This place is an absolute delight! They have quality coffee from Victrola coffee roasters in Seattle. Easily one of the best roasters in the region. We walked into this place and these employees were slammed but made a total positive attitude out of everything. I order the same drink at every coffee shop for easy comparison and the Brown Bear barista made it perfectly- the espresso shots were timed appropriately and the flavor was well balanced. Their pasteries looked incredible but we were unable to try them as we had unfortunately eaten breakfast before going here. I'm looking forward to returning to try out their baked goods. So many different items looked tasty and everyone who ordered them had positive things to say about the food. While waiting around for our drinks to come out we were able to check out all the cool swag that they sell. We bought an awesome shirt. Their designs are simply well done. I don't think I can ever eat another scone again since I have eaten the most delicious currant scone (STRAIGHT OUTTA THE OVEN) that has ever existed. All other scones will turn to ash in my mouth! Everything from the coffee, to the salmon quiche, to the breads and baked goods, was at the apex of deliciousness. The staff was very nice and patient (had a credit card issue) and the baker was super friendly and seemed to know and anticipate the preferences of many of the customers.It's also worth mentioning that the bakery itself was impeccably clean and appointed. There are several things that I would consider myself a 'snob' about. Bread, pastries, and other baked goods are something I am overly critical about because I am so particular about them. I was recently vacationing on Orcas Island, so when I saw so many glowing reviews of Brown Bear, I was compelled to check it out. Food (Breads, pastries, etc.): First of all, I didn't eat here once, I did not eat here twice; rather, I ate here on three separate occasions while on Orcas Island. Never in my life have I ever been a repeat customer at a location so frequently, in such a short period of time. The first day I ate the Ham and Cheese Croissant. It is a beautiful, golden-brown, flaky croissant stuffed with succulent ham and (I believe) a mild Swiss cheese. The croissant was perfect. I have eaten croissants in England, New York, and dozens of other places and this will be the croissant that haunts my dreams forever (in a good way). In addition to the ham and cheese croissant which had a perfect balance of salt, savory, and sweet flavors; we also ordered the vegetable quiche, a sasquatch cookie, and a blueberry muffin. The cookie may have been the last impressive thing, but it was still delicious, boasting a crispy, yet tender dough, and generously filled with multiple delectable items. It has a wonderful caramelized flavor. The blueberry muffin was a blueberry muffin, but it was moist, flavorful, and not overly-sweet like so many. Again, awesome balance. The vegetable quiche was, again, very well balanced and very well seasoned. If I lived in the area, I could see myself stopping by on my way to work several times per week to grab one and go. The next two trips included the purchase of the chocolate stuffed croissant, and a muffin-like pastry that had a crispy, salty-sweet exterior, and a doughy, creamy interior. I can't remember what this is called for the life of me; but if an angel took a poop, this would be the result. A heavenly pastry that hits on all the key notes in your mouth -- salty, savory, creamy, sweet. Food: I've never had better in the bread/pastry category 5 / 5 Service: Attaining a five star rating from me is hard because so many places screw-up the easiest part of a meal -- the service. Not at Brown Bear. Everyone was extremely pleasant, helpful, and kind. They were quick with the service, polite, and expedient. I did detect a hint of arrogance or pretentiousness; but with a product this good, I can easily overlook that. I would enjoy doing business with the staff at Brown Bear again. Service: 4 / 5 Atmosphere: It is a quaint, little store-front with very little seating and room to maneuver around the line of people always extending out of the doorway. Despite that though, it is within that fact that creates a certain level of charm. You know, a small-town bakery that is always packed full of locals and tourists alike trying to fight their way to the front of the line to indulge in some of the best baked goods you'll ever have. For me, that added to the overall experience and mystique of the place. Lastly, it is an open-kitchen environment. While you are there, you can directly into the kitchen at the staff diligently working on the next batch. It just has a great feel to it. Do not think you will get a seat, and if you do, do not expect