This is my first time doing cross fit. The studio itself is freaking beautiful and awesome! It's decorated with earth tone colors and fake grass and woods. They have soooo many equipments and offer varieties of things u can do. They also sell coconut water which I love. The coach I got was Michael and he was really nice. It wasn't something of a competitive environment which I like. Don't get me wrong but u can def push yourself here. I just hate it when the instructor goes "do 50 squats with a 12lbs ball and go to the wall when u r done". Then everyone is done n goes to the wall n u r the one left on the floor n they r just staring at u n put u on the spot. This place isn't like that at all. I can take my time here to correct myself n feel the muscles work and be in the zen mode while still having fun. My group of students were also friendly. No bitchy looks no judgement. All the coaches r so freaking hot too and those bodies omg they have the same body as THOR n u can just stare at it all day. They have lockers w locks and towels n shower rooms which r really nice. Studio is clean and space is huge. I would def come back! read more

I was a member at Solace for about a year and few months. I left Solace about 6 months ago. I was encouraged to provide feedback as to why I left. I sent my feedback to one of the Solace owners. Disappointingly, never received a reply to my email. One of the staff members told me...they received my email and management did not take it seriously and were unprofessional about it. I felt my feedback was positive despite my experience. I included my feedback below. I would also like to add that 1 of the male coaches, kicked my butt on several different occasions with his foot. I asked him to stop, I told him it was inappropriate and he didn't seem to comprehend. He also put his hands on me inappropriately on a different occasion during class. He also tried to rub his privates on my knee while i was sitting on another occasion. People may say it was a joke but sexual harassment or assault is not something to joke about. Grown men should be mature enough to know right from wrong. I don't feel I need to justify why I never reported it. However, I will share that I gave him the benefit of the doubt as a person, a human being. At the end of the day, he's the one who has to live with himself and despite all of this I still wish him well. My feedback to management: -I felt the Solace culture and community promoted body shaming. Example, #noflatbutts was allowed to be written on the walls of the gym. I saw this on the walls on many occasions and also heard this chanted by members and coaches. I felt confused because the gym is suppose to promote positivity, community, camaraderie and also should be a mature, friendly, warm and welcoming environment. These are all the foundations that crossfit was founded on and it is what makes crossfit so rewarding. To observe Solace members and coaches display and participate in body shaming was extremely disheartening. -Friendly, nice, pleasant, welcoming and compassionate are intrinsic qualities of a positive culture and community. However, at Solace I heard coaches criticize members behind their backs. Some coaches were moody and unfortunately let it get the best of them by taking it out on members. Anger and aggression appear to be a unfortunate, reoccurring theme at Solace. Ie: Nina's angry message on Facebook group. I also recall hearing a coach / coach in training call members 'idiots'. These are unmistakable examples of unprofessionalism and disrespect. Respect and professionalism are the foundations of a positive environment . - The gym should be a positive and professional space. However, relationship dynamics between coaches and members or coaches and coaches, etc, etc, were at times awkward and strained due boundaries being crossed. Again, respect and professionalism are the foundations of a positive environment. -At times coaches seem to be more distracted than focused on coaching classes. Some coaches were constantly looking at their phones, i.e.: texting, social media, etc. Or distracted chatting with members or other coaches, which resulted in coaches being late to class. I hope Solace works on improving and promoting structure, respect and mindfulness. I go to the gym to de-stress and to re-energize in a positive environment. However, I found this goal to be challenging in Solace, as my battery became exhausted and drained from these experiences. All of the above are conditions and behaviors that your team has allowed and promoted and each one of you are accountable for it. I took the time to recall some unpleasant experiences and I was honest about them. These are complaints that other members have expressed to me but not sure if they could be as honest in the flesh, as I was to you. I believe in the values of putting in the work to be better than yesterday and better everyday in any situation. I hope your team receives my feedback as a opportunity to gain. Reebok said it best, be more human. Sometimes being human hurts our pride and heart. But I also know very well, that being more human can drive us to be better and stronger than yesterday. Which ever you and your team chooses, I hope the end result is positive. Good luck and all my best. read more

