They smiled as they greeted us and got me set up with a guest pass quickly. Space is awesome. I love the vibe in there, it's clean, not too busy when we went (which was wild for a Friday afternoon), and the locker rooms are nice. Would definitely recommend joining. read more

Trans women are women at TMPL. Full stop. Nobody in the locker room is melting down about it. Me and my fellow queens change, shower, sauna etc and get on with our workouts without a single issue. No drama. No chaos. Just grown adults acting like grown adults. All the fear-mongering about "biological males" in women's spaces? Not our lived reality at TMPL. You belong at TMPL. You're welcome here, and there are plenty of us in these spaces every day. Management told me that if anyone gives me the stink eye or acts unsupportive, I should go straight to them and it will be handled. That kind of backing matters. This place has such potential. Usually I go to the 49th street location, decided to try this one out. Let me say first that the gym is clean and it has excellent equipment. Top notch, in good repair, I love the wide benches and the assisted liftoff. Kettlebells, cables, Hex bar, Rogue cages... whoever ordered the equipment knew what they were doing. The problem is, it's hard to use things. The layout is very cluttered and cramped. Equipment is practically stacked on top of each other, benches nearly overlapping, functional equipment area littered with boxes and sleds (I love sleds but 15 feet isn't big enough for one) and other things, lifting platforms in the middle of the floor rather than in the corners. Made it very difficult to get to equipment, scope out what was being used, or even step back between sets. Constantly felt like I was in the way. Mid-set, someone was reracking weights inches from my head. Also, the lighting is excessively bright, especially the spotlights pointed directly down at the benches, so you're blinded if you try to use them. I feel like there may have been a remodel recently and they just haven't figured out where things go yet, so if my review is more than a few months old, maybe disregard it. My recommendation to the gym would be to junk the cardio equipment on 2, spread some of the weights or functional stuff down there. Turn down the lights. And trash the 35 pound plates. Nobody uses 35s and they make it hard to get to the 45s. Y'all are close to being a really great gym. Hope you can figure it out! read more

Cancelling this gym membership was a nightmare. I was lied to by Edwin, at Temple's Avenue A location, that my membership would be cancelled. They continued to charge my credit card and kept transferring my calls to a call center in India. The customer service was abysmal. I was forced to dispute the charges with my credit card company and report the businesses to the New York AG's office. Their business practices are predatory and abusive, sign up for a membership at your own risk. read more

Just joined a month ago and I'm liking TMPL a lot -- this is only for the Avenue A location. I went in to try it out for a day for free, found the staff (Mary helped me) super pleasant and nice to talk to and the facilities are quiet and clean. Paying month to month is a nice option. It's not Equinox but it's also about a third of the price. I've only done cycling classes and aside from an instructor being a no show once (which really sucks, hence the docked star) I'm finding the classes fun and challenging. Equipment elsewhere in the gym is new and functioning, not sure what else you need. Lifting floor is a little bro-ish but not nearly as insane as Blink. Hope this place doesn't become as packed as most Equinox locations downtown. read more

Beware! They kept charging my card for months after I'd cancelled, and even after admitting to the mistake would still not refund me. When I first noticed the charges I contacted them about it and they admitted to the mistake, saying a note had been put on my account to cancel it. They said they would work on getting me a refund. Then, nothing but silence and no full refund. So I contacted them again (one Jonathan Hawkins) and he blew me off, asking for documentation when they already knew it was a mistake. So I presented him with a recording I'd done of the previous call where they admitted to the mistake and he just ghosted me. I'm now having to dispute the charges with my credit card company. read more

I joined tmpl in feb 2021 and while I had to cancel my membership because I moved away, I was really happy with my choice. clean, fairly-priced, well-laid out neighborhood gym, with lots of different workout areas on the separate floors and great manager and staff who are polite and not intrusive/TOO friendly like some other places are... you know what I mean! I never felt like the vibe on any of the floors was too fratty either. They are brand new and have been doing a lot of work to make this place perfect, I didn't check out the other TMPL locations but would definitely recommend this one! read more

This place is NICE! It's brand new and has state of the art equipment. There's two spin studios, there's a very large fitness studio, they're building out a boxing studio and they have fitness classes, some Les Mills and some other ones. I took a HIT class with JoJo which was good and they're limiting the number of people in the gym classes - mask aren't required. It's about four stories and the layout is typical with upper body on one side lower body on the other side, floor for studio classes, a floor for cardio, and the lockers rooms (sorry no steam rooms or saunas here). There's four showers (they provide you with towels) and you'll need to bring your own lock for the lockers. The best part for me is that the weight floor has four free weight squat racks, two smith machines and two leg press!!! There's a working new elevator if you don't feel like hiking up the stairs, and there is easily accessible cleaning supplies throughout. I went on a Saturday morning and it wasn't crowded yet,b ut it's also a pandemic and it's a brand new gym so I don't know what it'll be like in a couple of months - sign up now and get the low entry rate. I joined this location right when they switched over from NYSC. I only joined out of convenience bc I worked right around the corner and the CrossFit gym I was going to closed. This was about a year ago. Since then they have revamped the whole place. All new equipment, new weights, machines, added racks, lifting platforms, rows, echo bikes and ski ergs which are three pieces of equipment most traditional gyms do not offer. Like I said I joined out of convenience but I stayed for the people who work there. This is across the board. Luis greeted me by name every morning, and I go right when they open. His energy in the morning is contagious. All the trainers ( Teddy/AB//Josue/Sam) are great. They are personable even if you aren't training with them (a rarity in gyms). Jane and Eric are great also. Jane always comes over and chats and has great energy. The cleaning crew is always smiling saying hi also. I have since changed jobs and work on the west side in midtown and still take the trek all the way down from Harlem everyday. It is so worth the trip to workout in a gym where everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. I'm there two hours when I go and it flys by. Can't say anything bad about this place. read more

