PCA Chicago was hosted by Bart for a fall tech session about 3 or 4 years ago. After going to one of the more well known Porsche shops with my first pcar, I thought to myself 'I'm going to give this guy a try.' The last shop had a lack of customer service and would down right blow me off. At BTR I can get in right away and get a good explanation as to what's going on. Fast forward I've been bringing 3 of my vehicles there.Two of my pcars have had shocks and springs. I've had complete brake jobs, water pump...the list goes on. And even work on my overland build. They corrected a steering issue a local mechanic told me I was going to have to live with. BTR isn't exactly near me, but the travel is worth it. Also, my truck got a whole lift kit install. I went there for a pre purchase inspection. Everyone was very helpful. They did a thorough job of explaining the work my car would need in the future, and let me under the car myself, to see what they were talking about. They had loads of helpful advice. They also volunteered to work with the dealer directly to have the car transported there, so I didn't have to play phone tag with both companies. They were great. I'd def go back to this place. Finding a good mechanic on the North Shore has been difficult until I came across BTR. Mike analyzed my problem and fixed an electrical issue when I thought I was looking at having to replace a transmission. If I had known about BTR two years ago I probably could have kept my aging Mercedes, instead I took my "old faithful" to the car killing mechanic in Deerfield, who put it down forever. I've been back in Chicago for almost 3 years, and hadn't decided on a shop to service my Pcar yet, as you need to be careful about who works on any vehicle of yours (let alone a Europrean car). However after years of research and realizing that BTR was not that far from my home, I decided to give them a call to get an estimate on some maintenance and repairs that had to be done. I called them up initially and Mike was very helpful, understanding, and knowledgable about Porsches, and even specifically my make and model. It's very refreshing to speak with a mechanic who not only knows about the cars, but the people who own them, especially in the sports car market. We aren't talking about a Toyota Camry needing it's oil changed and timing belt service done, we're enthusiast who chose to invest time and often unreasonable amounts of money into a vehicle that they only drive 250 miles a year...With that said, I was given a very fair quote on the work I needed done and worked with them on timing since it's the dead of winter and the weather can be finicky in Chicago. The work was completed exactly on time and my bill was exactly what was agreed upon, no surprises. Mike and Bart are extremely thorough and did let me know of other repairs/maintenance I would have to address in the future, but again it was an option and just a heads up. Once I got the car back the owner Bart showed me the parts that were replaced which I really like when mechanics do, because it helps you learn about why and what specifically need to be replaced. The best part is that the work I needed done on my clutch slave cylinder was so badly needed, that when I drove back home I didn't even recognize the car cause it felt so much better to drive than before. I should have written this review 18 months ago when the service was done on my car. I own a 2003 Passat W8 which is very rare as only 4k were made With the 8 cylinder engine. I love this car. One drive on the highway and I'm hooked. It feels like a tank. Power, handling and so enjoyable to drive. A 2003 Passat usually came with a 1.8T or a 6 cylinder engines. VW decided to try a 8 cylinder in the same engine bay. Imagine that, a engine bay made for a 4 cylinder and installing a 8 cylinder engine. They managed to get it to fit but at a cost. There is no room to do anything in there. One day a check engine comes on. Took it to the dealer and was told one of the oxygen sensors needed to be replaced. Ok lets do it. The service advisor said the part was $120 but the labor to do the job was $2800. He said to access the sensor, they will have to take the engine out. Wow $2900 to replace a sensor. Bottom line is this, I took the car to all the VW dealers in the Chicago area and called ten other European repair shops and they all said the same thing, there is no room and the engine has to come out. I kept thinking there has to be another way. I kept hearing from everyone who looked at the car that they are following VW's service standards which says the job will take 15 - 18 hours to complete. Now to get my State plates the car has to pass emissions. I had no choice. The sensor has to be replaced to pass emissions. Decided to spend the money and have it replaced. I looked around several European auto repair reviews on Google and BTR popped up. They had excellent reviews so I gave them a call. Spoke to Mike and after explaining what the issue was and what the dealers said, he said I think 8 hours but bring the car in for him to look at it. Mike is a gentleman. He put the car on the lift and in five minutes came in the office and told me the engine does NOT have to come out. Loosen yes but not take out. I looked at him and asked Mike if he was sure since all the dealers told me the engine has to come out. He looked at me puzzled as to why I would as him that question. I felt confidence in this man that told me to go with him. I did and I cannot thank them enough for their honesty and professionalism. Mike, Bart and the third gentleman (my apologies for forgetting his name) are awesome. No more lights and the car passed inspection the same day I picked up it up. My husband took his '07 Cayman S to BTR last year for some significant performance upgrades and he couldn't be happier. The work was substantial and required the engine removed from the car. Bart is the man. Very knowledgable and honest about all cars in general but an absolute wizard when it comes to Audis, VWs, and Porsches. He's helped me get through some tight jams i've had with my Audi and VW. His shop is clean and beautiful and always full of cool projects he's working on. You can show up on any given day and fine a Ferrari getting headers done to full blown monster track builds for people. One habit of his I like as I've dealt through it with experience is that he does not like to use cheap aftermarket replacement parts. Performance parts and upgrades are one thing, but if its a repair or something to replace, he will only use genuine Audi/VW parts, which though it may be a bit more expensive, it's worth doing to save from future potential headaches.