Visiting from Boston, fellow CrossFit Box owner. I am thrilled to see such an amazing CrossFit Box. They have really done it right and thought about all the needs of each CrossFitter. The coaching is simply outstanding, very dynamic coaching staff. and they all have a high degree of knowledge. It was exciting to see a great mixture of classes offered ranging from yoga, CF group classes, Free Style/ Gymnastics, Mobility, Barbell Club. Each class is a great addition to complement any athletes's training. The Box is beautiful, equipped with showers and lockers, towels, all amenities needed to get your WOD in while on the go, and they carry Progenex! I highly recommend this BOX, wish I lived closer! It will be my BOX when I'm in NYC for sure! Thanks for making me feel at home!! read more

My second home. This place has everything, awesome and new equipment, clean bathrooms, and amazing personalities. I was originally going to join a box on 28th, then did a last min Google maps search and Found this was closer to my job. Showed up and man was I blown away, signed up the next day. If in doubt, take a free trial class and get a feel for the "Best Box in NYC" TM. read more

First impressions of Solace: The space is interesting. Once I walked in, there was a Solace Body class going on in the open space on the ground floor. The Body class looked pretty intense! It was an intense circuit style class and the instructor definitely encouraged the students to push harder. I would've been intimidated to take this class because people there were very fit-looking and they were working out really intensely. The atmosphere of this gym seems very hardcore as it is a CrossFit gym. I was here for the Sculpt class though, which takes place in the closed studio space towards the back. I learned that the actual CrossFit class itself takes place in the basement, which is a bigger space with more equipment. Check in with the girl at the counter was fine. The Sculpt class was good. It was a combination of yoga, pilates, and barre. Nina was a good instructor and I really liked the arm series she did. Her class was low intensity compared to the Body class outside, and utilizes mat, sliders, small weights, and the bar. It was a good workout and I definitely left sweaty. My two stars are for the women's locker room. I read from other reviews that this is a new gym and that the locker room is clean and nice. Well, it wasn't clean. The decor is nice but has become grimey with use. I think the locker facility needs a good scrubbing. I felt like the floor hasn't been swept in awhile because there was hair stuck on my flipflops as I walked around. It was gross. The locker room can get crowded at peak times. A lot of the lockers did not lock properly, so I had to ask the girl at the counter to come in to fix them. read more

Joining Crossfit Solace was one of the best impulse moves I've ever made. I was starting to lose my excitement for Crossfit and this box brought it back with full force! The coaches really take the time to get to know you and provide constructive feedback to help you improve. More importantly, I was looking for a box with a strong community and they delivered tenfold. Oh, and have you seen the facility? It's gorgeous! read more

Crossfit Solace has basically become a second home for me. They have an amazing facility, a good variety of classes (Crossfit, Yoga, Olympic Lifting and Freestyle), awesome coaches and a solid community. You can find every weightlifting toy you could want here and you're allowed to drop weights on the lower level. It's probably also the only place in the city where you can hang out after a workout and do indoor dog sled races. The owners are very friendly, actively involved in running classes and making sure all the members are happy. Overall, this is by far my favorite Crossfit box in the city. read more

This place is amazing. I am new to crossfit having joined October 28th, 2014 and I love it. Much has to do with the coaches, the environment they create, and the facility itself. I will note that I have been a member of three gyms in the city and it takes me a while to adapt to each place (like 2 months), however, here I felt comfortable in just a two weeks. The coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and really listen to differences as required by each person. It is not a one-size fits all approach. I have received valuable pointers and instruction when it comes to form, technique, eating, and more. Further, the encouragement from both coaches and other people in the class makes it even more enjoyable. I cannot say enough good things about the coaching and people here. The facility is wonderful. Everything is brand new. I have only gone to two other places in the city, one time each, and in my humble opinion this by far the nicest space. The dressing rooms are amazing - i go during my lunch break so I shower there and they have everything you need. Overall, the environment that they have created is very much like a community. It is nothing that I have experienced at other places I have been and that is what makes this place stand out from the rest. As a side note, they are affiliated with some great companies - for example, they have Kettlebell Kitchen delivered here which I have been ordering from for the past 2 months. Makes picking up much easier. read more

