I went to this gym for about 3 years, mostly using the cardio equipment. Liked: mellow vibe, not crowded 10-11am, very decent locker room, and loved the 3rd floor yoga studio with view of park for stretching after work out. Disliked: terrible ventilation/climate control (asked if they could install fan, but they said nah), music too loud (had to wear earplugs), and the final straw: they rented out the yoga studio, so there is no quiet, out of the way place to stretch. Ended my membership and joined Grindhouse, which is cheaper, has good AC and high ceilings, plenty of machines, music not too loud, and has an OK place to stretch-- alas with no views. read more

I need to come back for class. I came just to get a workout in but did not take my night too seriously. I did 30 min on the stationary bike and 30 on the treadmill . I was ecstatic to see a stairclimber aka stair master machine but it was occupied. The locker room is narrrow and awkwardly built but you won't spend much time in there. There are 3 floors including an infinity pool The front desk staff was very nice and everyone seemed serious about working out. I must return for a group fitness class. I could spend hours at BAC, their facility is a workout haven with three floors full of jam packed fitness fun. They have rooftop yoga classes, two private endless pools, group and private saunas and plenty of workout equipment. I purchased a day pass to try out their private infrared sauna and it was well worth it. You get an hour access to a private sauna room, fully equipped with toiletries and a private shower. The sauna itself is equipped with a media system which includes Netflix and Pandora. It was cool to jam out to my fav tunes while detoxing. They are part of the Mind Body family so booking any of their workout classes, or a pool or sauna session is super easy. My experinece at Brooklyn Athletic Club was interesting. There were mutiple pros and one con....Overall, I enjoyed the time spent here within this place. It was important for me to give an review once I ended the entire sauna session package. Let me start from the beginning: My sweetheart of a daughter purchased Brooklyn Athletic Club's Groupon deal as part of my Mother's Day Gift in May. This package gave me three 50 Minute-Private Sauna Sessions. I thoroughly enjoy saunas, steam rooms etc. so I was excited! Here is the breakdown: 1st Session- I arrived early and was told to sit in the front area as they prepared the private sauna area. Once I walked inside, I thought that it was so cool! Inside if the private room is your own bathroom/toilet area, a shower stall, a bench to ace your personal items , a shelf with towels and your private sauna. The sauna is so cute as it seats one person inside at a time and it has a mini radio and small flat screen tv. Yay!!!....So I got into the sauna and thought that I would be able to listen music, watch Netflix or YouTube (their is Internet access) etc. What?!....both the radio volume and the tv was not working. I was already comfortably in the sauna so I decided to remain there and just play music and videos from my cell phone. After completing the sauna session, I spoke to a nice worker at the front desk who apologized for the issue with the radio and TV and said that it would be fixed when I come back for the next session. 2nd Session- I spoke to a different staffperson at the front desk about the radio and TV situation that occurred during the last session. They explained that they are not sure but that they think that everything should be working. Of course once I got in there, it was still not working. They told me that they do not know how to make the radio and TV operable. So, I just used my cell phone again. By the way, the sauna itself is magnificent! 3rd Session- By this point I have already called and spoke to the manager prior to coming into Brooklyn Athletic Club. The manager informed me that technically the Groupon only guarantees that you get a sauna session which is with a workable sauna and does not necessarily guarantee that the things in the sauna are operable like the radio and tv. What?!..Ok....However, he exuded quality customer service by giving me an additional Sauna Session for free. I thanked him. The tv was working (I did not try the radio this time) and enjoyed some YouTube videos while thoroughly enjoying the sauna at the same time. Session 4- This was the final session and I had it on Tuesday September 26th. Yes, I know Mother's Day was in May but I wanted to stretch out the package to the best of my ability!-lol. The most recent session was the best....why? Yes you guessed it because both the radio and tv worked! So that meant I was able to remain inside the private sauna for the entire 50 minutes because the radio and TV inside the sauna were operable and I could turn each one off/on at anytime. I have to say that the sauna itself was great each and everytime. Sweating out toxins, having healthier glowing skin and feeling relaxed occurred each session....Thank You Brooklyn Athletic Club for your kindness, courtesy and generosity! Speaking to the receptionist at the front deal the other day, she told me that the private sauna sessions are usually $35 and a 1O Day Sauna Session Package is $240. I am thinking about coming on a pay as you go basis....I will figure it out soon and return for more sauna sessions! read more

