I've been going to CrossFit Greenpoint 4-5 days a week for the past 2 months, and honestly cannot say enough positive things about this gym! The coaches are great (and have an uncanny knack for remembering EVERYBODY'S names)! They're knowledgable, encouraging, patient, and generally fun to work with. The other people in the classes are easy to get along with and sociable, if that's what you're looking for (but no pressure). They offer a range of classes (1hr CrossFit, power lifting, open floor to do your own thing, on wknds - bodyweight and cardio classes) at convenient morning and afternoon times to get your physical fix. At first I was hesitant about the whole "CrossFit thing", but after my first class all of that was alleviated. They encourage people to be get fit and healthy, whether that means jumping into the CrossFit culture, lifestyle, lingo, etc. or not, there's no pressure. So if you're looking for a new thing to be "your thing" it's all their, but if you're just looking for a gym with good people to get a great workout at and sweat out last night's happy-hour, this place has you covered! read more

It can transform your relationship with fitness. I have long preferred team sports over gym time or individual activities like running. By training like a team, with friends you see on a regular basis, CrossFit brings those feelings of shared accomplishment and mutual encouragement. The CFG coaching staff works to maintain this collegial atmosphere without being overly cultish. 2. You can do it! When first starting, there can be a little bit of a psychological hurdle because the workouts are tough - but it definitely, definitely gets easier over time. Everything can be scaled or modified, and for 99% of us, that's going to happen pretty regularly. 3. CFG is a fantastic value. The membership rates are very competitive (especially for NYC), but even more importantly the results speak for themselves! 4. Achieving measurable improvement is really, really fun. I'm not sure where to start. Twelve years ago I was an athlete. Or thought I was. I would hit the gym three hours a day and mindlessly waste away on the elliptical just so I could fit into small clothes. It wasn't actually a sustainable lifestyle at all once I entered the working world. I made a lot of mistakes without proper training... and overtrained to the point where I was always injured and fatigued. Three years ago, I was working a job that had made me sedentary and stressed. A life-long, chronic illness had robbed me of most of my mobility, stamina, passion, and all of my strength. I could not put on muscle and became out of breath just walking two blocks. I was overweight and about to head into major surgery. After my recovery from surgery, I spent a lot of time looking for the right way to get back into shape. I joined a local chain gym and had no success when I tried to repeat my previous elliptical marathons. During my illness I would stare out my window at the open garage across the street - which was then Crossfit Greenpoint! Though I was outwardly skeptical, I was completely intrigued. Like most people who have never tried Crossfit, I couldn't picture myself doing any of the workouts. I thought I already had to be "in shape" to join. So I continued my gym routine and began to add weight training in - but couldn't get confidence or guidance. In May of last year, I finally did it. Mostly prompted by a late night spending binge where I bought a bunch of new workout gear and a GroupOn for their foundations class. I thought I'd just do the class and bring those skills back to my budget gym. It became clear to me by the third class that I was never leaving CFG. I walked in and immediately realized that what had been missing from my training program was community. As a former soccer player, I probably should have realized that I do better with a coach, surrounded by teammates pushing me to go further. I'm not writing this review to tell you that my body has completely done a 180 in the past 10 months, but I can lift a box over my head. I still can't do a pull-up, but I can hang from the bar longer and stronger each time. A few weeks ago I hit triple digits in my front squat. What has done a 180 is my attitude towards fitness, nutrition, and community. It doesn't feel like a punishment, it feels like fun. I started my journey with CrossFit almost a year ago. I dread workout environments that are super "brotastic", can't stand being yelled at and do not like over the top cheery coaching/training styles. Mike was my first coach and basically taught me everything I know. He's got the patience of Job! He works with each one of us to make sure we're doing our movements right, scaling everything appropriately and at the same time still challenging ourselves to improve. Ron (our head coach) is the most calm and even-keeled person I've ever met. He puts together WODS that challenge you and engage your entire body! I have discovered all sorts of new muscles just from the soreness and the sick thing is I like it! You get results and that's what it's all about. Our other coaches Dave and Tim also really work with each one of us to make sure we're nailing our movements, applying the right technique and getting the most out of our workouts. Just make sure you put the rowers away correctly or Dave will give you a tutorial on proper rower storing. The dynamic between this team of fitness professionals is amazing. You can see they genuinely enjoy working with each other and have an actual friendship that spills over into a sense of community at CFG. I look forward to going to classes and spending time with everyone there. I'm almost tempted to not write this review, because I don't want more people to find out how great this place is. But that'd be selfish - especially since the owners/coaches are so incredibly nice & hard working. In short: I was TERRIFIED when I started a year ago (both because I was out of shape, and I also had visions of any & all Crossfits being homophobic, over-the-top, meatheady places). I was damn good on an elliptical, but I don't know that I had ever lifted a weight in my life. Needless to say, this all seemed daunting. Mike led the Foundations class, where he diligently taught us the basics (and even they were hard). The workouts never get easier, but I have absolutely seen that I've gotten stronger over the past year. And what I appreciate is that the coaches push you, but also ensure that you're safe. While none of this is in my "comfort zone" (I still often want to die immediately following a workout), I never feel uncomfortable, which honestly surprised me. And I haven't died yet. The coaches are awesome, everyone that belongs to CFGP is absurdly nice and welcoming, and what's better than sweating out your body weight in a warehouse? If I can (kind of) do it, so can you. read more