This is bigger and cleaner than most Crossfit boxes I've seen (which isn't many since I'm new to the sport). The schedule is packed with many classes and the equipment looks new and well maintained. I came for a 15 minute free session. It actually takes about 60 minutes total to hear about crossfit in general and what Solace specifically provides. The 15 minute workout was pretty basic but intense. I was thirsting for more. So I signed up for a 10-pack but would've considered the membership if I wasn't planning to leave the area for christmas. Some of the people there are strong, possibly an indicator of this box's effectiveness. I guess we'll see! read more

Definitely one of my favorite workout spots in the city. I first discovered it through ClassPass and went to their yoga class. Their yoga classes are fast-paced and challenging (if you want it to be, through variations). Mats are provided for you, which is always a plus when you don't want to lug one around or pay $2 every time. The only problem is there's almost always a Solace Body class going on (more on this in a bit) just outside the yoga room, so you can hear their loud, thumping music and yelling. The yoga room does fill up, so I recommend showing up earlier than just 5-10 minutes. That said, there's never too little space to the point you feel crammed. Their Solace Body classes are a big workout and a half. Make sure you're well-stretched, hydrated and mentally prepared because you will be red and panting at the end. It's always a group or partner work, so you can feel motivated and can't slack off. Their facilities are very clean. I never had to wait for the showers after class, and they have lockers with locks and towels for you. read more

I joined Solace two years ago with no crossfit or HIIT experience and frankly in pretty terrible shape. Within no time, I was hooked. The facility, the coaches and the membership are all top notch. This place quite literally changed my life. The coaches are educated and engaged and always willing to put in extra time with members. I travel a lot for work and all of my favorite coaches never hesitated to give me programming to complete on the road so I didn't lose momentum. Two years later, I'm in the best shape of my life from both a strength and aesthetic perspective. Not to mention, I've made friends I'll have for life. Two months ago I moved to LA (land of health and fitness) for work and have been combing the city for something remotely comparable. Trust me when I say I have been EVERYWHERE. From the facility, to the coaching, to the programming, to the membership, to the schedule...there is NOTHING close. I had no idea how LUCKY I was until I had to try to find another home. Even from 3000 miles away, I bleed Solace. Anyone that had a different experience has a personal issue....this place is 10/10... read more

I really tried to like this box but every time I go in for a drop-in the front desk seems to be confused as to how to accommodate me. Coaching and programming were good but the community was not the friendliest especially when I had dropped in for an Open workout this year. Will try another gym. read more

Review for YOGA ONLY. Lovely clean facilities, spacious locker room (with funny shaped lockers). Lots of luxe amenities but as more ppl are finding out about this gym there's definitely a line for the 3(?) showers after the 7am classes get out. I've mostly attended the Thursday/Friday 7am yoga classes. The Friday instructor is good but I find her corrections a bit brusque and stern schoolteachery more than yoga hands-y. Had a different Thursday instructor this past week but she was very focused on core work and planks more than just straight vinyasas. It was definitely a good core workout on top of being an intermediate level yoga class. Receptionist is always friendly/accommodating, but beware some of the individual teachers have late policies - I ran into subway issues and was 10 minutes late and the instructor doesn't let anyone in after 7 minutes. I get it and was not penalized by the receptionist but they should include that sort of info in the class/instructor descriptions. Not sure what this means to anyone else, but one of the few studios where there's always at least one dude in the class (not always the same one). read more

Great programming, great coaching and staff, and great facilities. The hours and variety of classes offered here are incomparable to any facility I've been to in NYC. The community and members are welcoming and supportive whether you are a fitness vet or a newbie. Highly recommend Solace!!! read more

