Scam alert! I wish I read these reviews prior to signing up for the 6 week challenge. I was motivated and hopeful, especially due to prior positive crossfit experiences at other gyms and learned a big lesson about reading reviews first. To be clear: The 6 week challenge which is falsely advertised as free costs $632. If you lose 25 pounds they say you get your money back. Doing the math, this type of program endorses disordered exercise and eating. It's not healthy to lose that amount of weight in 6 weeks They exploit those that have unrealistic goals, financially. Personally, I am writing because I was supposed to start the 6 week challenge right before COVID and they continued to bill be throughout the gym closures. I explained that I would be willing to transfer the money I already paid into a regular membership following COVID and they refused. I called my credit card company since it is illegal to charge for a gym that is closed due to COVID. The credit card company advised to file a claim. They responded by calling collections. I am confident that the credit card company will handle this for me, but am sickened by these practices overall. Mostly, I am genuinely worried about the mental health of potential consumers in the future. The actual classes are extremely variable since the staff are not well trained. The staff themselves told me that they are not treated properly and that there are is little, inconsistent communication with management. It shows in the classes, and the workouts are not as effective as other crossfit programs I have done as a result. read more

I have very mixed feelings about the gym. Primarily because if it wasn't for the AMAZING staff, this gym would get 1-2 stars based on the 6-week challenge that is used as a hook and bait. I seriously cannot say enough good things about their trainers. They are attentive, patient, and take the time to slow things down for you, if you're new, while the rest of the class may be more experienced and blowing through the workout. Laughs, hard work, true family atmosphere, and great facilities. The trainers are not at fault here. Where I have to be true to the readers here is the way in which they do business. The 6-week challenge will ask you to lose 25 lbs or 5% body fat in 6 weeks, whilst you pay $600 ($100/week). When I unfortunately came just shy of the challenge, I simply could not stomach paying $600 for essentially one month of service, so I took the "monthly discount" over one year. I got a cookie cutter meal plan, not specific to you or your body type, and a line to a coach who is pretty responsive, but nothing to pay extra for. What they don't tell you, upfront at least, is that you are locked in for a full year if you decide not to take the $600 L. But by then youre already neck deep and want your return on investment, so there's the hook and bait. You cannot cancel, even if you move out of the gym's location range. I moved 45 minutes from the nearest location, explained that it was too inconvenient to travel 1.5 hours round trip to the gym, yet still denied any compromise. I totally understand there is staff that have to earn a living, and business to be maintained, but you have to ask "is this ethically fair to a person?". Now after one year, and with hindsight being 20/20, it was a bad decision. Why is it $600, when your regular membership is ~$250/month? I felt so taken advantage, but really forced myself every trip to be optimistic about my membership with WillyB. Because of such an amazing staff and great family atmosphere I really hope they improve in the regard of amending, or doing away with completely, this 6 week challenge, as well as more professional customer service. I received a pop up ad on my instagram feed that offered FREE enrollment into a 6-week challenge a the WillyB Gym for the first 20 people who responded to the ad. I clicked the link and was taken to the registration page asking for my name, phone number, email address and a brief comment. The pop up registration page (accessed via my phone) created a sense of urgency by saying "only 6 spots left!" The ad even contained text that explained why they where offering this for free! It said something about wanting customers to give reviews on how the program works. It promised customized workouts and a personal nutritionist! I rushed to complete the registration information and after entering it - I was taken to an appointment page with interview time slots for the very same day (Wednesday, 5/22/19). I booked an "interview" for 7:00 PM. I received a confirmation text for my interview from Mason and a calendar invitation via email. I traveled 45 minutes to get to the Gym on Grand Street. Once I arrived I met with Mason Sullivan, Director of staffing and Personnel (per his business card), who began the discussion by asking me why I was there -- which was strange. He went on to explain the required 8 classes (Foundation & HIT) before starting the regular Crossfit workouts. He told me that the 6-week challenge required that I commit to either