I never, ever thought that I would wind up in a CrossFit gym. And I don't think I ever would have stayed with it if I didn't wind up in Crossfit Greenpoint! I joined about a year ago as an absolute beginner. I was not a college athlete, and had biked, swam, and did yoga for over a decade living in NYC. Crossfit Greenpoint is absolutely wonderful even though I never leave Yelp reviews I'm doing it now because the gym is good people and I really appreciate how much I've learned there. The coaches are were all extremely welcoming to me as a new comer and never made me feel less-than in some way. They answer even basic questions with attention and care, and I always felt safe when I was trying new movements or pushing myself to find/test my limits. That said - there were many people in the gym who are clearly REALLY experienced. The coaches devote just as much attention to those folks and scale workouts to different levels on the go. I never felt like I was slowing anyone down, or that where I was at wasn't good enough in some way. Five stars all the way. read more

After crossfitting for 4 years at other gyms in New York, I moved to Brooklyn and switched to Crossfit Greenpoint. From my first class, I knew I had stumbled upon something special. The coaches are astute -- able to make small corrections for experienced athletes, as well as create an incredible foundation for novice crossfitters. After years of trying different kinds of exercise - aerobics, kickboxing, yoga, pilates, and my personal favorite, wandering aimlessly around Planet Fitness wondering why there is free pizza - I am happy to call CrossFit Greenpoint my home. If you told me 1+ years ago when I started, that I could climb a rope HS gym class style, pick up 200lbs, or would willingly subject myself to 50+ minutes of cardio and end with a smile on my face, I would think you were crazy. But with the support of the unparalleled coaching staff and great community of members, I quickly found confidence in trying new and seemingly unachievable things. This is an excellent gym and an excellent community of people. The trainers are very knowledgable, helpful and personable. I started coming to classes with an injury and none of the coaches ever forgot or failed to help me modify. I have since recovered almost fully. They have always met me where I'm at with my fitness level the help me get better and complete the workouts. The coaches just provide a lot of support, encouragement and expertise. The price is a bargain and they give a discount for couples, which my wife and I have taken advantage of. I can't say enough good things about this gym or the people there. Results! I started here a while back when going to the local bargain-gym started to become a dull routine - where i was seeing minimal results for the amount of time i was spending. Crossfit was intimidating at first but you realize that everyone is there to get better - not necessarily break records, but develop over time and at his/her own pace. The coaches and members there are great and the programming at CFG is designed so the movements and exercises are always mixed-up and never boring. So, CFG has helped me get stronger and healthier than I've ever been in less time spent per week. And when you look at it on a $$/Results basis, it's a much better bargain than even a $19.95 pass to the local NYSC. read more

I'm obsessed. And now that they've moved into a larger gym, I can write a review and encourage others to join. Several years ago, my boyfriend was in a major car-on-bicycle accident (doored in the stupid left hand bike lane on Eckford Street). He suffered fairly major injuries to one leg. Some years later, CrossFit Greenpoint opened on our block. I immediately began mocking the "bros" hanging out outside, and faking annoyance at their (fun) loud music and (intimidating) crashing weights. My boyfriend, on the other hand, joined. I was convinced that with his injuries, CrossFit would ruin his body forever. 4 months later, he had me convinced. In those months, he had made more progress than in YEARS of doing curls and crunches at the gym and running regularly. I have now been a member of CrossFit Greenpoint for almost a year, and I only wish I had started sooner. CrossFit has made me stronger and faster, but it has also helped me get over lingering body and food issues and made me more confident and fun to be around. The "bros" that I mocked a year ago are my friends, and I (not so) secretly love their music. CrossFit Greenpoint is above all a SAFE place to train. The coaches will keep you safe physically, and the members and community will keep you safe from any kind of anxiety that you might feel about working out in a group setting. I've dropped in on a number of other gyms across the country while traveling, and while a few (San Francisco CrossFit! CrossFit Recursive!) have been excellent, there is just no place like home. read more

