Madrona Bar & Grill has excellent views right on the water, making it perfect for a nice day on the patio or even a rainy day spent inside overlooking the bay. The Salmon Tacos were really good -- each came with a nice piece of grilled salmon. The Cheesesteak was decent, not the best I've ever had, but that's fair given we're a long way from Philly. The beer selection was also solid and paired well with the meal. It was our first visit to the island. We went all over. Loved it. We wanted to try next door (they weren't open the whole time we were there), but found this place. Awesome views, awesome service. They weren't unfortunately out of oysters. The clam chowder was really good and crab bisque was the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Overall great place. Worst steak EVER! Ribeye was WAY overcooked, tough, hardly edible. I congratulate myself for chewing through a third of it, but that's all I could stomach. Took plates away without asking if we wanted boxes (which I would have refused) and didn't even bother offering dessert. I came for lunch. The place was practically empty so I was able to sit outside no problem! Absolutely stunning views. Decided to have a burger. It wasn't the best I've ever had. Party of 2, walk in and only 1 other person in the place and yet it was a big deal to find us a table. Host sat us while talking on the phone (not a deal breaker), but the fruit margarita tasted like orange juice and not drinkable (in my opinion) so I ordered a beer not once did either server ask us about the margarita sitting full on the table. We ordered fish and chips which was not bad but, also nothing to rave over. This place had a very nice view and I'm sure visitors probably would be the most frequent customers. A solid 3.5 We were able to walk up and get reservations for a table of 4 and come back in 25 minutes. So that was pretty awesome. Our server was very friendly and pretty attentive so definitely no complaints there. Great views from the restaurant but from where we were sitting there was also a few flies buzzing around. So that was not the most pleasant. We ordered a few appetizers and I'd definitely say pass on the oysters and hummus. The hummus was thick and chunky and not very palatable. A delicious hummus should be creamy and spread easy. The oysters were alright but were just missing some seasoning or something. The coconut shrimp was the best appetizer but nothing I haven't had anywhere else. For my drink I ordered a double fruit margarita and it was okay. A little heavy on the citric side so I didn't finish. Now for my main course, I went with their nightly special which was a coconut curry mussel and this was most definitely a 5/5. It was creamy, slightly spicy, packed full of flavor and the mussels were sweet and fresh. The dish was everything I was hoping for. It absolutely made up for everything I lacked in the appetizers. My husband ordered the portabella burger and I must say when that came out we were all slightly disappointed about how small the mushroom was and my husband noted that his mushroom wasn't juicy and was a little on the dry side. We came to Orcas for the day in late October, and thank God for Madrona! Lovely table overlooking the water, excellent food and quick and humorous service. Not much else was open but we were happy to eat at Madrona for lunch AND dinner on our day trip. After getting off the ferry, yummy crab bisque and a cheese steak for one lunch, a crab bisque and a giant Caesar salad for the other. After doing the trail at Cascade Lake and driving up Mount Constitution, we got dinner to go from Madrona to eat on the 7:30 ferry. A Madrona burger and raviolis were welcome! We missed the cozy wood and glass ambiance and the view but it was the best ferry dinner ever. read more

I got the steak lunch special with the blue cheese crumbles. It was so damn good! Kailey was our server and she was so nice and attentive! I had a cup of clam chowder and fish sandwich with fries (available for lunch only) and everything was excellent. The clam chowder was hearty and flavorful. The fish sandwich was made up of beer battered Alaskan cod on a brioche bun with tomato, lettuce, onion, and mayo (I swapped it in lieu of tartar sauce) and it was extremely tasty. The fries were good - much better than the fries I had the night before at a well known place down the street. They were hot and fresh and sprinkled with salt. Husband and I came to unplug for the weekend and stumbled across this gem. Shelbi's service was amazing, she is was very knowledgeable and her reccomendations were on point. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable with a touch of elegance. We had the crab bisque and crab cakes to start. Both were great but the crab cakes were honestly some of the best I have ever had. For our mains ai had the blackened rockfish with pu.kin and garlic linguini that was extraordinarily flavorful and such a big portion I had to take some home, my husband had the ribeye and was more than pleased- and let me tell you he is a steak fanatic so needless to say we are leaving full and very pleased with our experience as a whole. Despite what my mom and her husband say (which is giving everything a 5) I am a true reviewer, and this is my honest opinion. Views were nice (everywhere has a good view on Orcas so this wasn't anything spectacular). Food was nothing special at all especially for the price. Service was not good. Our waitress was amazing, but they are short staffed and despite having a reservation, it still took forever. We had to remind the waitress for our drinks and correct orders, etc. Again, I get being short stuffed doesn't help but if your charging this kind of money for dinner you better be on it. It took 15 minutes to get the wait person to come to our table, and another 15 to get our drink order from a bar that was, literally, 10 steps away. It was pretty obvious the wait person didn't want to be there, and we didn't want her there either. The best we could do was enjoy the food, and tip her accordingly. Would we go back...the big question? If the restaurant managers and owners cared enough to properly train their staff, we'd be willing to try again; but as it stands, we will pass. If we wanted less than perfunctory performance, with little warmth or engagement, we'd go to a fast food joint. read more