I hate to provide a bad review of a small business trying to survive a pandemic. Unfortunately, I had a truly terrible experience with TMPL - specifically, trying to cancel my membership. I won't go into the whole saga, but suffice it to say that unless you are 100% sure you want to belong to this gym for the rest of your life, don't give them your credit card or you will end up having to cancel your credit card just to get them to stop billing you (this is after numerous emails, phone calls, in-person visits, being repeatedly promised I would not be billed anymore and would be refunded, none of which came true, etc.) I gave them two stars because all the front desk staff were very friendly and the gym space itself was nice, and it would be a good deal if actually they did what they promised to do. read more

Horrible Gym, first and foremost the whole gym set up doesn't make any sense. To be sincere it was actually better while it was NYSC. Let's start with the staff, the whole staff in there act very sketchy and weird, including that weird manager old lady, doesn't know how to socialize with potential customers or members. All with the exception of a front desk guy, with the cartoon shirts are awkward and to say the least fake. The trainers swear they know, they don't know anything, the trainers literally just stand with their clients and talk and talk and talk, they literally make them do basic stuff things with a kettle bell and that's about it. The dark skin Cleaning guy is a weirdo, always staring at me with a demon face. Equipment is trash now, replaced real iron and steel with plastic, just WOW! They keep adding useless machines instead of bringing in the real bodybuilding stuff. The temperature is always off, it's December and their ac is on like it it were july. The locker room showers are dirty. Stalls are still from NYSC with stains. Lockers are breaking down. With the price per month just go to equinox. The manager also begs you to remover a review if she doesn't feel like it reflects what she believes, well guess what I have the power of my own review. Focus on your gym and fix it up. I don't care what the business owner claims, she's not even there to begin with. And I guarantee you that having the AC on during winter months is not even OSHA approved. Stop trying to justify your negligence, before I report it. read more

I've worked out at every gym franchise in NYC and this is by far my favorite--the trainers and informed, engaged, and focused, the front of house staff super friendly and helpful, and the maintenance staff are top shelf. I'm in there 6x a week and it's spotless. However, for some inexplicable reason, they recently mounted a sign that says "I licked it so it's mine." What is this neon innuendo doing in a gym? To be clear, I am sex positive, sex forward feminist, but this is so out of place and it's non sensical. If anyone at TMPL actually reads these reviews, phrase let the CEO know because there's no way he/she would have approved something so moronic and off brand. read more

Earlier in 2021, I was looking for a neighborhood gym that was affordable and clean, with upscale equipment. I found all that, and more! TMPL Ave A is a gem. I usually go in the evenings and weekend mornings, and there is never a line to get in, or a line to use the machines. I usually stick to the treadmill and weights. The treadmills are high tech and in great condition. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a great neighborhood spot. The staff is also incredibly kind! read more

I come here nearly every day. Very happy with nearly everything but there is one or two main things to fix: nearly half the elípticas machines done work, and some of the treadmills are hilariously loud (the one in the line near the window on the left for example). An abundance of everything needed to meet your goals !! Wide variety of equipment and large yoga room. I have attended almost every class provided and every time I am shook with how much I am challenged as well as everyone else in the class. In love with the option of these classes because they give me a chance to sweat more than I would doing my own workout or any workout found online . Also looking around and seeing other members trying their best to keep up gives me that extra push I need. Trainers Josue and Madison are awesome ! Attentive, relatable and nonjudgmental. From the morning team, Luis from reception moves at a fast pace, knows everyone by name, always gets members pumped about their workout and before leaving the gym he makes sure to encourage you not to miss a workout the next day. Lastly, even the janitorial staff become friends. For example, Tony never hesitates to start small conversations or ask about family while effectively executing his job duties. I've been a member at this gym since it was bought by TMPL during the pandemic and only have great things to say about it. All of the equipment is brand new, but it doesn't stop there. Every week I see something new whether it be improving aesthetics, streamlining the layout, or upgrading the amenities even more. The staff is also super friendly and welcoming. I've been training weekly with Sam and if you are looking for someone who will whip your butt into shape he's your man. He pushes me to my limits in the best way!!! I'm so glad TMPL offers a free trial workout, because after coming in and getting to see what a clean, well-equipped, and spacious gym it is, I knew I had to join. The staff and management is incredibly friendly and they obviously work hard to make it a really great place (shoutout Lamar, the GM, for taking the time to give us a tour around the whole gym). Especially compared to the other gyms in the neighborhood (and Manhattan in general), there's so much more space and way less people. All of the machines seem new and really high quality, plus they definitely have something for everyone (tons of options for lifting, cardio, and/or group fitness).
