Brown Dog Cafe is definitely worth going to for lunch. Food was really good. I ordered the Game Hero Sandwich made of lamb + wild boar + local lettuce + cucumber relish tzatziki + grilled pita + house fries. I was hoping to "taste" the wild boar but tasted mostly lamb. It was still extremely good. My cabbage soup was also very good BUT not very hot. Others had the tacos and the club sandwich, all very good as well. Katelyn our waitress was EXTREMELY pleasant and very patient. The 3 of us in our party were trying to catch up after not seeing each other for 2 years. This is one of the reasons for only 4 stars. I loved everything about this restaurant. I was there with dear friends. I enjoyed the mushroom burger (French Mud? I think?) At our table, we also had other burgers and pizza which we all tasted. Tried this spot a few years ago--service was terrible. Gave it another shot today--same story. Sat at the bar, bartender was friendly but painfully slow. Soup, salad, sandwich, and a couple drinks took over an hour to arrive. A couple who came in 30 minutes after us got their food well before we did. The scallops were cooked to perfection, as was the risotto. There were so many delicious savory flavors & the Bok Choy added a nice crunch. It was the perfect meal for a cool evening & the portion was perfect. Absolutely worth every penny. My husband had the El Diablo Burger - ghost pepper jack + barbacoa + pico guacamole + shaved lettuce + smoked garlic aioli ($22). I am typically not super into barbacoa, but this burger changed my mind. The guacamole was so creamy & helped balance the heat from the cheese. The meat was tender & delicious, very well-seasoned. Neither of us could get over how amazing that burger was. Would absolutely order again. The menu does change seasonally, but so far I have had nothing short of a 5-star experience & have had something different every time, which is unlike me, but I like that the ever-changing menu gives me that opportunity. First, I will preface this with - I am not a complainer. Picked this place because we have always had amazing service and food. Tonight I was so disappointed- we won't be back. The appetizer and salad were great as usual, and my husband's entree was good. However, I went in knowing that I wanted the Duckchetta. When my order arrived - it was not what I expected but after our wonderful server offered to replace it, I asked to take a second look at the menu. Because maybe I missed something - and I acknowledged I apparently did. It now says pea risotto. (I don't like peas) However, the description on the online menu did not match what the menu reflected. But, I decided it was my fault for not paying better attention and I would try to eat it. It was "ok" until I bit into raw duck! One piece was ok but the other made me gag. At that point, I couldn't eat anything else. The manager did do a "brief" walk by and nod to us but did not stop long enough to find out why my fully 95% uneaten meal was set aside. Then - we got our bill. Not only did they over charge our drinks to the tune of $10 but - there was a cc charge included! We were paying cash! At that point I did point out that my food was not what I expected. Our server felt horrible and went back to whomever - to ask what she could do. The reply was "offer them a free dessert" and back off the over price in the drinks and cc charge. But, the response to the entree was that I looked at an out dated menu - on the current website! Really? WOW - please know that I have family in the restaurant industry and know 100% how duck is supposed to be cooked. And the risotto tasted like pea puree. And was tough. Plus, at the point you're offering me a dessert - you have lost my trust and I just want to leave. Thanks for making my birthday special. So beware - check your bill. There is a food tax, an alcohol tax and a cc fee automatically included. Which I have never noticed any of that before. And - the prices of the drinks ring out higher than what is in the menu So for $185. Not worth the hassle. I must say our experience here was awesome! The cedar plank salmon and grilled halibut were both phenomenal and our server was very attentive as well. Everything we had was good. Not great. Not mediocre, but good. A d add old 4 stars. Service could've been faster, but once we placed our order it came out as fast as you would expect. I got the burger and it was cooked the way I asked. Pretty juicy. Lots of cheese. Lots of pretty good quality toppings. It was very good. The fries were good, but a little less good than the burger. We had our kids with us and they both ate most of their kids meals, which were pretty big, so not bad value for the $10 price tag. All in all solid 4 stars and we'll come back. Visited brown dog cafe today with my sister. We stumbled upon it on mistake after trying to eat elsewhere. The menu was intriguing and there was no wait so we settled right into our booth. It's a cozy