    Gorgeous locker room
    Rebecca W.

Where to begin? The place is like a mecca when you walk in, with its padded floors, and astroturf that makes it almost feels like you are outside throughout, its like a spa, but also a cross fit gym.....such a dichotomy. The front desk staff were nice enough, i mean no where near as friendly as most other boutique studios, but this place def has a different feel, from the instructors to the vibe- it's got attitude. Not always my style, but I wouldn't complain about that as everything else made up for it, and once you got past the facade.....it's a gym people. I took 45 minute sculpt with Nina and it was tough. I don't know if it was b/c I had just had a long 2 week vacation, or because it was non stop sculpting, or because it really was different than most other classes, but even though I was screaming bloody murder in my head throughout, I have a smile on my face now (even though I am finding it hard to lift my fork to my mouth to eat lunch). The class consisted of a a lot of plank variations, gliders, which I had never done and do not particularly like (it is what it is), and a ton of arm work with 3 pound weights. It doesn't sound heavy at all but when you do arm work with these glider exercises for 25 minutes (guessing), both sides, it was a lot! The room was clean and had nice wood floors (no carpet Thank God- sick of that grossness), and new mats (literally out of the plastic). The music was awesome, Nina had fantastic energy, a totally unique routine, was not annoyingly cheery or peppy. All the instructors here seem to have a NY edge to them....but she was really nice, so I will def be back for her class. Only thing that stood out as odd was while I was waiting for class, this guy made like 15 trips to the storage room ( in the sculpt room) to drop off/store boxes/packages. Maybe he should have waited until after class or had done it earlier? If that is my only complaint, then they have a really special spot. From the locker room (huge, beautiful, luxurious) to the space (padded floors, modern, spacious) they really went all out. The cross fit aspect does intimidate me though- the men instructors are all jacked- I hope I work up the nerve to try a class.

If you're wondering how they treat customers who have spent close to $7K in membership fees, here you go!

I used to be a loyal member here for TWO years and used to rave about Solace New York. I have brought countless drop ins and have convinced many of my friends to join since I loved the community (it used to have). When the founders of the gym initially started this box, there was a huge emphasis on community and there was actual customer service. Since their new management took over, there's been a huge lack thereof customer service, amenities, and professionalism. One weekend I left town and their app wasn't working so I had no way of cancelling or opting out of classes and was hit with a late fee. I e-mailed to see if I could get refunded for this and they made it a bigger deal than it had to be. You would think that they would be slightly accommodating to a loyal customer of 2 years who's spent over $6,888 in membership fees but nope! For me this was the breaking point of why I wanted to put my membership on hold until I found a new studio that piqued my interest. (I've also had multiple items stolen in their facilities. When notifying their staff of this, I was told that they couldn't do anything unless I kept it in a paid locked locker. Note: I did and PAID over $30/month for it and go figure, NOTHING happened). Before I paused my membership, I dropped into a new box, Neo Fifth, that's not too far from there and was immediately given the e-mail below (see attached. Not only that, but I was given snarky remarks by one of the trainers there about what's better and what's not. To be completely honest, I understood the trainer's frustration because gyms in NY are very competitive; however, I am a consumer coming whose profession is a consumer focused industry and his behavior was completely unprofessional. Do you think Equinox trash talks Crunch or Planet Fitness on status quo? No... If you're the best, your work will speak for itself. While I was a member here, I did enjoy the culture and programming at Solace but what was disappointing is their customer service. To know that a "customer service representative" of theirs could care less about a member who's been there for 2 years out of the 3 years it's been opened says a lot about their management and professionalism. Even when I tried contacting their GM, Bryan, about the level of unprofessionalism I experienced, he forwarded my email to his wife and their "customer service" member, Hannah, who evidently doesn't care about retention rates. The retention of their coaches is a bit off-putting too since half of the original and experienced coaches that started there are no longer there (disheartening really). Pros: - The people that go there are sweet, they're kind, and are motivating. The people I've met the last two years are some of my very good friends. - Crossfit programming - Olympic Weightlifting Cycle It's their management that's not up to par. If you actually care about where your money goes and how you're treated as a client, I'd go elsewhere.

Pic after dropping into class today.

I am an owner of a CrossFit gym myself in Reno Nevada, called Double Edge CrossFit, so dropping in at other gyms I get a little nervous. This place blew me away. The facility is top notch and has great equipment! The staff was very helpful and friendly right when you walk in. I was greeted by the owner Jim and you could tell right away he genuinely cared and took his time to give us a tour of the facility. We take great pride in our showers and bathrooms at Double Edge. It was so nice to see another CrossFit facility take the same pride in theirs. Their showers are awesome! They also have towels which is a huge plus. Jim was our coach for the 1pm class we attended and did a great job. The class was well organized and structured great for the beginner and the advanced to be able to workout together. My wife is pregnant and she was able to get a great workout and felt comfortable, while I was able to go a little heavier and harder and still fit right in with the group. Again, I am pretty critical of other CrossFit gyms, because I am in the business. Anyone who is thinking about CrossFit in the NYC area should give Solace a try. Can't wait to come come back!

I have a few injuries that impact some flexibility but generally don't limit me (for example, I play competitive tennis and used to box semi-competitively). I also stated I was just looking for general conditioning but hoped that through the strength training I could improve my structure (for example, my shoulders pull forward a little because I need to develop my back a bit). A week passes and I don't hear a thing. I send a follow-up and very quickly hear back with an e-mail response stating that they aren't a physical therapist and won't take me on as a client. I'm somewhat surprised but sent a response clarifying I wasn't looking for a physical therapist just a trainer and seeing who they could recommend. Again, I didn't hear back...I've moved on. I ended up finding an amazing trainer who I've been working with the last few months and the progress has been great.

It's probably due to the fact that it's my first time in my life that I'm actually training at a place that employs professionals (which means every week I get my ass kicked). I've done my fair share of training through various corporate clubs and the quality of trainers can not even come close to those that work at Rich Barretta. I've had the opportunity to work with two of the trainers here and both are extremely friendly, creative with their workouts and knowledgeable. Each week I'm presented with an entirely new workout. I've never repeated any exercise in the 3 months I've been training and the new muscles I've discovered thank me (or hate me) for that. The facilities are clean and intimate. Since it's a private studio, there are no distractions (other trainers talking to your trainer, waiting for equipment, not having enough space, gym members staring at you, etc.). I feel really comfortable working out here and I'm not embarrassed to try some of the exercises my trainer wants me to do since there's no one around watching me. The prices are reasonable as well. If you're looking to train somewhere, I would 150% recommend going here rather than with a trainer in your gym.

At one point, a masseuse even asked if I was born without trap muscles because she couldn't feel them and then expressed doubt that I could lift a bottle of water over my head. In the first month I saw visible changes in tone and body shape. It's been 3 months now and I feel better: more energetic and overall happier (either it's those endorphins or I'm just glad to not drop dead at any moment from a lifetime of inactivity). I also feel pretty great in a swimsuit. Throughout this, Damien has been a great guide. What I appreciate most is his experience and presence allows for the most efficient use of my time by removing decision making on my part. If I were doing this alone or in a group class, I'd waste time trying to figure out if my form was correct, if I was using something too light/too heavy, etc. Without his help I'd have spent a few fruitless months trying to work out and then give up after not seeing any results. Beginning exercising here was the best decision I made last year, and I'm slightly mad I didn't find Encore sooner and start this earlier in life.

About 6 weeks into the program, I noticed a measurable increase in muscle endurance. After about 10 weeks, I literally couldn't believe how much better I felt.