I came for a 50 minute infrared sauna therapy session via Classpass. This review is just for the sauna. The machine is a Sunlighter MPulse and has a Wifi enabled interactive console with Google, Netflix, Hulu, etc. The technology appears to be state of the art. Private room with shower was hygienic and clean. Within 10 minutes you'll start to sweat although the heat never gets unsufferable. You will exit with your glow up from the flo' up. With regularity, I can see the benefits of taking a sit. :) read more

I've been going to this gym for a few months now, but I haven't seen many reviews on how it is for Olympic weightlifting yet. I thought I'd leave a review on my experience here so far. Their setup is awesome, with 6 hardwood platforms with infinity racks that span all of them. They have all the standard kg bumpers and nice 15 / 20 kg bars available. There's two power racks on the first floor and many more on the second, and they all have safeties. The first floor doesnt usually get very crowded except for a couple days during which there are classes between 6-8 but even then, you should be able to find a place to lift. If you're looking for coaching, Coach Joey runs two 90min sessions a week and provides exercises for a third session in the week. The first day is usually focused on snatch and the second on clean and jerk. There's a heavy emphasis on proper form, and I've found it to be an excellent environment for someone who is still learning the lifts. Usually there's no more than 6 people in the class, so each person gets plenty of individual attention. Lastly, I just want to mention how great the weightlifting community is here! Everyone I've met is pretty dedicated to the sport and super welcoming of new lifters. I've been given a few tips from others that have really helped me get better. read more

BAC has impressed me from my first week to my current training schedule. I definitely wasn't someone who ever went to the gym 5 days a week or took fitness classes too seriously but now I find myself really enjoying it! The locker facilities are also always stocked with fresh towels and super clean which is very important to me. I want to start off by saying Kasadee that operates BK Pilates out of this space (3rd floor) is Absolutely Amazing. I've taken 20 private classes with her since December. If I didn't already adore her, I would NEVER go back to this gym. Larry the gym owner is nasty person. He aggressively berated me in front of other gym members/employees when I started to head upstairs to Pilates because I didn't check in at the front desk. I've walked past the front desk 20 times since December. Not once had anyone greeted me, acknowledge my presence or asked me if I was a member or where I was going. To make matters worse, as I was leaving after my Pilates, Larry again lectured and harassed me about the situation very aggressively. Word of advice Larry, train your front staff to do their job, meet and greet people. Learn how to be respectful of your customers and never be aggressive when approaching a women (or anyone for that matter). read more

