Did an "Intro to Scotch Whisky" tasting and had an absolutely amazing time with not only our tasting leader, but everyone in the group with us. The environment is so welcoming and we ended up staying after and chatting with the other tasting participants for another 2 hours. The food was good. Everything we took was a local Scottish food option and we liked the food overall. It is a nice place to dine-in. We were walking and decided to eat here seeing the vibe and the food menu options placed outside. Later only realized this seemed to be a chain of restaurants. Guinness here tastes nice when I compare it to what we get in the USA. Rightly said fresh brews are different. Never miss to try local drafts when you are in England. My husband ordered a whisky flight and I ordered a grapefruit gin spritz which was so light and refreshing. We shared a bowl of the Cullen skink, which is like a fish chowder. It's better than clam chowder! I would have gotten another bowl if we hadn't had dinner plans already. We were next to the bar so I was able to ask the bar tender about gin recommendations and ended up trying several types of Edinburgh Gin, the Rhubarb & Ginger was my favorite! We had dinner here after a custom tasting at the associated shop. The service was well timed and efficient. The menu offered several vegetarian options including a vegetarian haggis. I made reservations for two here on a Wednesday evening for some good ol' Scottish cuisine. We ended up arriving early, but they had no problem seating us anyways. We decided to share the Whisky Flight (£28.00), Haggis ((£14.95), Cheese Board ((£9.95), and side of Truffle & Parmesan Chips (£4.50). There is a variety of whisky flights to choose from, but we opted for the Staff Selection since we had trouble making a decision. The flight included the Glenfarcias 15, Balvenie Carribean Cask, Aultmore 12, and Glengoyne 10 --which were all very smoky as Scotch whiskey is. A description is given to you along with the drinks to describe the notes, palate, finish, and cask used, which is good for those we just want a taste of the whiskey that Scotland has to offer. If you want a more personal experience, you'd have to make an appointment for specifically the whiskey tasting in the whiskey room instead. Since we were no whiskey connoisseurs, this was perfect. Along with the whiskey flight, we had the classic haggis. After this experience, I have officially decided that I really enjoy haggis. The combination of the heavier texture from the haggis and the smooth neeps and tatties worked so well together. With the additional whiskey sauce poured over, it made for a perfect dish. If you were to try haggis anywhere, this is where you need to eat it! The cheese board was also a nice touch to munch on while we sipped on whiskey. I also really enjoyed the chips here, which were crispy and covered in a sweet truffle aroma. We originally stopped by Makars next door but came into here instead for lunch. Got seated right away. We ordered a whisky flight (excellent idea for lunch btw), haggis, and fish. The food was surprisingly really good than what I expected at a pub. The flights are a great value way to figure out what type of whisky you like. Here we discovered Glengoyne was to our liking. Went on a whisky tour to that distillery. Glad we did that! I wouldn't mind coming back here one last time for another flight tasting before going back to the US. I made reservations online based on the reviews of the availability of whiskey flights.  I am so glad I did. Spicey lamb cigars were very good.  Not very spicey. Haggis, of course, with nips and potatoes.  I found the Haggis a little dry but the addition of the sauce made it better.  Knowing what it is made off, I didn't find it very interesting.   Potatoes and nips were carbs and were ok.  I prefer rice as my carb of choice. This is a great place to try some whiskey flights.  Of the 9 different flights available, I tried the flight of island malts. It included: Arran 10 yr jura superstition Talisker 10 yr Letang 10 yr A pipette with water is also provided.  Great way try it neat before adding a couple of drops of water to ser how the taste changes. I enjoyed all four.  I would have gotten another flight if I did not have to get up early the next morning. For dessert, a plate of four different domestic cheeses.  All were incredible. A great place for dinner not far from the the castle or train station.  Nice thing I noticed was it was not all tourist here, I noticed some locals having a nice night out.  Service was good with a nice relaxing atmosphere. We tried the butterscotch and the gingerbread old fashioned and they were too sweet. But it was neat to try something different. The food however was great. I swear I didn't take a trip to Edinburgh just to check out all that WHISKI had to offer. It just worked out that way. After eating and shopping my friend and I decided to get something to drink but every bar we popped into was jammed pack. There wasn't an empty seat to be found. We left the popular parts and headed down a few alleys and narrow side streets until we ended up here. It was perfect! Now I think I missed something when I first entered because I saw a waitress serve a table so I just assumed there were people taking orders. We sat ourselves and then waited and waited. After awhile I went up to the bar and ordered there. The bartender was super friendly and didn't seem surprised I ordered there so perhaps that was the expectation. I ended up having a couple different whisky cocktails while my friend ordered a whisky flight. I also ordered cranachan from the dessert menu. I have never heard of this dessert but it was incredibly delicious! Raspberries, honey, cream, oatmeal, and whisky combined to make a fantastic sweet combination! I was thrilled! Had an excellent "Highlander" cocktail here with raspberry and local gin as well as the fish and chips. The "fish fingers" were crispy and the fish itself (haddock?) had excellent flavor. I also enjoyed the mushy peas -- so tasty! The chips were crispy throughout, which I was glad for...I hate it when I get soft chips. Truly spectacular food, drink, atmosphere and service I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant. From the moment you walk in (with reservations) to the time you finally give up and waddle and/or stagger home you will love everything about this place. The atmosphere, the service, the drinks, and of course the food. On the drinks side, the Smoked Old Fashioned, Northbank Spritz, and Blood and Sand were all perfection...though if we had to pick a favorite it would be the Blood and Sand. Our kids also very much appreciated that they offered Fevertree sodas and had a pair of Tonic and Elderflower Tonics each. As for food we most enjoyed the nibbles and starters. The olives, bread, charcuterie, Scottish cheese board, stilton and pear tart, wild mushroom crostini, and salmon three ways were all nothing short of spectacular. As was the steak and mushroom pie. And the pair of sticky toffee puddings we had for afters. But unfortunately, and despite my pleading, I couldn't get my teens to order the venison or lamb or fish and chips or even the haggis (which my son loves). Instead my daughter insisted on ordering the Scottish salmon which I knew would be way overcooked for her taste...which it was. And my dear son insisted on getting the Scottish ribeye which I told him would not be as flavorful as he was used to and that it would be hammered. And he ordered it 'medium rare' which meant it arrived just shy of well done. Sigh. But assuming you can avoid these protein pitfalls you and yours will have one of the finest meals and dining experiences you have ever enjoyed. read more