I have been to the Body and Crossfit classes- and was a member for a month. I liked the club, classes, and coaches, they (coaches) paid attention to form and were hands-on for a newbie. Solace is not cheap to start and the place gets pretty hectic and loud. There are multiple classes happening at a time so lots of bar dropping and yelling, music made it hard to pay attention or was distracting to me especially as I was trying to learn. You also have a bunch of people in there doing open gym who are also taking up space and dropping bars, I constantly felt like space was tight and people were on top of each other. Same thing in the locker room (very nice btw- equinox quality). Ive been to a number of boxes around the world and this is certainly the poshest (most dont try to be fancy). Being in NY the prices show but it was a great experience. read more

If you're used to traditional barre classes (Physique, Bar Method, Pop, FlyBarre, etc.) this is a bit different. I attended the "Sculpt" class here - a good combination of yoga, traditional barre, and strength. My main gripes here were about the flow of the class - some of the barre sequences were short will the yoga/strength training took up the bulk of the class. Also my mat was full of hair and towels are "not allowed to leave the locker rooms." If you're not going to clean mats thoroughly, at least allow towels! I would attend a class here again, but only if I am in a bind and cannot get a spot in one of my preferred studios. read more

What a beautiful location. The place was immaculate and had a ton of phenomenal equipment. Better than that , I was so impressed/humbled by the positive reception and welcoming environment today. What an incredible community you guys have there. I've worked out at many boutique fitness spots. Solace is at the top of the list. Megan's class looked challenging and fun. I took an 11 am with Kenny and he was entertaining as hell. The workout crushed me. I will be going back very soon. 5 stars. read more

Moved to NYC about 6 months ago and have loved being apart of this box. Great place to train, along with attending regular WODs I've taken two strong cycles which I can't recommend highly enough - Wolf and Hayden are awesome at helping you develop proper technique and lift heavier. Enjoy the range of options available from Oly classes, yoga and Body. read more

I joined Solace for Crossfit at the beginning of this year. What impressed me the most, aside from the awesome facilities was the high level of coaching. Every coach I have had, no matter which class Crossfit, BODY, Gymnastics has been great. I have learned a lot since I joined and they have pushed me to do things I did not think I could do. I will be moving out of NYC and will definitely miss Solace. I think one of the saddest things about moving away from NYC is not being able to come into Solace after work. I know that were I am moving to has a lot of boxes, but there aren't many like Solace. Great place, top notch coaching and awesome community! read more

I've been training at this gym for nearly 1.5 years and totally loved it in the beginning. As with everything things have changed. I had two knee surgeries (not from training at Solace) and the second one was a bad one and I had to be extremely careful in recovery and adhere to a strict timeline. While some of the instructors, Heather, Brandon, Chelsea, the Yoga Ladies.. were amazing and very helpful in supporting me during my recovery and making sure I get my workout in and even considering of not over working certain muscle groups, others were not, and I got the look like are you kidding me, had to repeat myself I am not allowed to do this and they said oh I think you can (sure I can but I am not going to destroy my knee to please you - you are not my doctor!) and being pushed to do something against the strict order of my doctor is a huge liability and not acceptable in a professional environment, namely Kenny and Greg, both who are very moody people. I decided to no longer attend any of their classes and this got taken personally...hmm it's my right to go to a certain coach or not without explaining myself. It's also the managements responsibility to step in, in case there is a personal issue. At the end I pay money for a service. Sometimes I felt like being back in Highschool from the behavior of certain people. I am still giving this gym my 3 stars as looking back I had some amazing coaches there which I totally loved going to and who were nothing but amazing to me during recovery and non recovery time. Overall it seems to me more a laid back gym, and if you are the only one who keeps asking for a tougher workout or adding on more load, you might be the only one. @ the person writing an answer - if coaches disrespect a serious injury and mock you that had nothing to do with preferences thats a liability if a coach disrespects you thats not ok! I pay for a service i am the customer the gym i am now is amazing to ms there is a reason wjy i am no longer at solace read more