losing 25lbs, a certain percentage of body fat, or gain a certain amount of muscle mass. He said I would be required to pay a deposit of $600 to participate in the 6-week challenge and would get the money back if I succeeded in the challenge or I could apply the $600 as credit towards a future gym membership with Crossfit. Not only is it very difficult to lose 25 lbs (particularly while doing Crossfit) in just 6 weeks but this is NOT what was presented in the ad that I was responding to. Clearly this is a really underhanded marketing ploy. When I pointed out that this was not what was advertised, Mason rolled his eyes and said that I was the millionth person to point this out and he agreed that the ad was misleading. He said that the decision to run those ads was above his head. Although I was there based on an ad that stated that I was one of twenty lucky recipients of a FREE 6-week challenge, I was being asked to pay $600 upfront (or $100 per week over 6-weeks). I declined and left after telling him that this was false advertising and a waste of my time. If not illegal, it certainly is poor business practice to mislead consumers into thinking that they are going to receive services for free in exchange for committed participation only to tell them it actually will cost $600 (after they give you their contact information for your database and walk through your door). This bait and switch probably works for some - unfortunately... which is what they're counting on! I reported this to the BBB with hopes that they are made to stop doing this. Classes were amazing! Love the staff, I'm sure you will too. I went to Cross HIIT classes and lost 10lbs. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results, my trainers, and classmates. My rating is regarding some terms and conditions that weren't disclosed to me until this morning. I needed to cancel my membership (I wanted a hold but never confirmed that) since my hold was not done and was charged for 2 months of non attendance. But I didn't complain about the May charge since I didn't contact them. So I paid the $171.38 and didn't dispute it. Now I'm charged again and I'm livid. I don't get it. Apparently there's a 3 month commitment for memberships that I was never made aware of. I've gone on the website to look at there terms and conditions and I don't see it written anywhere. I usually only like weight lifting, and was initially a little bit reluctant to try something new....but damn. This was one of the best decisions i've made lately. WillyB Crossfit was everything I was looking for in a crossfit class. The instructors all brought their own personal styles and knowledge to all of the classes which helped to shake things up and stop anyone from getting bored. Being completely new to the world of crossfit I also had some issues with being intimidated to all the new stuff I was going to have to learn, but everyone (instructors as well as other people in my classes) was very approachable and was quick to assist with any questions or concerns I had. Lastly, and most importantly, I am a person with a disability. One of my main concerns was not being integrated into the classes with other able bodied people. This ended up never being an issue because everyone at WillyB took the time to work with me personally to adapt our daily WOD's and warm-ups to something that was realistic but still challenging for my body. Had a great experience at 1st. But with a newborn on the way and daycare costs potentially running into the thousands, I regretfully had to cancel my membership. Reached out to Jared in September regarding cancelation and was informed I would be on the hook another month as I was too close the renewal date. So I paid another month and they put my account on hold for December 1. December 6, I requested my membership be canceled as I did not want to pay for January. On January 1st, I began to receive texts, threatening to send my account to collections if I didn't pay another month. (HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM WILLYB!!!) I informed them of my request to cancel in early December. Their response...? Put your membership on hold for another 3 months. As I had already done this before, I informed them I would not do it again and would report them to the BBB. Yesterday I received a letter from a collection agency on behalf of WillyB. They letter was sent January 7. (Thought you had to be 30 days delinquent to be brought to collections??) They have still not responded to my BBB complaint. WillyB loves to make you feel like you're part of a tight knit community, even a family. But when you try to leave, they treat you just as, if not worst than the cable companies and cell phone providers. read more

