especially seeing the squash wellington sitting opposite me. Wrong choice. Basically, too much risotto, which had a skin on it and was just not the right consistency. My egg was also a little undercooked, but I was hungry! Pudding, Chocolate tart with Ice cream. It is pudding, it involves chocolate, you can't go massively wrong on that. Ice cream was alright, although it kinda looked cheapy quality, that horrible bright yellow colour. But it tasted fine, So my main problems - the main was not up to scratch. I also felt like they may have been a little ambitious trying to squeeze twenty of us in that rather small space. I was on the end of table and constantly felt I was in the way/getting knocked by people walking past. I also would have quite liked Coffee/Tea/Mints/Mince Pies included in the meal, I felt my £20 for the two courses was maybe a little much for what I got. I left pretty peckish.

Nestled (don't you just hate that word?) down by the shore is an intimate little pub that makes an after work pint even better. Nice staff pour nice pints and everything is very relaxed like being in someone's house having a chat and a drink. Everything is reasonably, pub-priced so suits everyone apart from the silly beggars who think you can only have a good time if you throw loads of cash at it. I wish I lived nearer.

    A proper Christmas turkey dinner.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

Today when the Red route took us to old town and I saw The White Hart Inn I said to Jan let's do an early dinner there and she agreed. No hostess, no sign in. We were lucky and just happened to be standing next to a table that opened. We had been there about 5 minutes. The restaurant/ pub is rich in history, established in 1516. It's small with limited bar seating and prehaps 8 to 10 tables. It is noisy from conversation, tosting and music, but we didn't have a hard time communicating. It has a great vibe. It's a fun venue and popular with the locals. The menu is not large and has several Scottish offerings. To start, Jan was cold and wanted an Irish coffee. I ordered an Innis and Gunn larger. Innis & Gunn is an acclaimed Scottish brewery founded in 2003 in Edinburgh. It had a slightly citrus flavor. Jan ordered muscles and I ordered the steak and ale pie, served with a charred Hispi cabbage wedge, buttered mash and Merlot beef dripping gravy. It was very tasty, very robust flavor. I loved the cabbage; great flavor. I had to look up hispi cabbage and it is a variety of green cabbage. The muscles were good and the broth very nice. We had a lovely time and a good meal.