I. LOVE. THIS. GYM. I'm a convert from Equinox and I can't say enough good things about this place. While I've gotta admit that Equinox has 'em beat on the amenities, the vibes and people here totally outweigh any chilled echinacea towels. They've also got an infrared sauna in the locker room + two private ones you can rent out, which is way better than the steam room at the 'nox. But above all, the trainers and the people who train here are amazing. I've taken Bravo's strength class (great), Juan's kettlebell class (great) and trained 1-on-1 with Paul (insanely amazing) and I can't say enough good things about all of them. I've also worked with Kaseedee doing Pilates sessions and she's a rockstar. It's fun to come here because everyone knows who you are, the atmosphere is chill/not intimidating and you feel like you're doing work that counts and getting real attention on your form. Can't say the same about the overpacked classes down the street. The only thing I'm sad about is that I wasted a year and a half working out at other places until I found BAC. I've been working out with personal trainer, Allison, at Brooklyn Athletic Club for 6 months now. While I've never written a review on Yelp/Google before, I felt this was a reason to break that silence. Working with Allison has been an amazing experience, and she has helped me achieve a number of personal goals, including helping me build strength and muscle to power me through hiking Mount Washington in September. Allison has been supportive, flexible and most of all consistently growing and increasing my routines. She started me with simple floor work with body and hand weights and after building my confidence there has me now lifting some intimidating sized weights on leg press and barbells. My body has never felt better! Allison has also given me so many options for modifications that I'm now confident in working out independently, without injury, and with limited equipment no matter where I am. This review is just for the Infrared Sauna I'm a classpass user and have been coming here pretty consistently for the past 3 months. I like to come here to relax after a long week or an intense workout. I always leave feeling very refreshed. The location has 2 Sunlighten mPulse private saunas, with a shower, towels, body wash/shampoo and everything you could need. You don't need to bring anything but yourself and maybe a pair of flip flops for the shower. With classpass you get 60 minutes to do your sauna thing & shower. My only beef is Room 2s touch screen is broken so you cannot adjust the sauna temperature or experience the amenities of Room 1. Room 1 allows you to play music, adjust the temperature, pick the planes that you'd like the heat to come out of, use the internet, set up a profile etc. Out of the 6 times I've come here, I've only gotten Room #2 once, and while it was fine, I think not being able to adjust the temperature can be dangerous. I left that day feeling really faint, as the temp was 140+, and I didn't stay the full duration of the hour because I couldn't handle that much heat. If it's fixed, definitely a 5 star experience. My review is long over due. I did personal training with Peggy beginning of this year 2017, She is a very knowledgeable and motivating. I have never been as fit as I was when training with Peggy. I would always get very sore with other trainers and be afraid to return because of the pain. But not with Peggy, her soreness felt great! She made me feel very comfortable and great about myself. Everyone in the gym is friendly and welcoming. Azuka is another trainer at BAC who runs Mass classes, He's an awesome trainer and hes classes were great to take when I wasn't training with Peggy. So a year and a half ago I decided to get my physical health back in shape (pun intended) and signed up at BAC for one-on-one training. The trainer I was assigned is Bravo and he's hands-down the best trainer/coach I've worked with in my years of off and on training. I rolled into this place 175 lbs skinny fat and I'm now walking around 200 lbs and STRONG. Upside: feeling great, looking good (subjective!) and deadlifting 300+ lbs where before I would have snapped my spine attempting to lift a suitcase. Plus, Bravo occasionally dances the Cha-Cha while I'm working out. Downside: I've had to basically buy a whole new wardrobe for the 25 lbs of muscle mass I've gained as a result of working with Bravo. Worse problems to have I suppose? Bonus: the facility is great, isn't all glam like an Equinox but isn't all bro'd out like some Crossfit spot. It's got a great environment that just makes you wanna put in WORK. Larry, the owner, is always around and runs a great ship, the rest of the staff is super fun and every workout is always a good time. Highly recommend. read more

I had a terrible experience with the manager of this gym. I bought a package of infrared sauna sessions from Groupon and was told by multiple employees the sessions would never expire. After finishing a television job I decided I would like to go use the infrared sauna since I had been working long hours and I wanted to relax. I paid for these session Yet I was denied usage. The manger became very hostile on the phone with me and told me he never made any money from the groupon infrared sauna sessions they sold and I could not use the sauna unless I wanted to repurchase the sessions from a different retailer. I had to remind him I was the customer and had no part of his negotiations with Groupon. However it did not seem to matter to him. I would like to add the gym is filled of meat heads and the entire time I was in the sauna (I did go twice) I only heard the sound of barbells crashing on a mat 24/7. Not forth the time or money. And the manager has a "I'm right, not the customer" attitude. read more