The absolute best way to get into shape! I signed up for this gym because of the 6 week challenge they were offering. I'd never been more motivated to work out in my life. I was nervous for what I thought would be an intense workout but the trainers do an amazing job easing you into it. I used to dread going to the gym. Now I can't wait for it. I am currently stuck in trying to get out of the membership from that 6 Week challenge. Who is losing the 25 lbs or 5% body weight in 6 weeks? Not many. So they hook you with their deal and you end up paying at least triple paying them $600 for the year that they keep you. Mind you at this point, it's been over a year, but because of Covid, Idk how much longer they think I HAVE. I started up in July of 2019. At this point, I should be done.... Scott free considering we went into Quarantine in March of 2020, they stopped charging me in about April of 2020, and charged me a few times between that I had to contact billing about for a refund. Then they tried to act like the Facebook group and online videos was comparable. It wasn't. I didn't even try. And they started billing me again in June or July. Soooo it's almost Oct. When EXACTLY will my year be over to get out of this and go to a gym that works for me. Or even a series of different classes. ALSO they don't even have HIIT classes insight at Grand St every day like they used to.... It's CrossFit now and HIIT only on the weekends.... Garbage. The staff prior to the pandemic was nice though, folks are still nice now. But why am I paying this amount of money not to be able to go? I did the foundations course and one month unlimited CrossFit here. I really liked all the instructors and how inspiring everybody is here. The coaches remember your name and although it's a group class you still feel like you're getting a personal training session. Besides an indoor space, there is also an outdoor space to warm up when the weather allows. It was an absolutely wonderful introduction to CrossFit for me. I've been training here for a year and will continue as long as I'm in the neighborhood. I live in proximity to all 3 of their gyms so having the option to go to any location is cool and prevents monotony. The coaches have a great attitude and push you to your potential no matter what your fitness level or prior injury. Always good music and good energy. Some people think it's crazy that I pay for CrossFit... I think they're crazy for going to a cheap gym to scroll their Instagram between sets, avoid awkward eye contact, and not see any results. Also, while I'm here... this antiquated idea that "CrossFit is a cult" is just a lazy thing people said 10 years ago. Those same stubborn people are now fat with chronic injuries. It's normal to be afraid of what you don't know, but foolish to avoid trying something that's proven effective. read more

The Free 6-Week Challenge appeared in my news feed on Facebook & Instagram periodically for over 2 months. I thought, "This was too good to be true." They are truly wanting to help people achieve weight loss for free! I decided that I would register, and attended the introductory meeting where I was briefed on the Free 6-Week Weight Loss Challenge of WillyB CrossFit and told that no workout experience is needed, although I had it and that workout a minimum of 3 days a week and monitor your food intake. I had to ask, "Do you have more than half of the members lose 25lbs or 6% BMI?" The response was not that many, but we have some. At the end of the briefing I was told that I would have to pay $600 (installments of $100 weekly, $200 bi-weekly or paid in full) which would be refunded in total if I achieved the challenge, and if not the money would be applied as credit for future classes. At the end of the challenge and upon the final weigh-in I was told that only a portion of the deposit would be used toward the credit and they keep the balance. This is completely different from what was told to me during intake. Clearly, their goal is to get you in there, up-sell you and then scam you. What is being sold is a hoax. It is unfortunate because they have some really great trainers, most who are patient, encourage modifying the workout routines to meet your experience and comfort and then there are others who were not so patient. I would not recommend anyone to take this FREE 6-Week Challenge because it is a scam. The lack of integrity is evident. read more

Facility is clean, coaches are nice! But thats about it. I took the 6 week challenge and I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL! IT IS NOT A FREE CHALLENGE AS IT IS PROMOTED. IT COSTS $600. I found the challenge through a FB search, filled out the form and they quickly contacted me to set up an "interview." They set up the interviews when the members are in the middle of full blown work outs. I spoke with Cavan, I believe. He does a great job making you feel motivated. He talks about nutrition and how you will get a personalized meal plan, tailored just for you. (Not so personalized though because all the other people I spoke with after beginning the challenge had the exact same plan) He tells you that you need to attend at least 3 classes a week. He makes you believe if you follow the meal plan and attend the 3 classes, your life is going to change. All the while, your watching these people in action working out. How