I won't give Brownie Points five star only bc I've only tried one cupcake from their shop but trust me I'll be back for seconds. I initially read about Brownie Points on the Munchmobile blog (the Newark Star Ledger's summer review NJ food). Although the munchmobilers favorite of the day was the Sugar & Sunshine Bakery (which happens to be minutes away from me), after visiting Brownie Points, I'd have to disagree. The shop itself is absolutely adorable. It's so small that they only have space for a display counter but the bright colors are warm and welcoming. Their selection was a little sparse that day. They were out of duffins (a muffin/doughnut hybrid that was popular amongst the munchers) and only had a few flavors of cupcakes --vanilla, chocolate and red velvet. I only tried the chocolate ( it had vanilla buttter cream icing and dyed-pink coconut flakes). I usually prefer to try less traditional flavors but I was infinitely impressed by this cupcake. It was so amazingly moist and rich which a consistent smooth texture from the first bite to the last. I couldn't believe how good it was. Plus, the butter cream was my ideal amount of sweet. I only wish there was more! To top it all off, It's located in the impossibly cute and picaresque town of Summit. read more

This is a very cute cupcake shop with a friendly staff. The cupcakes are a bit dry but passable. Definitely worth a visit.

First time there and kinda disappointed. Everything on the counter looked kinda old (I did go on recent Monday) so I got the banana pudding. It looked way better than it tasted- it was mostly a dark caramel sauce with a heavily flavored vanilla whipped cream , a small vanilla wafer I think and two slices of banana. Two. Not great for $5. I agree with berengere. They seem to put so much emphasis on decorating the store. The cupcakes are average at best and they can be dry and quite expensive. Moreover, they don't really sell much else. Sometimes the store looks a little empty to me. My barometer for cupcakes is Two Little Red Hens in Manhattan. I have yet to see anyone even come close to their flavor let alone their decoration which are a work of art. It's hard to imagine how they can make such gorgeous cupcakes. Brownie Points is a little shop with adorable store decorations. It redecorated for every season or major holiday throughout the year. This store is located at a perfect location, right in the center of town, across the street from the train station. They have quite a variety of baked goods all made from scratch. All of their products are made with farm fresh fruits and vegetables baked fresh daily. If there is anything left over at the end of the day, they donate their items to local food banks. Their Macarons are phenomenal with the different flavors changing depending on the season. At this time of year, they have raspberry (which is my all time favorite!), chocolate, vanilla, mint, and passion fruit. Every time I try a new flavor, it's like I'm tasting one directly from France. The duffins are definitely something you need to try if you haven't done so already. Each flavor has a little something special about it: the lemon glazed has a little piece of lemon inside to get that extra quench of lemon needed, the cinnamon sugar has a little drop of cinnamon inside, while the coffee cake duffins have a drop or brown sugar, the raspberry has a squirt of raspberry jam that is quite delectable, and the chocolate has bits of chocolate pieces inside. The cupcakes are adorably delicious as well. They have cupcakes of the week ever so often. The week that I stopped in they had chocolate pretzel cupcakes, very rich in flavor, if you love chocolate as much as I do. Creme brûlée cupcake is definitely worth trying, as well as the red velvet. All their cupcakes are decorated very carefully to have a beautiful presentation in the store to grasp people's eyes. If you are in need for a Brownie points fix on a Sunday, be sure to stop at their stand at the Farmer's market! They have plenty of sweet and savory selections to choose from. Anywhere from habanero and cheese corn bread to a summer fruit pie in which contains plums, peaches, and nectarines! read more

This place is adorable, it smells like butter and vanilla when you go inside. The cupcakes are special - they are moist and flavorful. The Duffin was good! It's like a dessert bread - or a dense cake. Very delicious. The sugar cookies were good, but I would say it's the least exciting thing we bought today - maybe since it is such a simple dessert compared to the other things. But Maybe it could use a bit more sugar in the batter? I don't know, the kids didn't complain so that's a plus. The Macaroons were really tasty - very very flavorful, and I love the colors! A couple of them were a tiny bit hard rather than chewy but still super good and loved how much flavor there was!! Everything there looks beautiful. Duffins are delicious - my favorite is the lemon but have also enjoyed the cinnamon and jelly. Chocolate isn't as good to me. Cupcakes are variable - I enjoy the mint chocolate but wish the cake weren't as dry as it is. Lemon raspberry, which they've only have one time I've been there, was my favorite - moist and delicious. I didn't love the red velvet - I prefer a less sweet frosting and again it was dry. Plain vanilla is pretty good. Brownies are good. Croissants are tasty with plenty of butter, but I find they are usually a little overbaked for my taste. I once tried a scone - dry and would not get again. Staff has always been friendly. read more

