We like to get away to Doe Bay on Orcas several times a year. We might bump that up to once a month just to have a reason to stop by Brown Bear Baking for lunch each day! Their bread loaves would make a 19th century french artisan baker weep, perfect crest, chew, aroma, flavor! The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and best of all genuinely happy to help you stuff delicious baked goods and Victrola coffee in yo face! We will be getting married on the island this month and hope to direct all our wedding guests to stop by at least once and sample a scrumptious Chocolate Muffin or open faced Croque Monsieur. read more

This is my FAVORITE "goodie stop. The tasty treats are always fresh, and if I am lucky there is a gluten free option, which is always heavenly. The coffee is always fresh and delicious. My only gripe is that it can be a bit of a wait.... gee, I wonder why? The wait is worth it, unless someone in front of me takes the last GF treat! We were bummed that the New Leaf Café wasn't open for breakfast on a weekday, and this place was our back-up plan. I'm so glad Plan B worked out! Our espresso drinks were perfect. I'm not a big pastry person, but I demolished the orange-cinnamon bun, which was perfectly soft and flaky. My boyfriend loved his blueberry muffin, and the yogurt parfait was delicious! It was a lovely morning, and there are little tables outside. Also a couple picnic tables for larger groups. We stopped here on a whim on a Saturday morning. The smell inside the shop was delightful. We got a ham and Swiss croissant and a chocolate muffin. The croissant was so fresh and it had the most amazing buttery flakey layers. The coffee was also good but the croissant was the star. I'll be back tomorrow for another one! read more

In Eastsound for a vacation visiting family. Enjoyed the chocolate muffin- sinfully delicious, had to return for seconds the next day. On both visits the goods were fresh, delicious and temptingly displayed. Unfortunately no Wi-Fi available, but who needs to work when you can sit on the deck enjoying tea, a muffin, and the sunshine?! I heard exclamations to the owners from other customers that the quiche was "the best of my life!" This person looked as though they had done a lot of living, so I'm apt to follow up on the recommendation next time I'm in town! read more

Excellent service, great offerings and fun! My mom, sister's and I spent our annual "Women's Retreat" on Orcas Island this year. My sister was told by friends in the Seattle area that Brown Bear Baking should be a required stop during our trip. They were right! The atmosphere was contemporary and warm with a beautiful open kitchen. The staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful and fun. AND did I mention the coffee? We had the sauciest and best pumpkin spice lattes ever! The person who waited on us accommodated all of our coffee preferences with a friendly smile and ease. We had a very short wait for our food because it is the off-season. They made my ham, cheese, and apple sandwich on sourdough vegetarian, which was very accommodating, and it was still delicious. Pretty darn good. This place was poppin off for Memorial Day weekend. Great location in the middle of downtown. Husband and I split a cream cheese apricot croissant, and spinach/feta croissant. We both had Americanos which were tasty too. Real props go to Chris at the whale watching stand out front. We were eating our breakfast in the sunshine on the patio, when he strikes up a conversation about the whales. We brought our own boat, but he got up and proceeded to mark up a map for us of some of the hot spots for whale watching. How sweet is that?! I did not get coffee, so my comments are about the pastries. If you only have time for one stop in Orcas Island, you should definitely go to Brown Bear. I have been here a couple of time in the afternoon and was disappointed with the selection. They are not the mass production kind so not many croissants left at 3 PM. Today I made a special trip at 9, wow! The Croissant Pomme is a must try, can't go wrong with the bear claws or Chocolate croissant. I wanted to GE the sticky buns and the orange-flavored crispy thing but my husband put a stop to it. They also served soup, bread, and savory croissants. More reason to come back again and again. Everything we had here was SO delicious. The chocolate muffin was moist, the croque monsieur was inventive, and the croissants and quiche were SO buttery! The coffee and customer service leave a lot to be desired, however. The coffee is nothing better than "meh" and I watched as one of the managers (presumably) ripped one of his employees apart in a full cafe. I also had a really awkward encounter with the barista. I had two drinks and she called my name and pushed a drink towards me and I grabbed it. Then a minute later she pushed another drink out, and when I asked "is this mine too?" Just to confirm before I took it, she got a little attitudey ("well, did you order an Americano?" Yes, but I'm sure other people in here did as well!) The flavor of the food could probably make up for anything they could do to me, though. read more

We've been to orcas before but this was our first time to Brown Bear. We obviously did not appear to be locals (my husband is Indian and me Asian) but were greeted in the most friendly way all other establishment on this island have greeted us. The man at the counter went over all the fresh bake of the day and the ingredients in each. The salmon quiche is THE best I've ever tasted. (They smoked the salmon right here) On a busy day I can see this small shop being swamped but I believe they do the best they can without giving preferential treatment to locals as another review indicated. Most who come during peak times are visitors anyway. As for the price, I think it's reasonable ...being on an island, most things will cost more having to be shipped in..people need to factor that into anything they purchase here. It is not that much more than any specialty bakery one would find on the main land. If you just come once and it happened to be during very busy season..don't review this place as though that's how it *always* is. We came in early spring..(not too much tourist crowd yet) and found the service to be very friendly and the food delicious read more

The pastries are incredible, especially the morning bun. Absolutely amazing flavors and creative food. Wonderful atmosphere and lovely way of doing things. Only downside that keeps them from 5 stars is that in 3 visits, they have not got the coffee right. I order a vanilla latte every time and they seem to favor more milk then coffee. I have ordered a 3 different times with 3 different people and each time I get something different. I will let little things slide like forgetting to add a shot or not putting whip on something, but putting whole milk when someone specifies they need to have soy or something else in there is a big no-no, and from what I understand, dangerous, especially if the customer is not watching you make it. read more

In September we rented a cabin on Orcas Island for my mom's 90th birthday. We arrived on Friday afternoon with no plan for a birthday cake. I spotted Brown Bear Baking and snuck in around 4pm see what they could do. So incredibly friendly and accommodating, they devised a plan to make a strawberry-blueberry galette after hours that I could pick up later that evening. It was so beautiful and perfect and extra special, and tasted as wonderful as it looked. What a gift for my mom's 90th!! I love this place! read more

I'm so jealous this place is not in my town! Enter into a lovely rose garden. The aroma is a mixture of roses and grandma's cookies baking in the oven. Enter the bakery to be presented by Go Go Bordello music and soft colors on the walls with a full view of the kitchen. For you Shrek fans...we now know the Muffin Man, is name is Tommy and he is awesome with his shaven head and handle bar mustache, riding his unicycle to work. Audra, also hard at work keeping everyone happy, made wonderful lattes without even a hint of bitterness~wonderful! Now for the food. All I can say is WoW!!! We had the salmon quiche. Fluffy and strongly flavorful with Swiss cheese and bites of salmon. The crust was not pie crust but more like croissant. We shared a chocolate Muffin.