We stopped in for after dinner drinks and dessert and had a pleasant experience. I loved that they had so many different flights of scotch for tasting spanning from the most basic scotches to fancier, rarer ones. My husband and I shared a flight with scotches from four different regions - Islay, Speyside, Highlands, and Lowlands. We had a dessert to go with it and found the whole thing a very pleasant experience. Although we were a bit chilly when the door opened (it was March) and we wished there had been a table away from the draft, that was the only thing that impacted our enjoyment of the space and drinks. read more

They have a nice interior and the food was excellent, but they really need to work on their wait staff who were far more busy talking to each other than waiting on people. Tried to walk in and have a nice family dinner however when a waiter asked how many and I said 4 + 1 high chair he immediately told us it was a reservation only place. I looked online to try and reserve a table and found that in fact a reservation is NOT needed and it states that half of the venue is kept open for walk in dining. read more

Don't believe the other reviews. Came here while walking around one night and so glad we did. Try to make reservations or you'll have to wait 30 min like we did. This was the first place we tried haggis and it was freaking delicious. Moist and flavorful and the sauce that came with it was amazing. Service was great and huge selection of whiskeys and wines. This was the first place we ate when my wife and I got to Edinburgh. It's located near the Waverley station and the Royal Mile. There are three main areas to the WHISKI Rooms - store, bar and restaurant. We sat in the restaurant portion. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about whisky. We started with the loaf of bread. It came with a olive tapenade and oil & balsamic mix. The loaf was very good - warm and fresh, but a bit overpriced (£5.50). I ordered a pint of the Innis & Gunn - Session IPA and the Ribeye. The ribeye was very good "Our Steaks are Scotch beef, grass fed and matured for 35 days." It was definitely a solid piece of beef. The ribeye was cooked to a nice medium rare. The chips were really good - better than any I had in London. With the wealth of restaurants on the Royal Mile, I think it's worth the few minutes to give WHISKI Rooms a try. read more

There are actually two restaurants bearing the name "Whiski", the "Whiski Rooms" and the "Whiski Bar and Restaurant" - the one I'm reviewing here is "Whiski Rooms", with a view of the Sir Walter Scott Monument. This is a superior bar and restaurant that serves modern interpretations of traditional Scottish dishes like haggis at slightly inflated prices, but the food is well-presented and of good quality. Service can be a teensy bit snooty, and Whiski Rooms are a busy establishment at lunch AND dinner times. So a reservation is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment. The decor is modern-stylish and streamlined. A broad range of drinks is available, including a number of lagers and ales - and, as the name implies, lots of different single malts. We initially went to the place next door and had a very lackluster time. Didn't really eat our food, paid and left. We took two steps and turned into the entrance and came on in. OMG this place is a slice of heaven. We ordered Haggis Spring Rolls, Truffle Soup, Lobster Mac & Cheese, and 2 sticky Toffee puddings.
