This is the bland Scottish salmon.
    Maricor Y.

We came across this place on our way back to our hotel. Since we were already thinking of dinner, we thought to try it. My husband ordered the burger and I ordered the Scottish salmon, very midiocre, my salmon was bland as heck and a tad dry. My husband's burger was pretty dry as well. The service was good but that's about it! Food wise will not recommend at all!

The food was good. Everything we took was a local Scottish food option and we liked the food overall. It is a nice place to dine-in. We were walking and decided to eat here seeing the vibe and the food menu options placed outside. Later only realized this seemed to be a chain of restaurants. Guinness here tastes nice when I compare it to what we get in the USA. Rightly said fresh brews are different. Never miss to try local drafts when you are in England. Overall good dine-in experience and staff was nice too. Do note it is expensive and our cheque was almost 80 GBP.

We stopped in for some whisky and dessert one evening at the recommendation of a friend who lives in Edinburgh, and were not disappointed! For anyone looking for some of the BEST cranachan and sticky toffee pudding in the city, look no further than the Whiski Rooms! Paired with one of their extensive whiskies, it was the perfect nightcap!

I think this was my favorite bar so far. The vibe was so nice! We stopped in to grab a small bite and a drink before our dinner reservations. My husband ordered a whisky flight and I ordered a grapefruit gin spritz which was so light and refreshing. We shared a bowl of the Cullen skink, which is like a fish chowder. It's better than clam chowder! I would have gotten another bowl if we hadn't had dinner plans already. We were next to the bar so I was able to ask the bar tender about gin recommendations and ended up trying several types of Edinburgh Gin, the Rhubarb & Ginger was my favorite! Definitely come here to grab a bite and get a drink and maybe do a little shopping in the adjoining gift shop.

    Whiskey Flight Staff Selection.

I made reservations for two here on a Wednesday evening for some good ol' Scottish cuisine. We ended up arriving early, but they had no problem seating us anyways. We decided to share the Whisky Flight (£28.00), Haggis ((£14.95), Cheese Board ((£9.95), and side of Truffle & Parmesan Chips (£4.50). There is a variety of whisky flights to choose from, but we opted for the Staff Selection since we had trouble making a decision. The flight included the Glenfarcias 15, Balvenie Carribean Cask, Aultmore 12, and Glengoyne 10 --which were all very smoky as Scotch whiskey is. A description is given to you along with the drinks to describe the notes, palate, finish, and cask used, which is good for those we just want a taste of the whiskey that Scotland has to offer. If you want a more personal experience, you'd have to make an appointment for specifically the whiskey tasting in the whiskey room instead. Since we were no whiskey connoisseurs, this was perfect. Along with the whiskey flight, we had the classic haggis. After this experience, I have officially decided that I really enjoy haggis. The combination of the heavier texture from the haggis and the smooth neeps and tatties worked so well together. With the additional whiskey sauce poured over, it made for a perfect dish. If you were to try haggis anywhere, this is where you need to eat it! The cheese board was also a nice touch to munch on while we sipped on whiskey. I also really enjoyed the chips here, which were crispy and covered in a sweet truffle aroma. Whiski Rooms is the perfect spot with the best must try things in Scotland: whiskey and haggis.

We originally stopped by Makars next door but came into here instead for lunch. Got seated right away. We ordered a whisky flight (excellent idea for lunch btw), haggis, and fish. The food was surprisingly really good than what I expected at a pub. The flights are a great value way to figure out what type of whisky you like. Here we discovered Glengoyne was to our liking. Went on a whisky tour to that distillery. Glad we did that! I wouldn't mind coming back here one last time for another flight tasting before going back to the US. Booze in the US is just not as good as that in the UK/Europe.

I made reservations online based on the reviews of the availability of whiskey flights.  I am so glad I did. Spicey lamb cigars were very good.  Not very spicey. Haggis, of course, with nips and potatoes.  I found the Haggis a little dry but the addition of the sauce made it better.  Knowing what it is made off, I didn't find it very interesting.   Potatoes and nips were carbs and were ok.  I prefer rice as my carb of choice. This is a great place to try some whiskey flights.  Of the 9 different flights available, I tried the flight of island malts. It included: Arran 10 yr jura superstition Talisker 10 yr Letang 10 yr A pipette with water is also provided.  Great way try it neat before adding a couple of drops of water to ser how the taste changes. I enjoyed all four.  I would have gotten another flight if I did not have to get up early the next morning. For dessert, a plate of four different domestic cheeses.  All were incredible. A great place for dinner not far from the the castle or train station.  Nice thing I noticed was it was not all tourist here, I noticed some locals having a nice night out.  Service was good with a nice relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely recommend reservations here especially Friday and Saturday night.

Love the whisky and the ambience. The host was very knowledgeable about all kinds of whiskeys and helped to choose a great one. I had a great experience there, it is well recommended.

Stopped in here during the rain storm for an appetizer and some drinks. We had a whiskey flight and tried two of their old fashioned drinks. The whiskey was great, but the old fashioned was not. We tried the butterscotch and the gingerbread old fashioned and they were too sweet. But it was neat to try something different. The food however was great. The scotch egg was a little over cooked, but still had great flavor.

Starting with the Highlander -- delicious Scottish gin cocktail!

I don't drink alcohol, but their online mocktail menu looked great, and when my friends made the reservation, the staff confirmed they'd be happy to accommodate me and that I could order a drink at the bar. I was genuinely excited given the variety of mocktails listed. The space is gorgeous, and even without drinking, the whisky selection is fun to explore - the names alone are worth a chuckle. The staff were warm, and our whisky-tasting guide was both knowledgeable and entertaining. After we settled in, I headed to the bar to order a mocktail, and I probably should have stopped while things were still going smoothly. The bartender ended up calling over an off-duty staff member because they were "between menus." He was extremely friendly, asked thoughtful questions about what I liked, and said he'd come up with something based on what ingredients they had. The drink was delivered to me later in the tasting room, and it was... fine. Interesting, with a smoky note - perhaps an attempt to give me a peaty, Scottish experience - but not quite to my taste. When I paid, I'll admit the price surprised me, as my mocktail cost more than a friend's dram of whisky. My friend later mentioned that it also felt like a miss that I wasn't given a cheese tasting tray alongside everyone else, especially since our group nearly bought out the tasting. My place setting was empty until my drink arrived. I didn't think of it at the time or feel entitled to anything, but offering a "no-alcohol" tasting option - a mocktail or NA beverage plus the cheese pairing - would be an exceptionally thoughtful addition for guests who accompany drinkers. As the sober friend tagging along, the experience was perfectly okay and largely in line with what I expected - but with a couple of small tweaks, it could have felt much more inclusive.

I stopped by for a final couple of drama on my last evening on Scotland (09/09/25). There were…read moregreat scotch offerings at all price points, the atmosphere felt upscale, but still comfortable, and the staff were all pleasant and very helpful. I'd definitely return.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

We came in around 3 or 4pm and asked if we could get a drink; the host asked us if we had made a reservation. As long as we "weren't there for food" they could accommodate us. For the record: we were here for an hour, and no one else came in during that time. The whisky options were impressive featuring something from all the regions of Scotland, and we also appreciated their cider and cocktail options. In the end we each had one drink, but genuinely felt a bit disinterested and disappointed by the place on the whole after the hype we had read/heard. We just didn't get what made it THE place to go to in Edinburgh according to so many. We found much more interesting, down to earth, genuine places elsewhere in the city. The cold reception didn't help, but -- really -- what are we missing about this place?