could you not feel motivated? Extremely smart business people!!! Thats when they drop the bomb. Exact words "we only ask for a small deposit of $600." SIX HUNDRED! If you can lose 25 lbs OR 6% body fat, you can get your "deposit" back. Now they have you thinking this is possible. I was still a little scared because I told him $600 isn't pocket change to me. I have children I need to think of. I told him I was going to speak to my sister, so she could do it with me. He told me not to let my chance slip by, that there was only 1 spot for me left. He said another challenge wasnt going to start for weeks. LIES, LIES, LIES. If you are thinking about doing this challenge, do not let these people trick you into thinking that you need to decide right then and there. People started the challenge EVERY SINGLE WEEK. The entire 6 weeks I was there, PEOPLE WERE CONSTANTLY STARTING THEIR CHALLENGE. I ended up signing the contract because I knew I could commit to 3 classes and follow the meal plan. What they fail to tell you is, while you will see some changes, you will not see the changes needed in order to succeed at this challenge. You need to attend at least 6 classes a week. I could not commit to that so I had to go a different route in order to be successful. I put myself on a 200 calorie a day diet, along with attending 3 classes AND working on the treadmill for 1 hr a day, burning between 800 and 1000 calories. I started that at week 3 and then the weight started flying off. I told Cavan about this at my 3 wk check in. He told me to do some "SELF REFLECTION" and think long term. How am I suppose to think long term? All I could think about was how I paid someone $600 to basically starve myself. Maybe WillyB needs to do some "self reflection" and reconsider how they are getting people to commit to this 6 week challenge. My 1 star review isnt about the coaches. If you are in desperate need to change your health, and you have an extra $600 to give away, maybe a challenge like this is for you. If you make it close to the goal, they offer to use your deposit towards a membership. If you are really tight on money, this challenge is not for you. DO NOT DO IT SO YOU DO NOT PUT YOUR BODY THRU WHAT I HAD TO DO. I wish I had seen a review like mine before I even went on my interview. But I didnt see any. After signing the contract, I noticed part of the contract stated before you receive your refund, you need to write a review. Well there you go! The positive reviews are coming from people who were basically forced to write them in order to get their money back. So here's my review, nothing against the coaches, they are nice, but the challenge sucks! Dont do it. This place will do every dirty little scam to keep you in. I spoke with a lawyer and their contracts are barely legal and super ambiguous, they're basically holding me hostage for a 6 week challenge after I tried to cancel. They said if I cancelled they still were going to charge me the 600 dollars so now I basically have to take mediocre classes for the next 6 weeks or give them money for no reason. I'm a college grad trying to figure my life out. Im basically working 6 days a week so I can afford to pay for this membership that I can't use because I need to work so much to pay rent. I tried going to the berry street location and noticed there was nothing to wipe down the benches and machines. People would sweat all over a bench so members would just avoid that bench. I saw two people complain, one of which asked for a spray bottle. The person at the front desk said "We don't have any in stock." No hand sanitizer, no disinfectant wipes, no spray bottles, nothing. WillyB CrossFit is simply amazing. The instructors were passionate and loved to teach and coach classes. During classes, instructors were always helping me to improve my form and movements. I never felt like I was doing anything wrong and they were quick to jump on any questions I had. The results have been fantastic too! I followed a nutrition diet to help me bulk up 15 lbs and it's worked! I have increased my weight but in a healthy way and I feel better than ever! The classes were so much fun too. Each workout is a challenge and I always left tired, worn out, and satisfied. I also had an energy boost after workouts and days were easier to get through. Places like WillyB and their two other locations is something that we all need more of. Their coaches, staff, and fellow athletes are some of the most accommodating, ego free humans on the planet. I personally have lost close to 40lbs since joining and have met some wonderful and intelligent people along the way. CrossFit gyms (or boxes, whatever you prefer) usually get a bad name because they are full of double bags, athletes concentrating more on apparel rather than getting better, and idiots covered in chalk trying to coach and almost always, showing you the wrong technique. Not this place, believe me. Please give this place a chance and I can almost assure you that you will come out a winner in the end. Just make sure to be consistent and try your best. read more