Since opening, they have really expanded their offerings, however, their "bread and butter" offerings (cupcakes, duffins, whoopie pies) are st ill there. Most reviews mention only having a few cupcakes i.e. chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet (the best in the area, bar none), which is shocking considering I have never been with no less than 6 different flavors. Some of the flavors rotated weekly, while there was also a flavor of the week including flavors such as: mint chocolate chip, creme brulee, oreo, sno-balls (those cakes from childhood covered in marshmellow and pink coconut flakes), "Hostess funny bones and white swirl cupcakes," strawberry (made with real strawberries in the cake and icing), Baileys, and my personal favorite an outstanding coffee/mocha. The cake on the vanilla cake seems to be a bit moister than the chocolate due to the ingredients these, which includes decadent European chocolate, Madagascar vanilla, and a butter with a higher fat content (I know because I've asked). Many of these flavors are also available in a cake. Now for the other offerings, the real stars are the "Duffin" and whoopie pies. As previously mentioned in other posts, the Duffin is a doughnut/muffin hybrid; but the description does not it justice. You must try it for that! It is crisp on the outside like a doughnut but soft and "cakey" on the inside, a real treat. The whoopie pies might actually steal the show from even the Duffin. We all remember these from our childhood, and they do them right and BIG! The cake part is chocolate while the filling is marshmellow. Any complaints about the chocolate cake being dry or overpowering with the whoopie is abated as it is moist but sturdy enough not to crumble when splitting in two for sharing (and believe me with the size of the regular ones you will need to split them, they're the size of a softball!) The filling meanwhile, is some soft of marshmellow frosting it seems. However, they do also make them in smaller "bit size" version, which are still at least 2-3 bites worth. Finally, some of the often overlooked treats are the lemon bars, which do not have the artificial taste many do along with their raspberry crumb squares, which are always moist. Their pies are always made with fresh, in-season fruit and are another item to consider. Surprisingly, their savory items are also another delicious fare, which include various types of quiches, scones, and breads (think banana bread replaced with vegetables such as zucchini). My only comment is the pricing. A 12" cake will run about $45 dollars, while the size of the price does not always match the size of the treat. Cupcakes are $2 for a regular (vanilla, chocolate, etc.) and $2.50 for the specialty ones. The whoopie pies, because of their size, are the best value. I have never had a bad tasting baked good here, however, I doubt I would spend $45 for a cake from any bakery. Instead, I would get an assortment of the various other goods for the same price. Love this place! You have to try the duffins!