to have meaningful conversations with the people around you. On each of our trips to Brown Bear, we opted to take everything to-go, and eat in our car, or stop and sit in another area outside. Atmosphere: 5 / 5 Price: For what you get, which is the best baked goods and pastries you will ever have, it is a solid 5. In fact, they could charge more, and I would pay more. That is the definition of a 5 star price. Price: 5 / 5 Overall: If you are looking to discover a true gem, filled with comforting sights, sounds, and incredible food, then you need to come to Brown Bear. If you have ever had a bad experience at Brown Bear, I would truly be shocked, and would urge you to try it again. As I previously mentioned, if I lived even remotely close to Brown Bear, I would make a special trip here once in a while. If I lived locally, I would be here several times per week. read more

I'm totally jumping on the bandwagon and giving them 5 stars! When we were here over 4th of July weekend, it was clear that this bakery was popular with everyone on the island, because it was always crowded but they seemed to move quickly through the line, which was nice. We visited this place 3 times over the weekend, grabbing snacks or something more substantial for a later light meal. The selection varies by day and by time, so you never know what you're able to order when you get there, but all the options are really good so it's okay! There wasn't anything bad that we tried, but my favorites were the sticky salty bun (forgot the name, but it's African sounding? - it's so good people!), the Sasquatch cookie (again, so delicious and despite it's large size, you should get two), the croque monsieur (super creamy), and the quiches (we ordered both a salmon and a ham one). I'm very much looking forward to my next visit to Orcas so that I can partake in the pastries at Brown Bear once again. Definitely adding this to my list of must-visit places when I'm on the island. read more

This place has amazing coffee, amazing pastries, and a super friendly staff. I had a vanilla soy latte and it was out of this world. Their yogurt parfaits are to die for and I had one of their orange rolls and it was so delicious (and covered in granules of sugar, yum!). The place is supremely popular, so the line can get long, but it moves fast! The staff are awesome, the prices are great, and there is a lot of outdoor seating for those sunny, summer days. I wish Brown Bear was much closer to where I live because I would likely go there every weekend. So good!! read more

This place is just wonderful. We took a winter trip to orcas and literally had nothing to do but hang out in the rain, our hotel room, or eat. We choose the latter!:) Except one downside... The island isn't so active this time of year. Many places have very limited hours or close completely during the off season. This place was just a warm oasis for the senses. We went there three days in a row and loved the chocolate muffin and the almond croissant. They also serve Victrola coffee roasters here and do a fine barista job in making it. The place is busy because they are clearly a success but well worth any short wait you may have. Also, very friendly service! My husband and I were visiting Orcas Island for the weekend. I wanted breakfast, but not really the eggs, bacon, toast breakfast. We found this bakery and I was excited as soon as we walked in! The smell was incredible and the open concept allowing you to see in the kitchen as they were baking was pretty awesome. It was cozy, but modern. My husband wasn't planning to get anything until he walked in and smelled the place. He got the almond croissant and I got a orange puff croissant. Both were delicious! Flaky crusts, soft tasty breading on the inside. The almond croissant had chunks on almond paste in the middle, which was delicious and the croissant had a distinct almond flavor without being overpowering. The orange croissant was equally delicious. It was sprinkled with a orange sugar and was a flaky, pull apart croissant. We also got a loaf of the sunflower and sesame seed bread to take home with us, which we have been thoroughly enjoying. Scratch baking! What isn't to love about that?! We got here early on Saturday after Thanksgiving. So glad they opened before we had to leave. The store has a lovely ambiance. I love the group style seating with the long tables. We met some wonderful locals while we were eating our breakfast. The people who work here are super friendly. It seemed like this is a locals joint, where people do know each other and catch up inside. I like finding gems like this when we're traveling. Prices are also very reasonable. Open kitchen that you can look right into. It seems like they are always baking a fresh batch