There's not many great gym/fitness options in the East Williamsburg area so WillyB is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! The box is very open and spacious and is attached to an outdoor area, complete with turf for sled pushes. In addition, the coaches are all incredibly knowledgable and help make the sport accessible for newbies. I highly recommend the foundations class series at WillyB if you want to try out crossfit for the first time. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Let me first say how misleading they are, signing up for a free program that isn't "free" a 6 week challenge if you will. While I had always been scared to do CrossFit because I suffer from degenerative disc disorder I decided to give it a shot and face my fear. I was 10000% transparent when first signing on about my back issues and still signed up despite being told that it was actually not free and cost $250 a week or whatever it was. They tell you they will give you your money back after the 6 weeks and that it's only to hold you accountable. Well after 2 classes I started experiencing a flare up and was having muscle spasms. At first they were "nice" enough to pause my membership but as days went on I knew this flare up wasn't going away any time soon. To put it in perspective, it varies for me. Flare ups can sometimes last days or even go on for months. When I started realizing my severe pain wasn't getting any better (I was laying on the floor most of the time Bc I couldn't even sit in a chair) I reached out to the owner/one of the owners? We chatted back and forth after me explaining I wouldn't be able to go back anytime soon and didn't feel it was right to pay for the remaining program if I couldn't use it. He was an a-hole and kept circling back on the fact that I signed a contract. While I get that, this is a pretty unique situation and while this money was to "only hold me accountable" and they were intending to give it back to me anyway, I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I was physically not able to attend these classes but I still had to pay for them. I asked if he needed a doctors note, I would send it to him, whatever he needed and he still refused saying they would just continue to pause my membership program. Despite telling me this and me still being hopeful I would recover soon, I still had people from their "billing dept" reaching out to me for payment. Guess there's no internal communication. I still kept in touch with the owner letting him know as weeks went on I wasn't getting better and then as if things couldn't get more complicated my husband got a job offer out of state in California. After letting him know that the pause wasn't going to suffice Bc 1) I was still immobilized basically but 2) I was most likely moving. He eventually stopped responding to me and sent me to collections. What a piece of human garbage. I have worked in customer service and sales in my entire life and would have NEVER done that to someone who was injured so severely they couldn't even sit. They were planning on giving the money back anyway so why was this such a big deal? I wasn't utilizing their services- I couldn't!! But somehow it's because they have a 3rd party that does their billing. Please, get over yourself. It pains me to even leave a shitty review during these crazy times, there are so many other problems in the world right now and we all need a little more compassion, including these crooks. I attended HALF OF ONE CLASS and realized it was not for me. The class was advanced and for people who were accustomed to crossfit. The instructors were not helpful at all. After I notified the staff that I would not be returning they continued to attempt to charge my card (which my bank stopped). Before Willy B I was unmotivated to even think about working out. I was coming off of a two year long injury and needed to really get back in shape. Through a divine process, I stumbled upon this box. At first, and for someone being a life long athlete, I was intimidated. But, I took it easy and the team here really guided me through the process, and are very hands on. I've been coming here (and L train) for almost a year now and I have nothing but good things to say. This is a small gym with supportive coaches who not only learn your name but pay attention to your fitness level, to help you improve class after class by giving you feedback on whether or not you should challenge yourself with more weight. That being said, lower intensity modifications are always demonstrated and encouraged to help you build up your strength for movements you still can't quite do. I usually go to a class with Cavan and a class with Stephanie R. every week and mix it up with the third class. Even if you find one or two coaches you really like, try everyone's class. Each coach brings something unique to their classes. If you want to get in better shape and challenge yourself, this is a great place to do it. read more

