I was excited to visit given the positive reviews, but was disappointed by the rudeness of the lady at the register. As I drank my latte I could tell that person after person at this busy place were having awkward to rude interactions with her due to her over the top directness and up selling efforts. There is also no prices on anything which didn't bother me until paying and realizing it was $17 for a small latte with a pre-made package of two semi stale cookies. My husband and I wandered into Brown Bear Baking, thinking we could buy a pastry to split. Our eyes immediately landed on the beautiful, round breads behind the counter. We chose the fig and apricot bread, figuring we'd tear off pieces and nibble on throughout the day. Nibble? We inhaled the bread. It was extraordinary. That evening, we plotted to return the following morning to purchase their rosemary and kalamata olive bread to take home. No doubt, their delectable pastries and savory treats (i.e. slices of their bread layered with asparagus, ham, and cheese and then broiled, quiches, etc.) are as good as their breads. When we return to Orcas Island, one of our first stops will be this bakery. Every aspect of this bakery from the food to the aroma, and being able to interact with the bakers makes it a 5-star experience. read more

Wow, just wow. This place is a must when visiting Orcas Island. We shared the veggie quiche and salmon quiche and they were both amazing. I loved the bold taste of the veggie and my wife preferred the salmon. We also got a blueberry muffin, bear claw, sticky bun, and orange roll sampling each of them leaving some to take back home. I'm not sure if they will make it home though. I definitely recommend getting here when they open to take full advantage of right out of the oven goodness. read more

Don't miss it. I have a practice of not eating at the same place twice when traveling... unless it's just that good. Yup, it's just that good. My husband and I came here for breakfast two mornings in a row -- the fresh, warm bread pudding with bourbon sauce and apple slices was incredible and arguably the best almond croissant ever, didn't hurt that it was fresh as well. We also had a muffin that was out of this world and my husband is not a muffin person. The atmosphere and decor only adds to the experience. This place could be amazing. They use Victrola beans, and the pastries look divine. I visited for my first time last Saturday after a long hike with my son. I ordered a latte, and got my son a muffin. We enjoyed sitting on the stools and watching them make a batch of chocolate croissants. The person making my latte may have been a new employee. I was disappointed to see the girl at the register speak unkindly/impatiently to him as he was restocking something and not doing it the way she would have done it. My latte came out way too hot, but was good once it cooled down. We were both mesmerized by watching an employee arrange, measure, and cut the dough for the croissants. The next step was putting the bar of chocolate in the center. He started the process, then pulled his cell phone out of his apron, sent a text, and went back to using his hands to place the chocolate WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS.
