Looks can be decieving. When walking by this new place, it LOOKS nice. Nice lighting and furniture. But after so many downfalls, my fiance and I will never return. Here is a list of how bad this experience was: 1. Rude staff shoved through people to sit us down and pressured us to sit even before we finished looking at the menu. A little annoying. 2. Nice waitress, but she served me water with DIRT in it. Litterally, the glass had specs of dirt. She replaced it when I asked her to. 3. The Bass Ale I ordered had a FLY in it. In the beer head was a fruit fly, dead, sitting on the glass as she served it. She pretended not to notice and zipped away. I pulled it out quickly, not sure at first. But after picking it up, it was indeed a fly! I didn't drink the rest of the beer and apparently, she didn't care to ask. I didn't want to make a fuss since I was trying to relax with my fiance. 4. After feeling dirty and all the crumbs in the booth seat that weren't cleaned up, I went to the bathroom, which was a bad choice. The door didn't fully close --- so it sits open about an inch. There were more fruit flies in the bathroom flying around everything, the garbage can was overflowing with garbage and trash was strewn about on the floor. It was disgusting. 5. After getting my salad with the wrong dressing, I was tired of complaining. This place just sucked. 6. The dinners - I had chicken, my fiance had haddock - the food was bland and tasteless. A true diaapointment. Greasy and overdone. Clearly no experience in preparing food. 7. Pulling through the bland dinner, we just wanted the check and to leave as soon as possible. The place soon became overbearingly hot, to the point that I had to take off my sweater, sweating from it. We were still waiting for our waitress to get us our check. Instead, she socialized with other tables that she seemed to know outside the place. It took 10 minutes for her to return with my credit card. 8. For two drinks (one with a fly in it), two mid-level dinners and two salads, it came to over $70. For what we got, what a true waste of money and time. BEWARE. Avoid this place - they seem to fully rely on the first impression of how it looks and seem to have zero idea on how to control quality of food and service. Because they are in a busy street, I imagine they are hoping for walk by's to try it. Those people are in for a rude awakening like we were. read more

I came here for brunch a couple weeks ago and there was no wait as there usually is for brunch places on a Sunday. We got seated right away. The service was great, our waiter was amazing and very friendly. He recommended great drinks for us that we're delicious and had just the right amount of alcohol. On a blustery Sunday night when four T-savvy friends wanted to meet up for a meal, Brownstone was chosen for accessibility (just about a block from the Back Bay station), variety and affordability (salads, pizzas, burgers - the usg pub-fare, hovering around 8-12$), and availability (two 4-person groups and three people at the bar.....there was no question that they wouldn't be able to accommodate us for dinner). *Nice interior. Warm and nicely spaced out (...plenty of room!). *Server (Elizzybeth?) was really nice - checked in on us often, brought refills quickly. *Menu is pub-safe (some app's, pizza, burgers, not-so-healthy salads). I selected the Veggie Burger with Peppers :: tasted like every other veggie burger I've ever had: relatively stale/lacking significant flavor (like the patties you keep in the freezer for BBQ's). Due to a minor kitchen slip-up, our table ended up with string AND waffle fries as well as onion rings - - - *AWESOME waffle fries!!! Little fried bits o sin (not greasy, fresh oil was used). *Our waitress suggested the German Riesling "Saint M" (..yum - ordered two glassezzzz). This place has to compete with neighboring pubs (Lir, Bukowski, the Pour House, etc), but it does a pretty good job. I can see myself popping in for a pint and some waffle fries before hopping on the train, but I was pretty disappointed by the lack of effort put into the Veg Burg. After walking out of Clerys today due to rude service I walked into Brownstone right next door and was greeted at the door by the hostess with a big smile. I sat at the bar for my beer and a sandwich. The very pleasant bartender offered me the menu and asked what I was drinking. I told him I was going to have a beer. He offered me a few suggestions and even asked if I wanted a taste. My beer was cold and tasty and my chicken sammy was just what I needed. This is how you run a pub/restaurant!!! read more

Went here on a Sunday morning- place was empty but we waited 20 min at our table and finally asked for service (coffee). Once we had someones attention, the waiter kept asking us what it is we ordered and putting the wrong food in front of the wrong person. I asked for an ice coffee and got a hot coffee...it was mistake after mistake with no apology.The food was good- so it gets 1 point for ONLY that, but with such steep competition in the area they really need to work on service. I got the egg quesadilla and it was delicious- home fries were decent and my friends enjoyed their meals ad well. At least 3 workers saw us waiting and even though it's not their table you would think they could still acknowledge us. It takes a lot to make me upset but I was ready to walk outta here. I've heard good things and was excited to try it out. I went here with a super picky eater but she had a ton of options as they have a lot of the standard brunch items/nothing too crazy. She got the combo with french toast and it came with three big pieces of toast, such a good deal! (Plus eggs, meat, and toast). I got the duck and sweet potato hash because I do like trying new things and it was excellent! I loved the sweet potato instead of the standard potato. It also had plenty of duck which was great. Why do I bother ever going to this bar? Probably because I forget how lousy it is until I'm there. Every time I go, I get terrible service. Well, more like no service. This afternoon, I had some time to kill before an audition nearby, so I stopped in. There were only four customers at the bar. Waited about ten minutes and the bartender just didn't care I was there. Just strait up didn't give a shit. Just before walking out, a waitress came out of the kitchen and saw me awkwardly sitting there and took pity on me and yelled to the bartender to get me a drink, heh. Do not waste your time with this restaurant! I went there with several friends after running an early morning race in the city. We were the first of five tables to be seated right when it opened at 9am, and they could not have been less prepared. Perhaps they weren't expecting an early morning crowd, but it was the Sunday of marathon weekend and the Sox were in town. I understand if they're understaffed, but be honest about it and tell us the service is going to be extremely slow so we could decide to go elsewhere. Our waitress was rude to us from the moment we sat, and rarely checked on us. We ordered food at 9:15am, and did not receive it until 10:30am. I understand that it was busier than normal, but it wasn't as though she was waiting on 20 tables...there were only 5 tables at the time. Our food was also cold when we finally received it. Even after more help arrived, the service was still extremely slow. I used to go here from time to time, but will never visit it again! read more

