I think this place is good for the drinks, the ambiance and the service. I was not pleased by the food. I ordered a medium-well carne asada and got a bloody medium-rare. The rice had no flavor unless I mixed it with the beans and they were pretty decent. I hate to write bad reviews but I was not impressed by the food but loved the service, drinks and our hostess. We were seated outside pretty swiftly, but it took quite some time for the servers to even bring us water and then chips & salsa. We do understand it was a busy weekend and evening, so no worries! When the food was delivered, it was absolutely worth it - as my salad with grilled chicken was absolutely delicious. Very fresh ingredients and the chicken had a delightful flavor. My husband enjoyed his tacos meal as well. For the food - this is a definite go-to! The service was great even though they were busy and were running around. Several vegetarian options. The enchilada with the mole sauce was likely put under the broiler, which gave caramel and smoky undertones to the dish. So delicious. Traveling with little kids, we try to find kid-friendly food options and Mijitas is definitely the place that caters to families with little ones. The shrimp tacos were wonderful and so were the oysters. We're from CA so rating Mexican food can be tricky since we have an abundance of it in CA. We had been here before and enjoyed it. However, we were very disappointed with our most recent experience. We waited over an hour to get our food on a Tuesday evening, and our server only touched base with us about this near the end of the wait. Also, she replaced one of the orders with something else without checking in. Granted, she heard my sister mention that she was debating between two options and gave her the second option. Still, it seems like a common courtesy to check with diners about a food switch. Also, in general, our server was not very friendly, a bit defensive, and seemed annoyed about needing to serve our larger group. The rest of the wait staff, though, was polite and attentive. The actual food was uneven. I ordered a chicken dish that was quite dry and a small portion. My brother in law noted that his enchiladas were very salty. This might be the greatest tasting Mexican food in all of Washington! I ordered the chicken enchilada and pork enchilada with salsa Colorado and a side of rice and beans. One bite and I was smiling from ear to ear. First off, perfect spice levels. As someone who isn't a big fan of spicy foods, this was perfect for me. The enchiladas were so juicy and moist. The chicken was a bit more flavorful than the pork, though. The pork was just a bit too simple but that's just me. I would also cut down on how much cheese is melted on top. I felt it was a bit too much. I don't even think it was needed because everything else just tasted so good. The beans have a slight kick to them but they were still tasty with the cojita cheese sprinkled on top. However, the rice was the best part. Not only did it smell like how I grew up eating it but it tasted even better. The rice was incredibly fluffy, light, and moist. Not sure if they used a broth but that was very tasty! It is a very small restaurant which means it does get busy pretty quickly. If you go early enough, you might get a good table but I would definitely suggest making reservations ahead of time. Because of how busy it got, the service was a bit slow. When I went, there were only two people attending tables: the hostess and the manager/owner (?). Props to the hostess, though. She not only sits the tables but she takes orders, delivers meals to tables, and cleans/sets the tables. She is incredible and super sweet! The other waitress, who I think might be the owner, definitely gets busy with customers but she has a great memory. At first, I thought she forgot that I had asked her for something but she came back after helping others with what I had asked for. That's a great quality to have. I do think they need a bit more help, though, just to make things run a bit smoother. The only disappointing thing is that Mijitas isn't near where I live -- so I guess that means I have to visit Orcas Island more often which is totally fine with me. read more

Surprisingly sizable menu for an island restaurant. We did our best to try a little of everything without hurting ourselves. The chips and salsa are delicious, the salsa is the best I've had in Washington and only second to my beloved Pappasito's. The salad was pretty great except for some wilted lettuces and too toasted pepitas but the guacamole scoop on top was perfection...so fresh and flavorful. The vinaigrette was also very nice. My honey enjoyed his house margarita, one of 9! options...coconut was a tempting second. I liked the fish taco dish--the habanero crema wasn't as spicy as you'd think and I'm a corn tortilla gal. The beans for both dishes were tender but pretty bland (black and pinto). The rice was nice and flavorful. The enchiladas seem to be a common fave as I heard practically every table ordering them. My honey enjoyed the new combo but missed some flavor/seasoning. We contemplated dessert and after having no photo to tease us, we thought why not? So glad we did! We ordered the house chocolate sauce but they were out and subbed the caramel automatically. Usually not a fan of cajeta but this caramel sauce was incredible. Better than Molly Moon's kind of caramel. The churros are chewy and hold their flavors without being oily or too sweet, excellent combo. Service was quick and they were working to keep us moving (no chance to be hangry with those warm chips and smooth salsa) and I was so relieved to see they give us our own pitcher! We had such a delicious meal and fantastic time at this restaurant. Had made a reservation but our ferry was late. I called to notify the restaurant and wasn't certain we'd be able to get in on a Friday night. Arrived at the restaurant and our table was ready and the ambiance was wonderful. I could tell service staff ran hot and cold but our server was great. Delicious margaritas, chips and salsa and crab enchiladas. Nice but short kids menu too. All of the food came out super fresh, fast and hot. The chips were also fresh and hot and they refilled them frequently for us. Music and patio was perfect. We will definitely be back! read more

