I started working with Austin Stoner (@stones_throne.sc) after having long standing issues with my back. Physical therapy let me down because it was boring and expensive but Austin took a really smart approach to my recovery, while also working on general strength training, mobility, and wellness. After the 3rd session I already felt relief on my back and after 2 months I started waking up feeling like a new person, having zero pain or discomfort. It's been over 5 months working with him and can honestly say I've never felt better in my adult life. Would recommend Austin to anyone who feels physically stuck and is looking for a change in body and mind. He is an incredibly positive, uplifting guy, who takes a well researched approach to physical health and I'm very grateful for him and his work. read more

I joined Grindhouse a year ago and began training promptly with Nathan Gibbs, who I want to give a shoutout to here. Nathan's expertise in kinesthetics was integral in healing a chronic knee injury I had, and has since been instrumental in me building a noticeable amount of functional muscle over the past year. Nathan is extremely knowledgeable, dedicated to his client and training, and flexible to what your goals and needs are. On top of all that, he's a great vibe to train with. Grindhouse has a great layout, great staff, a wide variety of machines to use, and a positive atmosphere. In my opinion it is the best bang for your buck in the Williamsburg neighbourhood. As someone who usually doesn't like going to the gym, going to Grindhouse makes it enjoyable and training with Nathan has made it worthwhile. read more

The owner of this gym, David Naqam Washington asked one of his clients for money so this gym could bring in new kickboxing gloves. He promised the money would be returned in 30 days. All of this is in writing. Then 30 days turned to "a few more weeks." THIS IS ALL IN WRITING. Turns out there were no plans to bring in new gloves. Client then brought this to the attention of the Director of the gym, who chose to ignore the matter. Since then, this has been brought to court in 2023 and a stipulation was signed that the money would be paid back. Tl;dr - I like this gym, but I wish they would invest more in the facilities, especially given the recent price hike. There are other gyms with similar price points where you get more bang for your buck. But first, I'll start with what I LIKE about the gym: -There's plenty of equipment. I've never had an issue getting a piece of equipment even during the post-9-to-5 rush -The manager of the personal training program is very professional. When I've had questions he's been quick to respond and very polite. I also had a good experience working with Gabriel the personal trainer - he's patient, experienced, and just a decent, good guy -The cleaning staff is incredible. They're constantly cleaning and they work really hard to keep this place sanitary and clean That said, given the $109.99 price point (which is basically $110) + tax there are a few improvements I'd like to see at the gym: -There aren't enough lockers. I understand that this is a really hard problem to solve because building a new locker room isn't really feasible, but they do need to figure out some kind of solution because when I get to the gym and there's no locker to put all my stuff it's a real pain -I'm a details guy, so maybe this is too nit-picky for some, but the lockers SLAM really loud every time they close. Even if you tap it gently the lockers still slam really loud when they close and it's annoying. It's not the end of the world, it's not a big deal, but it would be really nice if they just installed some cheap rubber stoppers to fix that -The soap in the showers feels and smells kinda cheap. I get that this isn't a spa but for $109/month it would be nice if the shower products were just a little bit nicer - even just a scent that doesn't smell like drug-store shampoo would be better -The sauna is...bad. It's literally just a one-person wooden box that warms up a little and it always smells really bad. While the cleaning crew here is very good, it smells like the sauna in the men's locker room hasn't been cleaned in a long time. Super gross. I also wish they would invest in like a real sauna like some of the other local gyms have. Again, for the price, I'd just like them to invest more in the gym All in all, this gym isn't bad. If you just want a no-frills gym with plenty of equipment and regular cleaning this is a good choice. But for me personally where the value really starts to drop off is when I compare it to some of the other local gyms that are in the same price range. I.e.- Athletic Club - has multiple floors, tons of equipment and classes, and a solid locker room Vital - 24/7 access for members, cowering spaces, TWO gyms, climbing (obviously), classes with a beautiful view, lots of single-use restrooms Chalk - Big proper sauna, locker room with shoe cubbies and plenty of lockers These other gyms are in the same price range as Grind but you just get more value for your money (Vital being the exception, they are a bit more expensive, 31% more, but the fact that they're open 24/7 and have coworking spaces and have city skyline-view yoga classes, all of those perks have been a big draw for me) There are other gyms I'm planning on checking out too: F45, True North, Session, etc. Lastly, Grind House has a 30 day cancellation policy. On the one hand, this is good because you're not locked into a complicated contract - I appreciate that, but on the other hand it's just a way for them to squeeze an extra month out of you. So, if you cancel 30 days before your next renewal date you won't get charged for the next month but, think about it, 30 days from any date is always going to spill into the next month. So if it's January and you want to cancel your membership, no matter which day you submit the cancellation request, January 1st, 15th, 28th, you're still going to have to pay for February because the February charge date is on the first of the month and, again, 30 days from any date is naturally going to land you in the next month. Anyway, it's a solid gym but could use some improvement. Personally, I'm thinking about switching to Vital because I like the 24/7 access, the coworking spaces, the rooftop, the size (there are two massive facilities next to each other - two gyms) etc. It just feels like I'm getting more value there - even if it's more expensive. If you just want a clean, no-frills gym this is great but if you're picky about details or just want more value for your money then you may want to check out some other gyms in the area. Also, one more thing I want to add: the music. The music at this gym is SO. LOUD. I would regularly hear it through my noise-cancelling headphones. Please turn down the volume. read more