Not sure why there is no Yelp site for WillyB Fitness (the old RetroFitness). Maybe WillyB did a name change to shake all the terrible reviews by changing the name to WillyB Fitness (as opposed to CrossFit). In any event, this place is a sleaze machine. Their 3rd party biller, ABC Financial, has a broken website that you can't use "forgot username" or "forgot password" features to get into your account and cancel your membership. WillyB also changed cancellation to 60 days from 30, when the contract stated 30 and even ABC says 30 days. I had a very bad experience with Willy B crossfit and specifically with the owner Jared. I signed up and within 12 hours got a job in LA that required me to essentially move there for a few months not knowing if it would turn into a permanent move or not. They wouldnt let me cancel and when I said how other gyms typically let you cancel with a life changing event like moving across the country he wrote me this, "1) YOU clicked an advertisement 2) YOU scheduled an appointment 3) YOU decided you needed help with your health and wellness 4) YOU read, initialed, signed, and agreed to the terms of the challenge and deposit. I suggest you take a second, recognize the commitment you made and take some responsibility for your current situation. We have built our business on helping people, unfortunately there are some folks who chose not to honor their agreement and we find that sad." Now I am out 150 for no reason. This business is not operating in good faith. They advertised a free six week fitness challenge. I decided to participate. When I got to the business they explained that the cost of the challenge was 600 dollars. If you lose 25 pounds over the course of the six weeks or a a certain percentage of body fat they refund your money. I decided to try it . I paid 200 dollars upfront with the intention of paying the rest as I went over the 6 weeks. I attended one class and my work schedule changed, which would no longer allow me to attend the classes. I explained this to them and asked them for a refund, which they explained they couldn't do. Which was fine to me, I was willing to part with the 200. Approximately, 2 weeks after discontinuing this program, they processed another $200 payment, for services that would never be rendered.I corresponded with them and told them I again I wouldn't be able to take the challenge anymore and that I'm not paying for a service I'm not using. They proceeded to get very nasty and tell me to pick a different date to start the challenge. I told them it won't work due to my new work schedule.A representative of this "business" sent a series of inappropriate and unprofessional comments, that could be regarded as a form of harassment. They told me they could no longer help me being that I'm too lazy and unmotivated to complete the challenge and if they didn't get the rest of their money they would take me to collections. This is the worst experience I have had with a Crossfit affiliate. I have used other CrossFit gyms and never had an experience like this. I think it's fraudulent for them to expect me to pay for classes I can't attend. On top of that their class structure and booking app are very confusing the classes fill up fast and u are put on standby when they do with no guaranteed spot. Also after this nasty exchange with them. Their "coach" continued to text me and ask me about my progress etc. these text messages were generic with no concern for me even being in the program since I only attended one class. Signed up for intro class. Instructor never showed, l stood out in the cold with 4 others. When I emailed the owner, after 15 minutes of waiting out on the street, response was "he's on his way." In other words, keep waiting. Not even an apology?! Are you kidding me? You've just lost 4 clients. And everyone's good will. read more

It's an awesome experience! I highly recommend the 6 week challenge, first of all it's a really good deal, almost like a super intense trial. Second it motivates you immensely because of the stakes, which is such a big part of getting into shape, the motivation. Third, it's an awesome community and a safe space where people encourage each other, it'll make you want to stay on even after the challenge. Fourth, the trainers are really friendly and help out individually if needed, but also give you the freedom to decide what's best for your body. I exceeded my own expectations, and I'm so grateful for this fulfilling experience! read more

The space is just awesome. Having the chance to exercise outside is a rarity in New York City and this place gives you just that. Where else do you get a chance to push weighted sleds around on turf? The indoor facilities are more than adequate as well which is obviously crucial for when things aren't as pleasant outside. I did the 6 weeks challenge. It was a good program for weight loss. Glad they came out with option of buying the food because it's a lil much to cook everyday . If you stick to the program you will win. I end up loosing 25+ lbs . Not to mention the trainers are great read more
