Walked in and we're cautioned to expect a 30-40 wait time for food after we ordered. We appreciated the warning, but stayed as we weren't in a hurry. This pub had table service and they didn't seem to be in a hurry to take our order. Bartender was really fast and courteous bringing beverages. Food was okay. Wife had better veggie burger in other pubs. Their excuse for taking so long for food was two large groups. I don't imagine that those groups (probably tour groups) didn't have reservations, so why weren't they prepared to handle them in a timely manner? Decent pub, but we preferred others. read more

We were a little disappointed that the waitress didn't tell us that the kitchen was done serving, because we really wanted to try the dessert 'Cranachan', which we were told that we should try while in Scotland. This was the first place we ate food at in Edinburgh and we came at a busy moment in the day. Despite that, we got out drink on with Tennants Pints and I learned a bit about the glasses themselves. It was the coolest bar I had ever seen in the city and loved all the decor and dating that the pub had. I was in the mood to be challenged and did I ever challenge myself to a gargantuan burger. This had two fried beer battered onion things, English bacon, cheese, beef, tomato, pickle, lettuce between bricohe buns. MY GOD!. With assistance, my girlfriend had one of the onion rings that shortened the height about a half inch. Long story short, I dominated that burger and cant wait to come back and have it again. The beer is fantastic too and I intend to get messed up at that bar one night. They have music every night and its overall a really cool place. read more

I was dibble and dabbling my way through town, on my stroll I stumbled upon this place, at first I was questioning if it was a good choice for my belittled stomach. As soon as I entered I was taken a gasp by the ambiance here.... A short while later I got my hands on mac n cheese. We were really disappointed with our visit. The roast was dry, and the gravy was overwhelmingly salty--it completely overpowered the dish. On top of that, the service was seriously lacking. No one came around to check on us during the meal--not even to offer water. After we finished, we waited about 15 minutes for the bill After taking our food off of the table. Our server walked by multiple times, made eye contact with us, but never stopped to ask if we needed anything--not even the check. My friends and I were looking for a quintessential Scottish / British meal while in Edinburgh, and George IV definitely delivered. I got to try haggis neeps and tatties (a classic, and by far the best I've tried in Edinburgh. definitely on board the haggis train now), pork and apple pie, and bangers and mash (not sure how they the puff pastry managed to stay so crispy despite the pool of gravy, but I was so impressed). This pub is very nice. There is s big bar and lots of tables. The walls are covered with eclectic signs. Scottish food is the main fare, and that is what we wanted. We started with the homemade ham and pea soup. It was a hardy portion and contained other beans, too. The fish and chips were crispy and very good. The veal and beet pie topped with a pastry crust (my third pie in Edinburgh) was delicious with mashed potatoes/cabbage and side veggies. The service was very good. My accommodation had a contract with them which allowed us to receive a discount which was amazing, BUT be sure to tell them before ordering or they get irritated? Unsure as to why this would matter. We looked many places for a fried Mars Bar and FINALLY found it here! Bar doesn't serve food, must sit at a table to order meals. Get here early as it gets busy during dinner time. I don't recommend driving anywhere in Edinburgh, as it's such a bustling city. Street parking is hard to come by and most you have to pay for. read more

We had Haggis & mashed potato (if you don't think about what's in there, haggis is pretty nice!) and the beef & beer pie. Good selection of ales. Price range is normal for Edinburgh - slightly expensive. :) Close to the castle & royal mile. PS: maybe the best thing - no annoying pop music or radio. They play classic rock almost exclusively. This place was nice, even though it's not the best one if you want to avoid tourism, because the food is pub quality, which is nice but too much expansive. We've had a great time, even if I would love more bread but, because the waiters looked bored and even pissed by our presence, I've appreciated food. I've paid quite much for a simple salad, which was very tasty but it should be less expansive. I'm sure natives love this place for a good party during the week end and I can understand, it's well decorated and the food is really good. No green tea available when I popped in for a heat here on Sunday night but 20+ gins on sale with other spirits all represented in similar numbers. Beer-wise I didn't pay any attention as I wasn't in for one but I expect the make-over has taken that sensibly into account seeing as the idea will be to get customers in rather than lose money as the place apparently did in it's previous guise. The refurbishment is certainly good in terms of the decor as dozens of brewery mirrors and other drink-related memorabilia now adorn the place in a very appealing display. The staff all seemed pleasant and the background music was a good mix of indie & Sixties tracks. Stopping in for a proper drink and to try out the food (an element supposedly key to the bar's rejuvenation) will likely happen in the future. read more

Nice traditional pub in the old town section of Edinburgh that serves up traditional Scottish cuisine. Started with the cullen skink soup which was nice. Had the beer and beef patty which was okay and could've benefitted from some seasoning. The balmoral chicken was delicious and I had no idea, that interesting stuffing in the chicken was actually haggis. So yea, I unknowingly ate haggis. Washed it down with a pint of hard cider. Went here on a Tuesday evening, it wasn't busy and we were seated right away. The staff was very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable of their beer options. I stopped here for some refreshment and food after a day of walking around the castle. When in Scotland, I was looking for native faire. I had a Scotch beer and a Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties entrée. That was my first such meal. I liked the haggis; it was tasty and spicy (I've been cautioned not to look into what it is made of). The bar was classic older style architecture and offered a typical pub selection of draft beers, most of which were Scottish, and a reasonable selection of food and snacks. My husband and I stumbled in here looking for dinner last minute. It's a nice, clean pub close to the Royal Mile. I had the Cajun chicken and he had the homemade pie. The homemade pie was steak and Guinness. (They vary the pies so we can attest to only this one.) Both meals were fabulous! I'm glad we found this place. The steak in the pie was tender and delicious. The crust was flakey. We'd definitely order this pie again. My chicken was moist and tasty. The sweet potato fries were perfect. Nicki served me two of the best margaritas I've ever had and Matt gave my husband and I some quick whiskey lessons. Casual, normal pub. The staff are absolutely fantastic. They are super nice and helpful! The vegetarian haggis and vegetarian bangers and mash is SO good. The fish and chips are also amazing. It's so nice to find a place with so many options for people who don't eat red meat! Their drink selection is excellent, with a good variety of cider and Guiness on tap. Nice spot for a dram or two. I was after the smokiest peatiest whiskey I could find. It's the only type I really like and I manage one about once a year. I needed one and fast. This place delivered on the request. A truly magnificent drop. The warmth it induced fortified me wonderfully for the short walk home in the cool Edinburgh air. read more