The Gym is pretty clean. However the prices have went up. I use to be a member when the location was managed under Retro Fitness and man the prices were great $20 a month. It changed ownership over the pandemic from Willy B to Grindhouse. the prices have gone up a lot and the gym hasnt really been upgraded any much more than what the retro fitness was. Dont get me wrong some new equipment has been added like a one person sauna and that cross fit type stuff but alot of machines dont work like bikes/treadmills. The staff is nice and like i said the place is clean. Ultimately its one of the more affordable gyms in the area that isnt overcrowded like blink so i think it warrants the price to an extent. However the price keeps going up and i dont see an end in sight. read more

Nice gym and lovely staff. This gym is extremely expensive. My membership fee has gone over $100 for the month of April. I had tried to cancel it today, so I'd only be charged for March and not $100 for April. They informed me that I cannot cancel it and they needed a 30 day notice. I had no idea about this, they do not advertise this. I had gotten multiple emails about this fee increase but, not once did they say they need a 30 day notice to cancel it. This is unfair and I am extremely disappointed. I am a college student and could barely afford the original fee, now I am being forced to pay over $100 that I do not want to pay. read more

Definitely one of the highlights from my stay in Brooklyn. I had a chance to check out the gym in the middle of the first winter storm of 2022 and let me tell you they get after it in rain or shine (or a foot of snow). Super friendly and helpful staff at the front let us check out the gym. Plenty of free weights, stationary machines, HIIT areas, and Olympic platforms for whatever your needs are. Such a scam, honestly, stay away. This is wild. Any 5 star reviews are definitely coordinated with the business. I've been a patron in the building for 7 years, was a "legacy" member under the same monthly price when it changed to "WillyB fitness". When the pandemic happened they send an email asking to keep membership fees rolling to help with the staff. I say yes even though getting laid off myself (assuming now- all that money went to the corrupt management). They change their name and arbitrarily start charging members over $70/month. Messages to their "customer service" go unanswered- I called the front desk and when I asked to speak with someone the woman solemnly claims "I'm sorry, no one is available"- like she's heard this all before. Now in contact with the consumer complaint department of nyc as well as fraud with my bank. Scroll down through the fake 5 star reviews to see the real people going through the same process. Finally got in touch with someone named Jasper who "as a courtesy" was able to cancel my membership? Honestly sad and infuriated that these people take advantage of members during a global pandemic. I've been a member here for about 6 months and it has gotten so overcrowded. There isn't even room to change in the locker room at this point and there are rarely enough weights for classes. Classes are also very crowded as well. They open several spots with class pass which is questionable given how many members want/do attend. This place is massive and has things I can't find at other gyms, like yokes, sleds, TRX, assault runners, etc. Even when it's busy, I have space and have plenty of equipment to choose from, so I'm not waiting on benches or racks. I WORST GYM EVER. was a member since they were retro fitness. Then they sold and became Willy B fitness. Still good. Then Covid happened. We froze our accounts for obvious reasons. Then they became Grindhouse. They sent an email which went to my spam folder and I never got it. Because I did t respond, these douchebags UNFROZE MY ACCOUNT T AND STARTED CHARGING ME AGAIN. Not what I was paying, but the new rate which was 5 times my monthly. When I finally caught it, I called them. This guy Brandon, one of the owners basically told me he could refund ONE month. They charged me 5 months. Not just me, but my wife as well. Complete asshole I ended up having to get my bank to dispute the charge. Stay away from these people. I originally joined this gym when it was retro fitness. The space was huge, but the equipment needed replacement, but for the price, it was worth it. Once the new owners took over and changed it to Grind House, the improvements have been amazing. The gym is spotless, the equipment is very well maintained and the staff is very friendly. As soon as they were able to reopen they have been keeping up with COVID protocols and upgrading the air filtration system to make sure is exceeds CDC requirements. This is the best gym in the area. My only "complaint" is that now that they are an updated, well run facility, word is getting out and more people are now in the gym. read more

They charge 100$ for a gym that has no internet and you can't make phone because there no reception. This don't wast your money on this gym. This gym is equipped with great equipment for what ever it is your are training for and with in the year that I have been there they have continued to upgrade and get newer better equipment . Great facility in a really great location! Very spacious and clean. The equipment is top notch and looks straight-outta-the-box brand new. There is more than enough room for ample social distancing and everyone honors that along with mask wearing. The on-site trainers are REEEALLY good and provide their expertise along with the option for personal training. They took 3 days to respond to my email about honoring my pricing after trying to charge me already. I asked about pricing and they emailed back saying "your membership has been cancelled" without conversation, without any substance. They do not care about their members, they do not care- they will charge you with no consent, pass on your info with no consent, and if you can't "afford" them or have questions about it they dismiss you with no cause or concern. read more