cafe like restaurant, no big frills, just comfy and casual. There weren't many customers in during the time we went (early afternoon). We looked over the menu and decided on a beyond burger and the monte Cristo. We did notice that the online menu and print menu did seem to have different options. For it to be slightly empty, our food took longer than expected. My sister said her burger was delicious, it was served warm and the fries were hot and crispy! My monte Cristo was just okay, nothing special. The best part was the fig jam they used. I'd likely return here and try something else if we were in the area! We just wrapped up our dinner and I have to say, I was super impressed! It was a decently busy Saturday night, but we secured reservations through their website super easily just a little over an hour before we wanted to eat, so that was nice. Some of the tables have high backed benches that help to make you feel a little more isolated than you would think, given the amount of tables in the size. It felt a little more romantic, and despite being nearly full, the overall ambient noise level was fairly low, which was also nice. For the price, it's going to be really hard to beat the quality of meal you're going to receive. I kept it simple and ordered a burger, their El Diablo, which featured ghost pepper cheese, barbacoa, pico de gallo and guacamole. It was cooked perfectly and each element was fantastic. The barbacoa was amazing and the guacamole was super creamy. My wife ordered diver scallops with a butternut squash risotto and roasted red pepper sauce that was to die for. The scallops were perfect and the roasted red pepper flavor shined through. All in all, we were both very pleased - and very full - when all was said and done. Unfortunately we had a bad experience all around. I expressed having food allergies in advance of coming to make sure I could eat there safely, they said thy could accommodate. The waiter also said they could accommodate with what I ordered. We waited 45 minutes and apps and food came out at the same time. When larger tables that came in after us got their food before us. Several of our items came out ice cold. My meal came out plate covered in the items I did not order due to allergy. The waiter was very unapologetic. Did not have the manager talk to us. Due to time I did not reorder so we really did not hardly eat. The food my husband did eat he said was so salty it was barely edible. The hummus platter is wonderful. 4 out of 5 of us enjoyed it. (My husband doesn't eat hummus.) The curried tofu on salad was filling, but I didn't expect one large piece of tofu. I've been eating at Brown Dog since their original location, I like the feel of the Summit Park location a lot. Their food is elevated, great interesting menu with interesting spices and combination. This is great for meeting for lunch and also nice for a date night supper. They have had issues with staffing, same as every other restaurant during 2020 and 2021 but they handled it beautifully. Staff is always courteous and waiting is pleasant when you're aware of the delay and the setting is as nice as this one. Burgers and their delicious fries, salads, crab cakes, poutine, I like it all. I have not had a bad meal there in 10-15 visits. I highly recommend visiting and a walk in the park while you're there. read more

I have been to the Brown Dog several times and each time it gets worse. I sat in the bar area in a booth. The bartender was great no problem with her. I wanted a draft beer and the tap was not working properly. The bartender called someone from the kitchen who could have cared less..had an attitude and I guess he thought I couldn't hear or see him. As I looked around the booth I was in I noticed it was worn, the picture hanging on the wall and the wall itself was very dirty. It was a hot day and I guess the a/c was out...it was hot in the restaurant & the the bathroom was not very clean. Overpriced food. Next time I will go to Mad Tree up the street! The night prior, before emailing the menu to everyone to make their selections, I called to inquire about the carry out order process. I wanted to really like this place but it missed the mark quite a bit. My daughter and I were looking forward to our brunch here recently but were left disappointed. The food just wasn't very good at all. My daughter ordered the 3 Egg Omelet, subbed the Rosemary Potatoes in place of the salad. