I am not from the area, but when we moved here, everyone talked about Brooklyn Pickle in a fond way so my husband and I thought to check it out to see what all the fuss was about. They took an old building and repurposed it, which I thought was really neat. The inside has a relaxed, hip cafeteria vibe that made me excited to try their food. The format is pretty standard, you go to the counter, order, then wait off to the side as they make your sandwich or whatever it is that you ordered. I got in line and there were two people waiting in front of me. There were four people working behind the counter and they were all talking to each other like we were not there, joking around, laughing obnoxiously. They all tried avoiding eye contact with us, which was really odd. There was even one girl prepping vegetables and facing our direction and still nothing, no "Someone will be with you in a bit" or maybe she could have stopped prepping since taking orders when there are patrons is more of a priority. One of the employees was sweeping. I kid you not, the people in front of us waited about 10 minutes, which meant that we were finally ordering 15 minutes in, at which point I was furious. The making of the sandwiches took another 10 minutes, raising my furiosity level to a place where my husband had to tell me to sit down. After I sat down, I started to calm down a bit and told myself, "Ok, their food will be good. No, it had BETTER be good. No, it had better be the best thing I've ever eaten." The food finally came and boy, was it mediocre. The bread was cold and slightly soggy, the kind of sliced brown bread you buy at the supermarket, and the chicken noodle soup was mostly broth, lacking chicken and noodle. It was basically like a sandwich I could make at home. The thing that angered me the most were the pickles. They're called "Brooklyn Pickle", so I thought the pickles would be special. Boy was I wrong. The pickles were small and sliced, coin style, and looked dark and unfresh, like they were sitting in a jar of pickling for a very long time. They tasted even worse than they looked, super sour. In conclusion, I think if it weren't for the extremely long wait and rude employees, I would have given them 3 stars for the mediocre food. The terrible service raised my expectations for the quality of the food, which I know, doesn't make any rational sense, if the food was going to be bad, it was going to be bad regardless, but GAH waiting for no apparent reason makes the mind irrational. This place was all-rite. The pickles were certainly the best part, but not much to right home about. The food was ok, but the prices are pretty good. A half sandy and salad will run you just around 6. Generous servings and they have dark rye. I had a capicola sandwich with Russian dressing and onion lettuce and tomato, but the sandwich flavor was just over powered by the onion. The macaroni salad had a generous helping of paprika, but generally lacked flavor. The sit down atmosphere was comfortable. Might go back again if I was hungry and not wanting to spend much cash. read more

I visited Syracuse on business 2 years ago and was taken to the "Pickle" for lunch. I was warned to go hungry, or wrap half to go. They were right then, the sandwich as great (and huge.). I went last night on another visit to Syracuse and was quite disappointed. Granted, it was a Monday evening, about a half hour before closing, and it was not busy like lunchtime. I ordered an Italian sub with oil & vinegar, lettuce, tomato, oniions salt, pepper, oregano. (I'm from New England.) There were 2 pieces of cheese, maybe 3 slices of salami and some shredded ham. While there was lots of lettuce, the rest for the sandwich was pretty flavor-free. It was no better than Subwayon the Thruway. read more

One of the few places you can find an egg and olive sandwich, and it's wonderful. The Neptune soup is pretty awesome as well! My husband loves this place and picks them over all others. I am actually not a fan of their pickles however, and their staff is usually not paying attention to the customers are busy talking to each other. The Brooklyn Pickle has always been a solid go to deli. I recently stopped in after a long absence and found that what makes the place unique had not changed. They have a great online ordering system. Your meal is ready at the time you want to pick it up. That is a great service. I had the turkey on whole wheat which was flavorful, a great sandwich. I tried their potato salad. It was also very tasty. I've also tried their subs in the past which are great. They offer soups and salads as well. read more

I am not from NY. I am not a deli sandwich aficionado. I like the Brooklyn Pickle. Step right up and order a half and full sandwich from the large list of turkey, roast beef, pastrami sandwiches. I ordered the Brooklyn Pickle sandwich which I believe was turkey roast beef and pastrami. I liked it alot. I've had the crab soup before and thought it was great. I like this place. Try it out. Decent sandwiches. Huge portions. Not the best ingredients but sometimes you have to disregard quality of ingredients with quality of grit. I love the food at Brooklyn Pickle. Although I don't love the pickles, the sandwiches are always heaping with portions of meat that shame most other sandwich places. They have a delicious variety of soups and even some pastas. I LOVE the Friday Mac n cheese!!! Yummy!! Nice homemade flavor with lots of cheese all throughout. Lots of chip varieties and sodas or other drinks. The rice pudding and big fresh baked cookies are all so delicious!! The salads and subs are about the only two things I found so-so. All the rest is worth it. It is very fast paced at lunch time. Despite the long line ... you'll be lucky if you can decide what you actually want before you're up to order. I was super excited for a new york deli, but it was just a regular sandwich. I had the Brooklyn Pickle and my husband had the roast beef sub. Eh, it's ok. The bread for the BP was gummy in the center and I spent more time scraping it off my teeth than eating the sandwich. We also ordered a dill pickle. I only had one bite. Didn't taste like any dill pickle I've ever had before. We could get the same sandwiches anywhere else. read more