If you want giant soccer ball sized cupcakes that are 980 calories each, go to Crumbs. If you want your duffin to be filled with tons of fake jelly, go to the Dunkin' Donuts around the corner. But if you want extremely high quality and delicious baked goods, including the world's best (perhaps only) Creme Brulee cupcake, then go to Brownie Points. Not only the Creme Brulee cupcake is the best I've ever tasted, but their Pecan Bar is also the best I've ever had anywhere. Don't go to Brownie Points if you don't like real butter in your baked goods and lots of it. Also don't go if you are expecting warm and fuzzy service, on that they are very hit or miss, most particularly the man that I believe is one of their co-owners or chief bakers (based on the many times I've seen him in the store and farmer's market since they first opened). He will not win any Brownie Points for his bedside manner, and that's why I docked them a star. But for the quality of baked goods this place deserves 5 stars. I think the mixed reviews here on Yelp represent the tendency of the reviewers to prefer quantity over quality, massive portion sizes and sickly-sweet icings over balanced recipes. The store was very nice and clean and the gentleman helping me was very nice. The prices were reasonable, however the cupcakes were not very good. The frosting had a weird taste and the cake was dry. Some of the best cupcakes I've had in New Jersey. If you're like me you judge a bakery by their vanilla cupcake. Unfortunately the vanilla was not a winner for me but thankfully I tried other flavors and I'm in lov. The Salted Caramel and Coconut are the stuff of dreams. Mint chocolate chip and the Raspberry Lemonade are also delicious. The cupcake of the week is also something to look forward to, if its the cookies and cream I suggest you get two! Brownie Points is amazing. We've ordered their cakes multiple times for family birthdays and couldn't be more impressed. While the store is small, it's in an convenient location being right near the train station. Their cupcakes are delicious and the staff is always very courteous and friendly. My entire family treks routinely to the shop (which is adorable) to buy the bakery's signature muffins, which are absolutely delicious, always moist and flavorful. I found the owner to be EXTREMELY rude. I bought an offer via Groupon for cupcakes. I just requested my money back from Groupon thanks to the rude owner and the sub par cupcakes. As other reviewers stated, the cupcakes were small, but the biggest issue was taste! I took a Wilton class and could do much better than this. I have gone back here a few more times and I think it you order the right things this place can be great. The duffins are amazing (chocolate is my fave) as well as the raspberry crumb cake bars and chocolate chip scones. Still not impressed by the cupcakes or whoopie pies, and I noticed they never have the pudding anymore so maybe the owners listened about not freezing them (which was probably because they weren't selling), and stopped making them. Not bad - not so great either. The cupcake icings are better than their cake counterparts which I usually find to be a bit dry. The icings for the most part are tasty but it is hit and miss. Still, I like the Salted Caramel variety and I don't complain when my wife brings me something home, but I walk by without stopping in quite often, which for me, says a lot. read more

Our family LOVES Brownie Points cupcakes. We've sampled almost every type of cupcake and think they're pretty darn tasty. Not sure what's up with the cupcake haters down below, but can honestly say we've had the opposite experience time and time again. Cup cakes have become a trendy treat to enjoy. However, very few shops are able to make a truly enjoyable treat. Unfortunately brownie points gets none from me, as they have miserably fail to make a simple treat. At 2.75 per cup cake you should expect something moist a delicious . We bought 7 cup cakes and all were like eating saw dust. If I were buying these for a dinner party I would be embarrassed to serve them. All would be forgiven if they had good service but our server was the most miserable person which rounded out the cup cake shop. Would rather go to A&P. read more

I've interacted with the staff several times at their store and at the farmer's market and they are always rude and grumpy. It's too bad. Their mediocre cookies and cupcakes would be tolerable if a smile accompanied them but the attitude is like a stab in the back while they charge you an arm and a leg. $33 for a dozen cupcakes. I went on this website because I plan on ordering Brownie Point's delicious chocolate pecan pie for Thanksgiving. I am writing this review because I was stunned to see the negative reviews on YELP. I am very fussy about my food and baked goods and find most bakeries disappointing. Not Brownie Points! I have tried several things there and I would say that at least 90% of everything I have tried has been absolutely delicious!! My children heartily agree. In fact I am a very good baker and in charge of Thanksgiving desserts for the extended family and am more than capable of making a very good pecan pie. i just don't think it will be as good as theirs! I bought these with a groupon. I was surprised at first because the shop is very small, not cases upon cases of sweet nothings. These cupcakes are something! Just enough sweetness to satisfy without sending one running to their dentist the next day. They were dense without being heavy and had such a smooth flavor. You have to try the scones, they are the best! The cherry are really good (some people like cinnamon but I personally find that to be too sweet). The cupcakes are pretty great too, but not as good as Magnolia's in the city. Mint chocolate chip (or something like that) is a really good even though it sounds weird, I would recommend it. Everyone I know loves the duffins, but I think those are kind of gross (too greasy to be a muffin, but without the crispiness doughiness of a doughnut). Its a cute idea though. Overall I would say go for a scone because they are really good (and I love scones, so I have eaten a lot of them). Nice and crispy and not overly sweet, with a flaky inside. Enjoy! read more