Best box ever. All of the coaches are top notch. Sadly, I recently moved out of state and have been going to a local box. The difference is night and day. Experiencing my new box makes me appreciate the detail with which the coaches at Crossfit Greenpoint describe each movement. I also love that review of each movement is done as a group regardless of experience. They're dedication the accurate body movement to promote and maintain health, strength, and flexibility is aces. The thing I miss most, however, is the warm and welcoming nature of the box. The coaches are genuinely great people. Four months postpartum and I can say without a doubt that my recovery and my body's ability to bounce back is solely due to Crossfit Greenpoint. I've lost some strength, but not much! And the coaches continue to be supportive and extremely helpful. Richie, one of the coaches, even wrote out a few workouts for me to be able to do at home when I'm unable to get to the gym. Additionally, and maybe most importantly, the support from the coaches and the other members of CFGP since getting back has been really amazing. TL/DR: This is, hands down the best Crossfit gym in the city and if you don't come check it out and join you're an idiot! JK but not really. Ok now for the long story - After deciding to move to Brooklyn from Long Island, leaving my CF gym of 4 years at home, starting in a new place was both exciting and scary. When I walked through the garage door, I was immediately greeted by one of the coaches and members. I jumped in on a workout and knew the coach was amazing, and the workout was challenging. I knew within the first 5 minutes that this is where I wanted to be. Crossfit Greenpoint's atmosphere is always electric, positive, sarcastic, friendly, motivating, and fun. There are a ton of serious heavy hitters in this gym and they are some of the nicest, most down to earth people you'll ever meet. Everyone lends a helping hand and kind remark. A few months after I moved to Brooklyn, life had the chance to catch up with me and for the first time I wasn't able to workout how I was used to. I was on heavy duty meds, seeing doctors and teams of doctors for months on end with no hope in sight. My coach saw my despair and told me in no uncertain terms that if I didn't get my ass back to the gym I would never beat this challenge. I had never been so depressed or felt like my life as I knew it was over before. I managed to get to the gym 1 or 2 times a week, would try to workout and would end up crying on the walk home. Coach kept on me, asking me when I was going to come in, sent memes to make me laugh and kept my spirit up. After about 10 months of this, I finally started a treatment that I was responding positively to. I was able to workout again somewhat normally but was still dealing with a medical condition that kept me weak. Coach never gave up on me and constantly told me to just come in and stretch, or do movements that I could do, if I couldn't do a class. I've never gone through an illness in my life, but having someone that genuinely cared about me and both my physical and mental well being is something I am eternally grateful for. Thank you, Coach Mike for being a stellar human being, great friend and brother figure. Thank you to all of the coaches for all of their help and support, I'm not sure what would have happened if I didn't have the gym. After getting my strength back and not related to illness, I tore my ACL about a month ago and had to have reconstructive surgery. Surgery was successful. Thanks to CF Greenpoint, my surgeon said that my hamstring muscle was "robust and meaty" and because of that muscle being in the shape it was in, I didn't need an allograft to reconstruct my ACL. Thank you to CFG for making my hamstring muscles strong, my mind strong and my spirit indomitable. I owe you everything! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart to all of the coaches at CFG for helping me reclaim my fight. Side note: the gyms new slogan should be making hamstrings robust and meaty. I dropped into Crossfit Greenpoint during open gym three times while I was on vacation to try and work off some of the calories from all the great food I was eating in NYC. This is a great gym! As a guy whole prefers to do my own thing, the coaches were extremely accommodating and let me do whatever I wanted during their open gym hours. Unlike many other gyms they have a significant amount of open gym time blocked out on the schedule making life easy if you're a guy from out of town looking for a place to do your own program while on vacation or an avid gym goer looking for a place to get a good workout in midday when many other gyms are closed. While I didn't have an opportunity to take a class, the coaches were extremely friendly and seemed vigilant of proper form even amongst the people that had dropped in for open gym ensuring the safety of their members. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and friendly and the foundation for a very fun and welcoming gym. There is always a great energy in the gym. All of the members are welcoming and encouraging. CFG is the best! Great atmosphere and the best coaches. I've tried different boxes before either through a groupon or a friend and did not get "hooked". I didn't see a change and didn't feel motivated to keep coming back. A friend of mine is also a member and raved about the coaches. She got me in the door but the coaches have gotten it to stick. Somehow they've gotten me to push myself out of my comfort zone at the right pace. I haven't seen results like this in years both mentally and physically. By far the best gym I've ever gone to. This Crossfit has the best programming out of any other I've been to. The coaches positive and motivational energy makes the hour workout fly by. The coaches and gym members have such a friendly bond that if feels like you're hanging out with your friends and not actually at the gym. Most Crossfit's have a reputation for trying to get members to lift as much heavy weight as possible. This is NOT the goal of this Crossfit. At this gym they make sure your form is perfect so that you don't get injured. They work with you and take the time time to get to know the members and what they can and can't do. The scheduled classes have a warm up, review (usually about what will be in the workout to follow), and the workout. Prior to the workout the coach speaks with members individually on scaling options. I love this gym and highly recommend. read more

Personally I came from from a background of zero athletic experience. My wife and I joined Crossfit Greenpoint in February of 2015 after spending few months running on a treadmill at our local YMCA. While we made some progress it was boring and we were losing our motivation. Making that switch was not easy, and was of course incredibly intimidating, but it was best decision I have ever made. The community of friends and support we found at CFG is second to none. My wife and I are still figuring out this crazy world of fitness but we have seen significant progress and we really owe it to the guys at CFG.