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. My daughter's order was wrong. She was delivered someone else's omelet. After they brought out her correct plate, she was then missing the biscuit. That was brought out but she never got the butter or jam for the biscuit. We asked, it was never brought. Her potatoes were so overly seasoned that they tasted like perfume. Most people know that if you over season with rosemary you've ruined the dish. Her potatoes were awful. Her omelet was loaded with cheese and the ingredients she chose. Whoever was cooking was heavy handed on everything when they made her food and it didn't taste good at all. My eggs Benedict were so bland that I can honestly say they were the worst I've ordered, anywhere. Thankfully my potatoes were not over-seasoned and I enjoyed those quite a bit. The service was really slow, although it seemed like they had plenty of servers. Very pleasant server - just slow and inattentive. It's pricey for the quality of the food that we were served. I had dinner here a few months back for a private corporate event with about 30 people on the closed in patio. We only had two servers, one was named Ben, but both young men were fantastic! The other one was named Noah maybe?? They managed the needs of the party well and I never felt like I was waiting long for service. These guys knew what they were doing!!! They have an expansive liquor list, so I was just in luck to order my favorite cocktail ever: an extra dirty Bombay gin martini. I had two over the course of our long dinner, both of which were awesome. We had a limited, pre-set menu since it was a corporate dinner event. My table shared the charcuterie and we also each had a salad. The charcuterie was fine, probably the least forgettable part of the meal, but it was not bad by any means. I had the baby bleu salad which was awesome! The avocado and tomatoes were super fresh and I enjoyed the dressing. Now I was blown away by my main course! I never order pork at a restaurant unless it's a bbq place, but the sides with the pork chop dinner were right up my alley. I had a grilled pork chop with a nice chutney, brussels, and some sort of polenta/corn bread cakes. For someone who usually hates pork chops, I was very impressed with this one. It was still a bit dry but I just think that's pork. The brussel sprouts were crispy and delicious. I was obsessing over the polenta- the crusty outside and warm inside was a perfect match with the pork and chutney. Brown Dog Cafe "GET OUT!" Experience at Summit Park in Blue Ashe, OH ********************************************** This is a long post about AWARENESS. Being WOKE. No pity necessary. ********************************************** Typically, I don't venture out on a work night since my days begin very early morning, but there was Delta business to handle, so I thought I'd sacrifice the time this past Thursday evening. Sorors had a 6:30 pm arrival time at Brown Dog Cafe at Summit Park in Blue Ashe and some of us were seated on the outdoor patio by then. I had a hard stop 8:00 pm deadline in my mind to head home. We had ordered a 3-course Restaurant Week special, and by 8:30 pm, the main course still had not yet come to the table. Although I was a bit anxious and tired, I politely went inside and asked if my salmon could be boxed to go. The waiter appeared to be anxious, too, and asked if I could wait a few more minutes. When I expressed that I couldn't, he said he'd have to get the manager to handle the bill. That manager, Max, approached me like a vicious pit bull waiting for its next victim! When I expressed the long wait time for my decision to leave, rather than apologize, his first response was to dispute our 6:30 pm arrival. He then growled viciously accusing and humiliating me stating out loud that I was trying to get out of paying the bill for my soup and salad even though I had an open wallet and credit card in hand. In that moment, I thought of Sandra Bland and how a routine traffic stop so quickly resulted in her arrest and death. When I noticed that it appeared I was the only person of color inside of the restaurant, I went to get the Soror who booked the reservation. In sheer fear of his 6'2ish" demeanor and aggressive manner, I trembled trying to videotape what was happening. He became more aggressive and I threatened to call the police for his rudeness and disrespect as well. He said, "Call them, you'll have to pay for your meal then!" For whatever reason, he was determined to "dog" me in public. It was the first time in my adulthood that I experienced the "fight or flight" decision in such a manner. On my 20-minute drive home all I could do was think about how many African Americans have lost their lives in similar situations that seemed to happen in "poof" a matter of seconds. Over the phone, my boyfriend read the reviews that riddled my experience. Myself included, the lesson learned was that people need to practice RESPONDING instead of REACTING which is far easier said than done. I was definitely caught off guard! Manager Max, at Brown Dog cafe, growled viciously at me with several attempts to take a bite out of my character. He went from 0-100 when I threatened to call the police and attempted to record him. He extended no apology and blamed me for their poor service pretty much barking at me to, "GET OUT!" of the establishment. It would haven taken this man 5 minutes to apologize, take my money for my meal and send me