After calling ahead for reservations they told me they could not take reservations for 45 minutes ahead. then when we got there to see the wait time the couple in front of us said " i have reservations and they were instantly seated, i guess you need to know someone here to get reservations. After the host told us it will be a 45 minute wait and told us we could get the same food next door, which he clearly lied about because you are not able to. They were happier to rush us out the door than take in patrons. My wife and I were really interested in trying this place and after such a crappy experience with the host staff I think we will end up skipping this place and not recommending it to other. read more

There's a joke a few of my coworkers and I have that every dish at Brownstone is something perfectly normal with one random component that you would never in expect; and they seem to put plantains in everything. Not that I mind too much, it's just a little odd. I work about a 20-second walk from here, though don't go nearly as often as I'd expect. Good place for after-work drinks, though I would never suggest to go there to "have dinner" with friends, and I can't exactly put my finger on why. But there's a decent beer selection and the food is okay. I think the service is pretty great though. When we decided to put my manager's beer in a martini glass full of cherries while he was in the bathroom, they were very accommodating and even seemed to enjoy playing along. They were slightly less enthusiastic when we decided to pour another guy's beer into eight different shot glasses (with the remainder somehow on the table). But they're a congenial bunch overall. read more

This is one the worst places I've ever been to. While having dinner with a friend we saw a baby mouse run by. We did not panic, just thought one ran in since we are in the city and the door were open. But 20 minutes later we saw 3 all together, running around while we had dinner. So I freaked out and when we told the hostess he just looked around and said nothing. Two other couples also noticed and left right away. The health department needs to shut this place down! I live very close to Brownstone and Clery's. However, it's always the latter that I find myself going to. Amazing how people always spend 20-30 minutes waiting in line for Clery's when right next door there's no line at all! Anyway, I guess I always added to that since I never found myself there until this past weekend - that too, only during brunch hours. Hence, I can only speak as far as their brunch is concerned. And the verdict is pretty good! I'd been moving this entire past weekend and just could not bare to look at uncooked fresh ingredients and a stove top - when ordinarily, my cheap self would suck it up and just put something together. Seeing this establishment's brunch ad outside definitely gave me incentive and I took the plunge - my roommates and I were seated at a great table with open windows and as it was beautiful outside, it turned out to be perfect. All 3 of us got the brunch menu and without speaking to each other about what we were going to order (because in all honestly, we were just that tired...even sentences required energy and we were all about conserving) we ordered the same thing. Omelet with spinach and feta with home fries and english muffin/wheat bread. Large portion and well cooked. It was exactly what we wanted. The service was good too and the food came out fairly quickly. The total bill (with tip) was 30 bux! I'd certainly go there again....for brunch. read more

Great brunch spot! It was easily accessible from the T, which was good because it was sweltering today. I would recommend making reservations (they take open table). It was pretty packed! I started with the house Bloody Mary. It was ok, not the best I've had, but decent. I love horseradish but there was quite a bit in this one! I had the corned beef hash with poached eggs. It was delicious. Crispy edges of corned beef with the yolk running over it! I liked how they served the hollandaise on the side in a little ramekin. Then a server came to the table on one side of us, skipped over us and checked on the table on the other side of us. There was hardly anyone in the place so we finally got up and left. Went today for Sunday brunch and I can't stand how slow the service is here! It's a bit ridiculous if you ask me. Waitress didn't come to greet us for over 15 mins and took another 15 mins for drinks. We decided to immediately order our food when the drinks came knowing by then we would never know when our waitress would be back. Food came out at an ok rate but no ketchup or syrup brought to us. We asked when our waitress came to the table 10 mins later to check on the food and then she came back another 10 mins later and still forgot the ketchup and syrup. By then our food was cold. It then took forever to get our plates cleared and to get our check. Now for the food, I got the breakfast combo. French Toast was really good but eggs and bacon were just that and didn't care for the mushy home fries. My mom said she had better corned beef hash and my son didn't care for the steak tips which we had asked for medium but some were more medium rare. Definitely not a place to run back to but we were in the area for a play and wanted to grab brunch close by. Thank goodness I allowed extra time when booking our reservation because we would've been late to the play. read more

I'd agree with most and say it was decent. We were seated right away, and our waiter was very attentive and polite. I didn't find many menu options that were to my taste, but a caprese sandwich was adequate. I don't get why places like this do not have a veggie burger option, it's easy to make (or even just buy) and opens up a good portion of the menu to us herbivores. The garlic waffle fries were deliciously crisp with a perfect balance of greasyness. The house salad that accompanied my sandwich was nicer than I expected, and was much more than iceberg lettuce and grape tomatoes.