What a splendid restaurant! Inventive dishes and libations, a gold-star setting overlooking the sound, and staffers who are eager to please! Somehow my reservation (made by phone a month earlier) had been ignored or lost,, but we managed to secure a lovely window table anyway. Even though the blind had broken and the afternoon sun glared in the window, the view and the table were still spectacular--we just put on our shades! My crab cakes were exquisite and a friend ordered a specialty salad with grilled salmon. We were both very pleased. Drinks were a party in of themselves. Mine featured grapefruit and a friend had a lavender-infused drink. So pretty, you hardly want to drink them! Went in on a weekday in summer (peak tourist season) and they were out of HALF of the items on the menu. The server's excuse was "we're on an island." Yep, you're on an island, so you should have seafood. You should also have deliveries more than once a week, since there are numerous ferries daily. They were out of a number of their wines, too. And HUMMOUS. Don't you make your own hummous? Is there a chickpea shortage on Orcas? The food was good--it was a good plate of fish'n'chips, but fish'n'chips is not what I wanted to eat--I would've gone to fish shack for half the price if I had. One of us had the mussel special, which was also good. But really, if you don't have half the items on your menu, change your menu. read more

We were blown away by the food and service. Best meal we had on the island after our weekend here. We got the halibut fish and chips, curry clams, crab bisque, BLT, and chicken Caesar. All 100/10. The blue cheese dressing and halibut fish and chips was the best we've ever had. Shelby was our waitress and she was absolutely incredible. I recently flew into Orcas Island Airport and was told this was the place to eat. I was excited to check it out, but the experience was nothing short of a disaster. From the moment we walked in, we were completely ignored--no greeting, no acknowledgment, nothing. Several tables were open, yet the staff acted like we didn't exist. After standing around for a while, I called the restaurant to ask if there was a wait. The person on the phone casually said, "No, come on in." I told her our group was already inside, just waiting to be seated, and her response? "Oh, we're super busy." No apology, no effort to help--just indifference. We waited another ten minutes after that call, and still, not a single word from the staff. At that point, it was clear they had zero interest in serving us. The complete lack of professionalism and basic courtesy was unbelievable. If this is how they treat customers, I wouldn't waste a single dollar here. Do yourself a favor--skip this place entirely. read more

So disappointed. Avoid this place if you can, ESPECIALLY if you have allergies--I got sick! I've here just about every summer growing up. We have liver in the San Juans during the summer months for over 20 years now. I was SO excited to come back and bring my friend who was visiting the PNW for the first time. Sadly, our experience here was extraordinarily awful. For starters, it took about 15 minutes just to get a table together--as in just set it up for our party. It was a large group, sure, but they were moving exceptionally slow, especially given there was close to no one there and no party in front of us. As soon as we sat, we were informed they were out of fresh fish (a restaurant on the water in the San Juans!!!) I asked if they could do the fish tacos with salmon instead but our waitress lamely said "oh well they don't have enough materials for that either". The waitress was pretty average and not particularly nice or helpful. I informed her of my gluten and dairy allergy and she didn't seem to take that seriously or try to be accommodating. I ended up ordering the pesto chicken on a gf bun with no cheese--after clearly asking if the pesto was dairy free and being told that it was (without her checking). Once the food came, there must've been a shift change because we had a new waitress who was somewhat nicer. My food came and the side salad had fried onions on top, so I explained I couldn't eat that because I had a gluten allergy. She quickly brought me a new plate and salad, sans gluten. Given the lapse in allergy care, I asked her if the pesto was dairy free to which she confidently and immediately said "yes". So I dug in. I will also note here my dad said his salmon sandwich was inedible and many others complaints were made about how much the quality of the food went down. Additionally our Moscow mules tasted like ginger beer and only ginger beer. So a disappointing dinner all around. But the worst part is that 10-15 minutes later, after we left, I started to feel sick, like I ate something I was allergic to. I called back and asked the person who answered to inquire about the pesto sandwich, if it was all gluten free when on a gf bun and if the pesto had dairy in it. Again, she said she was pretty sure they were fine and so I insisted she ask the kitchen. After a brief hold, she came back and let me know the pesto WAS NOT dairy free and had parmesan in it. Aaaand then I threw up. Soooo don't come here unless you want to waste your time and money on badly mixed drinks, inconsistent food, and pretty awful service. It truly is really sad to have to say. Hopefully they change things and improve, to be like they used to. read more
