Really enjoyed this special pub! Located on the Royal Mile, you might easily walk past this small entrance- but it's worth a visit! Definitely book reservations as they are a small pub and highly visited. This pub is literally on the Flodden Wall - very special. Our servers were super friendly and fun as well. They were out of all burgers and quite a bit of other food, so come with an adventurous spirit and ask before sitting down if you have your heart set on something on the menu. Having said that, everything we ordered was delicious- whisky with gingerale, beer, sodas, as well as the main courses of wild boar's sausages with cabbage and mash, macaroni and cheese (homemade, came with a beautiful salad), and steak and ale pie (basically pot roast meat in a flaky bun, with cabbage and mashed potatoes) - all completely delicious. I love love love this place. It's really quite tiny but amazingly inviting! I went here 3 times after work (3 days of work). The Belhaven Black is the best stout I've ever had. Wow. I guess when the place has been here for a long as it has, as well, and been featured as a spot in the Outlander books, it's bound to be good! I am by no means vegan, but the mushroom chili my husband ordered is excellent! It's full of flavor and spice and paired perfectly with the basmati rice and red onion garnish. The fried haloumi is crispy, and the batter doesn't overwhelm the flavor of the cheese. And of course, the beer is good. There is a good variety of draft selections from IPAs to stouts. Grab a tee as well from this less known iconic Edinburgh spot. read more

So pleasantly surprised !! We intended to go to a place across the street and it was too busy on Christmas Day . Instead we ended up here and soooo glad we did ! There is a very small menu (3 dishes to choose from) . The service was lovely, the mulled wine was perfect and both the meat pie and dish/chips were delicious ! I booked a table in advance because I wanted to make sure that I got to experience this gem and they do get busy. I even bought a t-shirt to commemorate the experience. This place is exactly what you expect when you hear old world pub in the UK. It is truly one of the best pubs, if not the best pub I have ever been into. The stone walls, wooden beams and leaded glass are just the beginning. Grab a pint and some of the Haggis fritters and enjoy the day or night. I would recommend to anyone in Edinburgh and will be the first place I go when I am back in Scotland. Staff were super friendly and service was prompt. A very interesting and fascinating little pub with a ton of history. This was my first stop in Edinburgh and it gave me a great first dinner experience in this great city. I ordered the steak and ale pie which was probably the best I had all trip. I also had a side of mash and cabbage which were good as well. The waitress was great and very nice. Cramped with lots of character(s) but if you're looking for a meal (and I don't know why you would here) you'd better call to reserve one of their 5 or 6 tables. The potted crab smells and tastes like a smoked fish spread. Their burger tastes like something I last had in a highschool cafeteria when it was laughingly referred to as a soy burger. It's a great tourist spot with lots of history. Good place to stop for a pint but lunch was a disappointment. We came at opening. It smelled overwhelmingly of fish. We went here for lunch with friends who had been here on previous trips to Edinburgh. It is a old tavern located next to where the city wall originally was, so it was literally the end of the world for city residents. We had to wait for a table, because there is not a lot of seating, so had a drink at the bar. Once seated service was prompt and friendly. This place is not big but it's got the best fish and chips I had in the UK! The fish was huge, hot and crispy without being soggy anywhere, and the house made tartar sauce just put it over the top. The chips were crisp and delicious as well, and the rest of the sides were well-done too. Our meal also included the "Taste of Haggis" appetizer, which was just right for a first time experience. The haggis comes on a bed of neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes) with a bit of gravy, which to be honest, it didn't even need. The haggis was well-seasoned and delicious. If you've ever been to Cincinnati, think goetta but with more of a meatloaf texture. Also enjoyed a pint of Belhaven black stout. Yum. read more

This is a great pub. It is very cozy and inviting. Put our name in to get a table and enjoyed a few pints at the bar. Even in mid afternoon this place was bustling. We had the chicken tikka skewer as a starter which was quite nice. The gf has the fish and chips and I had the haggis pie. Haggis pie was nice rich. The fish and chips were both cooked well. The peas with the fish and chips as well as the haggis pie were fine, maybe a bit under seasoned. A fine place to sit and drink and eat. Even better if you're a Simon Pegg fan. read more

When I came to Edinburgh I knew I wanted to try a traditional pub. The World's End came up in several guides online and I decided to go to The World's End before I arrived. At first I tried to get a two person table at around 9pm on a Monday, the pub was packed and they said there was no space for us that night. It was completely packed and we were understanding. Not to be in discouraged we decided to come again the next day. We came at 5 the next day and even though there was still a wait we were seated after only 10 minutes. All of the servers and bartenders were incredibly friendly and our orders were taken quickly. The atmosphere in the pub was comfortable and cozy, the entire pub is pretty small and intimate but not too loud. I ordered the fish and chips and had an apple crumble for dessert. The Fish and Chips were delicious, it comes with peas as well. The fish was amazing it was soft but not too mushy and the chips were very tasty too. The apple crumble was very good it came with hot vanilla custard that mixed perfectly with the apple. Overall my experience at the World's End was very enjoyable and I would eat there again the next time I am in Edinburgh. I would recommend it to anyone in town. read more

Stopped in while on holiday. Noted that this is a corporate owned pub and many people will have a stigma about that; however, the people make this place. What an awesome staff; particularly Scott, Blair and Alex, that made us feel at home and part of the family. We had an awesome time eating, drinking, making friends and telling stories. This was the first "real" fish and chips I had ever had and now I can never go back to what they try to pass off in the US. I've been spoiled now. You get one huge piece of fish. We walked to the World's End for lunch because it was recommended to us by our tour manager. There were 6 of us initially and 2 more joined us. The hostess had us wait a few minutes as another table was leaving. We ended up in a snug corner by the bar. They were able to seat us all together which was great. We got in at the right time too because we saw others get turned away as the place started to get full. I ordered the steak & ale pie along with a water. Others in my group had fish & chips, burgers, soup, and steak & ale pie as well. Our drinks came out first. They gave us an extra hot chocolate. We notified the waitress and she let us keep it without charging us extra for it. The food came out gradually. I was the last to get my steak & ale pie. It was deconstructed which was nice and the serving was generous. There was a puff pastry round on top of a mass of steak & ale stew along with a lovely helping of peas & carrots and chips. I was so excited to see peas since I hadn't had any up until this point in the trip. The food was really good. I didn't even mind having my chips with malt vinegar but I did see ketchup which made my day. We were able to pay separately which was nice. They take credit cards so I paid at the bar, while others split it up with cash. The service was not speedy but the pub is a great place to hang out. It may be touristy since it's on a street off of the Royal Mile but it's worth a visit if you're thirsty or hungry. read more