Not much flavor or depth, and zero kick. What's the point?? Chile relleno - Good. Poblano chile stuffed with mushrooms and queso and breaded and fried. My father liked it. Fish tacos - Good. Fish was slightly overcooked and under seasoned. Carne asada - Good. Ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. No green onions, as advertised on the menu. Crab enchiladas - Very good. No kick despite there being habaneros in the sauce. Rich crab with cheese and red pepper sauce. Lomo de puerco - Very good. Nice amount of char on the pork to give it some smoky depth, and the chipotle sweet potato mash offered a sweet note to compliment the meat. El Mestizo - Good. Orcas island gem! Cozy space with friendly staff. It was my favorite meal while on the island. The blackberry mole with short rib was SO satisfying and meat was cooked to tender perfection. Order some tortillas and enjoy some awesome mole tacos tableside. The prawn tacos are a staple. They have frequently rotating menu specials. My fiancé and I flew to Orcas for a quick getaway for the day and decided to have dinner here. We walked in before the dinner rush and almost didn't get sat because their reservations were full. I am so glad they were able to accommodate us because the food was delicious. Upon sitting, we were served chips and salsa. The salsa is fresh and flavorful. I ordered a "La Frida" drink - prepare for it to be strong but refreshing. We shared an order of Esquites - Smokey grilled corn with cheese and mayo. Elote lovers, this one is for you. I went with the shrimp tacos that are covered in a habanero mayo with two tortillas per taco. The shrimp was perfectly crisp. Terrible SLOW service ruined this meal. It's passable Mexican food, though no spice to speak of. But the service was truly terrible from start to finish. The "host" was rude and disorganized, keeping us waiting 20 mins despite having a reservation. The waitress disappeared frequently so that we had to wave her down 20 mins after being seated to order. It took another 20 mins for our (incorrect) drinks to arrive and a full 80 min for our food to get to our table. A truly rancid smell coming from the kitchen which made us think twice about actually eating our food. One bright spot was one sweet young guy who was a server working his butt off. But the rest of the establishment was off, and on a night where the tables weren't even all filled. Definitely not returning. read more

This restaurant is an absolute gem! The staff is incredibly helpful and patient and they treated me like family. Even when there's a line it's so worth waiting for!! However reservations are advised! Anytime my grandchildren go to Orcas Island they beg to go there. And my daughter loves to go and have everything on the menu and even the margaritas are out of this world... The chef is incredibly skilled not just at Mexican food and you can tell by the nice variety of things on the menu. My favorite of all is the quinoa cakes with mashed chipotle sweet potatoes and local organic greens. But I always have a hard time deciding between that and the chille relleños... and yes there are plenty of choices for nonvegetarians as well. Although I'm always full by the end of my meal it's really hard to resist the Mexican chocolate mousse or the flan! It's so sweet that at the right time of year you can sit outside, and the inside is kind of small but they take advantage of every nook and cranny and it's really cozy. I've never felt uncomfortable in there, quite the opposite actually. The ambience wraps the food with the cultural flavor of mariachis and more. If you are blessed and get to come to Orcas Island don't miss this incredible culinary delight. You won't regret it read more

The host was pleasant. Our food was slowwwww to arrive. My daughter's burrito looked like someone attempted to shape a burrito into a cheeseburger without the cheese. My fish was bad, as in spoiled. I've been going to Mijitas ever year during my annual Orcas visit for as long as I can remember... and my review definitely needed an update! Not that the experience has changed that much overall, I enjoy the ambience and outdoor seating in the summer + their margaritas! My family and I made an outdoor reservation for 4 people on a Saturday (during Covid) and had to wait 5 minutes or so for our table to be ready, no big deal. We were seated on the side of the restaurant at a long bar table a generous distance from other diners, which worked out. I remember the last visit or two the chips and salsa weren't that great and this remained true this time around. I tasted the salsa once and opted to just eat the chips plain. The chips weren't as crisp as I would have liked but I wanted to munch on something while I sipped on my margarita and waited for my meal. For drinks I went with the pure margarita served up in a martini-like glass... and opted for a double because hey why not? A double was a little steep at $22, but dang it was good! A nice balance of tart and sweet, plus I could taste the tequila, yay. Because a double wouldn't fit in a martini glass, our friendly waiter brought out the whole shaker so that I could refill once there was room (and let me tell you I made room real quick since I sucked my first glassful down, whoops). Now I was still full from my late lunch, so I decided to go with the Mijitas Chopped Salad ($14), a plate of local salad greens, black beans, cherry tomatoes, jicama, corn, roasted peppers, queso fresco, tortilla strips & guacamole with honey-lime vinaigrette. I asked for no cheese (trying to be mostly plant-based over here) and the lighter option ended up being perfect. I enjoyed the crisp, fresh jicama, although I would have enjoyed a little more substance in the form of corn and beans. My mom ordered the salad and enjoyed it even more than I did, and my sister really liked her Grilled Fish Tacos ($16). I did get a bite of her taco and was a fan of the sauce, although the fish could have been a little better. It was by no means bad though. My dad seemed to enjoy his Carne Asada ($24). In the future I'd probably go with my regular vegetarian Quinoa Cakes served with chipotle sweet potato mash and local salad greens ($16)... plus another double margarita served up! They turned on the heat lamp although I was warm enough with my jacket and booze blanket. The place was reasonably full (for Covid standards) and cleared out a bit by the time we left.