Brooklyn Athletic Club ('BAC') is the premier training facility in Williamsburg. It is a one-stop centralized location for getting a wide range of workouts for total body fitness. As a fitness enthusiast, I am so glad to have access to BAC. I've known owner Larry Betz for about six years; his passion an dedication for fitness are evident in how much work he has put in to launching BAC. Everything from the blueprint of the facility down to the details of the equipment reflects his commitment to physical fitness. Here are some of the best things that BAC offers: 1. Group strength training classes: The first floor features astroturf that is perfect for agility drills and other workouts. Sandbags, kettle-bells, dumbbells, battle ropes, sleds, Jungle Gym XT (similar to TRX), boxes for box jumps, and 'ladders' for agility drills are all an arms length away. The BAC trainers will kick your butt while creating a positive group atmosphere in these classes. 2. Endless swimming pool: the basement features two endless swimming pools. These are fantastic for getting a low-impact workout. The best thing about the endless swimming pool is that you can really focus on your form and not have to worry about doing a flip turn every time you reach the end of the pool. Also, the current is fully adjustable so can can swim slow or swim fast. BAC even thought to put mirrors at the bottom of the pools, so that you can watch your form and correct it accordingly. 3. Full gym: The second floor features a full gym-- the type that you normally pay $100/month for membership. I've probably been a member of about 15 gyms in my life, and this is the nicest of them all. It's because owner Larry Betz bought only bought the very best equipment. Some of the equipment features details that I didn't even know existed. For example, I always found it a little frustrating on the bench press when I would lower the barbell and it would hit the metal pieces meant to hold up the barbell. At BAC, the equipment has solved the problem by holding the barbell on a hinged system that moves out of the way when you remove the barbell. It's a small detail, but it shows the conscious decision to only buy the best equipment. The treadmills are also fantastic. I don't recall the name of the brand, but they feel like you are running outdoors rather than on a treadmill. 4. Other classes: I haven't tried the spin and yoga classes yet. They are somewhat infrequent at the moment, but I believe BAC is going to start rolling them out more frequently soon. read more

Just visited this gym at 1:30PM today for it's "Grand Opening," and wasn't greeted, welcomed, or even acknowledged during our brief visit. We passed two employees manning an empty table out front, and two employees at a desk inside on the first floor (all of whom were doing nothing), and not one of these individuals paid us any mind or even opened their mouth to question why we were there as we walked in to check out the gym. You'd think someone would wonder why two non-gym-attired guys without gym bags were walking by/around? Especially during a supposed grand opening celebration? Yeah, not so much. We stayed a few minutes looking around, but lost interest quickly given the obviously disinterested staff and the multiple limitations of the first floor (one of which was how to get to the other floors). As we walked out, we looked at both the desk staff and the table staff again (we even paused in front of the latter to see if there were any flyers or information on said table, which there weren't) and we walked off. After we were about a quarter way down the block, someone called after us "do you want to see the upstairs?" LOL. Really?! Now you decide to engage us?? Seriously: LOL/FAIL. This gym could've gained two members. Instead it gained two stars. Quite a trade off, eh? read more

I've been going to BAC for 6 months now, and couldn't be happier! The group training classes are incredible, and I love that the instructors actually pay attention and give feedback. They don't overload the classes, so you really get that one-on-attention and an incredible workout. Everyone there is super kind, its like a big family. Cant say enough good things about this gym. BAC is, in all simplicity, a gorgeous gym that offers one of the better exercise experiences in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, but with some caveats. Within their four floors they have saunas, endless pools, group training/weightlifting classes, a yoga studio that overlooks Brooklyn, a spin studio, a spa, and they have babysitters! But even with some of the luxuries of higher end gyms such as Equinox, BAC manages to stand out because the sole focus here is fitness. The equipment is top-notch, the group training instructors will challenge you with unique exercises, and everything is immaculately clean, new, and ready to use. In addition, I've never had to wait to use a machine. I've been a member for a few months and the gym is hardly ever packed. I absolutely love that. And I am a huge fan of the 90s hip hop and alternative rock that they play. BAC loses two stars for a couple minor yet semi-important issues, and one major issue. First, I've been given conflicting information regarding the equipment on the main floor. I've been told that we can use it, but sometimes I've been told that we cannot use it. I know that this floor is primarily used for group classes, but it would be great if we could use some of the equipment when it's not in use. And in relation to this, there is a general lack of ab/core equipment on the gym floor and more importantly, in the yoga studio, which also serves as a stretching room. They could really use basic things such as stability balls, core rollers, medicine balls, balance trainers, stability discs, etc. and some of this stuff can only be found on the main floor. This serves a nice segue to the major problem: their standard gym membership, which only gives you access to the tiny gym floor and classes, is sort of steep for what you get. The gym floor is tiny and it's missing a lot of equipment that you get with a standard membership at any other gym. BAC is a good place to work out, but I do hope they expand the space so that they can add more standard gym equipment. Otherwise, members should be allowed to use the floor where classes take place to make up for the lack of equipment. read more