of something while you sit there and eat. Get the bread pudding. It is the best bread pudding I've ever had. The scones are no joke either. Okay, so why only the 3-stars? Because as I was munching my Sasquatch cookie at home later and was almost done, I found a hair. Aurgh! I was so happy with my cookie up until that point too. The fact that my girlfriend and I spent half the day kayaking is the only way I can justify the amount of food we ate at Brown Bear Baking last Saturday. From the variety of croissants to the tarts to the muffins to the quiche, we continued to venture back and forth from our seats to the counter to try something new. Everything we had was wonderful, and if you spend even a few minutes in the store you quickly notice all of the fine touches that went into making Brown Bear something special. Everyone behind the counter were so helpful, suggesting great pairings and going out of their way to make sure we got what we wanted. They even took a special order for us Saturday night to pick up Sunday morning to guarantee it. Don't be afraid to try anything you see. You'll be pleasantly surprised. If you're vegetarian/vegan they have plenty of options to cover you as well. When we got in my sister asked if there was a menu to which the front counter person rudely replied that it's visual and motioned to the goods in the case. This place is boss. We ate here twice during our stay on Orcas. Friday for lunch we had homemade clam chowder, a ham sandwich, and some quiche. Saturday I had leek and ham quiche and a savory sage scone. Hnnngg all items were soooo delicious! It's a bit pricier than you would think just looking on Yelp. We spent ~$30 on our lunch on Friday and around ~$25 on Saturday. It's also very dog friendly! We brought our pup and sat outside with him in these cute orange chairs. Staff is so friendly and accommodating and will take the time to answer all your questions even though only one party can order at a time, which makes the small place pretty crowded during peak hours. Coffee was on point as well. I had an iced latte and it was perfect. I recommend sitting on the porch, weather permitting and just watch the world go by for a while :) This cafe is pretty much in the center of Eastsound and it's fun to walk around the area after eating! P.S. I meant to try their chocolate muffin!! It's supposed to be the best but I forgot on Friday and they didn't have any on Saturday. So try it for me haha :) read more

I had a large extra chocolate mocha coffee was one of the best coffee I've had in months. Absolutely amazing. We came here both days we were over in Orcas. The staff was very pleasant, friendly, engaged us in conversation and remembered us the next day. So, we tried a lot of things between 6 people over 2 days - the quiche was outstanding. Very rich, perfectly cooked, and beautiful. Full of flavor and additions. The savory scone was amazing as well - the flavors were just excellent. The pain au chocolat was very good - it was a little too dry for our tastes; not quite as much pull and chew and buttery flavor as we like. The pecan sticky bun was very sticky and fun to eat but not too sweet which was a pleasant surprise. The sasquatch cookie was good, a little on the crisp side. The bear claw was fantastic - the perfect balance of flavors, gigantic, and beautiful. The morning bun - OH MY GOD. Exceptional. Just perfect in every way. Buy 12. Eat them all. Repeat. Mmmm good! We stopped in for breakfast on our first day at Orcas Island and came back on our second day. We had the Quiche and my husband said it was the best he ever ate. You could taste the vegetables, he exulted. This said, he isn't a big Quiche or veggie eater!! Over the two days, we sampled the croissant, plain and sweet with apricot and the one filled with ham. We loved the food, the bakers/co-owners and the beautiful garden. I was even invited to come and help but unfortunately we had to leave. Just wish I had had the time and learned something from this awesome bakery. We spoke with one of the owners and he was just as nice a could be and explained to us what makes their Quiche special. I can't wait to go back again and try the rest of the pastries! Must try! Found this cute little bakery when traveling through to Mt. Constitution. Decent shots of espresso and awesome baked goods! I had the spinach & feta croissant, which had a light and crisp top layer. Each layer beneath got softer and softer until reaching the well mixed and evenly spread feta/spinach mixture. The taste wasn't butter, or spinach, or feta, or party....the taste was a well combined mixture of all the things that a good pastry should be. I have no plans to return to Orcas Island any time soon, but if I do, rest assured I'll be back! read more