I took a number of Body classes at Solace. Some instructors were nice, encouraging, and ran a fun class. Others were quite rude, were not patient about explaining proper technique or form, and tended towards yelling/calling people weak/being extremely rude to those of us not in cross-fit shape. One trainer, Kenny, was also rather inflexible in helping me modify some moves to accommodate a bum shoulder. They do a physically challenging work out - you'll feel it! But, if you're just coming back from an injury (as I was) or prefer a more positive approach to working out, this might not be the place for you. If you don't mind some negative reinforcement styles, and have some experience in HIIT type workouts, then this might be a great spot. Also for the price, the locker room amenities could be a bit better (facewash, etc). read more

So let me tell you a little bit about me. I've been a member at Equinox for years and I've always been pretty happy with it. I really enjoyed their metabolic conditioning classes and their amazing bathrooms. I have a best friend, we ALL have a best friend, who is constantly telling you what you SHOULD do. She would always say " You should do Crossfit, you're going to love it, I just know it!" And I'm like how the hell would you know, you don't even DO crossfit?! Crossfit has a stereotype to the common people of two things 1). If your car breaks down and your passenger happens to do Crossfit no worries, they'll just use their belt as a winch and drag the car behind them to the next gas station 2). The meat headiest of meat heads and dude bros go there. Where their conversations are actually just a collection of hashtags like #doyouevenliftbro and #gainz etc. Neither one of those things are exactly my bag but I would really like to be able to drag a broken down car to the nearest gas station if needed...and maybe even when it isn't. So eventually I gave into my best friends advice and gave it a try. Solace is exactly that. My solace. These people care about everything. The amount of care, and preparation for their workouts EVERY WEEK is insane. They want you to learn proper form before throwing you into a real class. And believe me, if you haven't done Crossfit you will want this, I'm a month into it and it's still information overload. The difference is I know I'm taken care. I know I will be watched and helped and if I'm not doing something properly they will coach me through it until I am. I'll never forget my first real Crossfit class and it was challenging, VERY challenging and what's worse is we had to run. A complete stranger from my class saw that I had stopped running and was on the verge of giving up. He slowed down and ran with me. He kept saying "come on, you got this." And I pushed through. Because he was there, because for some crazy reason he cared more about my own success than his time. The owners will follow up with you and say "Hey where you been?" Or " Hey I heard you were sick." They've even come in on their off time to train me on one of the foundation classes so I could get them done before I went on vacation. Any account issues I've had they have taken care of it within an hour. Literally. There is a difference between a place that is operated as a business and a place that operates as a home. This place operates as home. In this crazy city I think we're all looking for a little piece of something that feels like that. Fortunately for me I found it. And unfortunately for Equinox Solace's bathrooms are just as nice. Whatever you're intimidated by doesn't exist here. If you need help, ask. If you're curious, try it. But I warn you, you'll never be able to go back to your old workouts. So enough praise of this place lets have some real talk like... do you even lift bro? read more

The Body (HIIT) class here is a totally different beast and in a great way. It is tough and empowering and your limits are going to be pushed. With that you are much stronger and better because of it. Very beautiful facility that is very easy to get to as it is only a few steps away from the train. Things are a bit chaotic at times as there are always some sort of class going on but I find that adds to the energy. read more

Solace is a beautiful Crossfit gym that I would highly recommend for a sweaty workout that will leave you sore but feeling accomplished. It's especially great for morning classes before work because the locker room/bathroom is spacious and clean. I've taken the yoga class (ok, but I would stick with places like Laughing Lotus or another full-fledged yoga studio) and Sculpt class which was challenging enough without feeling impossible to get through. Why the 3 stars, though? Cue the Sculpt Body class. I consider myself an intermediate level gym go-er, so I knew this class wouldn't be easy (despite the fact that on their website, it states that it's "appropriate for all fitness levels") which I was fine with. However, I did not expect the complete lack of concern for safety from the instructor. The pace of the class went by very quickly, as speed and "going hard" were the main objectives. Sculpt Body is obviously not for beginners, but I've never been to any workout where the instructor didn't at least spend a minute or two reminding all participants of correct form in order to avoid injury. While I do know how to avoid injuring myself, the nature of the class (the instructor only cares for speed, and you are teamed up so you feel the extra weight of not letting your team down by being the weakest link) made me push myself too hard, too fast and I ended up skinning and bruising my knee (during the box jump burpee drills) and pulling a back muscle (not sure when that happened, as I didn't realize the pain until I got home). Judging by a few of the reviews here, I see that I'm not the only one who had a less than safe experience with the Body class. I do like the set up of the class itself, so if I do make a return, I'll only do so when I'm at a more advanced level in my workouts. Like I mentioned above, the Solace website states that the BODY by Solace class is appropriate for all levels, but this is definitely not a class for beginners. read more