I have been going to Brooklyn Athletic Club for 3 weeks now and really love it. I had been working out in my small apartment's gym and wanted a full-service gym with more barbells and equipment to do more compound lifts. I met with Paul (the head trainer) and asked about personal training. After hearing my goals, Paul suggested I do semi-private training as it was much less expensive and he thought I would get more out of it. I greatly appreciate the fact that Paul consciously thought about how he could save me money while achieving all my goals. I have been going BAC and doing the semi-private training for 3 weeks now and I can only say positive things. I feel very confident in all my heavy lifts, and feel the training I have received is top notch. Particularly, Paul and Bravo are amazing trainers, very encouraging, and make me excited to wake up at 5:30 for a 6am training session. The gym has a very close-knit community feel. All the other clients in the semi-private training are very nice and everyone encourages you. It is also great to see Larry, the owner, there at all times. He will always throw in his own encouragement even if he isn't personally training. Anyone who is serious about getting fit should consider BAC. read more

I've been a BAC member for about the past 2.5 years. I. LOVE. THIS. GYM. And I can't believe I just said I love a gym! This gym is the first gym I've ever felt comfortable working out in. I've haven't enjoyed working out in a long time, like I do here. I like that a lot of members are women, so I always feel comfortable. I never feel judged if there is something I cannot do. It doesn't have a bro-y gym feel at all. Hands down the best thing about this gym is the incredibly talented training staff. We're talking like rock star level. I love: Any class with Azuka. He is one of the most talented trainers. He has a way of instructing that is educational but doesn't make you feel judged or inadequate. He is extraordinarily good at helping to motivate his clients. He gives individual attention and coaching without being overbearing. As a plus, he's also hilarious! Miranda's HIIT class - I am asthmatic, and I used to HATE doing cardio. But I genuinely look forward to Miranda's HIIT class! She is super sweet, but that doesn't mean her class won't kick your ass. She incorporates a lot of strength training into her HIIT class as well, which is excellent. Tyler's level 2 class - again, super talented dude. Tyler is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He is good at modifying exercises to fit everyone's level. He has great tips for how to improve your strength and rehab injuries. Also, Peggy is AWESOME! She is very patient and always pushes me to do the best I can. When I injured my ankle, she sent me exercises to help me rehab it and get back to the gym. BAC is an incredible gym. It has so much more than any gym I've belonged to before, and yet the rates are extremely reasonable. The new facilities are beautiful and always organized and very clean. The group fitness classes are a great workout and very fun. I feel like I am always trying things I have never done before. The instructors are all very well qualified and focused on proper form. I feel very safe doing the workouts. I have never felt in danger of injuring myself in any of the classes. I have also been meeting one-on-one with a trainer, Bravo, twice a week for about 5 weeks. Despite already exercising frequently and being in pretty good shape, I have really seen my fitness level improve rapidly since beginning these sessions. Bravo always has a workout planned that has been carefully constructed based on my results from the previous sessions. Bravo is fun to work with and he does a great job of motivating me without being intimidating. I have seen other one-on-one sessions going on and it seems like all of the trainers are fantastic. I was able to schedule a body-composition session, where Paul took measurements and used calipers to determine my body fat %. It's a great way to measure progress. Larry, the owner, is always around making sure things are running smoothly and gym-goers are happy. The rest of the staff are all very nice, professional, and helpful. The locker rooms are very clean and well-maintained. There are always plenty of toiletries available, down to razors, hair ties, and mouth wash. The infrared saunas are AMAZING. Using them twice a week has really helped me survive these last few horrible weeks of winter. After 30 minutes in the sauna, I feel warmed to the core, like I have been laying on the beach all day. There are large saunas in the locker rooms in the basement and smaller ones in the private locker rooms on the first floor. I haven't tried the endless pool yet, but they look really nice. BAC would be a great place to train for a triathlon. Overall, I love this place and I highly recommend membership! read more