I just took a bite of a corned beef sandwich on dark rye and was very very disappointed. The meat had no flavor and was shaved very thin. It did not resemble corned beef in any way. I called them to make sure that I was not given some sort of fake corned beef made of turkey. It had that gelatin look that meats from a grocery deli have. I would have expected more from a deli named Brooklyn Pickle. The half sandwich cost a little over $4 with 3 pickle slices and only 3 ounces of meat (I weighed it). The meat was shaved so it would look like more. NOT A GOOD VALUE AND NOT A GOOD SANDWICH! I was there years back and I remember the sandwich being much better. Oh Well. read more

I have been going there since 1983 when it was a small shack in what is now the parking lot on Burnett. I moved out of Syracuse after graduating from LeMoyne, but any trip down the I-90 requires a detour down the 690 for a treat! I really enjoy the dark rye with Russian dressing and the Italian tomatoes. Seriously, get the Italian tomatoes. Diced tomatoes and onion in a vinaigrette. YUM! I usually get a roast beef and corned beef mix. Yes, the bread is soft and will not travel well especially if you get the marinated tomatoes. Have them put mayo on both slices of bread and this will buy you some time. I know this because everyone at home loves their sandwiches and I always have to bring a dozen home in a cooler. If you go at lunch there will be a line (for a reason) , but it moves right along. read more

Nice sammiches. The signature sandwich is damn tasty: finely sliced corned beef and pastrami that melts in your mouth, tangy Russian dressing, fresh salad. Awkwardly crammed into a sub, but there's no shame in using a fork to pick at the deliciousness. You'd pay nearly as much at a Subway and get only about half as much food, and they don't have a tasty pickle to cleanse the pallet. I've yet to find a better sandwich shop in Syracuse. read more

I have been going to Brooklyn pickle for years but haven't gone in a while because they got skimpy with their meat. I went in the other day and ordered a whole turkey sub. They proceeded to sprinkle the turkey on in a very thin layer giving me almost no turkey. I asked why there was so little turkey and they responded that they only put 1/4lb (4oz) of turkey on a full sub and a messily 2oz on a half. I talked to the manager and he told the employee to just give me more meat if I think there is not enough. The employee proceeded to tell me that she did put enough meat on and would not add more per the managers instructions. I have been going to this place since I was a child and I don't think I will return unless they get there act together and learn some customer service skills. read more

Disappointing. Grew up in the NYC area and actually worked a lunch counter in Manhattan in the 60's. NEVER would have served a pastrami sandwich cold and without a pickle. Though the portions are generous, the menu is very limited. And where's the bagels with lox and cream cheese? Anybody that thinks that this is Brooklyn has never been there. Sorry. I must say that I like there sandwiches. This is a place that is covered with cops eating lunch, and every other government worker so they must be doing something right. What I don't like and trust is the fact that "There" cash Registers are Always OPen. What does this mean you say. I know a hundred other restaurants, eateries and sandwich shops who pay there TAXES and by never ever ringing up a order, they never have to say how much they sold. Plain and simple they are tax cheats and I know it. They have said because they want to be able to have change quick but that's ridiculous as the owner stands by the registers and they yell out how much it costs and what denomination they have in hand. They actually charge for Cheese and tomatoes. Who charges extra for these staples. Sandwich meat is not as good as it once was and with a soda and salad your meal is $15.00 no wonder so many people are leaving the state of New York. A couple weeks ago I called to order a sandwich for pick up & no one answered... I decided to give them another shot and I wish I didnt! I called in an order and my mom had called in an order. When I arrived there were 4 employees and not one acknowledged ny existence. 2 were doing absolutely nothing and finally asked if I was there for a pick up while I was standing in the pick up spot.. obviously I was there for a pick up! When I said I was there to pick up 2 different orders she said they only had 1 order. She called the other location and my mom had called her order in there. I asked if they could just make the sandwich here since it was just a turkey sandwich. She said no that it was their policy to not make sandwiches that were ordered at the other location since the sandwich was already made there!!! She was so rude about it! She told me I had to go pick it up from the other location and said it was only 5 minutes away. HAH more like 10-15 minutes.
