I came here for a Carmel cake to support a black business. My cake had several of egg shells. 2min later I came back into the store to let them know & show them the egg shells. The manger(lady) told me that's not uncommon at bakery. She was so nonchalant toward me. Then say we don't do refunds. All I had a was small piece to taste it. So she saying anything cooked with eggs should have egg shells in it? If I order pancakes & eggs for breakfast is it ok to have egg shells inside? I think not! I stopped at Brown Sugar on Saturday and I was greatly disappointed. I have heard so many good things about them and it was the worst slice of cake I'd ever had. I've had store brought cake that was better. I ordered three slices of cake, which costs $20. The red velvet was dry and tasted old. I didn't try the chocolate cake because the red velvet was so bad. The owner is a sweet soul who aims to please and is always willing to speak to patrons when they enter. Her staff, some of them, mostly women, are NOT customer service oriented and suffer from a lack of training. Many of them are being "trained up" and need guidance, which I believe the owner is able to give to some of them, however, in afraid that some of her staff may negatively impact her business because they lack tact, discretion and general customer service etiquette in person at the store and over the phone. This bakery reminds me of family reunions, Christmas dinner... any family affair! The only difference is you can get every favorite at one place at one time. My favorites is the Caramel Creme cake, the bread pudding and the strawberry cake. When I have friends and family from out of town, I ALWAYS get the Obama cake. My friend and I decided to go to brown sugar bakery on a chilly Friday afternoon after we finished our midterms and it was such a delightful treat that day! The staff is so so so friendly and you can definitely feel the warmth of the family owned bakery. We got the Oreo cake and split it between the two of us. Even though one slice was massive, we devoured it quickly anyway. Why I'm giving brown sugar bakery four stars instead of five is because I wish the cake had been a bit fluffier and less cold, but those are probably my personal preferences. Good cakes but staffing need to be more professional. l understand that it is Covid but when ask to see the cake I was asked to "go over there" well over there was by the garbage can. We're new to the city and my husband heard rave reviews about Brown Sugar Bakery being the best in the city. He specifically wanted to try the caramel cake. I went out of my way to pick up a slice for his birthday and it was so worth it. I walked out with two slices of caramel cake -- which are huge -- and a strawberry cupcake. Came to about $12. If I worked here I would be fired for eating everything in the display cases. When I walked in the door, I was met with a glorious aroma that immediately turned me into a kid in a candy store. Cakes and pies are sold whole or by the slice. They also sell cupcakes and parfaits. I bought the pineapple upside down cake and a caramel vanilla cupcake. The hand sanitizer at the register is a plus, because it allowed me to demolish that cupcake before I left the premises. My friend got a slice of sweet potato pie and a caramel cupcake-all delicious. I am very disappointed in the customer service at this bakery. The employees are very rude and have such bad attitudes. I have tried several times to place an order and have also tried to come in to purchase some of their baked goods. I have made many complaints the owner never returned the calls. They are never true to their closing hours and it is a journey for me to get to this location. They close between 15 to 30 minutes early and are very rude about it. I give up I will not be giving them anymore of my business it's not worth the headache or the treatment and the unprofessional Way they conduct themselves. Went to both 75th street and Navy pier locations on different occasions. Cakes from the flagship location were just okay. Definitely on the dry side, but my biggest issue with them was the weird aftertaste. Both the cupcakes and slices tasted stale, like they were frozen and then thawed again. That unappetizing refrigerator taste. Cake from navy pier was worse. Very expensive and DRY as the Sahara. I could've knocked that cupcake off a counter and it would've shattered. I've been wanting to try this place for a while ever since I tasted one of their cakes at an event I attended - I remember the cake was so moist. I finally made it down to their location. The Caramel cake is definitely my favorite! Every bite has caramel because they put it in each layer. The turtle cupcake is also a really good one! The first day I went it was really crowded, so I think the staff was a little stressed. They are overrated..I try to give this place a chance but the cupcake are dry and just not good. I got the Obama cake that everyone raved about and it was dry. It was red velvet with chocolate and another flavor but can't remember. The other thing I got on this visit was banana pudding. It was just ok. It had vanilla wafer on top and on the bottom.