I've spent the last 5 days dropping in for open gym with my partner at Solace. Unfortunately we have both left with a very disappointing opinion of the place. Solace was the closest place to our hotel and given the clean 5 star Google rating we thought it would be great. Couldn't be more wrong. The facility itself is wonderfully clean and very well equipped. But that's where it stops. Although the classes appeared to be structured with strength and conditioning. Note that a emphasis is placed on the conditioning element with the strength element lost. We attempted 1 class but didn't enjoy the vibe, therefore opting for open gym. Over several days its safe to say that staff are incredibly rude (except for one receptionist on the first day) carry a great sense of self importance and attitude which seems to rub off on members. This place definitely does not carry a sense of community which crossfit prides itself on. If anything we felt like we were on someone's 'turf' (even in out of class hours). For those visiting, be prepared for judging eyes with limited interaction. Although Solace is a lovely place on the eye. That was it for us. We have visited many wonderful boxes in the US but these guys weren't very welcoming. Really unfortunate. read more

Just for clarification sake, I'm only reviewing the Solace Body class that I took on a weeknight. I have ClassPass and the description for the class sounded really worthwhile. So, Wednesday night rolls around, I walk in and I'm ready to get my sweat on. The gym itself, as others have said, is gorgeous -- clean with fancy soaps. The stuff an NYC Millennial's ClassPass dreams are made of. Except, when I actually take the class, probably the best sound/word to describe my experience was, "Huh??" Right off the bat, the instructor seemed a little...unready. She was super fit and seemed like she has potential to be a great instructor but she just seemed a little discombobulated the entire time. We started a little late and her warmup, which was mostly just stretching, lasted almost 15 minutes. For a 45 minute class, that's a long time to just stretch. The class was supposed to start at 6:30pm. we didn't start until 6:36pm and didn't actually do any real working out until about 6:50pm. Even then, her instructions were really unclear and we would all look at each other to see what we were supposed to do. We did these station rotations in partners, but she never told us how many rounds we were doing so I didn't know if I should save some energy for the next round. We ended up only doing one round of the strength exercises and then another round of cardio circuits that we went through twice. Best part was, she lost her little clock timer button about 4 times and would walk around looking for it asking us if we saw where she put it down. We couldn't start until she found her timer button. Even through end-of-the-workout stretching I was confused. I kept doing the wrong stretch or stretching on the wrong side because I couldn't see her and her directions weren't clear. I didn't really break a sweat until last 10 minutes. We ended the class about 10 minutes late because of the late start the all the misplaced timer mishaps. It wasn't just me who felt this way, when I walked in the locker room, all the ladies who took class with me had the same "huh?!?" expression. We all agreed it was one of the most confusing workout experiences ever. One girl even asked, "Was she drunk??" Honestly, maybe this instructor just had an off night. Not super sure. I do think, however, that if I were into Cross Fit, I would love this place since the facilities are double gold star status. read more

I agree wholeheartedly with some of the reviews. Customer service is lacking. For all the non-millennials, be aware that everything is done via email or text; no personal care. The head trainer I dealt with prides himself on his Phd status. If you want to walk in, sign up and want no customer service, Solace is your place. The impression on the website is that this is a "community" based gym. Not. read more