This is one of the best gyms in the city hands down. I've been a member for nearly 2 years and the facilities still feel new and well maintained, and there's plenty of equipment, but that's not what makes it stand out. The name of the gym is fairly deceiving as most of the equipment that is open to regular members is not intended with individuals with athletic pursuits. 90% of the equipment is machines, which don't challenging the body properly if training for sports is your ultimate goal. There was very good equipment available to those who are willing to pay a rent payment on on a personal trainer. The one thing I did enjoy was the fact that is was fairly empty around 6-9 pm, probably as a result of membership price being 3 to 4 times higher than the crunch and NYSC facilities in the area. read more

Long story short - stop what you're doing and go sign up for a membership here. I can't say enough that joining here has been such a positive thing for me. I'm nearing the end of my first month and I can already feel and see a significant change in my body. That's not even the best part... for the first time at any gym, I actually feel motivated by the trainers to make progress, keep at it and challenge my body at the same time. In the past, I'd go all-in for about 3 weeks and then start showing up more and more infrequently if I got bored with my routine until I wasn't going at all anymore. BAC offers a variety of classes that are fun yet provide the right balance of challenge as well. With my new membership package, I was able to sample a variety of Group Training classes as well as Semi-Private training; a real treat in addition to the unlimited fitness classes that come with basic membership. After a couple of weeks of trying out these Group Training and Semi-Private Training classes with different instructors, I'm definitely making the upgrade in my membership plan. I lifted weights for the first time in my life 2 weeks ago..... legitimately something I never thought I'd do, ever. Historically, I've always been more interested in burrito weights over barbells but times change, I guess. This gal's squat game is about to get real strong. Paul is A+ and really takes the time to help you get your form right so you can execute the moves correctly. If strength training isn't your cup of tea, I can't say enough how much I love Megan's yoga class on Thursday evenings. Seriously Larry, if you're reading this, can she teach like 12 more?! She is fantastic! Another class I've really enjoyed is Philip's spin class on Monday nights. Yeah, yeah, Mondays, I know.... but his positivity and encouragement make it such an enjoyable experience. I always leave this class feeling like I really accomplished something. Try it out, I promise you'll love it. read more

This place is fancy gym heaven. Educated instructors, beautiful facility and one stop shopping. It's a really great place to work out. The owner has been in the fitness business a long time and he only hires and chooses the best of everything. On top of that they hold seminars for trainers with some of the top leaders in the industry. I love it there. read more

I LOVE this gym, Larry the owner is super friendly and the trainers are too. I see more 'serious' people there working out and come here for group training, which I hear is super effective (and it looks fun too). No douchey people, but really nice neighborhood folks. As a woman I find this gym a friendly place and never feel harassed, or heckled. The equipment is high-end, clean and in excellent condition. They have small but infrared saunas, and two endless swimming pools. if you like to take your fitness to the next level, this is the best place! read more

Incredible facility with a great staff. Trainers and teachers are knowledgeable and kind. The classes offered are extensive and impressive. I may just come in at off-hours but I'm surprised this place isn't always packed. Larry does a great job of running this place, and am happy to be a part of the community he's created here. read more