on my way. After I left, it appears that he extended the apology to Sorors, gave a free birthday dessert and offered me a "free" meal in my absence. Unacceptable and Unapologetic was the manager of Brown Dog Cafe at Summit Park in Blue Ashe. It's hard to imagine that my experience is the vision and mission of the company. This was easily one of my favorites as the combination of flavors (hummus, goat cheese, tapenades) was very well curated. Our waitress was with us promptly and brought out our drinks. I ordered The Hero ($14) with fruit (+$5) and my friend ordered Él Diablo burger ($19). The Hero was very good but seemed very similar to an average gyro for a much steaper price. The $5 up charge on fruit seemed unnecessary and although it was not on the menu, the waitress did not mention the uo charge when I asked to substitute. The El Diablo burger was very good and fairly spicy, and the fries were well seasoned. Overall Brown Dog Cafe serves good fun in a nice atmosphere, but the prices are a bit high for what is given. read more

Where are the seasonings? Why all the hidden charges in fine print? I came for poutine but I believe that is for dinner at this time. It's 1pm on a Saturday and the place is a full house for the most part. It's a trendy, cute spot in Summit Park, my favor place to walk and people watch. We finally found time to fulfill a reservation twice removed, and were greeted with warm smiles and pleasant demeanor. The staff was accommodating with our needs. The food lacked seasoning and personality. It looked great as you can see from the pictures but for me, their has to be flavor. The house salad was delicious but more greens were needed to balance the cheese and nuts. Burger was dry. Be sure to mention your toppings for the sandwich or you just get meat on a bun. Upcharge $5 for anything other than fries. The ice cream was creamy, milky and but could use more vanilla. No flavor. The carrot cake could have been more textured. I cannot even remember the omelet and I just left the place. When we paid the bill and i reviewed it, I noticed my drink was actually alcohol and there was an upcharge for fruit in place of fries. All the help could say was sorry and that she should have mentioned the upcharges but it was on the menu. They are definitely trained to con you with smiles and omissions. Tried it on a Wednesday for dinner, liked it so much, brought a party of 7 back on Saturday for brunch. Service was great both visits. The staff all had smiles and seemed to be enjoying themselves when interacting with customers. The GM (Max) stopped by each table to check on meals and service. We tried several dishes; Brown Dog Burger, margarita pizza, chicken and waffles, goetta breakfast and Huevos Benedictos. Everyone literally cleaned their plates the food was so good. The desserts are homemade and also delicious as well. Pricing was fair and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The dishes were creative and unique and the kitchen staff executed very well. The location is pretty with the park just there next to it. There's plenty parking nearby. As we entered, a lady guided us to our booth. The interiors are pretty cool- I actually liked the booth designs. As we got the dinner menu, the prices for everything were a tad bit high. I got the Rhinegeist Slangria and the Brown Dog Poutine. The Poutine was good- no doubt about it. However, it was very lil for the $12 I paid. Also, if the charge is that much, I'd expect better flavors, but it was just usual. Good, but not special. A coworker brought me here for lunch yesterday and had really hyped it up. Unfortunately, my experience didn't live up to the hype. I ordered the lunch combo of a side salad and bbq quesadilla. I specially asked the server if the side salad came with any unusual toppings and she said "no, it is a basic house salad". When the order came out, the salad had walnuts, raisins, and feta. This seemed odd considering I've never seen another place call this a basic house salad. I don't think the quesadilla barely had any cheese in it. It was more of a taco shell stuffed with meat. Overall, the meal just seemed to be lacking and the service was pretty slow. Hopefully this was just an off day for service but unfortunately they left much to be desired. read more

Food is ok, service is terrible and if you have a party of 8 or more they know they can be as rude as they want because gratuity is included. As an addendum to our previous review, found out our credit card was hacked right after visiting here and going here was the only place out of the ordinary for us. Luckily our credit card company was able to reimburse us and put a stop on the card before some larger purchases were made. Just an observation, the credit card company says they are going to investigate further. read more

First time here & food was wonderful. Best chicken & waffles ever( the balance between sweet/savory/ spicy was amazing).