I have been taking the Body class with Kenny for 5 months (since it started) and can't say enough great things about this class and Kenny as a trainer. This class pushes you to your limit in new ways and every class presents something new. I am a Classpass member, primarily taking other HIIT, strength/conditioning and boxing classes (Exceed, Fhitting Room, Barry's, Flywheel, Flex, Church Street, Gotham, Overthrow, BFX, etc.) and find this class to be the most effective and fulfilling class I go to. I work out every morning (5-7 days a week) and I try to go to Body 2-4 times a week. I take the morning classes and every time I leave feeling stronger, better, healthier and more positive about my overall progress. I have been getting over a foot injury for a year or so and have always been athletic so getting back into the gym has been my "solace" (pun intended). Taking Kenny's classes has changed my overall mobility, strength, and has changed my body in ways that any athlete would be proud of. The community aspect of Solace is something I really love too. The staff and the classes force you to push yourself and your teammates making every exercise that much better. Kenny is an excellent trainer, one of the best, and through his take-no-shit attitude also makes sure to help each and every athlete push themselves to their potential. This gym has helped me get better at my form, work harder and get faster, all the elements I am looking for in a class I go to only a few days a week. I have seen incredible results in myself and I make sure to pass the word onto everyone I know about how much I love the Body classes and this gym. I am constantly recommending people to come to class with me or passing the word onto other Classpassers who ask about the gym when they see my Solace tank on. If I quit Classpass, it would be to join this gym to take Body everyday. Enough said. read more

Being brand new to Crossfit, I couldn't have asked for a better box. The coaches, equipment and overall culture of Solace is something very unique and special, and I'm definitely hooked. To anyone that's on the fence because they're new to Crossfit, I would strongly suggest to go for it and join Solace. I'm sure glad that I did! read more

I was a member at Solace for 6 months (until I moved out of the neighborhood). Having previously been a member at Reebok Crossfit 5th Ave and a drop-in at other boxes around the country, I can unequivocally say Solace tops them all. They get pretty much everything right: -incomparable facility -- exceedingly clean and modern locker rooms, and great space/equipment setup; impossible to find elsewhere in NYC -great instructors -- I found all the instructors to be friendly and helpful -intelligent programming -- loved the mix of Crossfit, Freestlye (gymnastics-based workout), and Mobility class options If you're looking to improve your physical fitness and/or body composition, can't imagine a better place to do it than at Solace. read more

Being here for almost a year and I am still in love with this place and its people. I visited a few other boxes, but didn't find the programming or facility that would go with my preference. After my initial visit I fell in love with its space planning and facility: air conditioned space, hair gel & body wash (that smells NICE) in the showers, clean towels, brand new equipment, tons & tons of mobility accessories. Coaching is top notch as well. Your fitness will be tested and if you have any questions, they will definitely help you. Solace is the real deal. You can tell countless hours have been spent on every detail of this place. From the diversified programming (CrossFit, freestyle, oly, mobility, yoga) to the well-appointed locker rooms to offerings from Paleo Pack, Kettlebell Kitchen, FitAid and Progenex - the brains behind Solace have put together an amazing combination of fitness resources in a beautiful, well-executed space. The coaching staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The owners are a constant presence around the gym, making every effort to know each person's name and addressing any concerns asap. Instructor: Alex Silver-Fagan I have so much to say about my experience. When I first walked in I was kindly greeted by the front desk rep who walked me back to the women's locker room. In my mind, I thought this was great service. Than the class started. The instructor is incredibly rude. She called my friend out in front of the class for rolling her eyes when she did not. This was in the first 2 minutes of class. This was embarrassing to say the least. Even if she did roll her eyes (which she didn't), why try to humiliate her? Once we finished the warm up we moved into different sections of the floor doing different exercises at each section for 10 minutes with a partner. Her 40-30-20-10-20-30-40 system was a bit confusing the first time around. I asked an additional question and she seemed annoyed by me. Her responses we're condescending and totally NOT encouraging. During the first segment of the 1st sequence of exercises she was rude yet again. I could not hang from the bar to do the ab workout. My hands were burning and I just could not get through another set. She ultimately offered me a modification but first told me "it's a bar" "your hands will be fine" "you'll get over it". Actually no, I have blisters today. So I am not over it. Her tone is not appropriate for a "professional". Even at the end during the stretch she made a comment about "what do you guys not understand, table top pose" (this was to the whole class this time). I can't get behind a studio like this. My first experience was terrible and I would never go back or recommend it to anyone. It's a shame because I am looking for another studio to throw in my rotation. I currently frequent Barry's/rumble 2-3x per week (they are excellent and have amazing, fun, high energy, encouraging instructors). I have never been treated this way by an instructor before. With that said, for those who may visit this studio still in the future, I would advise going to a class with a different instructor. read more

I started looking to get back to a box and heard about Solace, and couldn't be happier to call this place a second "home." The coaches know what they're doing and are incredibly helpful with all movements. The owners are always there making sure the facility and equipment stays in top shape (which is the best there is), but truly care about the members. Honestly, wish there were a way to give it more than 5 stars! By far the best Box in the city! read more

My favorite place... I've done CrossFit all over the world, but Solace has by FAR the most amazing facilities I've had the pleasure of using to date. I'm happy to be able to call this box home. Not only is all the kit top notch but the coaches and owners are very helpful. The coaches roaster is world class and the breadth of classes is very impressive as well. read more

I've been a Crossfiter for over 4 years now and I will have to call this my 3rd "home" box. I've probably dropped into over 20 boxes over the years so needless to say I've been to my share of places. This, by far, is the best built and most comfortable to get things done. Yes, the typical box is a just that, a "box". Four walls and a roof. Those places are great, but this takes it to the next level. All about the best here. Not to be missed. read more

Overall: I'm giving this place 4 stars because some of the classes/trainers are great (5 stars), while others are mediocre at best and frustrating at worst (2-3 stars). As others have mentioned, this place is not beginner friendly. I'm an experienced powerlifter, but new(ish) to CrossFit, and 3 out of the 4 trainers I've had so far did a terrible job explaining the moves and what we were doing. I can read a WOD... the reason I come to a class is for the expertise of the trainer. The yoga, body, and sculpt classes I've attended have all been great and the trainers were much more accommodating. Equipment: For such a big (and expensive) gym, they really don't have enough equipment. I've been to a few classes where they ran out of a certain weight of kettlebell and I had to choose to use a weight that was either too heavy (possible injury/can't maintain good form) or too light (not a good enough workout). They do have open gym hours, so you can use the equipment outside of a class if you still have some gas and want to do a few extra things. Facility: The facility is great and clean, excellent bathrooms with everything you need to get ready after your workout. read more

Short version (summary): This box is amazing! Due to my schedule, I only make it to Crossfit classes and I have absolutely no complaints. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable and there for you, the members are amazing and the place has enough equipment for you to challenge yourself in many ways! Whether you're new to crossfit, just looking for a box to check out, or just need a change in your workout routine, I highly recommend hitting up this place :) Long version (detailed): *My experience I'd always been against crossfit, but this year I wanted a challenge and told myself I'd do it "just for a month"...I am now going on to my third month, of many, at this box lol. The perspective I'd always been given was that crossfit was a place where people got injured and everything was for time so f*ck form...well I can tell you THAT'S BEYOND WRONG! I have always lifted heavy and once I started here I had to take the ego pill and lower my weights because the coaches reaaaaaally focus on your form. In the first month I learned new techniques, improved my mobility, and started doing things I never did on my own (everything most meatheads avoid...aka cardio or any "non-bicep" pump exercises lol) or was scared to do (olympic lifting). Aside from the classes, they also have amazing coaches who you can get with for a few one-on-one sessions to improve any challenges you have; whether it's learning how to squat or how to squat double your body weight. *The spot This place is huge and has plenty of space for you to get a great workout in. I've never had a problem with it being packed to a point where I was elbow to elbow with someone and couldn't workout. The locker room (ladies since I don't go in the men's) are super spacious and clean and you don't need to bring your own lock (digital lockers). The staff is super friendly and the members are awesome. There's much more to say about that except that it's a great community to be a part of. As I always say though, don't just take my word for it. Go check it out and get hooked like I did ;) read more
